  • This is my 5th year planting food plots and I have learned a lot through trial and error. In this video I go over what works best for me on my west Texas hunting property. I hope you find it helpful and it helps you improve your hunting area.

Next year will be my first. It’s more than a little intimidating. I really appreciate the info you shared!

@@robertwebb2721 Man my first plot was a joke. I bought some mix seed from Academy and it didn't grow at all. The next year I made a video of that food plot. Take a look in the description for that video.

im just down the road in snyder and want to try a food plot again this fall. My last attempt was a total fail. I was going to try a spring plot this year, but glad I passed because we havent gotten much rain at all. So you recommend a Winter Rye/Oats mix for the fall plots. Spread seed, than mow the grass down just to get the seed bed covered lightly I guess. Did you fertilize in advance, or after germination? Any additional tips or recoomendations appreciated for our area that is pretty harsh! Thanks...also...whats your success for spring and summer plots?

Use Buck Forage Oats. They won't die when you get a frost. They will stay green at 20 degrees. Deer will hit that over the wheat although still a good idea to mix them together. I've had the Buck Forage Oats stay green throughout the entire winter till the deer just completely grazed the plot.

I've thought about using them but gosh damn they are not cheap. I can get a bag of feed oats for about $8 vs $30 to $40. Do you have hogs where you hunt?

I think I know what you're asking so I'll do my best to answer it.
The wheat and oats do grow tall enough were I guess I could harvest it and make food. As for the purple top turnips. Yes they get big enough to eat but I don't like them.

What height do you put your mower on? You seed than mow?

    • @ChrisHall4000gmail

I drop the mower as low as I can get it. And yes I put the seed out then mow.

Any seed recommendations? Thinking about a deer mix from turner seed or imperial no plow.

@@briancooke7841 I would chat with the local feed store owner and see what they say. At the end of the day you can't go wrong with cereal grain like wheat, oats, or rye. If you go rye MAKE SURE it's not rye grass, you do not want rye grass in your food plot. I've had good luck over seeding with cheap feed wheat.
I would not go with a mixed bag of seed.

@@acort10 I'm on a new lease that has cows and I have more problems with the cows vs pigs. This was my first year on this place and I'm going to have to do something to keep the cows out. When I did this video I was on another place and the land owner didn't have any cows.
