I understand if you want to skip over the screen tech specs and just get to the results. Just jump to the 4:26 marker and I spend the next minute and a half talking about which computers are better or worse with regards to visibility. đ
Loved it! Great to see Garmin making improvements over the generations. Imma have to see how the wahoo is in comparison to my edge 530 in person :-) one thing I'm noticing with the visibility on the edge 530 in my testing is that the glass is quite reflective and the glare can be quite rough which impacts the visibility some times. Maybe we'll get an antiglare screen in the next revision... More testing to be done :) thanks for the video, Matt!
The two are both very clear.
I have the Garmin Edge 130 and I love it. Its little doesn't have some of the fancy stuff but works perfect for what i need and can be paired w/ the Varia which was important to me.
Yeah, the Varia Radar is super important to me also. It does work with the Wahoo computers. So thatâs nice. I really wish I could have checked out that 130. Looks like an awesome option. I like simple stuff that just works. đ
This was really helpful! Iâve been using my garmin watch as a bike computer but I would really like something with turn by turn GPS. I didnât even think about visibility in direct sun and here in Texas thereâs a lot of it so I think you definitely helped me in my decision making process!
đ Awesome, thanks for checking it out.
Dope video! Super helpful thank you dude! đ
Youâre welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting
Great review. I've never owned a bike computer, but rather have used just my watch. I've been considering a bike computer, so appreciate this review.
Itâs nice to have for sure!
Great video... I was surprised you swayed toward Wahoo as you seem to be pretty Garmin loyal!! So there was some CZcams honest science there!! Would love to see your opinion on the Roam overall not just the screen (that is apparently killer clear) but pretty $$$. Great vid as always.
Iâll find a way to review that Roam. đ€
Great video mate. Iâve been using the stages dash unit and the screen is incredible đđ»
Oh my gosh. I canât believe I didnât mention that in this review. đ€Šââïž Ok, adding it to the list for future reviews. đŹ
Matt LeGrand ahhh sorry mate donât mean to mess things around for you đ€ŠđŒââïž to be honest I wouldnât have thought of it but Iâve used it for the last few months and have to say the screen is very impressive
Love you check sun light visibility since its a huge feature that just HAVE to be good, but very few reviewers mention.
Yeah, itâs interesting right? High contrast seems to be the ticket. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. đ
I have just been using my Garmin Forerunner but I don't really bike much. I mostly just make videos about running but I am always inspired by bikers and triathletes!!
Hi Parker! I grew up running in highschool and college and I loved every minute of it. Hope you stick with it.
Appreciate the content Matt!!
Thank you! đ
Nice video man! Hope youâre doing good !
Yeah! Weâre doing well! đ
What tech do you use race day? Tri watch all day? Heart rate monitor? How do you sync it all after the race?
I use a Tri watch all day and I actually start a bike computer also because itâs easier to see. Then I just delete one ride from Strava. I keep the heart rate from the watch.
Yessss up the Bolt! I can't bring myself to pay double for the Roam though
I really want to test it. My guess is that the 530 or 830 is putting the hurt on that Roam product.
Really good video. Personally, I don't think that you need to get too techincal or scientific with tests like this - it's all about real-world results. In that case, the best measuring instrument is probably the good old Mark I Eyeball.
I agree. But I do want to rerun this âexperimentâ with more computers. And I like to provide as much non biased numerical data as possible but ultimately it comes down to which one we think looks clearer. đ€·đ»ââïž
"Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?" Groucho Marx. One of my favorite quotes. I've used the CatEye, Garmin 520, Garmin 820, and Elemnt Bolt devices - no contest, the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt has the highest contrast display in direct sunlight, because it uses a monochrome display. Oh, and it doesn't freeze up like Garmin devices, it just works, mile after mile. My only complaint about the Bolt is when you've loaded a route and are on the road approaching a rotary, because it shows a tiny circle, with an even smaller number inside of the tiny circle to tell you which exit to take from the rotary. I cannot read that small number, so instead I have to memorize which turn to take in each rotary ahead of time.
Awesome quote. I actually would have thought that the CatEye would have been a solid option to test. Thatâs for commenting on your own experience. Makes me feel a little less crazy. I will say that the 530/830 seems to be the best devices that Garmin has made in a while. đ€·đ»ââïž But Iâll mostly be sticking to the Bolt.
Matt LeGrand , I liked my CatEye right up until the point that it rattled off the mount and flew onto the road during a descent. Yeah, just a poor mechanical design. Yes, very bright monochrome display like the Wahoo design. The Japanese instructions were not usable, so I had to find a CZcams video from a guy in Colorado explain how to setup my CatEye Stealth 50 device, LOL. CatEye certainly has the best value for the money, but the Stealth 50 design all of the fields were preset at the factory, so you cannot change anything, quite limiting in comparison to other brands.
Bolt for SureïŒïŒ
Iâd love to see an update to the Bolt. đ€
good morning from thailand

Another good video Matt. I had an Edge 800, which was great, 1000 which is terrible (like your 820), and a 1030 which is a bit better. My big beef with the 1000 is the combination of the touch screen and how the software, which provides no tools to deal with its awfulness. For indoor workouts, I have resorted to using just one screen, so that it can't inadvertently scroll left or right. But the field editing by touch holding the field is an absolute nightmare! It constantly activates that feature with sweat drops. Eventually it may go into auto screen lock mode, but often when it's on the wrong screen. I have figured out that stopping the timer with the physical button, and starting it again 1 second later works to go back to the workout screen. This helps, but it's still so infuriating that you can't turn off that touch field editing in the profile, or choose to manually lock the screen, or have the screen begin locked based on profile or anything similar. At minimum, when Garmin activates auto lock, they should make sure they are actually on a workout screen. I have to wonder if no tester at Garmin ever tried this thing under sweat or rain... Frustrating for a $400+ device. I loved it when you chucked your Garmin in the trash can. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to do that. I have thrown it across the room once.
đ - Thanks! After looking at all of these devices, you can really see how Garmin went through series of bad/ok/good screens across there devices in 2015/2017/2019. You should give the 830 or Roam a try. It feels like itâs worth the upgrade at this point. đ
I use the Garmin edge 130 with MIP memory in pixel technology (303x230 1.8â) and for me thereâs no computer to match that screen qualityâs...I donât care if it is black and white...the resolution is amazing...day or night. Color screen gps looks like old color phone screen...really donât like that. Too bad you didnât test it.
I wonder if the black and white with high contrast would actually make it more visible than the 530/830. I would think so. Yeah, I would have really loved to test that one. Iâd like to put it next to the Bolt. But I am planning to redo this video in the future so maybe next time. đ€·đ»ââïž
garmin only (with 1 exception)? seriously? the title should be saying this. biased...
Iâll try to do another similar video in the future with a larger variety of bike computers. Sorry I didnât have access to more options.
