Swimming With The Apple Watch Ultra 2
Hey! I’m thinking about getting either the 255 music, 265, 945 or 165. Which one do you think it’s the best?
Happy Pace 3 user here, thank you for this review brother. Been using the Pace 3 for quite a while now and coming from someone who hates charging their watch regularly the battery life has been solid for me. I also like how the app is user-friendly and how the metric is easy to understand.
I’ve had mine since the end of February. The only real issue is the screen comes on all the time. Wish it had an always off setting, or wake up with a button like my old Fitbit did.
I bought the ultra 2 thinking it might be good. I like it in some respects but nothing is accurate, it is a toy. Altitude miles off, depth miles off, distance miles off. it is actually rubbish but I am stuck with it as it is the one I bought. Compared to the marketing it is an absolute rip off.
I’m surprised you’re having so many issues with it. It might be worth reaching out to Apple to see what’s going on with your watch. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Thanks. I have reached out to Apple and all the help and diagnostics confirmed it was performing as expected. I just think it is entirely inconsistent with the advertising. The compass on the watch rarely agrees with the compass on the iphone 🤷🏻♂️ There is just nothing precision about the functions outside of time measurement. The waterproofness is as advertised but a lot of advertising is fantasy to the extent I really think they should be prevented from suggesting it is a serious peace of kit. It just isn’t and I really wanted it to be as I am all Apple with my tech gear.
Releasing an OLED version alongside the MIP version will attract more buyers. For some people, MIP display is just too unattractive.
I agree. I wonder when Coros will go this route. It could be interesting
second year i use Enduro 2 and i dont want to change it! but Coros 3 is good
It is good. But that Enduro 2 is a fantastic option. That’s actually the watch I have on right now. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I just got an Apple Watch Ultra and tried swimming laps with it and everytime I get in the water, the screen goes black so I can’t view my progress as I’m swimming. It also wasn’t tracking my laps.. any idea what it could be?
That’s an odd one. It’s not something I’ve experienced. Sounds like maybe some sort of battery saving feature maybe? 🤷🏻♂️ I’d go through some settings and make sure the screen is set to always on and any other settings you can think of and try switching backing into the swim activity type to see if it continues to go black. Otherwise maybe reach out to Apple. 😬
Crazy vid keep working
Thanks I think. 🤔
Between Race and garmin 265 which one u recommend
Well everyone has different needs and priorities. The Race is probably more durable due to the materials. The 265 has a bit more features, more accurate HR and better swim support. Hard to suggest one without knowing a lot more about you.
Don’t forget Garmin HAD TO release the 165 mainly because of coros. Lol.
If so, you’d think they would have added a triathlon option on there. 🤔
Beautiful video Matt. I don't need this watch but I enjoyed the video
I just watched your video on the VIC which was amazing. Such a beautiful space. Great work on that one!!!
this is not what I expected, but I'm here for it 🤣
I've got to find a way to keep you guessing here!
Sick video. keep it up
Thanks, will do!
no swimming why wearing the Shirt? shit
*deep things incoming* So strange how world and life works. I got a sad news yesterday, that I need to stop running high volume, doing ultras etc due to a chronical illness that can/will kill me at some point. And the first night after, I dream that I was given this watch by a couple of friends on my birthday to cheer me up. My wife got super upset 😂"You are not supposed to run far anymore!!" And I just threw away my smartwatch straight away and put the Pace 3 on. Unfortunately I woke up before I got to do any training with it 🤣 And then I got to work in the morning and saw your video. Haha. Hilarious and spooky at the same time 😍
Best of luck with the health stuff going on. Hopefully there is another passion project that you can dive into. I’m a bit gutted that your doctors don’t want you to run as much.
@@mlegrand Thanks Matt! All the best your way as well! :)
Geeeeeeeez! Any time i think I'm getting better, just watch one of Matt's videos to see what an experienced editor can do. Oh yeah, nice watch
Oh nice watch 😆. Thank you buddy
The bands are $9 on amazon instead of $29 on the website
Smart find!!! Are they COROS bands?
Still looks laggy on the UI 😢
I have a theory that some of these companies slow down the clock speed of the CPU to reduce battery life usage when it’s not actively being used and then speed it back up when the user starts making their first interactions with the watch. Making that first interaction super super laggy. But it’s just a theory.
I need a watch for military training for running and swimming, and I would appreciate it if I had the option to play music and download offline maps. Do you have another watch with these options and features? (with priority at least money)
That's a hard one. Typically if you're looking for offline maps, music and durability (military grade) it ends up being pretty expensive. I recently reviewed the Suunto watch which might be worth looking at.
Waiting my fr255 just order today. 🎉 What is your advice for old to new, from fr35 to fr255. I hope I will gonna like my new watch 🫶🏽
Oh you're going to love this new 255. I don't know if there's any settings that will transfer over from the FR35. That's been a while. 🤔
I just ran a 10k and most all the “serious” runners seemed to have this watch interesting. Maybe it’s the size. But it was def the most popular I observed.
That is interesting. I would have guessed an Apple Watch or a Garmin.
I have an hard time to choose between 255 music/ 745 and 955 Can anyone help?
I'd either get the 955 or the 255 non music. If you're sure you need music, the 955 has more memory space.
@@mlegrand Listen, I need a watch for military training for running and swimming, and I would appreciate it if I had the option to play music and download offline maps. Do you have another watch with these options and features? (with priority at least money)
forerunner 255 or coros pace 3?
That's a tricky call. I think I'd go 255 which has been on mega sale lately. It's really good.
Hi Matt. Beautiful review! Between this and FR 255 - I’m completely confused. I’m somewhere between beginner and intermediate runner, training for my first marathon, and got a fair bit of half marathons lined up this year. I always carry my phone while running, and currently have an Apple Watch SE. I’m looking to switch that for either the Coros or the FR 255. What would you recommend? Thanks Rohan
Hi Rohan, I'd probably go for the 255. It's a really really great device and it's on mega sale right now. amzn.to/3Ks9IHX
@@mlegrand Thanks for your prompt reply!
thanks you
You're very welcome Andy. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

@@AndyPham155 - I use Adobe tools. Premiere Pro and Lightroom for photos. Photoshop to add text. 👍
hello i am new to these watches, i do only running and some gym session addition to this i play football.. which one is best for me coros or FR165
I have a 165 review coming up in another week or so. It's really great. I'd probably go that way unless you think you need the triathlon mode. I'd also look at the Garmin Forerunner 255 which is on sale right now: amzn.to/3Ks9IHX
@@mlegrand FR255 is now available for the same price so is it better to go with it? or stick to 165
Damn I’m such a wahoo fan but the startup time annoys me
It's the price we pay. I've been using the Roam a fair amount lately but I'm about to review the Hammerhead Karoo 3. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Out of all the watch reviewers, your style and editing is top tier, hell if you designed a watch I’d buy it!
Ha! It’d probably be horrible! 😆
Matt, do you think the Coros heart rate monitor that wears on the arm would be as accurate as a chest strap?
Those arm monitors are excellent. Technically the HR chest strap should still be more accurate as long as it's getting a decent connection. It's picking up on the electrical firing within the heart. But chest straps can have issues if the skin drys out under the strap. Optical HRMs tend to have issues with the bony wrist area because of the bounce and movement. Moving it up the arm tends to improve quality a lot. Hope all is well with you Jeff!
Why are you comparing this to an apple watch? That's not a running watch it's just a fashion accessory.
I'm guessing you've never run with an Apple Watch after about a series 6 or so? They're accurate. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest one to someone who is training for a marathon as long as they're fully onboard with the entire Apple ecosystem.
Love my Pace 3, I've had it since late February. I've never had a Garmin (or any running watch, for that matter), so I can't compare. I turn off the notifications and the touchscreen as I'm happy using the dial. I use an HR strap for more instantaneous and accurate feedback, but on the rare occasions where I run without the chest strap, after the run, the HR results are in line with that of the HR chest strap monitor. I appreciate the sleep monitoring as it helps me be honest about my actual bedtimes and encourages me to give myself a better chance of good sleep by going to bed earlier. I only use the Pace 3 for running and hiking. I'd like the Pod 2, but as that came out a while back, and I'm more focused on base building with HR, I'll wait for the Pod 3 as the pace is laggy. Very happy with the firmware updates since purchasing the watch.
This is awesome feedback Miles. Thanks for posting this. 👌
Thank's for your review. I wanna switch my Apple Watch SE2 . Coros pace 3 will be a good choice to do it or better to buy Garmin? I just want to track my marathon prep without any music, notification etc. One more question is how they are working with intervals running?
The Coros Pace 3 would be a good choice. As I mention in this video, I would look at the Garmin FR 165 as well. It's excellent and I should have a review video out for it in about a week or so. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand One more question sir. Garmin FR 165 better than FR255? I'm so confused what what should i buy...
@@yi8031 - The 255 has a few more features but not as sharp of a screen. If you’re mostly running, either would be perfectly fine.
@@yi8031 I do have a Garmin FR 165 video coming up this next week!
@@mlegrand i am already waiting for this!
Great to see review after couple of months and vid quality is outstanding! Subscribed for these reasons and hope channel will grow!
Thanks Mike for the sub! Much appreciated. The channel has been on a slow growth burn for a while which has been perfect 👌
Great video - I especially loved the retro look to your battery comparison chart between the Pace 2 & Pace 3, very slick!
Thank you Chris!!!
@@mlegrand I also liked how you illustrated that (and I’m paraphrasing) for the average normal casual runner, the GPS tracks on most COROS, Garmin, Apple, etc devices will be just fine. I think people get caught up in micro analysis - great points Matt!!
Amazing video Matt. Your intros are amazing that red looks nice same with the new blue. Hope you are enjoying training and good luck at your next race
Thanks!!! I just need to find a weekend without kids swim meets going on. 😬
@@mlegrandkids meets can take time as a former swimmer who even swim in college until its program got cut
Super stellar review as always, man. Super stellar. The track to watch band was so good - running shots in forest - macro work - even the large "100" and small little 'days' in the corner was great
Wow, thank you Hunter!
@@mlegrand all you! You did all the hard work I just appreciated the final product!
I can't seem to find whether you mention your wrist measurement. Mine is around 17cm so keen to compare.
Mine are about 16.5 so pretty slim. I've become accustomed to bigger watches and I don't mind this watch at all. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Thanks a lot for the video and your reply. It really does help! Look forward to more of your videos.
I just found your videos and it’s being great bc my boyfriend is falling in love with running and I want to support him as I’m a monster that dislike running 💀 He is planning on doing a Triathlon in a couple years and I want to give him something that will stay with him for a long time. There’s a sale going on and I don’t know what go get him fr 265 or fr 955. What do you recommend?
That's a hard call. Those are both awesome options. He'd be perfectly fine with either. The trade off is maps and longer battery life on the 955 vs the very nice bright beautiful screen on the 265. If he works outdoors or something like that, I'd go for the 955 because the screen does well in that scenario, otherwise I think I'd go for the 265. You're a very kind monster to be buying a nice watch for your boyfriend 😂 but you should try walk/jogging. 3 minutes running, 2 minutes walking. I bet you would be very surprised to see how well you would do in your small local 5k (3 mile) fun run. Best of luck to you both!
@@mlegrand thank you so much!! I went for the 955, I’ll let you know if he likes it. I’ll try jogging and I’ll be back at the end of the year 😂 thank you for your help
Great video. I am trying to find a watch and am paralyzed by all the choices. I am watching all your videos to help narrow down the field. You are incredibly thorough. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I used to be a college distance runner, but I took off time from running. I am getting back into it. Projected to do my first marathon in April 2025. I am a 57 year old woman looking for a watch to help with tracking, planning workouts, and recovery. Suggestions?
Hi Amy, I was a long distance college runner also! I have a lot of suggestions for you to consider. This COROS Pace 3 is an excellent option. I don't think you'd be disappointed with it at all. I would also highly recommend you check out the Garmin FR 165 (I'll have a video in a week or so about it) but it's excellent and it's ideal for a budget marathon training watch ($250). It has a music edition that cost more and I don't think is necessary but I do like the color options of the music editions. 🤷♂️ My wife also gets to test a lot of running watches and lately she's been wearing the Garmin Venu 3 (video here: czcams.com/video/Q7JfejqxJek/video.htmlsi=Kjq4ef8fwTW5Q4Yz). The Venu series is designed to be a little bit more of a smart watch with a speaker and a microphone and the Garmin Forerunner series of watches are aimed at more serious runners. But either of these watches would be wonderful for marathon training. There's also the Garmin Forerunner 265 which is a very nice watch. It's a step up in features from the FR 165. (another video: czcams.com/video/Es5PO2ifwsQ/video.htmlsi=IVJTWhTkdrlZAyPH) Ultimately, I think you'll be really happy with any of these watches and I would recommend looking at some of the color options and styles to help guide your purchase. You do have to wear it after all. And with regards to training. Start slow and then go ahead and slow down a little bit more out there. Us retired distance runners have the tendency to settle back into our old 'easy' paces. Best of luck with training and the watch purchase. - Matt
@@mlegrand Hi Matt. All the watches you mentioned were on my list except for the Venue 3. I was looking at Suunto Race and Polar Vantage V3, but those two watches are a bit more than what I need. I really appreciate the time you took to respond to my comment. I also 100% agree with your advice. Thank you for all the content and for linking your videos. I appreciate you and will be returning to your channel for future advice.
greetings from 2024, i've bought this beast for 183 euro (used, good condition, May 2024) and don't even try to find someone who enjoyes this computer more than me now
Awesome feedback!!!
I disagree with your comment about the GPS not being a big deal. In your comparison about back in the day you ran without GPS. Yes back then they either didn't have it or it was garbage. In today's market if you are going to want someone to pay hundreds of dollars and your competitors have accurate GPS, then yes its a big deal. No excuse from a company that sponsors runners across many categories. Love your content. Keep it up.
Good point Nicholas! I could have shown a lot more GPS plots in this video but I always worry about that stuff getting repetitive and boring but I had a mix of results with this watch. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great quality video. I've struggled to get the comparison/review I need to make the decision on the Venu 3, until now. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
On point as always. Coros dual band gps watches are laggy. My Pace 2 is more accurate than my new Coros Vertix 2s. I got my first gps watch at age 40 (10) years ago. I ran from age 14 to 40 without a gps watch.
Yeah, we survived some hard times. 😆
Hi Matt, great video as usual. I'm actually torn between white or black option for the pace 3, as you mentioned the white version has some discoloration, are you referring to the band or the actual white part of the watch? thanks
Just the nylon band in my experience. Best of luck Ian!
Does coros have media control of music on your phone?
No it doesn’t control music on your smart phone. Only the mp3s that on the device.
My coros pace last for 4years then water go inside ,is that's normal?
That’s a good question for COROS. It doesn’t sound good to me. 🤷🏻♂️
Awesome Vid Matt! But I think you haven't touch much about the most recent update & some of it are annoying for Pace 3 users at very least 😅. I think Coros did somehow mess-up the update this April-May like Backlight issue, Auto-Rep, Activity UI - but not a deal breaker and something they could improve in next updates.
That’s really good insight. I haven’t noticed all of these issues. I’m going to poke around a bit tonight. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Solid, objective, summary of the Pace 3 and the Coros ethos. Given the price-point of the Forerunner 255 (USA) I would say the Pace 3 takes a distant 2nd. With respect to the Forerunner 165 tough call but between the two and it really depends on each individuals' use case. Matt, consider doing a review of basic running watches like the Timex Ironman, Casio G-Shock DWH5600 and GBD200(both now sync with Strava). Then compare with the budget modern watches like the Pace 3 and the Forerunners 55, 165 or 255. Maybe throw out tips on using a more basic watch for runs/activities and the possible upsides. Showing a progression of change that has occurred with tech and fitness. I only mention this because in this 100 day review you touch on it while discussing GNSS chipset accuracy and the lunacy that comes from obsessing over specs and data.
Great suggestion. I used a Timex for a long long time and it was fantastic. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
One of the best reviews I saw
