This is the BMW X3, but it’s packing the legendary B58 straight 6 under the hood which makes it the M40 version. And while we’ve had experience with the previous car, this is the LCi or facelifted version - so is it still the best sporty compact SUV on sale? That’s what we’re here to find out
And how could we not start with the beating heart, the B58 from BMW
However, there’s a difference between this one and the pre-facelifted version
THIS B58 is now packing a 48V mild hybrid system
That 48V system itself is good for 11 hp, but it’s not exactly intended to boost performance much on its own. The system is intended to take load off the engine by running onboard electronics etc. This allows the engine to better turn its explosions into speed. Interestingly enough, the addition of the 48V system doesn’t alter the 382 hp and 369 lbft claim from the last X3
But here’s the thing. We all know this engine is underrated
It’s making more like 420 hp
AND the 48V system DOES do helpful things like smooth out start/stop and gear changes from the ZF 8 speed transmission
What t results in is 0-60 in just about 4 seconds flat…pretty impressive
There’s no surprise this X3 M40 is quick but as a sports SUV from BMW there’s also an expectation that it can get around corners…
And, no surprise here, it goesa round corners very well
I mean, not as well as a coupe or sedan, but in terms of sport SUVs, behind the wheel this shares a place at the top of the heap with company like the Porsche MAcan GTS
It’s got adaptive suspension
It’s got a nice and progressive steering feel
And it’s got a LSD on the back
I mean even in these wintery February conditions this thing is really rewarding to push hard
HOWEVER, this X3 in M40 guise has been accused in the past of being too narrowly focused on sporting performance and doesn’t split the personality enough to deliver a luxury-level ride…So does that still ring true for this facelifted model?
To address this we have to think about things in relative terms
With the raised ride height of an SUV
And with a highler roofline there’s more weight higher up
And what that results in is the suspension needing to be stiffer to deliver the sporting performance
And yes, this X3 has adaptive suspension, but even dialed back the dampers remain a little stiffer than you’d have in the 4 cylinder X3
But again, you bought an X3 with an M badge on it so you could have seen that coming
And in truth, while the ride isn’t a floaty luxury boat, it’s still pretty comfy even on these terrible West Allis roads - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Completely agree the little suv is amazing. It has plenty of power and drives more than a sports car than a luxury SUV. Did you know that with the red interior you can’t get the cooled seats? That’s why that car doesn’t have them. Only thing I’ve noticed so far is the stereo system could use some help. And additional woofer somewhere in the back would do wonders. Other wise petty well perfect. Can’t thank Mike and the guys at international enough.
And thank you for the great video !
it's a great car! I did not know about the red interior; interesting!
I've watched hundreds of X3 M40i reviews, and this is the first one on 19" tires discussing comfort and quietness. Thanks.
glad it was helpful🙏
I have the 19" tires on my 2021 X3 M40i. Test drove both (21" vs 19") and definitely preferred the smaller tires. They don't look quite as sharp as the 21" tires but are worth the upgrade for comfort IMHO.
I have the 20" and rpelaced teh run flats with regular Continental extremecontact DWS06 and it transformed the ride.
I went down to 18 inch with DWS 06+. So much better with more sidewall. Technically out of spec but lots of clearance.
@@w17force1 I have 20' and the ride on 20 is also good. I did not want the stiff ride on the 21 wheels. It may be okay for some but I considered the roads where I live and long term comfort.
This is nearly an identical M40i to the one we will be picking up in Greer at the Performance Center next month. Alpine White over Tacora Red Sensatec with the carbon fibre trim; but non-shadowline. I really appreciate seeing that tacora sensatec/carbon fibre interior! I totally agree with you on the benefits of iDrive 7 that retains the functional buttons now buried in the multi-level iDrive 8. One more reason we purchased this 2023 vrs the upcoming refresh. Thanks for posting!
Agree 100%, love my x3 m40i.
M40i is a beast. No better performance at that value in that class.
100%
I just love my X3 M40d, it the nicest vehicle I’ve ever owned with all the performance you’ll ever need. Don’t forget to spec “adaptive suspension “ for UK driving.
UMMMM. FOR SURE "Bother" with the full M version!!!! I have the X3M Comp and its WORTH it for sure!
Did you change springs for better ride quality?
Purchased my 2024 X3 M40i three weeks ago and love it. I thought I would miss my 2016 435ix grand coupe, but I don’t :)
Great review! Just took delivery of 2023 X3 M40i in Brooklyn Grey and tecora red seats. I'm loving the sound, drive, style and the fun. Wish there was a subwoofer in the back!
It's really missing one!
I have the 2018 X3 M40i. I've had it for 5 years now. I test drove the X6M Competition at the BMW Exclusive AutoCross and it's a must that I get the X3M Competition. What a machine!
I have a 2019 m40i with about 51k miles on it. It's been the best, most reliable, fun car I've ever owned. I'm considering upgrading to a 2023 before they stop making them. They want a lot of $$ to move up 4 years, so I may just wait and buy a used 2023 in a couple of years.
I have a 2019 m40i with 88k miles on it and it’s amazing but just make sure they check your motor mounts and I have a coolant leak but I still have a extended warranty so it’s covered!
2018 here. I like the blue calipers better than the red ones
im with ya
Just got mine and I love it!!
Nice!
I have the 2018 X3 M40I and its older and does not have the mild hybrid but I have added a Carbahn Tune so now its running close to 450 HP and 445 Lb Ft. Makes the need for a proper M car not as prominent. The new LCI looks good. Perhaps when mine is up there on miles in a few years I will pick up a 2023 used X3 M40I
the 2018 was the first X3 M40 i drove and it was such a big step up - really nice car
I took delivery of my '23 M40i in December, my third BMW since 2011, and it's a blast to drive on the winding country roads where I live. I was surprised to get 30.9 mpg while averaging 78mph on a long trip. My only negative is there is no tach display on the HUD. For potential buyers: I made the mistake of not upgrading to the Harmon-Kardon speakers. The standard speaker is a bit lame.
Usually, standard options on BMWs are some parts bin class or just the minimum amount of technology (5 years old techs I suppose)
You cab add in menu not a tach but line graph for rpms in are 22 x6 40i that works good.
The HK system is not that good either. The Jeep's alpine system blows it away so bad.
Love it!
Got the real (S58) M and am glad I did. That roar under heavy throttle was worth the price
I’m with you on this one. I had a 2019 M40i for a year and traded in for a 2020 X3M Competition which I have now had for 2 years. Full fat and head turning roar when accelerating....
2019 x3m m40i sounds way better than the x3m
@@Mike-cz2ywlies.
Have a base 30i and it still does 0-60 in 5.5s. I can only imagine how amazing the m40i feels! One day baby!!
U will love the m40i. I love mine. I got it build in last December as a 23 model. super nice
Upgrade, and you will be blown away with the performance difference!
I test-drove both cars back in 2021. I MUCH preferred the M40i version's performance and bought one for about $12K more. Recommend the 19" rims for comfort.
It's extremely addictive, first drive you will be shaking lol
If you get this new LCI M40i, please spec bigger rims. It gives you a wider section tire (275s) versus the 245 sections pictured in the review.
We chose the 19" wheels...no additional cost and offer a square tire (verses staggered) setup making tire rotations possible. Those 19's will likely become my winter wheels next season; 19's better for winter with their corresponding narrower tires. To each their own....I'll have a universe of additional aftermarket wheel options for the "summer wheels".
So, I have an X3M Comp and my mom has an X3 M40. The one I would skip is the X3M non-comp. If you're going to have the stiff ride of the M, you may as well get the real S58 (mine dyno'd at 545bhp), not the detuned one. I love the ride of the X3 M40, but my X3MC destroys it. That said, the speed of the Comp can sneak up on you so quickly, you have to be on your game. And, it will scare the hell out of your passengers...something about being higher up.
I own a 2020 pre LCI and that includes the same B58Tu and mild hybrid system as the LCI facelifted models. Mine sits on the bigger wheels, but the ride quality with them is an absolute pain, and there has been an occasion or so where i’ve taken out a wheel just due to the lack of sidewall combined with rural Oklahoma roads.
oh man that's rough! so are you not enjoying the car overall?
I love my 2023 x3M40i , I have the black sapphire w. Shadowline pkg, black wheels w. Hi perform non RFT, tacora red interior..few opts an ofc the rear sports diff $1300 charge 😬. Excellent review! I love the sportiness. I enjoy it everyday
Is it true that the red seats do not have ventilation?
@@jebakaPiSd yes unfortunately but they are perforated making them not so hot to the touch. My windows are dark front windshield to rear glass window, so less uv gets in.
@@Mr.Lambert777 Thanks ,greetings from Poland and happy New Year .
@@jebakaPiSd thank you ! Same to you ! Happy New Year from the USA!
Have a 2019 and I love it
The godly B58!!!
How did you make it so loud? Please do tell my M40i 2023 not as loud
Hi. Is the color an Alpine White or Mineral white?
I think the 22 and 23 are the best model years with iDrive 7. I tried out iDrive 8 but hated the less physical buttons and more glare under the sun. I’m guessing the next gen BMW will not put in B58 and will go with 4 cylinder only like what Mercedes does with its GLC.
I totally agree...a prime motivator for us in ordering the 2023 M40i. Burying controls within the multi-level infotainment screen is to me, a hazardous trend in interior auto design...but hey, I'm an old guy! 🤣
We❤ ours!
I love mine.
I went from a 2019 Audi A6 to 24 X3 M40i and absolutely love the X3. I thought I was going to get less tech for some reason but X3 with Prem and Park Dist control has MORE tech than the A6 (even the 2024 A6). For example, the 360 camera view offers more information than in the Audi. I highly recommend the X3 M40i.
1500 for stage 2 mhd and downpipe u faster than the stock x3m
I'm leasing a 2023 X3M Competition and I've been wondering if the extra horsepower was worth the extra 15 grand, thinking about switching over to a X3 M40i when my lease is up and saving like $250 a month
I am leasing the 23 x3M40i, with the sports diff, yoko summer tires. I guess it all depends on rather or not you use all that power daily. I think it’s making more than what bmw states for both our cars. I want the M3 lol,so the question is , is it worth the extra money?
Great Review! I just took possession of one with 20" wheels. The ride is excellent! Way, far better than some of the reviews (not this one!) might lead one to believe. I've driven sports cars for decades, and this is just about stinking perfect. It's faster than snot, corners like a dream and even my wife thinks its a comfy ride. People who think these vehicles ride "hard" should get a Caddy. Or maybe just stay at home, sitting on their Lazy Boy playing video games. 😁
Great video! Would you take the X3 over the 23 Macan GTS? If so why? Awaiting delivery for my 23 Macan GTS
thanks! TBH if I had Macan GTS money I would go Macan GTS no question. The Macan has a higher performance ceiling, but you make tradeoffs in places like rear seat space and trunk space so as long as you're fine with that then i'd lean GTS
Thanks for the feedback!
an added volt hybrid system give the vehicle more torque too. Personally I think the added volt hybrid system is just another expense down the line. My moms jeep wrangler has a volt hybrid system and it's peppy too, but its not a real jeep. My mom doesn't off-road, she just likes her cute jeep. I'm sure many customers like to be cute and feel like they are getting performance too by paying an extra $11K for a little electric motor that is gimmicky.
I have this beast. Fantastic, but I agree the ride quality is stiff, but still acceptable. We don't talk about mpg with B58 under the hood lol. And in European roads, I feel no luxury rides with this thing. Having said that, it's still an enjoyable car that makes you smile every day.
Very fuel efficient for that kind of power are you kidding? Nobody complains about fuel consumption in any BMW equipped with the B58!
@@germanengineering204 that's why I said we don't talk about mpg, we just enjoy it!! 😁😁
@@yutubabe right on my friend I was a bit confused!👍
If someone wants a lame pillow ride they should buy a Lexus with that baleen whale grill.😝
@@Snaproll47518 exactly mate 😆😆
Why did they make the center console black with the red interior for this year! That kills it, they should have just stuck with all red
I have been saving some money for a used 2020 or 2021 x3 m40i. Any long term owners. Can you please tell me what’s the maintenance is like. Is it too expensive? Or has any reliability issues?
I had a 2018 X3 30i that I recently traded in for my '23 X3 M40i. In 5-years I replaced one set of tires and there was a recall on the inlet flap actuators. It was the most flawless car I ever owned in 50-years of driving. I hope for such good fortune with my new X3.
@@Snaproll47518 thanks for the reply. Enjoy your new x3.
I have the 2018 m40i.
Sunroof shade stuck once and needed reset, front grill actuator/flap recall, weird rear vent blasting hot air..
Car has 28k miles... not too thrilled about reliability.
Drives nice tho, never lets you down.
I’m a little late but I want this car. Or should I just get the m competition? Is it a huge difference? Is it worth the money?
Get the X3M Competition. I had a new 2020 X3 M40 and now a 2021 X3MC that I ordered new. The X3MC is a total Beast.
x3 M40i got micro hybrid from 2017...
Lmao at 420 horsepower 😅
@downshift studios. Ugh. Cannot decide between this and the Genesis GV70 3.5TT. The BMW has the better power train, more drama, better sound... but the Genesis is otherwise a better car, more comfortable, more creature comforts. Please share your thoughts.
The BMW is probbaly the more refined car, but that Genesis GV70 isn't far behind and to me it's a more special experience (especially since you see so few of them on the road =...and they look awesome)
What's the song?
i dont remember but i get all my music from Artlist
But is it better than a X3 M??
The freewheeling of the engine on coasting, and non-defeatable stop-start in comfort mode ruin the engine for me. I don't need to be in sport mode all the time. I want to be able to turn off the safety eco nanny crap of when I want. I have a 2018 M40i, I see no reason to trade it in on a 2023.
This can be done by computer
Wind noise is irritating. Seems worse on the driver side.
I had a 2018 X3 and the '23 wind noise is a bit louder. It's the M mirrors. I never sat in the passengers seat in either.
upgrade to double-side window will fix this
@@Snaproll47518 I personally think the build quality changed. I had a 2020 x3m (non comp) had m side mirrors and never this much wind noise. Perhaps the car overall was a bit noisier which is why I might not have noticed.
@@danielchen426 The noise level is not really objectionable. I't certainly quieter than my wife's Lexus. The solution is to have the radio on.

India this costs 1,60,000 $
Actual 420 HP? Really?
the engine has been independently dynoed close to 420hp, yes
@@dwnshft Wow!
I never trust YT car reviewers who constantly wear sunglasses.
Its 2024 and people make videos about it. A turbo inline6 will always make power. The 48V system is a fools paradise.
Canadians shouldnt do car reviews.
Don't bother with the m40 get the 30 it's fine.
You don't do your reputation any favours - the ride is jarring. If anyone wants some comfort as they drive around, this isn't the vehicle for them.
So, am not listening any further
Nope. Passed on this and bought the Porche Macan. The X3 M40i is not the best SUV you can buy.
what trim macan did you go with
Lol, that's what you want to believe because you don't want buyers remorce.
A Macan with specs like the m40i is also $30k more and much smaller. Maybe best small/mid size sport luxury vehicle for the price.
The Macan is tiny….
I have the 2018 m40i.
I drove the gts macan and it's definitely even more of a driver's car, no argument abt it.
But it's smaller and pricier. I cant personally justify it.
After the initial excitement goes away, u need the practicality and not huge maintenance bills
We own a 2020 X3 M40i(wife’s) and a 2022 X3MC(mine). While the M40i is a great car and plenty fast, it isn’t a M. The X3MC is basically a M3 SUV. It is way, way faster than the M40i and handle like a M3. Also, the Merino leather interior blows away the cheaper Vernasco leather.
