- Interview with former MH-53 Pilot Lt. Col.(Ret.) Richard Herr at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton Ohio.
Air Force special operations forces used the Sikorsky MH-53M to covertly enter enemy territory. Capable of operating at day or night or in bad weather, these helicopters conducted long-range, low-level missions to insert, extract, and resupply special operations forces.
The MH-53 helicopters were originally HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giants" used by the U.S. Air Force in the Southeast Asia War. Over the years, however, they received many upgrades and improvements. After the 1960s, they were completely re-skinned and had their engines and rotors replaced. Along with these improvements came a new designation, MH-53 ("M" for Multi-mission and "H" for helicopter). - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Retired PJ- the younger generations will never know how awesome this machine is/was.
It's my older brother lol my dad's first kid he was a crew chief
I was a crew chief on the Pave Low for most of my AF career. Most rewarding job/Aircraft in the AF. What amazing memories with the greatest men and women in the Air Force!!!
Dude looks so happy talking about flying this thing. It must be 1000x more of a rush than driving a racecar
It is. I flew them for 7 awesome years.
this was my cousin, r.i.p.
I flew with Rich and had the honor of knowing this OUTSTANDING Pave Low Pilot and Officer. Rich was a fantastic friend and WARRIOR! R.I.P. to a great Pilot!
We didn't know that he passed away, that's very sad. We loved his visit!!!
What a beast! I was a USAF CH-53/ HH-53/ MH-53/ TH-53 mechanic for 12 years. I was stationed at Sembach, Hurby, Osan, Kirtland. Did TDY's about everywhere. Worked flightline and every maintenance job a 53 was assigned to do. These machines could do it all.
Worked on the MH-53J/M at Depot, if asked to do it again "Get me some Tools, a Job Guide, and let's get to WORK"... "PAVELOW Leads"!
This man interviews extremely well....
I'd love to hear him for a full talk on the "So there I was..." podcast.
What a great story! Thank you for your service!
He's right about how nimble the MH-53 was. There is a YT video from a demo flight by Sikorsky and it shows the MH-53 doing loops and rolls. it was a sad day when the AF retired the MH-53. Personally, I think this copter has a very distinct and cool look unlike the Osprey that replaced it.
If you pause at 5:44 you can see my uncles name on a panel tech sergeant (ret.) Jeffery “mike” rector. I have his uniform and hat but it’s to big now hopefully I’ll grow into it though.
nice! thats my late cousin in the interview
I believe that bird went from the battlefield to the museum without being cleaned, hence the dirt.
My second favorite rotary wing airframe. H-3 Jolly is my all time favorite.
Thanks I was a CH-3E Jolly Green mechanic
@@LK-pc4sq Wow. Good stuff!
Flew with the 551st as an Operational Support Medic at Kirtland back in the 90s. Pave Lows ROCK!! A lot of great memories flying with these aircrews, PJs, CCTs out in the mountains of New Mexico. That big beast can turn and burn!
Thank you for your service!!!
I wish the United States Air Force Special Operations Command would bring back the Pave Lows. They could be the Sikorsky MH-53X Pave Low V with the United States Marine Corps new Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion as the common airframe! It could work with the Bell/Boeing CV-22B Osprey Tilt Rotor Aircraft that replaced these!
The V-22 Osprey replaced the Jolly green but wasnt a like for like replacement. The Osprey has superior range but cant carry anywhere near the Pavelow's payload
You cannot be an IDIOT to fly one of these massive beast. Very intelligent and skilled man here!

I heard on a podcast somewhere "I love aviation, if you respect and follow the rules you have a blast, if you do not respect and follow the rules you die......it's a very simple privilege of pleasure"
The Air Force needs to get some 53Ks
The United States Air Force Special Operations Command Sikorsky MH-53M Pave Low IV along with the MH-53J Pave Low III and older MH-53H and HH-53H Pave Low II and HH-53B/C Super Jolly Green Giants that they came from are some of my most favorites Helicopters of all time, especially within the United States Air Force and the Special Operations Forces! This baby as done it all from Combat Search and Rescue of downed Pilots and Aircrew to hauling Naval Special Warfare Operators of the United States Navy SEAL Team-5 and their Desert Patrol Vehicles and our Polish Army GROM ( "Thunder" ) Special Operators to capture the Mukarayin Dam in Iraq at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
My dad was a crew chief at hurlburt field 05-07
I remember that guy
I was a crew chief on 357
Do you know the name skelly?
Saw one of these send people down the deck like they were leaves
Interested in whether the Air Force considered going with the triple engined -53 as a follow up.
Yes, they did in the 1990s. But it never got far from what I remember.
I Hope the Air Force uses the New MH-53K's
@@johnreynolds6291 they probably won’t considering the Osprey and Pave Hawk do what the Pave Low did already
@@SynGates-bm5pw osprey and pave hawks cannot do the pavelow mission
@@libertywayranch2424 The Osprey does do the Pave Low's job and does it well
Tell that helicopter pilot guy the corvette LS7 engine has a factory design flaw in the head. They didn’t machine the valve guides concentric and the hollow stem valves will break sending the valve into the engine immediately stopping the engine.
Richard, How’s the mistress flying?
It crashed on Monday. 2 lost.
rest in peace cousin. fly high, you will be so missed.
