- Here we show how to replace the tape loop on a Roland RE-501 Chorus Echo. It's the same process for all Roland Tape Delays, like the Space Echo RE-20, RE-301 and RE-505. #roland #tapeecho #spaceecho

I couldn't help but smile when I heard the repeats at the end, what a beautiful sound
Noooooooo don't use isopropyl on the pinch roller! (the bit you called the capstan... Which is actually the metal shaft that turns the pitch roller) It's rubber so alcohol will dry it out and make it harden and crack. ONLY use iso on the heads and metal parts that contact the tape. You need to use a proper rubber cleaner for the pinch rollers. Someone also mentioned cotton gloves, may seem unnecessary but really helps keep dirt and grime from your hands off the tape and components.
Agreed!
I have RE-150.
Thanks for the good information!!
Doctor Mix, your channel is definitely one of my favourites! Especially if you're showing gears, that's so amazing! 🙌
Amazing machine,great sound!
Thanks, I got a RE-501 recently-ish (my first tape delay) and after a few months of normal operation the tape it came with went off and got stuck. Fortunately I had some replacement loops ordered earlier and with this guide I had it fixed in about 20 minutes (next time I'll probably be able to do it in 10 :D )
Thanks for the video ! What do you think about comparation between RE501 vs RE201 ?
Hi Doc! Whats the minimum size for a new tape? I just notice there are sellers on eBay, most of them are 1m tapes.
Thanks for your time!
There is no rule I think, the longer it is, the longer it lasts.
What's percentage of isopropyl did you use ? I think 90% is too high for the capstans. I believe the tape has to be super strong and thick to prevent long term stretch - wow and flutter.
Sadly i dont own one. But it was interesting to see anyways
Why twice as long as the old one? I was wondering why there was such a long loop anyway. Is that to lower the wear and tear?
Yes! It means you don't need to change the loop as often.
He measured the loop first and the new tape needs to be twice as long, hence after taping the ends together to a new loop, it's only half long because it is a loop tape again. Got it?
This is the wrong tape and you will ruin the tape echo eventually. It needs to be special lubricated tape. The correct type is RT1L. This is designed for this machine. Any normal reel to reel tape will eventually kill the heads on a Space Echo rendering it useless. I know this as I took it to a technician once who didn't use lubricated tape and it killed my Space Echo within a month.
Using the wrong tape is definitely not a good idea - a lot of the tapes available online go "sticky" after a while and will certainly give you problems. But RT1L loops are in short supply and an expensive option now. There are tried and (very) tested alternatives out there - we only recommend tapes from echofix.com - we wrote a thing about this here: soundgas.com/pages/which-tape-should-i-use-in-my-roland-echo
