- This is my second time preforming this service on a space echo so I'm not claiming to be a professional, but hopefully you can learn something from this video if you are trying to do the same thing.
First off I bought my parts from EchoFix Australia. I got the Roland Tape Echo full service kit. here is the link... echofix.com/collections/space...
Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions and thanks for watching!
Song in the background is just an improvised A minor add 9 arpeggio through a Juno 106 and into the space echo with filters, lfo, time and intensity being messed with to create the sound. - Hudba
WOW! Look at all the gunk from just an inital cleaning!!! Yikes! Must have sounded significantly better just from that.
I've got a space echo that I haven't used for years. When I tried, the reverb works, but no echo. I took the top off - the metal post beside the pinch roller is turning when I turn it on, but the tape isn't moving.
Is the pinch roller meant to roll? because mine doesn't. I tried unscrewing it to lift it off as you have done when replacing with the new green one. But it doesn't easily lift off and I haven't forced it.
Does your pinch roller 'roll' or is it stationary like mine?
Hey, it is supposed to spin. Replacing it could do the trick, bc there is a bearing in there that could be not well lubricated. The pinch roller can get dry rotted over time too. See if you can get that other one on and let me know if that helps!
What’s the difference between the original black roller and the green one?
Simon Tay as they get older the rubber just dry rots a bit, so it doesn’t grip the tape as well. Making it more prone to slipping. Plus the green looks visually appealing!
Hey I have a Japanese unit and the correct voltage converter I’ve had it serviced but after a few months the delay stopped working again and only works when it wants to, the roller doesn’t spin and I’m assuming it’s the motor again would you say it’s salvageable or not?
chris morales Hey Chris, sorry for the troubles. It is difficult to say, there are 3 guys I know of that are masters at these repairs. EchoFix(Australia), SoundGas(UK), and Brian Sours in the states comes recommended by EchoFix. Try reaching out to one of them. Good luck, and let me know if you find out anything I’d love to know!
Nice vid! I have an issue with my unit. When I rotate the repeat rate all the way up, the sound gets higher in pitch to a certain point, then slows down a bit and then gets higher again. It doesn't have this nice steady pitch curve effect. I noticed that occurs even when the pitch roller is disassembled with no tape. The motor accelerates then goes down then accelerate again. Any idea? Thanks!
Erwan Mirabeau thank you! The bearing on the motor may need to be cleaned. I had one unit that even when I wasn’t messing with the rate knob that pitch would warble quite a bit and it was bc of the motor. I’m not really an expert, but maybe research some about the issues the motor/bearing can cause and maybe you can find the answer. Hope that helps!
@@oscillatemusic8811 I cleaned everything, lubed the pinch roller and checked the lower bearing. I opened the unit and sprayed contact in every pots. Everything is fine now. Tks again M. Oscilate music! I m think about investing in a new pinch roller, felts ans lower bearing, just to be sure.
Erwan Mirabeau good to hear! And echofix is the one of the best places to buy any parts that you need.
@@oscillatemusic8811 Sure!
Are you not supposed to put two felts on the tape guide latch side?
percussionologist hey, I only put them where I saw there were felts before. This was only my second time doing it so it’s possible I missed something. Not sure if this is a question or polite way of telling me I missed something. Feel free to elaborate. Thanks!
percussionologist It is just one felt per side, however, one felt is thicker than the other.
What is the handling of the tape when the heads are being cleaned and same tape used ?
It was a new roll of tape from echo fix, so the old tape was just thrown away.
@@oscillatemusic8811 I understand that but the question I’m posing is what do you with the tape if you’re reusing it? Or you have to replace the tape every time you clean the heads ?
Oh, now I understand. You can reuse it. If you open up the one thumb screw that swings like a door you can put it back and then lay it there unspooled, put the plastic top back on and when you turn it on it will feed through the “door”. If you don’t put the plastic back on sometimes it will push itself out of the tray and you’ll have to restart. Sorry it’s hard to explain, but pretty easy to do.
@@oscillatemusic8811 thank you!
Can the tape head wear out so the unit is unusable
Roland Jc120 Tunes I have never personally seen that happen, but occasionally a head can break, usually when the unit is not well taken care of.
Oscillate Music so if a head does break it unit has had it there’s nothing you can do about
No, that one head could be replaced. Those parts are hard to find but occasionally available at echofix in AUS. Soundgas in the UK sells and fixes stuff. Both of those companies have been great resources for helping me learn about space echos.

I don't know if this will get a response but I have to give it a shot! I just got my first Space Echo. Guy I got it from inherited it, said he hasn't worked on it. It's impeccably clean, BUT VU meter lights up but doesn't react, and more importantly the repeats are very quiet. Even with the Intensity and Echo Volume cranked, it's still underwhelming and fades quickly. Pinch roller is original (black rubber) but clean. All the felts are very very clean (and green, where they green originally??) Is it a simple head cleaning and tape replacement? VU meter just stuck? (seems to move when I tilt the unit, maybe a connection issue?) Anyway, just throwing this out into the digital ether, in a few places, hoping to get a response, thanks strangers!
Hey, so the first thing I would check is the felt that’s attached to the little metal arm. Reference around 4:50 in the video to know what part I’m talking about. While the unit is on light push that felt towards the tape and see if the echos and repeats come back. If they do all you need to do is try to get that angle right by adjusting the screws and the angle until you like how it works. Hope this helps!
@@oscillatemusic8811 dumb move. pushed a little too hard and pinched it. Tape backed up. Not for some reason I’m getting no input signal at all. Strange that the tape getting Orr track a bit (it’s back on now, would effect input. Maybe there’s something more going on. Perhaps above my pay grade. Have more tips? (Maybe time for a pro visit?)
upon further inspection, input is still there. output is just WAY lower then before even.
It is hard to say, too much more without having it in front of me. Sorry about that. I just know in the past I purchased a different space echo that was doing a very similar thing and is all I had to was change the angle and tighten the screw back down, and it brought the repeats and oscillations back.
@@oscillatemusic8811 So I ignorantly switched to a TS cable and that's why I lost output. Sir Dumb they call me. So touching the copper bar does nothing. Still quiet and short repeats. Next step? I will try cleaning the heads.
