From someone who has had homeless family members a lot of them burn bridges with the people that love them (stealing, fighting, drugs, alcohol) or they just don’t want help period.
You can care immensely for a loved one that lives on the street. But kidnapping, even a loved one, is a crime. And shooting the victim shouldn't have happened. To many officers made FOMO shots because they wanted to be included.
I was thinking Zach is right, but just then I saw one camera mostly of an officers butt. Where just to the side I could see one arm with a knife coming down on one of the guys chest. That's when all the shots rang out.

Many people don't know or don't want to know how high the percentage of homeless is that suffer from a serious mental illness such as bipolar or schizophrenia. So please stop saying it's about them being mentally ill because its not. Between certain death which is a knife blow that can be delivered in less than 1 second, so the more shots there are in 1 second the more chances the victim has to not be stabbed and killed by this blow. If you watch PoliceActivity often, you've seen several bullies who must take 30 shots or more, and keep attacking their victims. So this already puts an end to your question.

I suppose if some criminals wanted to rob a bank in San Fran, they could pay a couple "houseless" guys to stage a knifefight, who then just lay on the ground holding knives. The ENTIRE shift of Police Officers shows up. Distracted for however long the bank robbers had determined was necessary to do their thing. Then the "houseless" guys could decide to "give up the fighting". Then collect their share of the haul at the end of the day.
Having been a Police Officer myself for a decade, I'm thinking they could have handled this particular situation with perhaps half, or a third, as many Officers. And about a tenth as many shots. I mean, it looked like about 5 of the Officers were at point-blank range. I thought they were going to shoot each other.

Oddly, an officer could get in far more trouble by stating that he's going to shoot the knife hand, and then shooting the knife hand than he would from actually shooting to kill. Would be labeled assault and misuse of lethal force or some such thing.
