@@HaloFTW55 Exactly. In 2014, a joint-paper requesting reinstatement of the para task for 3 Div, to be shared between the R Westmr R and the L Edmn R - being the original reserve units holding the para task in the West. The proposal was to be very simple to achieve: award the task and allow for a slight increase in slots on the para crse. Over time, each unit would have reached a platoon's worth. No requirement to obsess over jump pay, refresher trg, eqpt etc - everything would be done as part of Para Coy 3 PPCLI. Anytime they wanted augmentation, trps could be flown in 1 day earlier and participate in a refresher (there's always refreshers). Edmontonians just drive in... The L Edmn R lost interest in pursuing the task and wound up with a mortar trg task. The Westies were told the expectation for them was to be able to provide a full platoon to augment a coy of 3 PPCLI (largest commitment of soldiers in 39 CBG). So.... why couldn't that have been the Para Coy they augmented? Either way, same commitment. In order to augment on an ex, soldiers would be flown to Edmonton first... Only difference? No 1 hr para refresher... oh well. The proposal went to 3 Div with the endorsement of Comd 39 CBG... and went... no where. The excuse always given by CA HQ was "we really don't know the future of parachuting in the CA and can't say were we'll be on that in a few years..." Well, it's 10 years later. Para coys still exist. The QOR still has their status (augmenting 3 RCR's Para Coy and CAAWC)... The Westies would have had far in excess of a platoon's worth of motivated jumpers itching to augment 3 PPCLI... Imagine the morale boost etc... 10 yrs and not a finger lifted to merely allow it to happen. Would have cost nothing and would have been a huge boost in morale. What a waste!
What happened to Queens Rifles? Are they not an Ontario based reserve unit focused on being para-capable? (I think they're the only reserve unit with a para capability. I don't think any reserve units out west are para capable, just individual members)
Well, as the original comment said, QOR isn't in 3 Div. The problem is that Western Canada just doesn't have as much regiments as the East does and since it's further out, usually gets everything much later or in less quantities due to being in the ass end of the supply chain. And yeah, only individual members are para qual'd out west.
@@HaloFTW55 Sorry man, my time in was before these "Divisions" - I thought QOR was in 3 Div Back in my day it was simply Land Force Western Area, with each province having its own Canadian Brigade Group (re here in Alberta it was 41 Canadian Brigade Group) And yeah it makes sense the western units kinda end up getting the new kit last, being the ass end of the supply chain. Also makes sense why we don't have a para qualified reserve unit - we don't have a CFB Trenton anywhere nearby to facilitate the training, and getting certified via civilian means won't cut it
This came at an incredibly great time.
QoR putting in that PR work & filling up the ranks w/ go-getters.
