Firework Show Setup (Part 1 - 4th of July 2023)

- It has begun! We are preparing for our 4th of July 2023 firework show! Come along as we take apart some NOABs, get our single shots ready to be racked and prepare our slice cakes! This year's show features way more single shots than last year due to their availability this year. I also invested in more single shot racks and slice racks to help speed up our setup time!
Part 2 will include e-matching and racking our single shots. Poking and labeling the cakes we have on hand before the large shipment. Racking our large bore (60-62mm) single shots.

Nice slice rack.... 7 ply plywood is cool. I have one like that too... works great.... I keep forgetting about using a clove hitch when connecting to the eport! Thanks for the reminder. Now I feel wasteful!! I take the pile of trimmed cannister shell fuse, put a long fuse in it and light it all up LOL Awesome job as always Joel!! loved seeing the NOAB tear down!! Haha I like your method of fuse disposal! I wouldn't say that is waste at all. Waste would be throwing it away and not doing anything with it lol. I received all the product yesterday, so we are rocking and rolling!

I swear you are my pyrobrother from another mother. I reuse everything. I save my fuse and put them in MJG bags & Talon bags. I use all the packing paper to wrap homemade cylinder shells and you should see me at Christmas gathering all the tissue paper I can hoard for my ball shell construction. It's an expensive hobbie and you've got to save money where you can. Stay safe!!!
Haha, I love all of that! Hey, if you have something that works, why waste it. I was in Malta recently and did a firework factory tour and one of the things that got me is that they make everything on the island. The wrap for their shells is from animal feed bags etc.

@@JoelRobinsonPyrotechnics so we actually didn't even buy it to hold fan slices we bought it just to hold small cakes and be able to throw it out in the yard real quick. But now we ended up using them for fans slices you know how that goes. 🤷

@11:24 be careful placing slices together like that. with 2" slices i've had neighboring slices entirely blow the tops off neighboring slices and tear the igniters out. now i use baffles in between to shield them from each other.

That slice rack definitely will need to pick one or two of those up. That is a neat invention haven’t seen it. Where did you get it from?
I picked those up at pyroboom.com - I was going to make them myself, but honestly it was well worth the $46 to buy them and not worry about the time to make them.

Very informative! It must be very time consuming to think about how you want to make the show. What type en effects to use at wich point in the show and then line them up in the correct order. How does that process go? Like before you order and prep the fireworks. Thanks for this video!
I started using a program called Finale 3D which makes this 10x easier! I did a live stream working on the show that you can see here. Even with 3D simulations, I constantly research timing and effects and adjust accordingly. It's also just a learning process. My first pyromusical was 6 years ago, and the show gets better each year!

Did you have any issue e matching the Howling brocades? I know they are a little different with that rocket engine. I was planning on e matching a case of them. Enjoying your setup vids
I used the same method of following the fuse into the lift charge. I haven't put the e-matches in yet, but I don't foresee any issues. I have done similar style howling cakes in the past (like Shogun's Jet Propulsion), so I'm hoping it goes off okay lol
Hi Joel... What's with the green/white double fusing in the NOABs? Isn't white the fastest? Have you tested a length of the double fuse for time?
All the NOABs I have looked at had a redundant fuse, and I am unsure why. It's about a second per inch of fuse from my testing

Dont know if you did this already but i want to do a $3k budget show for 2024. I don't think i would be this in depth of a set up because i just want to be able to simple fuse together good breaks, colors big bangs and patterns ( if that makes sense). Hope you can give me some help.

I recently purchased a I18 Ignite system. Are you able to the fire slices with clip on igniters?
It isn't ideal, but in theory you could. The Ignite system also supports MJG Firewire initiators, which is the better route for slicing cakes.
How do the 62mm single shots looked compared to a noab or is breaking down a noab for effects
Very comparable on the height and symmetrical breaks. I wanted that jellyfish effect and didn't want to buy a full case of 60mm shots when I had that NOAB. That's the only reason I decided to rip that down haha

Hello Joel - do you have to be licensed to purchase all that you are showing?
A license? No, some form of training, certification, proof of competency, yes. I did a video on buying proline in April from American Wholesale. They have a form right on their website you can fill out and you'll see some of the things they are looking for. The most common would be something like the PGI shooter course
is it safe enough to insert e matches into your items that early in advance?
If you can match everything onsite, the day of your show, that is the best solution! Simply put, I can't do all of my single shots on site, so I normally match my single shots in advance, but all cakes and mortar racks on-site.
Love these set-up videos... But the audio is lagging about 5 seconds behind the video and it makes it weird to watch.
Thanks for the heads up! CZcams is processing an edit on the video that appears to be messing with the audio after a few minutes in. Hopefully it processes and resolves itself soon!

I'm shocked you didn't add some sort of disclaimer about modifying product... some states would require you to maintain a "manufacturing" license to do this as modifying the cake now makes it impart of its original "EX: ###". Not saying everyone has a manufacturing license when modifying product, but I know how youtube is these days.
All valid points. It's a weird one because I find mixed information every time I try and find this out. Is it state by state or is it covered under personal use?

Looks familiar! lol Lots of work matching cakes the way you want them. I did the same with my 9 on a boards but just left them on the board and matched them individually for single shots. Same with the Super stunt and some other 500 gram cakes. Looks great so far Joel!
That is a great way to do it! Especially for some of the effects that NOABs have vs the availability of 60mm single shots.
