Sometimes you find yourself with a dead or broken key fob for your Harley. In this video we take a look at how to figure out what's wrong with the fob and also how to bypass it with a security code. Don't worry, we'll also take a look at how to figure out what the code is for this 2008 Electra Glide Ultra Classic as well as how to change it to your own. I hope this helps a fellow rider avoid being stranded on the side of the road and potentially save a pile of cash in service charges and towing fees.
Let me dovetail into this older discussion by mentioning a fix I just figured out on my 2009 Road King key fob that wasn't working. I inserted a new battery and it still failed. My backup fob failed as well. Measured the voltage on 3 different batteries and tried them all in my primary fob. The max voltage of all 3 of them was 2.5 volts on this 3v battery, should be plenty enough to trigger the alarm antennae especially when standing right on top of the bike. I finally took a guess that 'maybe' either the small metal tab beside the battery got flattened and was not making contact with the upper cover: 'or', the 4 small tabs on the upper cover on the 'H'-shaped component got flattened and weren't making contact with the battery. (You show both at 55 seconds on your video). I took a small eyeglass screwdriver and 'very carefully' bent the legs upwards and the tab upwards, fully snapped the cover back together and voila', fixed. *Note: 'None' of the other videos or instructions for fixing this issue mentioned this as a possible issue. They all talked about going through the override sequence to fix this. BTW: the backup fob just had a bad battery.
Thanks for posting that here also. I luckily didn't have that problem but being as how I wanted to ride and couldn't because of the fob I found the work around with the security code. I appreciate the effort help out other riders. Thanks for watching!
Sir, you saved me an expensive trip to my local Harley dealer. I'm thinking I had the same issue last year when I went to my local shop and was told I needed a new FOB. I purchased two, and one of them never worked. I just tried what you suggested and Walla. Thanks a million!

Man, thank you for saving me a lot of hassle. Real hero
Great tutorial straight to the point no bs no big im so and so. All other posts for anything on you tube should be like this! Great job and saved my day!
For a new Harley Davidson owner your the man. Thanks
Happy to have helped! Thanks for watching!
2012 street glide, I spent a whole week checking switches , fuses, wires. Had the same problem wood not start. Changed key fob battery, NO GO .Watched your clip and realized my battery was upside down. I am up and running...Thank you so much.
Glad to have helped! Thanks for watching!
Did the same thing
Stuck in the home depot parking lot. Bike is locked in security mode. Watched this video, went back in and replaced the battery and boom she fired up... Going to change the security code so that never happens again! Saved my life bro!! lol
Seriously happy to have helped! Ride safe!
I changed the FOB battery and bike battery on my 2010 Triglide. Would start then immediately die. I had the FOB battery in backwards! Your post was the first that mentioned that. I've been trying to start it for weeks. Thanks Dude!
It's always the little things isn't it? Lol. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
Noooooooooo!!! I’ve just spent the last two days faffing about with my spare fob trying to sync it and in and out of the house. Mine was exactly the same as this!!!! Turned the battery over and low and behold! Thank you so much for saving my pride and not going to the dealer!!
Glad to have helped! Thanks for watching!
This video just saved me from a very long walk. Thank you
Happy to have helped! Ride safe!
THANK YOU . I built a 09 street glide and I turned the ignition on and the lights would flicker bike wouldn't start . I watched your video followed your instructions and my bike fired up Thanks man you rock 😃👍
Awesome! Glad it got you on the road! Enjoy the wind bro and thanks for watching!
Just in case you don't think that this video is still relevant, I'll just say that you saved me time and money because I am evidently unable to determine what + Down means... Once I changed the position of the NEW battery that I installed in my fob, my Electra Glide Ultra Classic Magically came to life (after a complete teardown of the electrical system, removal of my LED underglow, and a 24-hour battery charge...NONE of which was necessary) THANK YOU FOR RESTORING MY SANITY.
Wow you went far with that. I'm certainly glad to have been a help in preventing your impending mental breakdown. Now get in that thing and go riding! Thanks for watching.
@My Legacy Garage you bet I will! I'm a 12 month out of the year rider. Barring snow, I'm out in it. And thanks to you, there's one mistake I won't be making again!
Thank you, I couldn't believe it. Previous owner put the wrong battery in the Fob. I remembered the direction of the battery when it came out and put the correct battery in the same way.
It still didn't start.
I checked to see if the positive was down on new battery, It was not. Turned it over and it started.
The original WRONG battery had the Positive & negative switched on the battery compared to the new battery. Unbelieve.
Checking the positive down fixed the problem.
Glad to have helped. Simple little things like that are easy to overlook and go way overboard trying to diagnose.
Duh that was my issue. Battery in backwards! Thanks man you helped me out a ton
Always the simple things. 🤣 Thanks for watching!
Had a similar problem. When I saw the part where the fob battery was in + side up. Checked my fob and found my battery was in + side up also. Turned the battery over and the Harley roared to life. Thanks for the video.
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching and ride safe!
I never knew about this. I'm saving this video in case I need it. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Me either until my fob wouldn't work. Thought I should share my discovery. Lol. Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I replaced my battery and bent that clip down over the battery. It is supposed to be bent out away from the battery to make contact with the top of the fob. Noticed it on your video. THANKS!!
Happy to have helped. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Thank you, the switcheing around of the battery worked perfectly
Happy to have helped! Ride safe!
Thanks for the video. Of course by default if you say something about your fob, the dealer will tell you replace the battery...
Unfortunately in my case it was not the battery as the battery was new and I proved it to the dealer that it is the receiver itself as the ENG light came on with 3 codes which 2 were related to the communication between the fob and the receiver and one code which the service manger had no clue!!!! ( btw, the service manager was googling all those codes...hahaha )
I asked him to email the manufacturer (HD) and get the answer. It really sucks an almost brand new bike a year after warranty expiry started the headaches...and that makes me wonder the HD quality & reliability?! I wait another week and if no reply from the local dealer I am gonna contact/email the manufacturer myself to find out about that code and fix it myself.
It's crazy these days how clueless some people are about their job isn't it? I hope they get it straight it for ya and you can get out and ride!
Hey, Thanks a Million, Man!
Your detailed information is just what I needed to get my bike running after I started having fob issues. I think I'm going to need to purchase a new security antenna. Thanks Again 👍🏾 *
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching!
You're Very Welcome 👍🏾 *
Thanks for the video worked like a charm for my new to me 2018 fat bob and on my FOB the plus side is down lol I discovered another problem though. I put new batteries in both FOBS and both didn’t work. I put old battery back in one of them and only works when it wants to! Ugh luckily I was able to change the code when it was working.
Glad it could help ya out. Hopefully you figure out what the root cause is. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Thank you very much! I have watched numerous videos & lots of attempts to start my 08 Custom 1200 but with no success. This video worked for me. Maybe it's because we have identical paint colors, same year bikes. Now I can resume riding with a hit & miss FOB while getting the FOB sorted out which has a fairly new battery 2 years old. Great video!
Man I'm glad ya got back back out in the wind!
Exactly my issue this morning. Two fobs out. Ordered two new 2032 batteries on Amazon. What I don't understand is you had one battery in correct in one fob but it still wouldn't start. That means a bad FOB over rules a Good Fob unless the battery in the right polarity FOB was bad and the wrong polarity FOB battery was good just in backwards. Make any sense?
Originally the one that was in correctly was dead and in need of replacement. Once I replaced it, it worked fine. The spare one was in backwards and that's why it didn't work when I tried to use it. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the information it works Flipping the battery
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching!
I've got a weird one for you. Recently picked up a 2012 FLHTK from an estate sale. Battery was dead as it hadn't been ridden for a couple years. I put a new battery in the bike and new CR2032s in the fobs and got it to start long enough to get it on the trailer to bring home for maintenance. Got it to the house and it wouldn't start and kept alternating the turn signals indicating the alarm warning. It seemed like maybe the new fob batteries were dead since it wasnt recognizing the fob, so i changed the batteries again. Still no luck. So i tried something that worked for a buddy on his Triumph. I pulled the seat off and set the fob directly on the antenna. Bingo! It starts then... and i can then put the fob in my pocket or anywhere close and it'll continue to start like it should.... but then if I leave it alone for a few hours or overnight, it goes back to not recognizing the fob and i have to do the whole seat removal and fob directly touching the antenna thing again... putting the fob on the seat or sticking it innthe side between the seat and frame isnt good enough. It actually has to touch directly to the antenna.... Ideas?
If it's both fobs, which it sounds like it is, I'd say it's probably a bad security module. Only thing I might check would be power and ground to the module to be sure it's not a power problem. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply. I called a dealer today and they had me try a few things too- no luck- looks like I'll be dropping it off in about a week when schedule allows.
Hi! That worked BUT the next morning it added a one on column 1 and we couldn’t get rid of it??? So couldn’t bypass. How do you backspace and enter?
I don't think you can? I think you have to delete the whole thing and start over. Hope you got it figured out!
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!
Thank you it was the right solution for me.
Happy to have helped. Thanks for watching!
Great advice. Thank you from the Isle of man .
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching from across the pond!
FYI Fob must be present to display and or change existing code.
Thanks for watching!
This is an issue because anyone that knows this sequence can get your code and input another code and jack your ride. This needs to be remedied.
Disregard as I believe you replied to another person and stated the FOB is needed in order to see the code. That helps to reduce theft.
Yeah unless you access it with the fob or know what it is you're out of luck. Some dealers put a generic code in though so it's a good idea to change it when you get a bike. Thanks for watching!
Great video man. Cheers
Hope it helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks.. I buy Harley from auctions.. Will help
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching!
Where is the security siren modual located on a 2012 street glide, or what causes the security key comes on when starting the bike. It starts but the red light stays on. Thanks Tim
Not a clue. I'd give it a Google or call a dealer and ask. A forum might be a good place to try too. I hope you figure it out. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this! I picked up a used 08 with security and got stranded because I forgot the fob and stopped for fuel!
Happy to have helped. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Thank you. Worked great
Happy to have helped. Ride safe!
Fucking killer straight forward dude im all in . Great tutorial saved my day!
Happy to have helped. Thanks for watching!
What years does this work for? I tried it several times on my '06 Ultra Classic and can not see a code show up.
Is it the button fob? If it is it won't work. I think they switched to this kind in 2007? Can't remember for sure. If it's the kind with a button google the procedure for the button fob equipped bikes. Hope this helps!
@@MyLegacyGarage Yes it's the button fob. Thanks for the info.
Pick up for key bob is not near the ignition switch.Try left side of seat - also 2014 below and above different set up - thanks
Thanks for the info and for watching!
What if you loss your key fob and the security siren goes off how do you stop it
I would assume putting the pin in would silence that as well. Can't say I've ever tried it though. Thanks for watching!
Will this work on a 2012 dyna fat bob ?
I don't remember what year they changed it but I'd give it a 50/50 shot. 🤣 Give it a shot and let us know!
My fob battery was dead. I replaced it. Good to go. But now I want to find the code. When I try your discovery method it takes me to the enter pin mode. 2016 Street Glide.I need the code discovery mode.
I believe they changed it on the newer ones. Google 2016 Harley security override discovery mode and scroll down to the cyclefish article. It explains on detail how to do it. Thanks for watching!
What about the key FOB after you change the numbers
Not sure I follow the question but I think you are asking if it will still work? Yes the fob will still work after changing the security code. Hope that helps!
Does a 2004 ultra work the same way?
I don't think so no. I believe those have the older style fob with the button on it. Whole different system. Thanks for watching!
not working on my 2009 street glide , not showing the pin so i tried to enter one and not working
Have you tried contacting the dealer where it was sold originally? They are typically the ones that set the code.
Example 1 you flip battery in the fob right?
Roger that. It was just in backwards. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Awesome 👍😎 appreciate the video, great explanation
Glad to have helped! I figured surely there was somebody out there that could use the information. Thanks for watching!
So when you try to see your code do you have to have the key fob near by or can you do that if you lost the fob?
You need to have the key fob to be able to see what the code is if you don't know it. If you know the code or can guess it because it's preset by a dealer then it will start without the fob. Hope that answered your question. Thanks for watching!
hi, I have a problem and maybe you can help me ... I have a 2008 street glide and the other day I changed the battery ... I removed the main fuse and then the battery. When I mounted the new battery and put the main fuse back on and I tried to start the bike, the alarm started instantly ... the fob was next to the motorcycle, I had to wait about 15 minutes for the alarm to stop by itself. what can I do?...best regards
Have you tried it since? May have just tripped the alarm mode because power was cut. That's the only reason I can come up with. Might be worth posting in a forum where somebody with more knowledge than me might be able to help? Hope ya get it figured out!
@@MyLegacyGarage yep... in this morning...the same problem...Monday morning I have appointment with HD dealer.
Thanks you
Happy to have helped. Thanks for watching!
What happened to the key fob that doesn’t work?
The one that didn't work just had the battery in it backwards. Thanks for watching!
I just lost my key fob in the freeway , I am trying to view my code but this isn’t quite working on my 2009 dyna glide Fatbob … any other suggestions people 😅
I got nothing. Not sure what to do about it. Wish I could help and sorry I can't. Good luck!
They send them to you like that so the battery doesn't get used up when you're not using the fob
Interesting. Didn't know that. Thanks!
i dont know the pin in my 2009 street glide i can get to the point to enter it but cant get to the point to see the one someone else put in it
Yeah if you don't know the code you're boned. Try to contact the dealer where it was sold originally and see if they can give you a few to try. Good luck!
The dealer is close down...whats next??
@@lorenzoyoung9500 I'd try going directly to the mothership and seeing if Harley themselves can help. It's possible the dealer never changed it and whatever the factory code was still is in there. Other than that I don't know of any other way to override it.
Yup. I changed mine the day I brought my bike home.
Surprising how many people, including me, that had no idea this was a thing. I discovered a lot of dealers set every bike they sell the same. 🙄 Thanks for watching!
Mein you are so helpful thanks a million
Glad to have helped. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
you should mention the year of the bike this key fob works with. prior to 2017, the battery goes in + side down. starting in 2017 the battery goes in + side up
Good info! Thanks for watching!
So the system will allow me to try and input a code but the other truck to find out what the code is is not working
If you don't already know the code you're outta luck. Sometimes they are programmed by the dealer so you could try asking them what it might be. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Will that same code work on my bike ?
Maybe. Depends what sorta fob. The actual digits will certainly be different though. Best of luck!
Can’t get mine to find the key and I changed both batteries. And I have an 07 so this doesn’t work🙄
It does work... sounds to me like you have a bigger problem. Good luck!
It actually did work! I just put in all 1s and it started. But know matter how many times i tried to pull up the menu to change it i couldn’t
What you is your bike?
It's a 2008 Electra glide ultra classic.
Not working on my 03 electra glide...
I'm really not sure what years it works on. That's 5 years older so might be the button style fobs which I think are different. Hope ya get it straightened out. Thanks for watching!
Would this work on a 2008 Fatbob?
I wouldn't see why not. Same year and all. I'm not sure model to model when they started using this system but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Thanks for watching!
Key fob batteries changed 3 times. 2015 Road Glide with 2670 miles The bike has been a PITA since last summer with random security sets and subsequent flashing for an exorbitant amount of time. NO DIAG CODES. The black box must be bad. Why no codes? No idea. Everything works, all lights, battery new etc. There are issue(s) with black box electronics on these bikes. The dealer came out the last time I took it in due to the fact that the bike went off on security flashing etc, would not start. Fuel pump good. NO solenoid and security alarm continues to pop up no longer interittently but hard on. 50 amp main fuse required to turn security off. Big mess. Security alarm stuck on permanently at this time.
Man that sucks! Sorry to hear you are having such trouble with your bike. They are meant to be enjoyed, not a headache. Hope ya get back out in the wind soon. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the knowledge bro! God bless you! Jesus saves! Ride safe 🙏
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Cool
Thanks for watching!
Nothing I do overrides the security. The on off, didn't show the key code. I've put 6 batteries in the FOB nothing seems to work
It may be a deeper problem then. Perhaps a receiver or emitter for the system? Best to get it checked out I'd say. Good luck!
@@MyLegacyGarage its going for a ride to service today
So im having a problem where if my key fob is not in range my bike drains its battery in a day.
if i leave the key fob on the bike it doesnt drain at all.
any ideas?
Not a clue honestly. Sounds to me like an issue with software perhaps. As if the security module is constantly searching for the fob like a cell phone trying to connect to weak wifi all day. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Thanks for watching!
How to remove lowjack
Somebody licensed to do so. 🤣
Thanks brother!!

good on ya mate cheers man!
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the support!
not being able to enter a new code with 0 makes me mad, i cant have the code that i can remember.
I don't know why they don't allow it. It's not like it a VIN or something where it could be confused. 🙄 Thanks for watching!
Dude....dude. my battery was in backwards 😐....thank you

Where you from???

why doesn't it work on Dyna 2007
My guess would be it's the older button style fob? Just a thought. Thanks for watching!
@@MyLegacyGarage yes with button
@@Amika81 this doesn't work for the older style. Sorry!
@@MyLegacyGarage it's a pity. I have a 105th anniversary Dyna 0156/2000.
why do you need a keychain? Does that mean I don't have an alarm?
@@Amika81 probably not. I'm not really familiar with that style fob. Give a dealer a call and ask them would be my suggestion.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I own a Harley that I had built from random parts I’d find. It ran good. Then one day I couldn’t get it to turn on.
I took it to a shop and the mechanic said two circuits (. ?, or computers , or relays ) failed and they needed to be replaced.
He said that the last part needed is a dealer only part and it requires the bikes registration. But since I had the bike built, I haven’t had it registered yet..
Do you have an idea of what the mechanic is talking about?
So yeah, I need a dealer part, or the bike won’t start and they require the bikes registration in order to sell it.
Lastly , he said my bikes alarm (or security system) reactivated itself too, so it won’t start because of that issue. THOUGH IM NOT 100% sure about this so I’m gonna ask him.
Is there anyway to bypass an 03 Harleys alarms and start the motor directly from the battery, to starter, to engine? I’m only asking, any advice will help me, thanks
@@g.marksman1769 It's weird that they would want the registration. I would guess that whatever computer they need to flash is VIN related. I suppose they ask for the registration to make sure that the bike is actually in your name and you didn't steal it and are just trying to figure out how to start it. I don't know of any way to bypass the security system on them other than put the code in.
Thanks for replying. Yeah I’m gonna stop by and ask. Makes sense now that you’ve explained it. Thnx bruh 👌🏼
Dude at 2:50 it appears you start that procedure while the lights are still flashing. I know you cut the video there but some people may think it works like that. If you don't wait until they stop you will not get the ability to enter the pin code.
That's true. Hopefully people will realize that. Thanks for the heads up!
So you have to wait until the flashers stop before hitting the turn-signals?
@@najeemuhammad6957 sure do. It won't enter the mode if you try to start the procedure while the flashers are on. Thanks for watching!
@@najeemuhammad6957 Correct.

All the more reason to change your code! Some dealers change them and give the code to you when you buy it, but not many. Thanks for watching!
You can only see and change the code if you have the fob.
