PONTOON vs ANGRY TEXAS PANHANDLE THUNDERSTORM!!!! Lake Meredith Texas

  • Texas Storms are no joke...they're even worse on the water!!!! We spent the weekend camping at Lake Meredith, our local lake, in the Texas Panhandle. We took our boats out on the water for a day of sun and relaxation. After a couple of hours we started to see rain in the distance to the West of us. We decided to start heading to the boat ramp about 4.5 miles to the east of “sandy beach”. We didn't get far at all when the rain started to get heavy. By the time we got halfway, a severe thunderstorm had began to move in our path to the boat ramp. The winds reached over 60mph and we received small hail which felt like needles piercing the skin each time it made contact. I could not see past the front of the pontoon. My son was on the pontoon with me and helped to guide us to the marina safely. Two of the boats with our group took damage and my younger son fell off one of the boats hurting his shoulder on the dock. Overall we all made it back safely to camp. Lake Life!!! It starts getting rough around 2:30

    Lake Meredith is our playground. We’ve been caught a few times in storms like this, before cell phones with weather apps. About 28 years ago, we were trying to get off the lake as a storm blew in. It’s raining, hailing, the wind is crazy and as we’re headed to the ramp, like everyone else, my husband tells me I have to be the one to go get the trailer and back it in. I had NEVER done that. I panicked and told him, “I can’t!” he said, “you HAVE to babe. You HAVE to. You can do it” I was terrified. I ran up the hill, got in the truck, followed everyone else to the line to proceed down the ramp. I had watched my husband do this many times. I was relying on that to help me but I was shaking and freaking out. As I got closer to being the next in line and drive up the ramp to start backing in, I lost all confidence and looked over at the guy about to back in and I said “ I can’t do this” ( somehow hoping he would offer to do it for me. Dumb, I know) he said “Yes you can. Just take it slow and easy. Don’t worry about everyone else. Just slow and easy”. Then I switched to being mad at myself for being such a wimp and determined to getting my husband off that water. I did it. I’ve been backing the trailer in ever since. I’m so good at it now that I often get verbal compliments . I even had a marriage proposal once from a guy after he saw me back in. 😂

      That’s funny…yeah meredith is unpredictable. The boat ramp was stressful once the water levels dropped and it went down to one lane. Hopefully all this rain will make it easier to load and unload. Thanks for watching Laura!

      I have been at the mercy of more than one of these squalls. I have never done it in a pontoon boat. I was going to say that would top the list of least favorite. I thought long and hard about the last 7:00 minutes or so of the video.😂😂 Watching the sun shade torn and what seemed to be endless amounts of water soak you and every part of that boat. The pontoon boat doesn't hold that water in. It rids itself of the rain water quite nicely. This leaves you to stay out of the trough, increasing you getting to safety. A mid-size open bow can't bail itself and could make it no fun. The picture just a short time after the storm is typical Texas weather. Simply put, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.😂😂

    I grew up skiing and scuba diving and sailing on Meredith. We once were heading from Blue West back to the Marina, full boat, 5 divers, lots of scuba gear. A big storm blew in suddenly and we didnt know if we were going to make it back. One of out divers was a NAVY SEAL, and hard hat rig diver. He said it was the scariest ride of his life. That was about 1973. I have kept a sailboat at Meredith for over 20 years and been in some scary storms there.

    Got caught in a storm like this once but with golf ball sized hail. Luckily we thought Quickly and emptied the cooler and put it over our heads. I had a 16ft boat with a 75hp motor, when the swells got big that little motor would barely push the boat. The next week I traded it in on a 21 ft Boston Whaler with a 115hp Yamaha. Been maybe a dozen storms i shouldve let fly by before the trip back. But the idea i could act now and avoid the storm bit me in the butt. My boats are bass or performance rigs, they dont shed water off the floor like a pontoon. After having 6" of water in the floor sloshing back and forth and floating tackle boxes in the boat and a mile from any dry land i finally gave up on taking risks.

    I was caught in a violent storm while sailing in a 20' boat with my sister and my friend on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin back in the very early 1970s. Caught us totally by surprise, and I slid off the bow of the boat trying to put the jib back up. It's quite a long story, so I won't go into the details, except that, I had taken the jib down, and then we decided I should put the jib back up so we could sail with the jib only. I ended up being rescued by the Water Safety Patrol of Lake Geneva. There's so much more to the story, but I'll leave it at that. 🙂 We did hear later that the wind was gusting up to 60 mph.

    • @jmontoya1677
      @jmontoya1677  Před rokem +2

      Because the storm came from the opposite direction. The water was not rough. By the time we were half way it built up from the other side. To sit it out meant the possibility of getting hit by moving boats who also got stuck in the storm. There was a boat that sank that day and there was a boat a family of four fell out of. We made it back safe and sound so I felt we made the right choice for us. As for the Bimini it had just started to rain when we left. My wife and younger son were with us so I left the top up to keep her out of the rain. When the storm shifted and became severe my wife and son switched into my dads boat which was twice as fast as the pontoon and got them to the marina. The storm hit immediately and the Bimini top was the furthest thing from my mind. Getting my other son back to the boat dock safely was my main objective at that point.
