I love my 50mm f1.8…. Whenever I need a wider angle I just take 3-4 shots and stitch them together! Yes it works handheld as long as your shutter speed is fast enough.
When I go out with my 50 STM I know certain sure that I will end up with a gem. Maybe just one; maybe several but on most every occasion, I end up with something that, I just think “wow!”. It can turn the most mundane subject into something of real beauty. An overgrown gate post and apple blossoms. Wow! A patch of daffodils by the roadside. Wow! Sublime images.
I (NEWBIE) took my 50mm canon STM out today and forced myself to try anything and everything with the lens to see what the difference s were in JPG only. Going to take a look on my desktop to compare. Definitely got the nack of focus on close with blurred background and focusing on background and blurring the foreground. It was a game changer for me. Thanks
I'm new at photography and a 50mm for my Canon was my first purchase. Good to know it was a decent choice! I would like to spend more time learning the exposure triangle and less time worrying about my lens for now. Seems this lens will let me do that.
Thanks for the well produced video. A 50mm f1.8 is the usual first choice, especially on a budget and decades ago it was the lens that you got on a body to begin with. I’d recommend going up just that little bit extra and buying the f1.4, just that half stop (and the fact that these are better in quality, having more elements) will produce better out of focus blur (known as bokeh) and will push you to play more at closer distances in those natural surroundings. There’s more to a forest than trees 😂
Thanks Joshua, love the minimizing distractions by only using one prime lens! For the fallen redwood, that's actually called a nurse log. Seeds fall on it, take root and new trees grow out of it, using its nutrients as soil. Eventually, the nurse log will rot away, leaving the new trees looking like they're standing on their roots with a hollow underneath. They're amazing and wonderful (especially to photograph)!
LOL; that script was written by me 😇 . Trouble is I don't always follow it . Way back in film days my most used lens was a 50 F1.4 (preferable on the fully manual Fm2 Nikon) too much gear = confusion = frustration = lose of interest. Doesn't matter how much gear I carry , I can never get every photo I see ---- if I could get every photo, what would I do with them . No matter how much gear I carry I never seem to have the perfect focal length. Great advice in first video of yours I have seen . Loved the photos (and processing) you found in that beautiful light ---- not too much of that here in outback Australia .
My first "real camera" was a Minolta X-700 35mm film camera that came with a 50mm F1.8. That was generally the first lens anyone starting out got. My first digital camera was a Canon Rebel that I didn't realize was an aps-c "crop sensor" camera so when I got an adaptor to use the old Minolta lens on it, then the canon nifty 50, I couldn't figure out why I had to step back so much farther than with the old Minolta. (50mm on a crop sensor of that type makes it more like a 75mm). I'm now using a more modern Sony A7R3 and have more modern lenses on it but still enjoy adapting the Minolta 50mm f1.8 and an even older Nikkor 50mm F2.0 to it to see what I can accomplish with them.
I am trying to get into woodland photography but struggle to find engaging compositions with the chaotic nature of woodland. Coincidentally, lately I have been restricting myself to a 25mm f/0.95 prime MFT (50mm EFL) and have been trying to use the short DoF to isolate subjects. More practice needed I think. You offer some good advice which I will certainly take on board. I was especially struck with the looking for 'pools of light' tip. Very useful on overcast days. Also, using the prime to log future compositions with different focal lengths. I'm lucky to live in a place where mist and fog are not uncommon if you don't mind shooting in the rain. You have encouraged me greatly. Many thanks. I have subscribed and liked.
Very true what you say and recommend! Regularly I also go out only with one lens to concentrate on those motifs which match it's angel of view. Sometimes it's the Nifty Fifty (Canon RF 50/1.8), or the RF 35/1.8 Macro, or the RF 85/2.0 Macro. Very often I return home with more keepers compared to excursions when I bring all my gear with me, from the ultra-wide angle to the telephoto. Sure, all those lenses give me all possible shooting opportunities, but at the same time they absorb too much time thinking about the right lens instead of concentrating of really worthwhile motifs. Henri Cartier-Bresson shot most of his iconic masterpieces with one lens: The Leica Summicron f/2.0.
It's a nice lens but on a crop sensor body it's giving you a 75mm equivalent focal length. If you want a true 50mm on a crop sensor then you need something around the 35mm range.
The color, look, feel, mood of the images at 5:50 is one I have tried so hard to do. I love images that have that look and feel to it for colors and blacks... not sure if I am wrong in camera or the lack of Lr edit skills. Great image.
@@TheJoshuaPeg please do, that darker moody look in landscape stuff is something i have been trying to figure out. i am trying to avoid presets (i do have yours) as much as I can, but I also know the limits to my skill/knowledge too. Any help is greatly appreciated.
While using one lens like a 50mm might work well in some locations like the Woodlands , if you're looking to photograph a large subject like an old barn or a grist mill a 50mm will most likely not be wide enough to capture the entire scene, recently i purchased a Nikon Z6Ii, i paired it with a Viltrox 28 mm prime lense. The first subject I photographed was a local mill, I like to photograph this location in the fall and this was the third time I have been to this location. Each fall i went was at a different time of day and this time I went early during an overcast day, the lighting was much more even and the 28mm proved to be the perfect focal length for capturing the scene. So while a 50 mm prime is the most recommended first prime to buy, the most important thing to remember when choosing a lens is to think about the subject and and your style of photography, then match the lens to it

Thank you, Joshua, for all your informative videos. I have only just bought a 50 mm lens and am still experimenting with it. However, living in Mid Wales I am very fortunate to always have plenty of amazing views and beautiful early morning mist to capture.
You have definitely got me thinking. I started taking photos at age 7, back in the 1960s. By age 9, I was running around with a light meter and an old compact 828 Bellows camera that was made in the 1930s. It was made by Kodak, and had a Carl Zeiss lens on it. I still have that camera. Pristine condition. One focal length, and, of course, all manual settings. I thought very long and hard about each photo I created. Technology has really spoiled us. I am a big believer that limitations breed creativity. You have got me seriously thinking about placing more limitations on what I do with photography, in an effort to replicate the experience that I once had taking photographs, which, with all those limitations, was the most wonderful experience. Hi Joshua Based on previous comments and shots of you with your camera on the film I would say that you are shooting at 80mm. Your camera looks like a crop sensor model and as such you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6. I have found the 50mm to be a really punchy lens at 80mm with fantastic fall-off both in the foreground and the background, in fact I prefer its 'look' at 80mm.
I find it still sad that canon did never go for a 35mm lens in the same price range also f1.8 as the famous 50mm. This would make so much sense to bundle with crop sensor dslrs. So amateurs get the true 50mm experience without going into spending thousands to get that full format sensor first. At that point you likely want to replace that black 50mm by a more expensive one. Missed opportunity from my POV. I do now hobbyist level photography for 20+ years and nobody ever came up with that for something around that pricepoint as far as im aware. Still being on a crop format DSLR is still enjoy the 50mm even thought it's 80mm. I can just imagine what a beautiful experience it must be to have actual effective 50mm F1.8 at hand
Both I and my dad have the 50mm f/1.8, I for my 250d and he for his 2000d. Love the sharpness, love the amount of light it lets in, love the creamy bokeh... But find it to be terribly desaturated compared to other lenses. Is this an issue you've found or could it be something we're doing (or not doing)?
It could be that your pictures have less contrast with this lens. Use a little more contrast when you edit your photos, and they'll likely look less "washed out" 😁

focusing on zoom lens was confusing me and i like a lot of the 50 prime photos and its all about getting created and then later i can think about a 70-200mm.

Am a newcomer both to your channel and looking into starting photography by getting an actual camera in the near future (saying goodbye to my trusty old iPhone X..). I couldn't help but asking why you prefer a DSLR over mirrorless, when woodland photography usually requires a lot of hiking and often makes the heavier DSLRs less nice to carry around.
i love how you use the nifty fifty, i was on the fence but now im def buying one, instead of starting with 24-70 so expensive. i also have to say towards the end when you took a pic of yourself looking up the redwood, i didnt realize until the pic was taking how big, the editing was great. i mean i saw how big the tree but after editing it really stood out.
Am I crazy for bringing the Fuji GFX + Sigma 105mm f/1.4 for exactly these shots :-)? But yeah, Canon APS-C camera, specifically the mighty old EOS 300D, and 50mm f/1.8 was my first digital camera-lens combo and I grew on it. Nice shots in the video and spot on processing.
I do this a lot Joshua, 70€ second hand Nikon af-s 1.8 50 mm has produced some of my best woodland shots. Great video as always. And yes catching the fog is a challenge.

Have to admit the nifty fifty doesn’t leave the bag at all, but I know it should and this video is exactly why, just switched up my gear by going mirrorless, time to up my game to justify the expense.
We are considering buying 50mm Sony OSS lenses for our A6000's. For years we have just used the kit lens. Do you reckon this is the right thing to do? We do a lot of landscapes but occasionally enjoy a bit of street photography too.
@TheJoshuaPeg First let me say that I very much enjoy your channel, showing that you can get great shots with an entry level camera and the right approach. I have a Nikon D5600 and am amazed by its capabilities. I do wonder about the 50 mm recommendation. While a 50 mm f/1.8 is the default lens on my 35 mm cameras, the equivalent on crop sensor is about 35 mm - which I also have for the D5600. I wonder if is is because "nifty 50" rolls off the tongue, but "nifty 35" doesn't have quite the same ring to it? 🤨
Another great video Joshua, short but straight to the point. I too love using prime lenses. I admit it took me a while get used to it but it did improve my photography . Also, challenging myself only taking one lens out with me whether it’s a prime or my 55-230mm just mixes things up and keeps things interesting. I wish i found more videos like this when I first took photography more seriously all those years back 👍
I bought the 50mm 1.8 STM as my first lens (after the included kit lens), but with a full-frame equivalent focal length of 80mm I've found it to be too tight for general use on my crop body (though I love it on my 5D3). Ironically my 55-250mm lens is one of my favourites to use. Have you tried a wider prime that's closer to 50mm equivalent on a crop body like a 28mm or 35mm?
@@TheJoshuaPeg you're probably right. I ended up getting the Sigma 18-35 1.8 which I can highly recommend. It's like prime performance in a zoom lens, and covers your standard 28, 35, and 50mm equivalents, so it's like 3 primes in one lens
I had the same experience. 50mm on a crop sensor is getting more into portrait lens territory. I had the Canon 200D, and ended up with Canon’s 24mm f/2.8 - somewhere around 38mm FF equivalent. Nice combo, and the lens is small.
@@danieli.9252 I felt similar with the 50mm, although using it as a scouting lens is a nifty idea still. Like you, I gravitated to the 24mm f/2.8, and I liked it so much that I added the 40mm f/2.8, which is very underrated as a crop sensor tool in my opinion. I'm happy to leave either on my SL3 at any time so that I can whip it out quickly and carry a light setup. And they're the exact same size, so I can keep the other one in a jacket pocket if I'm on a walk or something. I would prefer something a little bit wider, like 35mm, but the benefit of that pancake profile is worth it. It's just enough to pull off a nice portrait without totally crowding your subject, especially if you're including some nice background. My only warning is to make sure you get a white one if you already own the 24mm. I carry them together, and it would drive me nuts to have to read the side of the lens to tell them apart, especially when they're mounted on the camera.
Cool to see! Almost similar gear that I'm using. :) I currently still own a Canon EOS 200D with a Canon 18-135mm and Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM. I also had the Canon 10-18mm and the 55-250mm for quite some time, but I already sold those. I now use the Tamron 10-24mm and the Tamron 100-400mm instead. :)
Ye with Canon it’s equivalent to 85mm on full frame. Lots of reach though! Used to film all my videos on my iPhone 12. Use a mirrorless camera these days

I used a 50mm last night for my first astrophotography session. it’s very versatile
When i go out with just primes, always take the 50mm and the 24mm pancake lens, nice video.
We recently visited London. I only took two lenses (28mm and 50mm), and mostly made good use of the former.

This is a Canon which uses a 1.6x crop, so it’s actually closer to ~85mm FF equivalent. I love it 😁
I had to buy an adapter for my M50. Haven't had a chance to really use this lens. Hope it works well with the adapter?

I have a plastic fantastic 50mm and a Canon 80D but have never used the lens.

i love how you use the nifty fifty, i was on the fence but now im def buying one, instead of starting with 24-70 so expensive. i also have to say towards the end when you took a pic of yourself looking up the redwood, i didnt realize until the pic was taking how big, the editing was great. i mean i saw how big the tree but after editing it really stood out.
I had it - But very lightly used. Traded in via MPB for more lenses :)

But yeah, Canon APS-C camera, specifically the mighty old EOS 300D, and 50mm f/1.8 was my first digital camera-lens combo and I grew on it.

I do this a lot Joshua, 70€ second hand Nikon af-s 1.8 50 mm has produced some of my best woodland shots. Great video as always. And yes catching the fog is a challenge.

I like my EF 100mm f2.8 paired via adapter to my Canon R100 for flower photography
In 20 years of photography I never used the 50mn focal length for the type of shooting I do, landscape and portraits.

We are considering buying 50mm Sony OSS lenses for our A6000's. For years we have just used the kit lens. Do you reckon this is the right thing to do? We do a lot of landscapes but occasionally enjoy a bit of street photography too.

@TheJoshuaPeg First let me say that I very much enjoy your channel, showing that you can get great shots with an entry level camera and the right approach. I have a Nikon D5600 and am amazed by its capabilities.
I do wonder about the 50 mm recommendation. While a 50 mm f/1.8 is the default lens on my 35 mm cameras, the equivalent on crop sensor is about 35 mm - which I also have for the D5600. I wonder if is is because "nifty 50" rolls off the tongue, but "nifty 35" doesn't have quite the same ring to it? 🤨

Another great video Joshua, short but straight to the point. I too love using prime lenses. I admit it took me a while get used to it but it did improve my photography . Also, challenging myself only taking one lens out with me whether it’s a prime or my 55-230mm just mixes things up and keeps things interesting. I wish i found more videos like this when I first took photography more seriously all those years back 👍

I bought the 50mm 1.8 STM as my first lens (after the included kit lens), but with a full-frame equivalent focal length of 80mm I've found it to be too tight for general use on my crop body (though I love it on my 5D3). Ironically my 55-250mm lens is one of my favourites to use.
Have you tried a wider prime that's closer to 50mm equivalent on a crop body like a 28mm or 35mm?
I’m considering a 35mm, although I do own a full frame camera with a 50mm so it might be a bit of a waste for me 😅
@@TheJoshuaPeg you're probably right. I ended up getting the Sigma 18-35 1.8 which I can highly recommend. It's like prime performance in a zoom lens, and covers your standard 28, 35, and 50mm equivalents, so it's like 3 primes in one lens
I had the same experience. 50mm on a crop sensor is getting more into portrait lens territory. I had the Canon 200D, and ended up with Canon’s 24mm f/2.8 - somewhere around 38mm FF equivalent. Nice combo, and the lens is small.
@@danieli.9252 I felt similar with the 50mm, although using it as a scouting lens is a nifty idea still. Like you, I gravitated to the 24mm f/2.8, and I liked it so much that I added the 40mm f/2.8, which is very underrated as a crop sensor tool in my opinion. I'm happy to leave either on my SL3 at any time so that I can whip it out quickly and carry a light setup. And they're the exact same size, so I can keep the other one in a jacket pocket if I'm on a walk or something. I would prefer something a little bit wider, like 35mm, but the benefit of that pancake profile is worth it. It's just enough to pull off a nice portrait without totally crowding your subject, especially if you're including some nice background.
My only warning is to make sure you get a white one if you already own the 24mm. I carry them together, and it would drive me nuts to have to read the side of the lens to tell them apart, especially when they're mounted on the camera.

I currently still own a Canon EOS 200D with a Canon 18-135mm and Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM.
I also had the Canon 10-18mm and the 55-250mm for quite some time, but I already sold those.
I now use the Tamron 10-24mm and the Tamron 100-400mm instead. :)

I love my 50mm f/1.8 lens but on a cropped sensor it is pretty ...cropped. Btw do you record yourself with a go pro or a phone?
It is very tight, I agree, on my 250D. On my full frame 5d2, it almost feels like wide angle! Very sharp lens at 5.6.
Ye with Canon it’s equivalent to 85mm on full frame. Lots of reach though!
