three lost verses have come to light from love letter by Cohen, recently sold at auction... They have a very different more uplifting tone, but still with a dark edge..kind of obessive actually...which I can imagine is why he never published them.... I managed to memorize one of them....can't remember the other two except basically what they were about and maybe the last line... here is the one I remember....Ready?

@@morgannmr7 Unfortunately you wont find anything about them, the letter was sold at auction to a private buyer, I never knew who bought it. I should not have said they have "come to light" becaues who ever bought the letter has never made it public. I might actually get in trouble for this. The rumor was, it was purchased by the grandson of a woman who had been dating Cohen around the time he was writing an early version of the song, and part of the rumor was that the Cohen Family Foundation asked them not to publicize it and they agreed. The other two verses were similar in tone. The last line of one I remember being something like how "her smile sang to me hallelujah", and the other, all I rememeber is that it was about realizing the hallelujah he heard was just an illusion..something about being more than just a word, but something he never really heard...i wish I could remember...I have been trying really hard to remember the other verses but its just not coming back to me. Maybe one day who ever bought that letter will finally let it see the light of day...

Sometimes the "I did my best" verse is put last -- that makes sense, as well. (Or put it first and last, ala O Fortuna in Carmina Burana.)

I heard the original had dozens of verses but I cant find a version of it anywhere, I just want the lyrics Cohen wrote for all the verses....I wish I could find it.
@Queen Concquer ah, yeah I was doing some research and I realize now that most of those verse were just variations on the same verses...he just rewrote them a bunch of times, but I did hear he originally released a 15 verse version of this song but I cannot find that anywhere.

This is the softest yet most powerful and moving version I've ever heard. People don't need to belt out this song to make a tidal wave of impact. Beautiful cover done right; a masterpiece from a master artist. This is how it's done💌
It's been beaten to death by every artist from American idol to every singer at Christmas. I love Jeff Becks version. But I love this one too. Your right, it doesn't have to be belted out loud to make a impact with it.

But the last time it was actually "pulled off", I'd argue, was Shrek. At this point, it's almost making the whole damn _song_ feel like just another preachy little cliché...

Thank You so much for singing the whole song, I have no idea why people don't want to hear more! Leonard Cohen was a great writer, and he did eighty verses, and we only use seven or so, what a treasure to have seventy three more Cohen verses on tap! Let's sing them!

Thank you for doing all verses. Beautiful version, with fantastic guitar work by all. In all honesty, while I appreciate your own interpretation, I do wish you had done Cohen's final verse last, rather than opening with it. To me, the verse always provided a summation, rather than an introduction, and put the conflict in the rest of the verses in context and harmony at the same time. Just a different interpretation, I guess. Thank you for including the two verses often left out, however.

Shaun Hopper is an amazing artist, and appears to be as nice a guy as he is talented. My wife got me Taj Mahal tickets for my birthday this year. As we were waiting for the doors to be opened, the gentleman selling CDs of the opening act asked us, "Have you guys seen Shaun Hopper before?" We said we hadn't, and he told us, prophetically, "You're in for a real treat." My God! He couldn't have been more right.

I've never heard it with all the verses. Cohen wrote a lot but never sang them all at the same time. But I think it has all the verses I've heard before. There are some variations within some verses. The broke your CROWN, and she broke your FAITH, instead of THRONE. Taking the name in vain verse is sung by Bob Dylan, Gord Downie, and Willie Nelson among others. I love the verse too. But people who do those verses tend to leave out the marble arch and Holy Dove parts, which are also favorites of mine.
