- Tips for Growing Japanese Maples in High Heat Areas:
1. Choose Heat-Tolerant Varieties: Opt for varieties known for their heat tolerance, such as Seiryu, Sango Kaku, Inaba Shidare, Ryusen, and *Mikawa. Emperor I is a good red upright choice for high heat.
2. Understand Zones: Japanese maples typically grow well in zones 5 through 9, but the effectiveness of these zones depends on heat and humidity. Zones are based on cold tolerance, so consider heat indexes and local climate variations.
3. Sun and Shade: In high heat areas, Japanese maples often prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Full sun is suitable in cooler zones but can be stressful in hotter regions.
4. Watering and Drainage: Proper watering is crucial. Too much or too little can stress the tree. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, and adjust watering frequency based on weather conditions. In containers, frequent watering may be necessary, and the container should be shaded to avoid overheating.
5. Fertilization: Use balanced fertilization to avoid overstressing the tree. Excessive fertilization can hinder water and nutrient uptake, especially in high heat.
6. Protecting Roots: Mulch helps keep roots cool and improve soil health, but avoid burying the root ball or using heavy mulch that can cause heat retention. Ground cover plants like sedums or Creeping Jenny can also help insulate and protect roots.
7. Avoid Reflective Heat: Be cautious of placing Japanese maples near reflective surfaces like dark stones or buildings that can intensify heat.
8. Microclimates* Pay attention to microclimates within your garden. Southwest exposures are the hottest; ensure that Japanese maples are placed where they won't be subjected to excessive residual heat.
By following these guidelines, you can successfully grow Japanese maples even in challenging high heat conditions.

Live in zone 9 high heat area Auburn CA. Use patio umbrellas to shade maples from scorching sun. Remove them when not needed.
Zone 10a sw florida....full shade and 3x weekly watering in a terracotta pot seem to be working well. New growth and healthy foliage are all I can ask for in this experiment.
Question, I’m just now trying to grow a Southern sugar maple sapling in SE Florida zone 10b. By full shade, how many hours of direct sunlight does that mean? Do you let the soil dry out before watering again?
What do you think are my chances of success growing this tree where I live?
Thanks a ton of info since I’m in a hi heat location. I was going to asked about the rocks around the pots and now I know. Thanks
I’ve been growing maples for several years and still I learned some good stuff, thanks and keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Great video, but it is so hard to catch exactly which JM's you recommend as you both talk too quickly with names you are comfortable with but others may not yet be.... It would be so useful if you had either a caption on the screen as you mention each tree or else include a list under your "Show More" header underneath, just above the comments. Thanks.
I think they mentioned Seiryu, Emperor 1, Sango Kaku, and Mikawa Yatsubusa. I might have missed some as I watched the first half way earlier.
@@piplup0089 Thanks for the info!
He also mentioned Inaba Shidare
Ryusen as well
Good info Gents. Thank you. I’m in coastal So Cal, Zone 10B. The morning sun and shade in the late afternoon is key. The new leaves from a growth flush get toasted in the late afternoon sun. It’s going to be in the low 80’s today and tomorrow. From the mid 60’s last week.
I try to watch everything in effort to learn something. Thanks, Fellas!!
Our pleasure!
Oh man so much great info in this one definitely one I'm fully going to commit to memory!! Thanks so much guys for putting out these awesome videos they answer a ton of questions for me that I struggle with! Can't wait for the next one 👍
Thank you so much guys. Excellent information. I Dig Mr maple 🍁
Another great video on Japanese Maples, thanks,Mr.Maple Podcast!
Always good info.
I dig mr maple!!!
There’s some excellent advice to be had from this video. All of my Japanese Maples are in terracotta pots ranging from 10ltr to 450ltr volumes. Each pot has good drainage and decent compost blends to help the Acer settle-in and develop. I make sure that the compost feels damp and moist like a fruit cake. If the sunshine and heat is fierce. As it has been recently in the UK, I keep an eye on both how hot the clay pot feels and likewise how moist the compost feels to the touch. We have had two periods of extreme heat recently and it was a concern. Many have experienced leaf scotch but the Acers will get through this and hopefully next year the Summer period temperatures and heat will be “average “.
Happy to see someone from UK replied to this. I’m fairly new ot Acers and i bought one last summer and the poor guy got aphids and then leaf scorch. It survived and is now starting to bloom. Moving forward, shall I just keep it indoor?
@@tangofoxtrot40 I’d keep it outdoors as long as no frost. There are some anti aphid sprays on the market so look at those and see if it’s ok to use on JMs. I lost one JM to frost this Winter. But it’s sibling is now coming into bud and the colours are like jewels already!
Great info, thanks so much! I DIG MRMAPLE, MRMAPLE PODCAST.
Great tips! Thank you! (Memphis area)
Very useful. Thank you
Zone 10B California here. I can't grow some variety in open sun. I planted in locations that hide away from sun around 2:30 PM to sunset, and they are doing just fine at least up till now. During the summer some types of shading iterms/techniques are needed I guess.
Just an fyi, I am in zone 10 in Southern California. They do very well here, but NEVER wet the leaves when watering. I’ve done six different varieties all did very well here.
Wait, why can't you wet the leaves? I'm in LA and the freak thunderstorm last week (Wed- 6/22/21) hit my potted japanese maple tree. By sunday (6/26) I noticed so many of the young leaves curled, turned crispy, and brown. It was only the small leaves. Was it because the leaves got wet? I've been trying to figure out if it was caused by overwatering due to the rain, if its underwatered, or if the hot winds from the thunderstorm hurt the tree. Its really windy where I'm at, but Ive had the tree for 3 months now and this is the first time its happened. It is also shaded in the afternoon. Only gets the morning sun, so I think it might be the overwatering + wet leaves?
@@Gladysaur1 yeh it was probably the rain. I just planted a new maple about five months ago, it’s doing very well but I built a shade for it because it’s very hot and dry. It gets a few hours of sun in the early afternoon seems to love that. Water it from the bottom leaves never get wet and it still has a beautiful canopy. Keep watering your little twig and next year it will recover. Hopefully when you get rain again you will have good cloud cover and your maple won’t burn. Good luck.
Thank You! Gentleman... New subscriber for life here...
Love a good maple and do struggle with my hot climate!! The sun burns the leaves to crumbling messes.
I live in a mountain area of SE Australia. Whilst the heat is not as high as other parts of Australia, the UV of extreme for most summers days combined with low humidity makes it difficult to keep maples even though my are is equivalent zone 8. Hit summer winds are the real threat and can easily burn the leaves of a maple in a few hours.
Mine are in pots so I can move them around the garden to either get sun or shade depending on time of year.
Mr Maple Podcasts 😊
I DIG MR MAPLE!
Great info! Much needed iinfo for southwest TN zone 7b. #japanesemaples Heat indexes have hit 110 plus this summer so far 🔥🥵
I DIG MRMAPLE PODCASTS
I dig Mr. Maple!
Love you videos!
I’m in 8B. I put it mistakenly in Sun. I had to move it to morning sun and share afternoon. This will be my first year in shade. It was georgous red purple leaves. Its hot here. Its humid but cant take the sun.
God bless!!!!!!! Have a great day!!!!!!! # Japanese maples!!!!!!!!
Thank you
I think I've got 47 different varieties most from MrMaple on the eastside of Ok City. Get's pretty hot here. I guess will find out. lol Just enjoying the ride. Still diggen!!!!
Great video
This video is very timely for me. I want to grow a Japanese maple in South Florida so I have a lot to consider. I'm such a nube with all the different varieties. I wish you would list the heat tolerant ones in the description or flash them up on the video because some I tried to spell based on what you were saying but am coming up with no results in the search. Some in the beginning you mentioned was sangu kaku, inaba shidare, and then something else I couldn't make out..saru?
That was good news. (I live in California)
Was about to double pot tatoo into a larger container and top with time black stone, looks like much will be much safer.

If I plant some creeping Jenny around my potted Japanese maple, is it the same concern as mulch where I need to make sure it doesn’t grow up against the base of the tree?
I am about to purchase the orange flame and fire glow down here in Texas. Do you recommend any of these or others for Texas weather 90deg plus in summer ?
Oh yea I bought one last spring and I over watered it and it died ,I though it was burnt by the Sun ☀️.
What japanese maples can grow in south texas around the mcallen area?
Maple work zones 5-9. I saw several in San Antonio. Check out our serried on Heat Tolerant maples
Zone 8 in far west Texas, can we grow a coral bark maple tree here and use a greenshade to filter the sunlight a little ?
Thank you for your video. Do you recommend any maples in zone 10a in California north of Los Angeles?
Are UV indexes indicative of time of day where the heat may be too high? In my area of SoCal it can reach 10 by 1pm some parts of the year.
I live in zone 9 rural Florida. So it gets a little colder than in urban areas. Summers extremely hot. I have florida red maples growing naturally. What kind of chill hours or cold do these trees need? It does get cold here on and off for short periods. Id like to grow some bonsai. Will putting in a refrigerator work to simulate winter dormancy?
They will do fine in zone 9 Florida but need some shade for sure. I’ve heard of people doing that in Hawaii but I think you wind be ok
@@MrMapleShow 10-4 Thank you! It was freezing out last night 44 degrees! Lol.
Was treating it as a bonsai or mame bonsai size semi indoor in here in the tropics low lands in the Philippines. Where it gets 38 plus Celsius in summer plus the humid and it gets 20 to 17(rare) in cold season.
My friend gave me 3 maple japanese bonsai from Baguio its still alive but idk how it will survive for upcoming summer heat haze
I had tried acclimating them using ac while the plant is enclosed with a DIY greenhouse so it maintains its moisture. The problem is keeping them here is very risky I need help
Hey guys just saw ur video on maples really enjoyed I have a question I purchased a bloodgood maple seeding about 30in tall,I plan to use it as a bonsai I do live in south Tex I would like to repot it do I let it grow and not cut it back now? Also it's mid July should I wait to repot? Enjoying it videos. Thanks for ur response, David.
Can you guys add a filter to your website for high heat, full sun, etc,?
Needing to know your ranking for the most RED of red Japanese maples…
Good video to make for sure
I live in Collin County, TX (Plano). Do you rate your Japanese maples with the AHS (American Horticulture Society) Plant Heat Zones? Mine would be Zone 8 or 9 depending on the year.
I’ll have to look into that I haven’t used it. We go by the USDA cold hardy zones and heat index ratings
Ive always wondered. If you plant a maple tree at a country that is at the center of the earth's equator. Will the tree drop leaf at some point
Typically maples have a forced dormancy which eventually weakens them in areas without dormancy. From my trials though customers the foliage will drop at random times abs then try to re-real which can cause stress at sometimes of the summer for sure
What is the best maple to plant in 8b zone in south Alabama? It will get a good bit of sun and I want one that is going to be smaller. I want to plant it at the corner of a house next to a porch. I just purchased the baldsmith lace leaf, a kinshi golden thread and a jubilee. I was thinking the golden thread or the lace leaf but not sure. I have also purchased. 2 ginkgos but I would have to use the spring drove dwarf if that would be a better choice.
I received some maple seeds as a gift of a friend of mine that lives in Colorado. I live in Brazil and according the description of USDA hardiness zones, my city is a zone 10 city. Can I plant here?
You can try but they typically work zones 5-9
Ok, so I know it’s not particularly well suited to central Florida, but I just couldn’t resist the Acer Taylor…I plan to shade her with 55% shade cloth and keep her in a container so I can move her if she begins to suffer. Do you have any other tips to help this vulnerable young tree grow until it becomes established and a little more heat tolerant?
Shade typically works best in zone 9 FL. Check out region out. That said I also find Taylor to be very hard to grow anywhere. It will need extreme shade it’s not heat tolerant
Just a dummy question .... I live in California near the desert. Can I plant my maple tree on the east side of my house (backyard) and plant it in the middle of my grass ? like is it gonna get root rotten ? Thank you so much, liked and subscribed!
What is considered 'dry soil'? I let my maples dry out between watering. I dig down about 3 inches and clump a palm full of soil in my hand. If it clumps together, I don't water. If not I water, but the soil is still damp. Should it be more dry?
That seems like a good standard. I do the same

Be conscious guys. Be conscious.
Sarasota is zone 9, you said you recommend it be shaded? I wanted a glowing ember Japanese Maple but I have zero idea how to SHADE a tree and from which direction. Like if my backyard gets afternoon light (west) then don't plant it there?
Trying to grow a crimson queen mable tree in the Corpus Christi to area any advise
I bought my first red maple Japanese bonsai, unfortunately it arrived wilting and over watered like crazy! I'm in Los Angeles area, I think that's zone 9 and 10? Not sure exactly. I was trying to recover the plant indoors until it got full of pests because it was already so weak upon arrival, I placed it outside hoping for better results and it got burned and now it's bald and leafless. Gardening is my hobby always had been, but with this specific plant I'm at a loss for what else to do. There is no shade in my patio. The only East facing sun is in the kitchen window. I don't know what to do, can any of you guys give me any advice?
Indoors can be extremely hard on a Japanese maples. I would try a shady spot outside for recovery
@@MrMapleShow thank you, I will try 🙏🤞🤞🤞 my patio unfortunately is a West facing place with extreme sun, wish the plant luck, thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
Im in high heat area (45 celsius), i keep my maples behind tinted glass on a unheated deck but pay for it cause my trees dont give their wonderfull colors 😔, any advice
Hi Tim and Matt. I’ve got several japanese maples in Indonesia. They have been growing for a few years. I was wondering if there was a method to trick Japanese Maples to go dormant since indonesia doesnt have seasons.
Dormancy can be tricky in hot zones. They do need a dormancy period to do their best. We typically recommend them in the us in zones 5-9 because in zone 10 they try to stay to active. I have had customers in Hawaii refrigerate bonsai in pots to achieve this. In the ground is hard as they tend randomly drop leaf for my customers in Miami and have a shorter lifespan for sure. I don’t know but I would experiment with trimming foliage on a smaller one strategically at first to see maybe
I have 5 foot tall potted JM on a high balcony in Tokyo, Japan. My maple got too hot and lost all the leaves. I keep watering it but I’m not getting any green back. Is it time to toss it?
If it has healthy buds and it isn’t crunchy it should be ok. Scratch the bark near the top and look for green underneath. If needed repeat lower and lower.
@@MrMapleShow I just did the check for green tissue. None to be found from the top branches to bottom trunk that about an inch in diameter. No buds present either. I had lest it under the care of my neighbors for a month while I was on vacation and I think the summer heat toasted it. I tried to water it frequently when I got back but think I stress the roots out and possible killed them too. If I cut it all the way back and let it dry out before watering again, will it’s sprout in spring?
Does Aaron from California
Make videos about maples?
A quick question Japanese maples do good in hot areas .I live in Las Vegas which one would be best for my area ??
Typically no. Last Vegas doesn’t have much of a dormancy period for them. Typically zones 5-9

What do y’all recommend for DFW area 8a?
Lots that works great in zone 8. We have some filters a lot of what we do is ideal for zone 8. Sun or shade can change it some

Which Japanese maple grows up to 10'-15' tall in Central Florida (zone 9b) area?
Fireglow is a favorite for that but it will need some shade in zone 9 Florida
@@MrMapleShow what about in zone 8A with the fire glow? Eastern NC. I’m having a hard time with one that I bought last fall. It’s in the ground and I’m pretty sure half of the tree is done for.

Can these grow in the Philippines?
I think so. We don’t ship there though
I acclaimated a Red emperor in the tropical climate of the Philippines, Do you have any pointers? I'm planning to eventually plant this tree in the town park?

Mr. Maple gift card!
Can I grow one of these in Las Vegas
Not typically it’s a little to humid
Try an experiment with a straight Acer P. planted in the ground. Morning sun, afternoon shade. Keep it well watered in the hot summer months and give it some occasional water in a dry winter situation. Be sure the soil drains well and remember to apply mulch around the base.
