Good drainage, avoid weedkiller too close, avoid weed-eater damage to trunk(protect with tomato cage), don’t bury with mulch, don’t over fertilize! Thanks, very helpful video!!

This summer I have been living in 100 degree plus heat , I have been overwatering and I have killed 3 of my trees , well they were seedlings. One thing I have learned is an overwater JM looks like a under watered maple. I am trying to save my last tree and I think I caught it in time. I have planted in clay pots not in the ground. I have them living under the shade of an oak tree. Been an expensive learning curve

Once again, thanks to the Nichols bros for your helpful hints. I have several Mr Maple trees growing in my garden now and today will be transplanting several more. Hopefully, I will be able to come to your nursery this fall and see what you have been making possible for all us JM addicts. Many thanks, keep up the good work!

My two approaches for avoiding damaging my trees with weed killer or weed wackers is 1) making a wide planting hole/area with woodchip mulch and 2) I have an handle held hedger cutter that also works for grass. So I can trip edges like a barber cutting a fade with clippers so I don't cause any damage.

My number one tip is to use a LOT of sifted and rinsed pumice or similar rock in your container soil mix. Mine is mostly (~60%) pumice and diatomaceous earth granules, mixed with bark, all sifted to remove fine particles that will create mud, silt, sand or concrete that will horribly block drainage. Particle size is extremely important for all of the ingredients of your soil, perhaps more important than what the soil is made out of. I like to imagine the roots like to breathe as much as I do and any compacted soil is suffocating them and drastically reducing growth. In high heat areas, you might want peat for more water retention, but lots of pumice will still create much needed pockets of air throughout it. I still use a little bit of peat for growing in the PNW, too.

I would only add 1 more tip and it does relate to heat protection in mid summer. I have my collection in pots and when I know it’s early summer it’s time to move them in order for the sun not to burn the. Leaves. On a 100 degree + day with very low humidity and hit winds the leaves will get burnt if left in full sun.

Hi @mrmapleshow, can you guys cover how to prune/grow in-ground Japanese maples to maximize their size? I see instructions on how to prune branches/roots to keep them smaller. I would like to know how to get them big. for instance, trimming cause more growth, but do I trim the leader? I have a few that i'm trying to grow taller, but they are staying as pencil thickness, and at 6ft tall, probably too fragile to remove the stake.

I’m in southern Mississippi. We’ve been successful with waterfall, emperor/bloodgood, ryusen, and a couple more laceleafs. I’d add that some breeze is key, at least in the deep South. A covered patio almost mimics tree line if facing the right direction, as long as there’s air circulation. 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Someone said that I’m better off planting them underneath pines but not oaks because of soil pH. What’s your thoughts on that?

We have one from a starter. Planter barrel in the back yard. It came with a few leaves. The summer is hot so, oh I've had to adjust watering to not under or over water.
The leaves that came with it, dried and fell off. Though the stalk is green and reddish, they've not produced any new leaves yet.
Across from it is our Chinese Wisteria, planted at the same time, had much less growth than the Maple, but it is thriving with stems and leaves are happening.
Is it just a matter of the Maple readjusting to the new mulch soil and new environment or am I over looking something? We planted them at the beginning of June. July the leaves had dried and died. I pruned the remaining few. it's now August.

It's also a great opportunity to find seedlings as well as staying away from the maple with a weed eater. Freaked the mail carriers out a few times since they couldn't see me at all when I spoke to them. 😂

I thought It would give better drainage.. that wasnt a good idea. I discovered my tree is not growing, and have sun burn scrotch.. the soil were very wet and like a pizza dough. i believe it lead to the wet feet. I had something chew the base of my Blood Good probably a rabbit. Lucky the trunk was a few inches in diameter but all the bark was chewed off one side. I put pruning sealer on immediately when I noticed. That was last year, since then it’s healed but only around the edges. The whole wound was to large to heal completely and the core of the tree was and still is exposed. I paint on pruning sealer every season just to be safe. The tree seems unaffected but I hope it doesn’t cause problems down the road. Should I rap the trunk with anything to try and promote better healing or prevent disease or do you think the sealer is efficient?
