    The past few years I have enjoyed collecting seedlings and appreciating the variability of each one from the parent tree.
    I would love to listen to a podcast on maple lineage and hear where some of the cultivars we enjoy today originate.
    I appreciate all the content y’all have been putting out recently. Your videos help me get through the work day!

    Much of this is the same advice on watering house plants where we walk the line with root rot. I'm always aware of the rain cycles and don't water until it's just on the dry side. That being said we have to consider the effect of mulch preserving the moisture. And as always rain water is better than tap and is preferred.

    This got me really thinking about ensuring I have proper space under all my potted maples. I’d already put risers on the ones on my deck. Now you’ve got me running out tomorrow to pick up some bricks for the ones in my landscape. Great tip!

    Great video, I am in zone 9b. Just got a tree I was thinking of keeping it in a pot, since I am in 9b with summer around the corner should I find a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade? I don't want my plant to burn. I am very new to growing anything. Unfortunately, I have a black thumb. I really want this tree to survive!!

      You can or to the ground. In zone 9 in a pod you will need alot of shade

    Here in florida... I have super sandy soil... drains great.... not alot of nutrition though... do I need to add something to the soil? Or just feed the trees??

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It’s great to have some additions. A similar soil mix works but it never hurts to add organics like compost to a very sandy mix.

    In zone 5 during winter if I insulate around my pot can I keep outside?

    • @MrMapleShow

      Best to be planted or bring into an unheated area

    What I do on my pod is put 3/4 plumbing pipe all the way down to bottom of the pod. Each conner. So I can water into the pipes.

      I’m sorry I’m not understanding the question. The key with the water is good drainage so make sure it’s not staying wet from this system

    Great episode. Faithful listener. Curious about the negative comments about moisture meters. I have heavy clay soil and the top 2-3 inches of soil can be dry but it can be quite wet down 8-10 inches. If I relied upon my fingers in the top 2 inches of soil I would be overwatering. Hence the moisture meter.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Před rokem +1

      Not really negative as much as it isn’t always that easy to set automatic water by

      @@MrMapleShow Thanks for responding! No, I use it to gauge when I need to hand water. I made the mistake of overwatering in the past. The worse they looked the more I watered!

      We do talk about it but area does determine a lot. Most maples in nursery pots will need some shade. They are much more durable in the ground for heat

    Can you comment on how much water and sun when dormant ?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Před rokem +1

      Greatly depends on how much natural water they receive. If they are in a shed 2-3 times when above freezing. If receiving natural water they may not require more. I do recommend watering after extreme freezes

    What are your thoughts on hot days to shower the leaves some late afternoon but not water the rootball, makes sense that they would enjoy it?....I'm thinking some JPs need more water than others, palmatums vs disectum ...My coral barks are 20 ft and I never water them in 7b.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Před rokem +2

      Only the rootball water would matter. May cause leaf scotching

      Yes, absolutely but it does need more water. Sometimes with a pot it’s good to mix in some of your natural soil also with the bag mix

    I bought my first Jap. maples (7 total) this fall. My new maples are in pots. It’s been raining constantly for the past weeks in NYC and the plants do not get a chance to dry out. Should I place them in my porch with roof? Pls advise.
