- How far can you hunt with Winchester Long Beard XR lead turkey ammunition? To find out I tested both the maximum range at which I could get a reasonably dense pattern and I did a ballistics gel test to find out how much power the loads have at the furthest range their pattern is still good. The results of this test should a much further effective range than I was expecting. I did the test are various ranges include 40, 50, 60, and 70 yards.

I used Winchester Long Beard XR Magnum #6 in a 3" shell with 1 7/8 oz of copper plated lead shot traveling at 1050 fps. I used a Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey with a Holosun 507k Optic and a Carlson's Long Beard XR Choke measuring at 0.660. #turkeyhunting #winchester Thanks so much to Holosun for providing the optic.

Good video George! Congrats on getting mentioned on the Surviving Duck Season channel. It actually put a smile on my face hearing him mention you.....Good for you!
Thanks so much! I almost veered off the road when I heard it! I was listening to his video when I was driving home from work lol
Thanks for doing these reviews and keep them coming please.
Honestly you are a great and informative videographer. Thanks
Thank you so much!
Thanks for doing all these tests and sharing it
Looks like we both need to work on our dry fire training too 😂
@@bent5434 After shooting over a dozen turkey loads in a day of test videos, you flinch even when other people shoot, ha.
Thanks!
As always another awesome video.
Thank you so much!
Another great vid bud
Thank you so much!
Reality is that 50 yards is still a long old way - at some point you have to change your focus on trying to get them closer instead of trying to reach out further.
Because every bird WILL come in closer if you do *just* the *right* things 🙄
I agree. Not trying to go infinitely further. Just want to know the realistic limits of our ammo.
@@veteranironoutdoors8320 Wow, so true, why didn't I think of that?
@@veteranironoutdoors8320or maybe exercise some constraint and maturity and hunt another day in hopes a bird does come in at a distance where you can take a shot that’s guaranteed to make a clean kill.
@@ri7589 HA. Your brand of ethics means nothing to me. If I can reliably kill it at 70 and he just ain’t coming closer for the shot I would prefer, hes gonna be a goner.
Never shot turkey past 30-40 yards.
This is my turkey load of choice. Love this ammo.
Best lead ammo on the market!
My father in law and I have shot three turkeys this year ranging from
Awesome season for you guys! Great job!
Finally somebody talked about the crazy long distance shooting 😊, I'm glad you put a lot of the BS to rest I shoot lbxr, TSS is good to,but you have limited distance with both,as always brother great&very informative video, the best on the internet ❤
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I always say, half the reason I make the videos is for myself, because I want to know. That is why I made the first ones, and just figured someone else might want to as well.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide WE NEED THE BODY GLUES TO BE AS BIGGER THAN SIDE WALLS TO TEST THE BEST THE GUN IN THE LONGEST RANG WITH WIDEST PATTERNS TO BRING DOWN AS MANY GEESE WITH A SINGLE SHOT 🎯🎉🎊👏
Thanks for sharing, very informative. Winchester should've sponsored u
Thanks! I'm sure I've helped them sell alot of turkey ammo, I wish they would at least send me shells to test and make videos from.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I would like to see gel test at 40 and 60 yards with the long beard 3” 1200 1 3/4 5s compared to the 3”1200 1 3/4 6s just to see if one is better than the other. Thanks 11:31
Thanks so much!
Nice one- who needs TSS shot; even up to 60yds. Save some money: shoot more!
Thanks!
I was surprised how deep they penetrated at 70 yards. Seems like they would be good at 50 or 60 even at the 6 shot size
Yea, not enough for 70. But definitely not bouncing off of turkeys at 50 as some people claim.
They would do the job at 60 and you have more pellets with 6 shot
I've got an idea for the longbeard xrs. Do a penetration test with the magnum loads vs. the regular loads. What I notice is that the magnums have a bigger payload, but the velocity is reduced. The magnums have a listed velocity of 1050 fps, and the regulars have a listed velocity of 1200 fps.
That is on my list! Thank you!
I was lucky enough to get a tom at 20 yrds and another at 25 using Winchester Longbeard 3 1/2 #5s..
Both birds kinda came out of nowhere so thankfull I lucked out on both.
Did either Gobble?
@@TheNewHuntersGuide the first one at 20 yrds strutted, puffed up, and gobbled as he strutted up to my decoys. The second one was quiet as a church mouse..Got them on the same field two days apart..
@mikeramone003 wow nice!
My longest range Turkey load is my own reload, found in the RCBS loading manual. Factory loads are OK, but not good enough. Many shells and shotguns, have the ability to handle significantly higher pressures than factory rounds. Reloading shot shells, will give you far superior performance, over factory rounds. ESPECIALLY in single shot actions, that can handle significantly higher pressures.
What is your payload and shot size?
Wonder if there is a difference in penetration from the 1050 FPS Load and the 1200 FPS load
It's a great question. Probably some. I don't trust any of the formulas to say how much because they just do not all jive with real test results, but it's worthy of another test video at some point.
Hey George! Did you get the shell that would not cycle to fire? God bless you and go get them in the marsh!!
Yup, fired just fine. If you loaded it first you would have never known. But man it wouldn't cycle for anything! Ejected fine though.
Could you test the 20 gauge longbeard xr?
I would very much like to! Just need to find me a 20 gauge. It's only a matter of time.
What gun and choke combo would u recommend for longbeard xr 20 gauge 6 shot (would like a choke that an also shoo tss)
For long beard, I've seen good results across guns and different models with the Carlson's Long Beard choke tube. It's rated for TSS also.
You should really do that test again with a 20 gauge. I can't seem to get my sx4 20 gauge to pattern well and I am not sure if its the ammo or the choke (or just the combo)
What ammo? I don't have a 20 right now.
I run a .560 Rectifier in my 301 20ga
That .560 choke works fantastic with both #9 tss and longbeard xr #6's through my 20ga.
My jaw dropped when I saw the patterns I was getting with the longbeard #6 lead
Actually that .560 choke loves any 20ga #6 lead load you run through it.
I've tried multiple #5 lead loads and that .560 just doesn't seem to like a lead #5 load , but becomes a totally different shotgun running #6's
Shout out to George’s shoulder for making this video
Haha, thank you!
👍
Holy flinch job
Shooting 20 turkey shells a day for test videos isn't as easy or fun as you might think.
If you plan to shoot 60 plus #4 shot size only, way more energy.3.5" kills past 60 many times
Energy wise yes. But all my testing shows the pattern deteriorates so much by that distance with 4s that the energy doesn't matter. 5s or 6s are better at long range because you can still get enough pattern on the head and neck to hit the bird. However, in either event, due to pattern or power loss. Lead maxes put around this range. You can't go a whole lot further.
Which is better for turkey hunting pattern, Jebs or Indian Creek choke tube at same restriction?
No way to be sure without testing them. What ammo and gun?
I think if you kill one with a shotgun at 70 yards with any shot you got real lucky. I misjudged one last year and had it right on him. He left out of there with a peppering. I don’t think he flew off dead; I think he just flew off. I thought he was 50, but he was about 70… You can definitely kill them all day, every day at 50, though.
That extra 20 yards definitely makes a huge difference!
I wonder what the penetration would be with the 5s and 4s at that same distance
#5s have about 15% more penetration than 6s, #4s have about 30% more than 6. You could do the math and probably get pretty close.
This gun and waterfalw which one it's best for long range?
The waterfowl has a 4 inch longer barrell so it's probably slightly better for long range shooting.
Yes this is what I want to hear from you 😊 thank you we are waiting for your best video ❤️
“Most people are not shooting turkeys at these ranges”. Most people trying to sharpshoot you in the comments are not shooting turkeys.
Haha, thanks.
72 yds is the longest we have ever killed with Longbeard xr's. We shoot #5's. We have killed 3 at 60 plus yds.
That's a good poke there!
Thats WHY a Pump is ALWAYS 100% better to use
Use what you like.
Seen a little flench
There was more than a little. But the end of this day I had recorded 3 turkey ammo videos. I was beat to a bruised pulp.
I have a better chance finding the lost ark then finding 3 1/2 #6’s these days
Ha, these were only 3"
I have both 3" and 3 1/2" in 6 shot as a matter fact killed my second turkey with the Ole Remington 870 Super mag at 20 yards it made a jelly head
.223 over 12ga im good out to 200 yards...lol
Coyotes beware
Haha, only if it's legal to hunt turkey's with one in your state.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide it is...WV
Too bad we’re not neighbors
Where you from?
Try shooting real birds to get some different results, the ballistics gel doesnt really count for how well the pellets can penetrate bone. At 45yds the 1200fps loading of #6 does not humanely kill birds reliably. That magnum load starting out 150fps slower isnt doing any favours either.
It's a good load for a factory choke or fixed choke barrel to fill out a pattern to get to almost 40yds, but with an aftermarket choke your pattern is reliable much further than your pellets are reliable. Where one of the other longbeard options can gain you more.
So how can we quantify power at range more objectively? We need a way to measure this to get data that is reliable.
I stoned a bird the other day at 53 yards with #6 1200 fps. Seen my brother smoke one at 64 yards with the same ammo. It gets enough penetration to get the job done. Me personally don't shoot it past 55 but that's my personal benchmark
@@TheNewHuntersGuide that is a good question, nothing really substitutes with a slow projectile like the real thing. Like when I used to breed turkeys, test subjects were plentiful and a lot of info could be gathered in a controlled manner.
For an artificial test media, ballistics gel does a reasonable job at replicating soft tissue, so perhaps turkey neck bones, cleaned by insects (better than cooked/tempered bone) soaked to keep moisture content, molded into a gel block. I'm not sure how to replicate the skin as it has some additional resistance and give to it. Could adjust the figure for how much penetration into ballistics gel is needed to be comparable to a bone breaking hit once it is established how far it is. It would just seem that the pellets are showing much better performance on gel than the real thing.
@@NorthRiverGuide That is kind of doable. But the gel cooks for 6+ hours at 260f it would break down the bones like a slow cooker. And there would be alot of variability. I wonder if perhaps a pine board in the gel might do better. But that's problematic for other reason. The gel would be ruined after 1 treatment most likely. It would be an expensive test.
Why on God's green earth would you do all this but not spend the 5 minutes to sight in your red dot beforehand?
Because I did 3 test videos that day, all with different shells, all with different point of impact, and I did 3 others the previous day. I sighted it in for the ammo I plan to hunt with. No reason to waste tons of ammo and time sighting it in for all the ammos I'm testing if I'm just doing 1 video with them.
Told you😂
I see you have never tested your gun. Have you done one with the number 6 with .640 choke?
👍
