ఈ సమయంలో, శ్రీలంక అని పిలువబడే దేశాన్ని గతంలో సింహళంగా పిలిచేవారు. నేడు సింహళంగా పిలవబడే భాషను గతంలో సింహళ ప్రాకృత అని కూడా పిలిచేవారు. అంటే సింహళం ప్రాకృతం యొక్క స్థానిక రూపం. అంతకుముందు కూడా దీనిని కొద్దికాలం తంబపన్ని అని పిలిచేవారు. భారతదేశంలో రామాయణం ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన తర్వాత హిందువులు ఆ దేశాన్ని శ్రీలంక అని పిలవడం ప్రారంభించారు. పేర్లు అధికారికంగా 1972లో వర్తింపజేయబడ్డాయి. అప్పట్లో ప్రభుత్వంతో సంబంధం ఉన్న వామపక్ష రాజకీయ నాయకులు ఆ పేరును వాడుకోవడం మొదలుపెట్టారు. దీనికి కారణం సింహళం అనే పేరును ఉపయోగించడం వల్ల శ్రీలంకలోని తమిళం మాట్లాడే కొద్దిమంది తెగలకు అన్యాయం జరుగుతుందని వారు విశ్వసించారు.
