As a bodyshop man my review is:
-not only using a dual action sander to leave finer scratches
-no soft pad on sander/not always keeping sander flat causing low spots
-no extractor in sander leaving dust in every little gap
-not spraying in a booth to suck away dust and fumes in the air
-should have sanded 240 grit down the original paint then covered those scratches with 320 grit, then high build prime, flat back with block and DA sander using 500 grit, finally 1000 the whole thing over
-dont wet sand anywhere near exposed filler, it will absorb the water like a sponge, expand and then eventual pop of the metal.
-the mixing of filler was painful, but your spread wasnt too bad XD
-dont flat filler with you hand, use a block, you will make low spots that look wibbley wobbly and
show up when painted
-rattle cans are a sin, but at least heat them up first XD maybe leave them in hot water for a little while then give good shake
-ideally 4 layers of rattle can primer, you want 2-3 of actual primer and rattle can is never as thick
-after gray highbuild prime you should spray a light mist of black to make a guide coat, this shows you when youve fully taken the top layer off and made the surface flat. black patches=low spots
However, as a viewer:

side note: yes technically anyone with minimum training can be a automotive painter. but not everyone can be a good painter. surface prep, application, finishing all take years to master.
I'm currently learning to paint in a factory (non automotive) honestly, it's just the consistency of your work, making sure you've got thick enough layer while not overspraying, and everything gets covered evenly. I lol'ed at their short strokes, where I work, you start spraying before the item and finish after it, going through it nonstop, but then again, i'm not even sure rattle cans can spray an entire door in one go, but they went super short strokes
And by entire door, i mean one go from left to right and vice versa
Nice full description, thanks 👍
@@PastLight yeah for sure, if he was spraying something metalic like a silver it would show horrible lines where they start spraying over the panel.
Consistency in this trade is definitely key, but the biggest thing is knowing when you messed up and how to fix it.
No paint sprayer is perfect with flawless jobs all the time. Most will lie and say they’re the best.
The truly great guys are humble
@@moorhouse9949 Ohh yeah, I work with wood mostly (wooden windows and doors) and most painters are cocky, but after a few months you start realizing they're full of shit, cause everyone makes mistakes, but yeah, the ones I try to really listen to, are the humble ones, and they are the ones I always go to to fix stuff, cause they know all the tricks
Warm the aerosol tins in some warm water ,they will spray finer and better
Use boiling hot water for the best experience!
It's a joke. I know that spray cans in warm water is good and helps with the spray!
@@blockbertus Personally i use a gas burner
@@abdullahz4804 I usually put them in the oven for 10 minutes
yeah i watched chrisfix too

You know it's a great video when Alex and Taylor are filming together
Might be my fav content on CZcams coming from you guys atm. Love the work keep it up
I agree. Has been that since “2 guys 1 car” times
As someone who works in a bodyshop, this was painful to watch 😂
🤣
Was just about to say the same thing 😂😂 spraying over this will be fun……bagsey not doing it
Ad someone who has no experience, this was painfully funny to watch
It is painful to watch Alex in general 😂
PS on the serious note Alex is the only reason I open CZcams these days
Agreed.. Apparently it's a 'piece of piss' 🙄😒😕😂🤣
Car throttle need to take note on the consistency of Alex’s videos
they dont have anything without alex im afraid
@@legin3753 he still works with them just freelance so only when he wants to. His Channel blew up real quickly so doesn't really need to do CT anymore
Car... who? loooool
@@legin3753 what?
@rhyswilliams4893 don't know why he stayed with CT for so long. It was his show and he didn't get any share in the business. Poor business decision from the owners of CT tbh as now they're fucked without him. Better a share of something than all of nothing.
Taylor just makes it 10 x funnier.... I also find "Taylor Made" an unbelievably awesome name for a company... ingenious!
You obviously don’t play golf!😂
Right? So good!
@@arghjayem I...but...did you...
I give up.
Fancy leaving Alex to sand the roof, while Taylor works on the boot.
Poor sod cant reach it all without a box. 👌🤣🤣
Another great video 2x👍
Great video, love the new garage about time this channel had its own space. Looking forward to see the next video
you make my day Alex, especially after a 4.30 start to 8pm, thank you, my brother!
I think Taylor got that backwards. It would have been a lacquered paint from factory, but the door has previously had a single stage repaint at some point in its life..
Bodywork is definitely one of the hardest things to get right and takes a lot of time and patient. Can't wait to see the results!
Alex! Props to you for taking on something like this without researching it!! I've never done a job this big, but I regularly repaint panels from my driveway on the cars I sell.. once it's polished looks almost factory these days. Practice makes perfect!
In Brazil, in a worst scenario where there's filler on some points, we sand with 80, 150, 220, 320, apply primer, sand the primer with 320, 400, 600, then apply paint if the paint is Poliester or PU based. If it's rattle can, we sand the primer again with 800 then paint. That's kinda the common sense over here.
This was hilarious! Gotta love the Alex/Taylor duo! Hope Fabrizio's new coat turns out good. I'll be honest anything you do would be better than I could do with paint! Keep up the great content!
When are you guys releasing the next part! Genuinely enjoyed this! You've gained a follower
I really enjoyed the video. Its good content on cars with a laugh at the sametime. Keep up the great work.
As a professional detailer this was hilarious but also added to my PTSD levels. But good on you for having a go lads 😂😂

Alex and Taylor are like a classic comedy duo.... Very Little and Large.
once again the banter is absolutely on point and i end up crying every time, bravo
Man I f-ing love this channel, one of my favourites🔥
Like two childhood friends reunited. Absolutely love your duo
Absolute gold. I really hope you get a pro in to review the finished job :)
Awesome video guys. I cant wait to see how this comes out!
Ey up from the York-shire. Yours and Taylor's primer coat looks great. Enjoyed your vid.. Cheers
Congrats on the unit thing seem to be goin good well done guys
for anyone who wants to do a DIY respray on their car on a budget.
go take a look ad 2K Ephanis Yacht paints.
with one can 0.75kg u can do a entire car in one layer and that is around €38,--
no need for any clearcoat or primer (primer won't hurt offcourse)
asuming u allready have a compressor, a cheap paintgun is around €28,-- from Silverline. it wil do the job just fine.
for around €30,-- u probally wil have al the sandingpaper , degreaser, protection and tape u need for a car.
so for around €100,-- u can do a decent job that is better then probaly a rattle can job.
I rattle-canned my own Fiat 20v turbo last year! Issues/lessons: 1. the multiple little dents in the doors from supermarket car parks also stone chips in the front. 2. I didn't have the knack so I took off the boot lid and practised on the inside of it. 3. Getting the main colour even - I needed to keep going back to look at it in different lighting , outdoors was best. 4. The 2nd lacquer coat was a ba*d. 5.all clear coat was a ba*d. 6. keep your pets and birds away from walking all over your car when it's wet. That's my 2c.
Thank you for all the amazing videos, I really appreciate your work 🛩️🚀.
Taylor should have his own channel he's a very funny likable guy and i love how you 3 guys all bounce off each other makes great viewing.
He does but never uploads 🤷🏽♂️
Dose the man respond to me your content is amazing I’ve been watching for just 2 days your videos are amazing! Keep the work up
can't wait to see how this turns out!
Me too! 😅
Taylor and Rory’s channel is great. Who’s the other bloke?
Love your work 👍
Great video as always. It looked really good in primer. It's strange to see you being sensible(ish), really glad you aren't ruining it though, it's a cool car.
Awesome Alex and Taylor, much luck for 2023.
Great work guys💪🔥
Very entertaining to watch. Keep up the good work guys 🤣
You can get a surprisingly good finish with rattle cans as preparation and technique goes a long way to end up with a good result. Obviously having proper spray guns, paints and a booth take it from good from a far territory to perfect!
Take your time on the prep, use the 'correct' primers and paints at the right temperature and long strokes across entire panels!
There is a reason respray prices vary so much. Very much you get what you pay for!
The Italian sheet metal bit where Alex is doing CPR on the car had me in stitches 😂
Love this channel very educational 😂
Where's part 2 on thissss .. dieing to see it finished
My Mum had one of these from brand new and the lacquer started to peel off (roof and boot lid) it when it was less than 2 years old. So I am going to say you are mistaken. Either the door has been resprayed, or it's lacquer has completely peeled off it. The lacquer on the boot more or less washed completely off my Mum's car one afternoon.
Her car went through a set of HT leads pretty much once a year, they were more or less a (very expensive) consumable item.
It was still a glorious car! I would love one.
Going to use some of these helpful tips on my sprinter
As someone who worked in the Bodywork trade for 20 years this had me in stitches. I good finish can be got with rattle cans but as always its all about the preparation.
Hi Alex you should have used Scott pads to provide a key as the sander leaves marks. Wet and dry paper is used to remove any marks. Mask over parts not to be sprayed.
Not too bad for a complete novice....... just one main thing to point out, Degrease and then tack rag, once the degrease is done you should not be touching it with bare hands!! i would sugest you get a couple of Aerosol handles too, i did try to link to what they look like but it got deleted. Aerosol handles saves your pinkies from going numb and thats usally when the job goes to shit.
Taylor is the single best thing that happen to CZcams since CZcams happened.
need episode 2 !!!!
Prediction for the roof (just before they started spraying): A good "how to make it look like a hail-damage car" instruction. The rest seems pretty good!
You can actually get a professional quality result for the clearcoat using rattle cans by using a 2k clear, I've used Spraymax in the past and it came out great, but they're like 30 euros a can lol. Sadly the metallic from the same brand seems to have have flakes that are just slightly too big. On the plus side, I did it 2 years ago and it still looks as good as when I just did it.
if you got a big enough tank compressor and cheap spray gun probably yes. or rattle can in right enviroment for that
Oh man this is hard to watch as a bodyshop technician. But such good fun to watch
i was a paint sprayer apprentice for a few months until i got a permanent knee injury, it is making me laugh because i made similar mistakes when i started lol
Love it. Reminds me on how I worked on my first car, a ‘88 polo. Despite the lack of skill, at least the rust wasn’t showing up anymore. Good memories😊.
I daily an 88 polo 😅 breadvan rules
@@johrose3511 mine was a breadvan too!
actually ....from a distance not too bad! think the colour will go on well ....however clear coat in that inviroment ? you can always blame the weather guys! great vid ! great guys cant wait for the reveal......if it goes well Halfords will sell out of paint cans in a month! 🤐
I did this on my rear bumper yesterday, rather impressed actually!
Alex and Taylor killing it atm.
I've painted a couple motorbikes and some car parts with rattle cans over the years and I'm now getting great results so I want to pass on 2 pieces of advice. BUY YOUR AEROSOL CANS FROM A CAR PAINT SUPPLIER! Never use Halfords or similar, especially the clearcoats. Also the 2K rattle can clear coats (with the pull ring or button, never the pre-mixed) are expensive but worth every penny, just wear a decent mask. If you cheap out on the cans you will fail!
Yes this is so true haha. Having used Halfords cans as well as “professional” cans the difference in finish is incredible
Could you recommend a good company?
looks nice. good job guys
Yes get in...been looking forward to this Al
Can't wait for the paint job. 🤘
I did a golf mk3 estate in a harlequin paint scheme with rattle cans. Came out ok but took forever.
Taylor in the background with the spray cans 🤣🤣🤣🤣
A couple of years ago a couple of friends and I decided to respray my Peugeot 206 with cans of 3.50 euros a piece. We bought 20, some sandpaper, some cases of beer and it;s the most fun we've had in years! It's not the result that counts, but heck we had a lot of fun. Video is on my channel, if you like "how-absolutely-not-to"-videos...
Great that Alex is not afraid of working on the same level of skill.
the tool you were using on the roof was more commonly used as a buffer, not a sander. fast spinning can heat up the metal too quickly and warp it. you generally want to stick to either block sanding (slower) or orbital sanding like what you used on the rest of the car.
Good job lads... I like your work... When can I book my Bentley in for some touch up work, please?
Bit of advice moving forward.... More/tighter jeans on Taylor's part! 😂👍 Brilliant videos, keep up the good work boyses!
Taylor excelled himself in this episode!! Proper LOL’d 👍🏼😂
Finally, a 'how to' video that shows the best way to totally f*ck up your paintwork 😂
I always buy min. a second tube of hardener sometimes 3 when I have a lot of small stuff.
When respraying cycle frames, motorbikes and a mates MGB Midget, I 'Prep' by sanding down everywhere that was getting painted... Then, BETWEEN EACH COAT of primer, base coat and clear coat, I polished up with T-cut, then a wipe over with wipes/tack cloth. Again, BETWEEN each layer.. DOING THIS helped provide a fantastic mirror finish and get rid of the dreaded 'Orange peel'. Yeah, it was a time consuming job, but... It works....
And I quote “we’ve actually done something and it’s doesn’t look s**t”. Auto Alex making the case for using a professional body shop better than anyone I know😂
Make sure before you paint place the cans in warm water and the spray will atomise much better when painting . Hope it helps . Go Alex and Taylor.
Just happy you're working on the cars
With good prep work, you can actually get a decent driver quality paint job with rattle cans.
Not show quality obviously, but ive seen it done well enough that it looks as good as the oem paint, but really if your gonna take the time to prep it, find a friend with a decent compressor and buy a real paint gun, its alot easier to get a nice paintjob.
I am loving this but budgeting an extra £300 quid would get you a basic second hand compressor and spray gun. Buying paint in tins instead of cans is far cheaper. 5 Litres of base coat will cost you a couple of hundred at most.

I’m really enjoying doing the Fiat so far, it’s come out quite well but it could all go very wrong very quickly 😂
Last time I saw a rattle can respray on a car it was an old Skoda and the finished result looked like colouring pencils and crayons 😂😂

I’m going to hold judgment and wait to see how it looks in the next video :) But best of luck mate (y) If you guys can do a decent job with rattle can’s you’ll certainly inspire us to swallow the brave pill and give it a go too :)

Top tip lads.. probably already painted by now but.. to not get dust in the paint wet the floor..
My car need a paint correction on some places but idk if I should try this as well 😂😂
Not a bad job for a £300 budget. I'm unsure what primer you were using but if you were planning on retectfying the dents with filler and wanted to prime. Should've used epoxy primer and then filled over it and painted with high build.
Flat it then vinyl wrap it maybe? need to respray 2 front wings and my front bumper rear wing where someone keyed it and crusty rear arches on my mg zr atomix yep an atomic kitten special edition mg zr 1.4 52mm throttle body and metal inlet manifold from a 1.8 original mg xpower back box no centre box exhaust
Honestly, you could probably do a better paint job with spray paint than most big name paint shops.......

If you do a really good job on the prep and sand between each layer etc.
