"Chef's Kiss!" Gibson Custom 1936 Advanced Jumbo

  • There's something about old guitars. They are less refined, rougher around the edged, built on the edge of destruction and ferocious when it comes to tone. This 1936 Advanced Jumbo from the Gibson Custom is just that. Showcases older building practices and utilizing heat treatment to elicit amazingly rich tone. Sometimes the old ways are better!

    Gibson Acoustic has stepped up their game based on some recents I have played locally. This one sounds super.

    The clarity and distinctiveness of each note, in both tone and dynamics, seems phenomenal. It will need a great player as there will be no hiding poor playing...
    Conversely, it will likely induce any player to quickly improve to tame it!

    Goodness and I mean just that "PURE GOODNESS" and TONES of it at that ( if you know what I mean). It' funny that the comments made by the other listeners below and your closing remarks mirrored those that I had said to myself as you were playing. That guitar is special and It brought out something extra special in your playing as well . If I had found that guitar many many many years ago I probably would not be such an old Martin guy.

    I love that guitar. It’s the best sounding guitar I’ve heard, and hands down the best Gibson. It’s deep, full, articulate, and “present.” It’s like John Wayne in “Rio Bravo.” My wife is shaking her head as I’m giving her my “can I please spend the money” look. It’s now at the top of my want list. Thanks for showing it to us. I grew up 2 hours Southwest of Bozeman and, for some reason, it took me back home.

    I'm a bass player who (badly) dabbles with guitar. The best sounding Acoustic I ever picked up was a used 2007-ish Advanced Jumbo at a GC in Cedar Rapids, IA. I should have bought it. Never heard anything like it before. Glad to see they are still making them!

      What was the price they were asking? I stop by the CR store from time to time and did not see it. It must have sold fairly quick.

      They are a totally different animal than other Gibsons. The AJ is louder and more powerful than Martin HD28s are. A absolute CANNON. Not what you expect for a Gibson. I had one made in 2010 and sadly it burned in a house fire 3 years ago and a new one is now 6k bucks 😢. I paid 1800 for mine used back in 2010
      But they were specifically designed to crush the Martin D28 back in the 1930s and they definitly can do it ! Rosewood, light bracing, long scale, they are a beast

    Sounds just like my Papa's Yari! He bought a brand-new Alvarez Yari in 1986, and has played it ever since. He still plays it in church. It has a booming bass sound, and I have never heard another guitar sound as good as it does. This is the only one I've heard sound anything like it! It's awesome!

    They both sound beyond amazing though I may be partial to the first of these Jumbos you showcased. While I can't afford either at the moment, I felt the first demo was pretty affordable all things considered at that around 4gs, but I didn't catch you disclosing the price on this one. More, less, same??

    I had a AJ made in 2010. Most powerful and loud acoustic guitar i ever played. A bluegrass monster! Just blew me away. I traded a Martin HD28 for it after a guy totally drowned me out with the AJ 😂. I was shocked and impressed. Sadly it burned in a house fire 3 years ago and now a new one is around 6k 😢

  • @JohnnyRebKy
    @JohnnyRebKy Před 7 měsíci

    The AJ is the CANNON of Gibson history. Designes to crush the Martin D28 back in 1936. Hence the nickname " bone crusher". Loudest most powerful acoustic guitar i ever heard and played. A bluegrass monster! Just someone talking across the room will make them resonate and ring. Mine would hum sitting on the wall when someone talked 😂. I miss it so badly !

  • @charlesjohnston5315
    @charlesjohnston5315 Před 6 měsíci +1

    Willie Henkes research on old Gibsons has shown Gibson stopped using Brazilian rosewood for back and sides in 1934. So, the original AJ's have Indian Rosewood sides and back, like this reissue. I've played 2 original AJ's and a Radio Grande Smeck. The rosewood was certainly not what Martin was using.
