My Childhood Aquarium Ornaments Revisited

  • I always liked air driven moving fish tank decorations as a kid. The bubbling treasure chests, the diver exploring the seabed, and the skeletons steering a ship. But as a lover of beautiful planted aquariums, these decorations don’t exactly fit with the usual natural aesthetic that I like to create.
So I decided to experiment with a DIY air powered aquarium ornament that looks a bit more natural. This video documents the ups and downs of trying to create something beautiful from a plastic takeaway container and an acrylic hinge. Enjoy!
The materials used for this build can be found below:
    🛒Acrylic Hinges: amzn.to/3BLizAz
🛒4oz Plastic Pots: amzn.to/3jiXuHB (or order a takeaway!!)
    🛒Christmas Moss: amzn.to/3V9kK81
    🛒Marimo Moss: amzn.to/3WuVOsS

I had a similar idea. My next tank is going to be cheesy retro fun combined with live plants. Great video!

I'm thinking of setting up a 70s themed tank, full of colored rocks, plastic plants, sunken ships, and air operated treasure chests and divers! Don't forget the incandescent lights too. It would be hidden in the basement, for my own secret enjoyment of course....

This is an amazing idea. I'm going to adapt it and credit you some day. It gave me some inspiration.

Aah thats awesome to hear. It could definitley have done with some refinement so that the surface agitation doesn't create such a mess. But it was fun building it nonetheless. Look forward to hearing about your project!

What about a sort of backwards waterfall, but instead of a constant stream of bubbles, it's single droplets of air going through a designated trail to get to the water surface. You know, like those fancy ADA CO2 drop checkers, but inside the aquarium instead of outside.

Interesting, but I think the treasure chest looks nice as is. You could’ve always put moss on it if it’s too flashy? I really like the old Penn Plax air ornaments, have a lot of them in my collection.

Ha. Very good point. But I don't think it's "flashy" that puts me off. More just a question of scale/realism.....

    Dude
    Pause
You can sell this - not like that, but imagine if the inside of that thing looked like teeth and a mouth. Glue moss, rocks, shells All over it then when it opens it looks like a predator.

At last. Thanks for speaking out and breaking the bubble toy taboo. 😂What about a slowly rotating fan as a back drop?🫧

    • @AquariumShed
      @AquariumShed  Před rokem

😂😅 Love the idea of it being taboo. I probably should have added pink gravel to my treasure chest setup too! (I don't secretly love that too....). Defo like the idea of a rotating fan style ornament, would probably break up the surface agitation too. How could we make it look natural tho?

@@AquariumShed maybe it’s a diorama aqua scape replicating the ‘idea’ of a undersea super villain submarine base? 🤫
