I love that although Eddie appears to be a no good punk, he's actually kind and considerate, especially to Chrissy and the kids in the Hellfire Club. His uncle even confirms that Eddie is a decent person, and the scene where he and Dustin say their goodbyes was so heartbreaking! 💔

Having grown up as a geek I saw a lot of that in our groups. Eddy was clearly an outcast as a kid and I think he sees that in the group and so decides to hang with them to make things better than he had it because he probably knows how lonely it can be not being the norm at school age.
Those people where always looking out for the kid sitting alone or being bullied.

They subvert that trope with Chrissy too. They set her up as the head cheerleader, the prom queen to what's his name's asshole jock king archetype. And usually that character is a bitch to everyone, and the head of a cliche of bitches, that taunt the nerdy protagonists. But, she's not. Her one interaction with the scooby gang, is with Max in the bathroom. And while she's distant, and trying to get her to leave her alone, she isn't mean about it. She's actually very nice in how she asks Max to leave her alone. She snaps later when someone bangs on the door, but that's obviously Vecna messing with her, and that level of aggressive knocking would warrant a more aggressive "fuck off" kind of reaction. But that was just in her head, not to Max. And then later, when she meets up with Eddie, again, she's not a bitch. She let's her guard down around him pretty early on, after an initial fear and hesitation. She just talks to him like a person, and then when he reveals that they knew each other as kids, and were friends, she brightens up entirely. She's smiling, engaging with him, talking about shared memories of funny times when they were kids. She never shit talks him for being the loser drug user kid from the trailer park, or anything like that. She doesn't have any pretense about their social castes. She's just happy to realize that this guy was a friend of hers, and she's reconnected with him again. It made me REALLY upset when she died by the end of the episode, as I really liked her, and was hoping she'd join the scooby gang along with Eddie.

I loved Eddie as a character. He was very unique for the "outsider"/"rebel" stereotype. Usually they are depicted as cold, standoff-ish or morbid, but Eddie wasn't. While still being a rebel that disliked the status-quo and embraced being different, he was still warm, funny, upbeat and comforting to those around him that needed it. I absolutely loved him as a character as soon as he started chatting with Chrissy in the woods, because you could tell he really wanted to brighten her day and make her smile. And when he dedicated his sick metal performance to her, it just cemented that for me.
Yeah, I really loved that character. RIP Eddie.

YES. What I really liked about Eddie from the beginning was how he treated Chrissy. When he asked her if she remembered him, and she said no, I thought it was going to be one of those cliche, "nice guy" "wow. you're so stuck up," kind of moments, but he actually turns it into a moment where she feels connected to someone and relaxes a bit when she has been in this really tense state. Like, even though he (understandably) performs some disdain for the popular people as a group, when Chrissy is sitting in front of him and clearly in distress, he almost effortlessly puts her at ease.

Eddie's character hits so personally for me. As a 38 year old D&D nerd, I lived through all the satanic panic years in a tiny little town. I had to hide my D&D books from my parents, and I've had my own fantasy novels literally thrown in my face by the other kids.

As a 41 year old D&D nerd, can confirm: the 80s and 90s were not nearly as friendly to kids, especially anyone who was enthralled by fantasy or science-fiction material. Nerd culture really didn't become acceptable outside of the occasional movie until the Lord of the Rings and the wildfire of comic book movies (Spider-Man and X-men in particular) brought it into the mainstream.
My experience was different in that my family actually played D&D, so I never had to hide the books at home, but it wasn't something one even whispered about at school. The culture contrast between then and now is absolutely insane. Nerds are their own sub-category of cool... but it's also important to bear in mind that there are plenty of other groups of people that are looked down upon, even today. The mainstream zeitgeist is a fickle thing, and groups of people are collectively capable of inflicting massive cruelty to perceived outsiders, even if it's death by a thousand tiny cuts.

@@hopeyouguess9850 wow I don’t know if you meant to parallel Eddie’s death in your last line “death by a thousand tiny cuts” but that is such an incredible way to explain his death. Yes he literally died by a what seemed like bites from a thousand bats but what other option did he have? Had he survived and returned to Hawkins it would’ve been nearly impossible to redeem him in the eyes of the people of Hawkins. He had spent his life like so many other outcasts being the receiving all these cuts. He most likely would have found a similar death in the hands of the bully’s and mobs waiting for him back in Hawkins.

Eddie's arc throughout the season was so interesting to see unfold. My friend and I got into a lengthy discussion about it because, despite all his talk about running away from problems, he constantly step up to help the people around him. It really speaks to this negative view he has of himself to say he's no hero after we see him 'walk into Mordor' time and again with the rest of his friends.

I think what is really interesting in Joseph Quinn's performance is how he plays the loud, brash side with a kind of cheeky relish and then can instantly switch to show empathy, genuine feeling and consideration for others. I first noticed this in the cafeteria scene. He went from shouting, "conformity is killing the kids!" to being really polite to the two younger girls by letting them past. He's sending up the hypocrisy of quote-unquote "normality" by being so over the top and seems really confrontational, but it's really not to be aggressive for aggression's sake. I also loved how he repeatedly and deliberately tried to help Chrissy feel at ease in their main scene. He apologised for startling her, reassured her and volunteered to leave with no prompting. He also joked around to make her laugh. He recognised her discomfort, there was a lot of active listening happening, and it was just beautifully performed by both actors. I've known a number of metal heads and punks who first appear really tough or scary, but they ultimately are the ones who are genuine softies with high levels of emotional intelligence.

This part of Eddie, his desire to make a safe place for outcasts, this is what I have been thinking about vis-a-vis leadership. Eddie's flamboyant showing-off to shock the "squares" seems annoying until you realize it's really brave. It's incredibly childish, sure. But it also says "Take me as I am, I'm not gonna pretend and I won't sit down." So he's not just making a safe place for the freaks, he's showing them bravery, even if it's unfocused and aggravating. He was brave but untested, and when faced with a danger literally unworldly, he ran away. Even though he must understand, from later experience with the group and what happens to Max, that there was no way he could have saved Chrissie, he has an emotional wound because he did run, and he values his bravery. In the end he sacrifices himself for the sake of cleaning this wound, though if he were a little older, he might see it in a different light. Staying alive to make sure he can continue to be a strong back for his group beats dying.
He died thinking of the benefit of the group. That's not the only trait a leader has to have, but Eddie had it. Eddie rocked.

I think they justified why he did what he did well enough. They just didn't go out of their way to explicitly state it. If Dustin and Eddie both went back through the gate, and the creatures broke through, they would have entered Hawkins, terrorized the town, and probably could've gotten Dustin too. Eddie was trying to draw them away from Dustin and the gateway to Hawkins. That's why Dustin told Eddie's uncle that he died fighting to save the town that hated him. I personally think Eddie should've survived since he probably did have more story to tell, but the way they justified his death was well handled nevertheless. Eddie really was an awesome character.

In addition to everything wonderful about Eddie himself, I think it's worth taking note of his uncle. He's in the show very little, and with the character that Eddie is, he could have very easily been written as just as judgmental as the rest of the rest of the townsfolk...but he wasn't. He really, _really_ cared for Eddie and stuck up for him. He defended him at every turn, and every opportunity no matter the cost it would have brought him. He saw the good in Eddie where most others only saw what they wanted to see. The last scene we had with him was truly heartbreaking, but you can tell that he never stopped being proud of Eddie.

The Dustin and Eddie friendship reminds me of something like Merry and Pippin or Sam and Frodo. It’s really close, vulnerable and intimate, but in an honestly brotherly sort of way that goes against toxically socially enforced masculine trad-behavior like you would see for example among Jason and Lucas’ sports team. It reflects the broader social status of their in-groups that have no real bearing on their inherent value, unlike what Jason later promotes, immediately taking the first opportunity to denounce them as dangerous satanists because that’s what people were told by corrupt media in those days. Now however D&D is now more popular and accepted than it ever has been, such as with programs like Critical Role and its promotion by Stranger Things itself.
In a way, this season is all about the outsider, of people dealing with alienation from society, be it at a macro or micro scale, Lucas being estranged from his old friends, Max from everyone, Mike and Eleven, Hopper and the prisoners in Russia, Will, Jonathan from Nancy and of course Eddie and the Hellfire club becoming the punching bag of society itself.
All of it getting to the core of what Stranger Things has been about this whole time, the show at its most nakedly honest, in theme and story. Eddie is the heart and soul of it all, the guy who’s proud and expressive of what makes him different and special. He’ll never be accepted by society even in death, but he’s at peace with himself even with his name still sullied because as he knew all along, they don’t need to validate you with their tolerance for you to matter, all you need that from are the people you’ve chosen to love. Ever since Chrissy was murdered in front of him he ran in fear of the pitchforks of society (which of course Jason didn’t need to), even from those he expected from his friends. And yet in the end he stood his ground against a swarm of monsters to save his friends and help give Chrissy justice. He didn’t run even knowing what it meant, because he was part of something wonderful and giving that up is real death.

And think remembering that moment - seeing her suffer with no idea what was happening to her - was as important as her death in his determination to eke out every possible second he could for the others.

I fell in love with Eddie in the darkness point in my life, I didn't fall in love with him romanticly...I fell in love with him...him as a person.
When you first meet him, he seems like a no good punk who looks crazy, but after you meet him, you realize how amazing he is.
I ended up using him as a coping mechanism in one of my darkness times....because even though he was different, weird, sometimes crazy...he was able to still be himself, not let the people who dislike the person he was take him down.
I felt like....if he was right in front of me....that he would of accepted me for me. When no one else would, he wouldn't judge me or bully me so quickly for who I am.
Even though he's a fictional character, he was my safe place when I was completely alone...he made me see the light in my darkest thoughts...even though he wasn't even trying.
I don't even know what I'm saying, I am just crying while writing this....I don't expect anyone to care, maybe I just needed to let this out...because I been feeling like no one understood why I use this fictional character as a way to get through my darkest moments.

Besides his own worth issues he takes others in. He doesn't let his history with others effect how he treat other people. He admits he was wrong about Steve. He accepts Chrissy and saw something was wrong with her. My best friend growing up was an Eddie type.
Think the best scene for Eddie was without him. Dustin explaining to Eddie's uncle how he died a hero. We saw little of Eddie and his uncle's relationship but it was obvious it was a bit combative but still showed his uncle loved him.
As an aside, I grew up in the 80's and played D&D so I saw a lot of the craziness of people. Luckily my parents took an interest and learned what it was so didn't see it as a bad thing.

My favorite scene with Eddy is his talk with Steve in Ep. 07. He really opens up in this conversation, he's not hiding behind wit or humor or sarcasm.
He admits to Steve that he was jealous of him because of Dustin's admiration for Steve
He admits that to Steve he's been wrong about him, that he thought someone like Steve could only be an asshole and that he realised Steve was, in reality, a real cool dude.
He admits that he's there only because Nancy and Robin came
And there's the implications of this conversation on that Nancy-Steve dynamic, which is very dear to my heat since Nancy and Steve are my two favorite characters

I love a lot of scences with Eddie Munson, but it's two scenes that are my favorite. The opening scene in the lunch room and his play fight scence with Dustin.
The lunch room scene speech is silly to others but I liked it a lot because If you don't fit in somewhere , things feel kinda difficult. Eddie just wanted people to not feel alone. Some of the first people who were nice to me in high school were a set of seniors who saw I was sitting alone freshman year during lunch. They asked me to sit with them the rest of semester so I wouldn't be alone. Similar to Eddie with Mike and Dustin.
I also like the scene after the play fight Eddie telling Dustin to not change. He wants Dustin to not lose sight of what already makes him special. Steve and Eddie really do look at Dustin as a little brother and value him so much. I'm really going to miss Eddie, a lot. He was always a hero in my book.

You want someone else to join you and agree with you, keep you to it but also keep you from being alone in it. Like when Eddie says "no more retreating" I think he wants at least one person in the group to agree with him like "ya no more retreating we are in this together". When I watched the cafeteria scene for the very first time, my gut reaction to Eddie Munson was “Oh, this character is off-putting,” and I was prepared to hate him for the rest of the season. I should have known better, because the Duffer brothers *never* give us mains who are straight-up stereotypes without nuance-all of their main characters are so fully realized and 3D-but as someone who spent the first 20 years of life as a terminally shy introvert, I couldn’t help the visceral reaction to his brash, vocal demeanor. (Still introverted, BTW, but now thankfully much less anxious and shy.) Yet, despite that initial reaction to the character, I was not at all surprised when, after apologizing for having startled Chrissy in the woods, Eddie read her emotional state in an instant and, with a deep, insightful look of concern-like he really *saw* her-asked, “You okay?”
In my experience, it’s often the ones who are softest on the inside who try to appear hardest on the outside. It’s armor, to protect themselves from the cruelty and lack of fairness they perceive in the world. Watching that exchange between Eddie and Chrissy, I felt an instant kinship with the character, who in his fully realized and 3D form reminded me of so many of the caring and supportive people I met in my first year of college, the goths and “freaks” who helped me start to break out of my shell and gain confidence in myself and make real friends. From that scene onward, Eddie had my heart, and I found every moment with the character completely endearing.
I only wish I'd had an Eddie in my life much sooner than I did.

could you please make a video about max and billy's complicated relationship and her complicated feelings towards her abuser's death (as we find more details about it in vol 2)?

    • @hh-ug4ki
      @hh-ug4ki Pƙed rokem +3

i think she definitely struggled more with suicidal ideation up until the end of episode 4, you could see she was ready to give up throughout the entire episode, even making letters and still shutting everyone out, but facing the actual life or death situation and seeing her friends there, helped her remember she has things to live for, she made that active choice to fight her inner (and literal) demons.
but i do feel as she still struggled with it to some degree in vol 2 as well, even though she did come to the conclusion she wants to live and you could see that in her death scene, you could see how she was affected by her monologue to vecna and how the more she talked about those thoughts she used to have, the more they came back crawling (& honestly some of her behavior in vol 2 still kind of reminded me of a person dealing with suicidal ideation, especially as she volunteered so quickly to put herself in danger again, which is a lot like how some people who struggle, practice extreme activities and put their lives on the line. Sadie Sink, the actress who played max, also said she thinks part of max knew she wouldn't survive)

I see so much of myself in Eddie, to be honest. I am hardest on myself but less so. Last week I went through the most difficult moment of my own, being secluded from everyone (even my surrogate brother due to Covid, which I don't have now), but I never felt more alone. I fear dying alone and never having anyone because I simply don't trust others that much. I like people, I really do. I want to help others, and I do. I'm not a people pleaser and I'm far from cowardly, but I hate confrontation. I think that's what cements Eddie as a Messianic character for me. He wanted to divert the bats from the portal full well knowing he'd be sacrificing himself in the meantime. He also reveals himself to be an incredible creative talent in how he sets up that epic D&D quest, I mean, good freaking Lord. Most people hate their dungeon masters, but he gave everyone a challenge that pulled them TOGETHER and worked as a team. Also, that metal solo was unbelievable. I cried buckets, and I really felt he was a beautiful, misunderstood soul, but he did receive recognition in his dying moments, and that's all we as humans ever want, is a bit of recognition and unconditional love, no matter how tiny.

Something I think you could have touched on was how Eddie's death can be viewed as a suicide. He must be painfully aware that he has nothing waiting for him in the aftermath, except a life in jail or on the run, universally condemned for Chrissy's death. Add to that his dwindling self esteem over his tendency to run, and it makes a lot of sense that he'd think the best he can achieve at this point is one last blaze of glory, with the veneer of a noble sacrifice.

I don't normally post on youtube, and I'm not sure if someone else already said it or not...but what about Eddie's talk with Steve the first time into the upside down? I feel that Eddie's talk with Steve further shows his character. He was able to help motivate Steve and point out characteristics he didn't see himself. Even from a D&D perspective, and how this shows pulls a lot of D&D references...I would argue that Eddie was quite literally the Bard of the group. He had a lot of charisma, rocked out, and most importantly inspired. Eddie's talk with Steve is just one example of his inspiration in the group. Also, as other people have been mentioning he's also inspired people who really go to know him, like Dustin's talk with Eddie's dad. Also, he inspired his own hellfire group and the main cast of Stranger Things (or at least a good amount of them that were with him).
As a side note: I really like your therapist point of views and relating it to current media. I feel these discussions are very important that youtube and even certain sections of society lacks. My favorite Eddie scenes were with Chrissy and Steve. I've loved analyzing these characters using D&D archetypes with this show and I think its really interesting how Eddie is viewed by the town as an evil Warlock, but in reality he is a wise, misunderstood, charismatic bard always inspiring others by seeing the best in them and never respecting boundaries simply for conformity's sake. He may not fight as well as Steve or be as smart as Nancy, but he really brought something special to it. I think that even though he is dead, he will very much be an active force continuing to inspire our other heroes in the years to come as the battle against the invasion of Hawkins.

In the first episode, in the DnD scene, Eddie's DM style showed that he was an uplifting DM. In moments where victory is uncertain, he reassures his players that there's no shame in temporary retreat, rather than taunting them. He congratulates his players' victory, and shows them respect with a bow. Rather than be an oppositional DM, he promotes them to heroism. Its a small thing, but as a DM myself, that told me a lot about him right off the bat.

One of the things I like most about the show is that it doesn't just mess around with the nostalgia of its setting, how it shows people of today how cool and fun the '80s were, but how messed-up that time could be as well (my city managed to evade the "Satanic Panic"...we had an actual game store within walking distance of the schools I went to, and even when that one closed down in the 2000s a new one opened across the street). I particularly enjoy how, by pure coincidence, I was merely three grades below the Hawkins Gang and into the same things as the boys...it makes the show that much more personal to me. Sadly, in 1986 I didn't have Eddie to look out for me...I had to wait another few years to have my own Bob, Larry, and Dave to show me that being a "nerd + metal" was the way to go. The joke was actually on the "conformist" kids...I got into Hollywood making chainmail armor for films and was partying at a comics convention with many of my childhood heroes instead of going to my 10-year reunion.

People who don't game might not realize this, but there are a lot of immature types who lord over having the 'power' of DM (particularly at a young age), and see the game as competitive. Which is weird. And they would be angry if their enemies are defeated. (I bumped into a lot of this in college)
That Eddie isn't like that at ALL underlines the fact that he's not some old kid trying to play out his feeling of powerlessness by dominating a bunch of smaller kids. Which is something that can come up in groups that feel isolated from the general mainstream, you get predatory types who manipulate that sense of camaraderie.
    But not Eddie.
I also was deeply affected by his death.

I was looking forward if you'd do an azlyaztion on him and always, wonderful explanation! I honestly did not like eddie at first but once I grew onto him the last scene with him made me feel as if I knew him like I lost somebody close. His actor did a great job making him so loveable. To me in poor writing skills his death is pointless, but in the characters views, it's not to them:( Also your line "this is his way of graduating as a person" I never considered that so great catch and video!:)

Eddie's death literally got me sobbing like a baby for the entirety of the rest of the episode, on top of what happened to max. Man, I never thought stranger things would have hit me so hard in the feels

I love that this theme of running away vs putting up a fight, even though it's potentially the last stand, starts out as early as the D&D game. Eddie expects the players to flee in front of apparently unbeatable odds... and they don't. Gonna miss this character a lot, wish we had more time with him :/

I find it interesting how Eddie starts off as the DM, the one holding all the cards who not only is tasked with helping the party grow and succeed, but also tasked with challenging the party and playing the villains the party is meant to defeat or fail against. Then, in real life, Eddie is trying to help someone out, trying to give Chrissy something she believes she needs in order to grow past this rough patch until Vecna strikes and causes a disaster, and suddenly Eddie’s to blame because all the normal evidence points to him. He’s cast into the role of villain by the townsfolk, he’s literally the victim the party has to protect, he’s still in these flexible roles a DM has to fill. But near the end, he finally becomes a member of the party, he trains for combat, and when faced with the choice of running to live another day or fighting and potentially dying, he chooses heroically.

If you get a chance this weekend, "A Silent Voice" by Hayao Miyazaki
If you have not seen this movie, you will not regret what it offers.
You could Piggyback on your own intelligence and take it further.
I would consider this a "must watch" for any empath or super feeler.
    Thank you for recommending Arcane.

It was not Miyazaki, the manga was written by Yoshitaka Oima and directed by Naoka Yamada
But yes it would be nice if she did an analysis on him

Wow this opened up some wounds 😱. I love Eddie and I relate so much with him because in junior high I would get picked on because people didn’t like the Slayer patch on the back of my jacket. They considered me a devil worshiper just because it had an image of a crucified devil which in retrospect makes absolutely no sense since crucifixion is not a good thing. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™‚ïž

I like the twist they gave Eddie. When you first meet him, he seems to be a bit of a bully. He doesn't care what anyone thinks.
But he's really a fun, caring marshmallow.
