    Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, which are natural pigments found in plants. These two carotenoids are vital for maintaining good eye health, as they have antioxidant properties that help protect the eyes from harmful blue light and oxidative damage. Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for high-resolution vision. Consuming foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, two common eye conditions that can lead to vision loss, especially in older adults.
    Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin for eye health. For instance, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS2) found that supplementing with lutein and zeaxanthin, combined with other essential nutrients, can reduce the risk of AMD progression by 25-30% (Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 Research Group, 2013). Another study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology showed that a higher dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin is associated with a lower risk of cataract surgery (Liu et al., 2014).
    To incorporate lutein and zeaxanthin into your diet, include the following foods:
    Leafy green vegetables: Kale, spinach, Swiss chard, and collard greens are excellent sources of lutein and zeaxanthin.
    Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower contain moderate amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin.
    Corn: Yellow corn is a good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, with the nutrients concentrated in the corn's yellow pigment.
    Egg yolks: Egg yolks are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, and the fat content in the yolk helps with the absorption of these carotenoids.
    Orange and yellow fruits and vegetables: Orange bell peppers, oranges, mangoes, and papayas also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, albeit in smaller amounts than leafy greens.
    By consuming a balanced diet rich in these foods, you can get enough lutein and zeaxanthin to support your eye health.

    Alpha Lipoic Acid stopped my dry eyes. 600mg a day. Worked right away too.

      spinach, carrots diet + low potent steroids + long term cycosporine 0,5 + tacrolymus 0.03
      healed my keratitis and after a year I got less floaters . better night vision.

    I took my father to his medical appointments.
    The VA gave him lutein but not zeaxanthin. They gave him the anti cancer shot in the eye for MD.
    Kaiser HMO doctors gave him nothing.
    I take both plus astaxanthin.

    I just found out in December last year that i have mild cataracts 😢.
    Ive changed my whole diet and started eating more healthier. More eggs, salads, fruits, etc.. Is there anthing else i can do to slow down the progression of these cataracts?
    I also been wearing sunglasses anytime im outside to protect my eyes!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!❤

    Can taking Lutein+Zeaxanthine supplements be as good (or maybe better?) as getting it from Spinach etc.? Does it have to be in a specific "form" to be bioavailable to the eyes?

      Uhm..is this a trick question? Why would your body find it easier to absorb pills (with tons of additional ingredients) than a bowl of spinach? The less ingredients the better. Your body has to break down each individual component and take what it needs. Obviously you can monitor intake and do both but I don't know why you'd willingly choose the man made version if it's so easy to just go to the grocery store...and i really hope it's not bcuz of "taste" etc. Bcuz we all know that unhealthy foods taste amazing... sacrifices and hard choices is a part of life ijs.

      @@kweenjade01 ummmm...you think all of Spinach is made of just Lutein+Zeaxanthine? It has "additional ingredients" too. If you had bothered to think for a second, you would see that a pill which has *dominantly* just the supplement we need, has "less" chemicals than whatever you think Spinach is made of.
      Reading comprehension is clearly difficult for you, because I specifically asked about bioavailability and note "taste". Some forms of nutrients are more bioavailable than others. It's ignorant to think that "mother nature" optimised everything to just the right level, it has to be studied and requires critical thinking - ah, never mind. Just because something is, mAn MaDe, doesn't automatically make it worse. Everything around you is man made, including the misinformation and pseudo-natural bs you evidently consume on a daily basis.

      not really a trick question; plenty of pple get severe problems from eating a lot of spinach or kale; it can do damage if taken too much. @@kweenjade01
