At one point, Stephen King complimented her writing on Twitter and she thanked him. Someone then asked King to state if he felt trans women are woman and his answer was "Absolutely, trans women are women." She immediately blocked him.

And it's not like King's only hopped on the LGBT support bandwagon recently. One of the inciting acts of evil that reawakens Pennywise in "It" is an anti-gay hate crime. He was an early booster of his openly gay and proudly queer compatriot in horror writing Clive Barker, many of whose most notable works like "In The Hills, The Cities" and "Imajica" either center directly around gay protagonists or explore ideas of sexuality and gender in ways that would have Joey tweeting like the wind. His support of LGBT people is one of the Stephen Kingisms that have come to define him for better or worse, alongside things like his tendency to write about writers and his loved of the creepy child archetype. That Joey didn't expect it of him just shows how little she actually knows of him or his work.
Honestly Joey strikes me as a Garth Marenghi type: if any author has written more books than they've read it's her.

Now, technology has progressed and we are able to change the gender of humans. However, i don’t think that you can compare changing your gender to not being a slave. @@mlucasGrindstoneEthnic purism was, and is, pretty central to the ideals of that crowd. The death eaters wanting to exterminate "mudbloods" and such is a huge driving point of the books.
The issue is that she never really explores why those people believe those things or the systems that exist to teach them those things. It's just sorta an accepted fact that many magical creatures are exactly as intelligent as wizards, but they aren't entitled to the same rights and privileges for some reason. Everywhere you look is another human peer race (all of which have the same, or better, magical abilities as wizards) that is treated like absolute garbage by the systems in place. But, for some reason, even contemplating changing those systems is taboo such that even Hermione, who is the only person shown who has the ability to recognize oppression, doesn't even consider helping the centaurs, veela, goblins, or giants.
A cynic might say that this was on purpose. That this is how Joan views the progressives of the world: taking up banners for those who don't want or need them while ignoring the real issues, or else that it's all just performance to show how kind and noble they are...

J.K. Rowling makes me so unbearably sad and worried for my family. My little sister adores that series. One day she's going to find out about the things Rowling says, and I don't know what scares me more: the idea of my younger sister coming to realize that the author of one of her favorite series is a complete ass or that my sister loves the story and the author so much that she agrees with Rowling.

It might soften the blow if you introduce her to similar series? Or just different creators and writers who are more diversity accepting or more nuanced. Percy Jackson was s very popular recommendation for HP fans and Discworld tends to be very popular too among Fantasy fans. I've also heard Earthsea is very good. All three are some form of fantasy fiction.

Neither of those is necessary. You can like a series while acknowledging problems with the author. I mean, just look at the amount of Lovecraft fans, many of whom are apparently leftist. Maybe try to gradually introduce your sister to the problem? she could learn to dissociate the books from Rowling.

    • @CorwinFound
      @CorwinFound Před 2 měsíci +36

My recommendation would be to introduce the idea of criticism to the books, valid ones. The easiest is over the "voluntary" house elf slavery. It's introduced (fairly unproblematically) in book 2. But by the fourth, there is actual slavery apologia happening. Bring up questions like, "Why would Hermione's friends make fun of her for supporting basic rights? Is there ever a good excuse for slavery?" Etc. Children tend to see the good of books and not really see the bad. Start gently pointing out the inconsistencies so that when she hears the negative crap about Rowling, it's not completely alien that the author who wrote stories with such issues might have some issues of her own.

I'm a Second World War historian, I have done countless hours of research on the Second World War (full disclosure, I focus on the main conflict mostly, but the atmosphere of the time, and the policies of Nazi Germany always comes through into research). She is practicing genocide denialism.
I do not say that lightly, that is exactly what it is.
I have quite literally been to the place where the books were burnt in Berlin (the memorial there is haunting, being a room of empty bookshelves underground with a glass panel in the middle of the ground, unfortunately the glass was foggy when I went, but it was still striking).
The only way she can possibly believe she is right is if she is reading Nazi sources. By that, I mean official documentation from the German State in World War 2. Germany classified trans people with the same classification as homosexuals, as it was thought at the time that they were linked (the main people fighting against that idea had their books on the subject burned in 1933). Trans people in Concentration Camps had the pink triangle, just as any homosexual would.
What she is saying is not only disgusting, and an insult to trans people, but an insult to the subject of history.
Like I said, I have seen the sight of the book burnings, and I have gone to many of the memorials in Berlin, so I find this behaviour particularly abhorrent.

She literally said the Trans community should be treated with respect and deserve to feel safe, but not at the expense of biological women and that we need to have a distinction between biological women and a trans person which - is completely logical. As for her tonality in a lot of her tweets, her tone only changed when she began receiving abuse, death threats and people began turning up at her house trying to intimidate her.. at which point she said screw you 😂 I fully support her, this is a woman who was a victim of domestic abuse and understands the dangers in enabling this confused ideology.

Here's something I read on Reddit:
yeah. This is actually the main issue with trying explain to people she’s a problem.
Her initial statement, way back when, that actually caused the controversy wasn't awful. It was a little old fashioned, and missed the point, but from a place of ignorance. The idea of “We need safe spaces for women and safe spaces for trans people” isn't automatically a problem.
(You could argue transwomen need their own safe space because of the hate and exclusion they can receive in the presence of cis women.)
The problem was what came next. Clear JK was not longer used to anyone questioning her so rather than taking a second to wonder what she might have missed, she doubled down and got worse and worse and worse.
Only, the people who “don't think she is that bad” don't follow the troubles of trans people, don't see the reports of her latest nonsense, they only remember the original tweet and assume this is a case of something being blown out of proportion.

The story was misrepresented in various media where it gave the impression the bigot was the victim so it made sence the she might have just misunderstood. Then she doubled down. If she fell down the hate rabbit hole at that point or was just showing us her true self for the first time I don't know.

    • @ArturGlass.C

Yeah I remember reading her entire message on the bathroom situation. And while it was clear it was transphobic I mostly felt bad for her because she was talking about her own experience feeling unsafe due to being a survivor of assault. Myself being a survivor of assault as well I sympathized and still do with her fear.
There was no doubt it was still rooted in transphobia because only a transphobe would make the parrallel between trans women and male sexual abusers but it screamed as "scared, old and confused".
I do think she deserved the backlash and I think most people tried to genuinely explain to her why it was harmful and while it wasn't "i want trans people to die" it was still transphobia.
And then she lost it. Which has been a pattern of hers forever. That woman has always been incapable of admitting that she's wrong about anything or to think that criticism aren't personal attack.
      So she lost it.
And I think some people blame trans people for her reaction because the way she whined about everything made them think the situation must have been bigger than it was.
Instead of seeing it for what it is which is that she really took it to heart and decided to dismiss an entire community of people rather than try to educate herself on something she clearly knew nothing about.
They assumed we were wrong because they don't know us due to lack of visibility, don't understand either how what she said was transphobic and I think mostly because it's not very intuitive to assume that someone would do what she did and build a goddamn self-righteous crusade based on like nothing.
They really think we've been gunning for her.
Which is crazy to me because the pattern of her making a big deal out of criticism is very visible and has been a thing for as long as she's been on social media. But acknowledging how this is just an exaggeration of that pattern would probably retroactively make them realize all the clapbacks that she ever did even before that were kinda all insane and punching down because she's a billionaire with a huge following and acts and attacks people like randos on the internet are actively throwing her in deathmatch where she has to fight for her life. But they've never been able to see that as concerning behaviour and still saw it in good faith.
And people will always struggle to change their minds if it actually involves a reflection of themselves. I think it's why it's as hard. They're trying to give her and themselves the benefit of the doubt but you can't do that without also denying how she impacts us.

That woman is the inspiration for the novel I'm working on. Seven characters, only 2 of which are white, two trans characters, (a young man and a little girl) an intersex character and an NB character. All of the characters have ethnically appropriate names that do not reference being enslaved.
She is a living example of what not to do.

The xx, xy, xxy, xxx, etc chromosomes dictate hormone washes a person receives. These hormone washes give a person hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. These hormones are what dictate sex; however, they can be changed using HRT, effectively changing a person's sex. If we go by the right's definition as "Man is adult human male" and "Woman is adult human female", trans men would still be men (because trans men are adults, humans, and males) and trans women would still be women (because trans women are adults, humans, and females). Some cis women have xy and some cis men have xx. This also applies to xxy and xxx. Some people are intersex. The hormone washes can give a person the "wrong" hormones, hence why cis women with xy, cis men with xx, and intersex people exist.
All of that information is also just about sex. Sex is very complicated. Sex and gender are infact different and you do not NEED to be a specific sex to be a certain gender. Gender is ALSO very complicated.

For AUDIOBOOKS, listen when you’re doing things like: working out, getting a hair cut/hair done , driving , house chores, etc. Pair it with the more mundane things .
Audible has the bookmark and note function , so if you hear something you can quickly mark it and keep doing whatever you were doing.

Appreciate the fact that you always try to present a nuanced point of view when it comes to these things. She wasn't that bad to begin with, but denying nazi book burnings, that's a whole new low.
