  • Radio light bulbs replacement: 60 to 90 minutes.
Parts: Volvo claims they do not sell the bulb but Honda does. PN: 35505-S84-N01 These bulbs have blue tips on them and show nice and soft white. If you use bulbs that do not have the blue cover on them, they will look yellowish.
The OEM car stereos that can installed in the Volvo 850, S70, V70, 960, S90, V90, and other cars that share the SC series radios like the SC-816 units sound great. Matter of fact, I have yet to hear an after market radio sound better in them. These radios have small light bulbs in them that go out but these bulbs can be replaced pretty easily. You can even replace the bulb in the LCD display.
With a delicate hand you can replace all the bulbs in less than 1 hour and under $15 worth of supplies. You can even purchase all of the tools for under $25. Hope you enjoy. :)

I would just like to add that you ARE able to switch the bulbs in the sealed black sockets, you just haveto use a knife or something pointy to scratch the plastic weld away (it goes away easier than expected). I did this myself today and everything went fine.
Thank you again Robert for your enthusiasm and excellence! Greetings from Sweden

I didn't realize that Volvo used this radio in 2004 cars.
If you have an amp cable, chances are, there is an amp installed. Most were mounted if front of the heater core in the 850 Volvo's. Not sure where they were installed in the C70's. You may have to Google that.
As for the CD changer, chances are, it was removed. They were usually mounted in the trunk, up high between the speakers.
As for the antenna double wire, it was a antenna booster system that Volvo started using in 1998. Helped the radio get better radio reception.
    Thanks for watching the video.

Good instruct vid Mate! Easy & safer fix now. Thanks.
FYI-- They're T3 lamps available on ebay & other sites. A cool young Guy at Honda (Oztralia) told me yes, Honda can sell em for $18 Aud EACH but then "DIDN'T" say they're T3's & can be got them for a couple of $$'s elsewhere.
All Worth it- my old 850 seems like it''s going to last another 10+ years. Lovely ol car.

Dear Robert Thank you again with this repair. You help me the most with providing above Honda Part Number. Having that number I was able to purchase these bulbs locally from Honda for 7.99 CAN each and NO shipping charges. Our local Volvo dealership doesn't stocks them any more. However, some people on eBay told me that they can sell to me such bulbs but they want at least 15 USD for one bulb plus about 25 USD for their shipping to me in Edmonton, Canada. However I couldn't find anywhere bulbs with long wires as you have shown so I could thread them in as you did.
I have found only old Radio Shack part number which is: 227-1092 for 12V Micro lamps with long wires, however our Radio Shack is no longer in business. Thanks a million. S.F.

I removed my radio and took it completely apart but struck one obstacle. But the obstacle was fixed upon watching this video a few more times. This video is priceless. It was the 5 silver locking tabs on the circuit board that I had overlooked. Thanks again for this clip. wonderful!

Robert, solder wick or desoldering pump can be used to remove the solder from the circuit board.
Radio shack used to have these in their stores, not sure now a days.
Put the solder wick in a zip bag after use to keep it from drying out.
Also the short sandwich zip bags are good for keeping the screws in while working on the radio so they don't get knocked or lost.
Thanks for this video, I'll be planning to work on my wife's radio soon.
    All the bulbs are out.

I had LED screen stuck on the word "phone". Fixed that! Then, I replaced bulbs, then LED screen was playing up, then I broke the cable strip. Had enough, so I got another radio from wreckers. I replaced its light globes (thanks to this video) as they none of them worked. After instaling it back into dashboard the damn LED light doesnt work now. Is not my day with radios. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. But thanks again for this video. On a note, when I pulled this latest radio from the wreckers apart, it had a different set-up in side. None of those metal tabs holding the faceplate on. It was about 8 minute screws. Seems to be a better and stronger solution. Thanks again!

I had a heck of a time putting the ribbon back in and I'm still not sure that it's fully in. For you do-it-yourself-ers out there here is the Honda part# for the light bulbs: 35505-S84-N01.

There is another very similar Honda bulb the same base, but a 40 ma rating instead of 50ma like the 35505-S84-N01. Also, the -N01 bulb referenced in this video doesn't have the blue rubber cover when sourced from Honda.
The alternative is 35852-SDA-A01 and has a blue plastic base, and comes with the little blue rubber cover already over the bulb. This -A01 bulb is used as lighting in many Honda/Acura switches. I found out about it when fixing a burned out light bulb on my Acura TSX, and I happened to have purchased some of the -N01 bulbs to repair the radio on our Volvo V90.

I can contribute with some experience that I have gathered since I watched this video. Volvo DO sell lights for the stereo the just don't know it. Part number is 30899172. They are expensive at 9.4 USD a piece (83.75 Swedish krona) but that is with the Swedish 25% sales tax included. I can also tell you that the sc800 stereo uses a different style lights which is soldered on to the board. So they are not interchangeable with lights shown in this video for the sc805. The blue caps in the sc800 lights seams impossible to remove compared to the ones shown in the video.

The previous car owner didn't remember why the sticker gone, it used to stick under the ashtray, some others P80 model stick underside of the fuses cover. It's it possible to bypass it? It is impossible to ask the Volvo dealership since they closed their service here in my country.

I have exactly same model SC816 HU on my 2004 C70.
but when I pulled it out, in addition to the AMP cable, I have CD Changer cable also connected to the back. However, I could not spot any changer in the car unless there is secret place! Also, I wonder where is the Amplifier installed (if it is installed at all)?
In other words, how could I make sure that my car does have AMP and CD changer? or if not, could the car be just pre-wired for future use? Even, if that is true, I would like to know where is the other end of the cables (AMP & CD Changer)?
I have also two antenna connections to the set but I have got only one antenna!!
I'll be happy to have your feedback.
    thanks

There is a difference between FM radios for the US market and for the european market. US is using odd numbers for frequency, Europe is using even numbers. A european radio will not work in the US and vice versa. Of course there are some specialists who can change the behaviour, but buying antoher one for your market will work out cheaper.

Thank you for your detailed videos. I have a 1998 S70 that has been sitting for 4 years and I recently got it up and running again. I have three questions, first of all I got my radio to say CODE, but now when I go to enter my code number one of the selection buttons does not work. Is this something I can fix, or do I need a whole new radio? Second, I need a racket pinion, but cant get one for minute, I have put power steering fluid in the car and it runs great, is it ok to drive it, until I am able to get that fixed? Third question, I don't have the remote to the car, so I lock and unlock manually. The other day, I went to unlock my door and the alarm set, and I could not get it to go off every time I attempted to enter my car.

flaveila Shurn Radio: You have to keep tapping that button until it works. I push it extra hard. I learned a trick, push the button 3 times and then cut the radio off so you don't waste an attempt. If you can't get the button to work, you may have to replace the control panel. Radios at the salvage yard are less than $20. You can get one for parts.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Před 9 lety

flaveila Shurn The steering rack... mine leaks about 4 ounces per 2 weeks or 1,500 miles. So I have been adding fluid for 3-1/2 years. Are you sure you need a rack? Usually leakage is not a reason to replace one. You can try a STOP LEAK like Lucas or Valvoline which may cure your problem. If not, it may need a new seal. At any rate, as long as you can stay ahead of the fluid leak, and it's not leaking out in a day, well, you get my point.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Před 9 lety

flaveila Shurn Alarm, yikes! There is a control box under the dash, almost behind the head light switch that I believe controls all that. You can replace it and should be ok. You may also have a problem with your door latch which is likely the real issue.

Robert, can you let me know how I can get one of the display bulbs? I have already replaced all of the other bulbs with Honda bulbs but don't know how to get the bulb for the display. Mine is definitely burned out and you can't see the display 'in the window at night. Thanks, Ken.

Hey Rob, is this the same procedure for the hu series? I have a hu803 with only one lamp working. Also my a/c control panel is without back lighting.
    Many thanks

Hey Robert, I have a little off topic question for you. Is it possible to install a double din aftermarket radio into a s90 (1998)? I know Clarion 2DBKT Mounting Kit (Item #: 0202DBKT from Crutchfield) is a universal mounting kit. Do you think something like this would work? Thanks!!

Hi Robert! I have an aftermarket unit in my 1994 960, and I ordered an SC-816 for it. The car used to have an SC-810 (cassette only), and the connectors are identical but, will it work with my car? I want a CD player haha.

    Hi Robert
Great videos,...I saw this one and thought,..."okay that's easy",...so I wanted to replace some of the bulbs in the radio of my wife's 850,...she has the SC-801,...but even though it's very similar to the radio in this video,...the front panel is attached in a different way (it doesn't have those latches) and I just can't seem to get how it's attached,...I've tried taken of the two side-screwes, but it still won't come loose,...can you tell me how ?

Did you watch the entire video? It should show both panels?

I think you misunderstood my question, Robert,.....I'm talking about the faceplate of the radio,...the SC-801 doesn't have those latches, so I don't get, what's holding it,....you can see in this link, what I mean :-)s758.photobucket.com/user/tipsysteve-talktalk/Volvo%20SC%20801%20CD%20Radio%20Cassette/story

AwakeDude911 LOL, I believe the Radio Shack pn is 272-1092. You can wire them into the bulb sockets/holders. I usually pull a bunch out of the junk yard and test to see if they are working or not. The ones that are blown, I pull the bulbs and replace them with the ones from RS. I had ordered 100 from a company on the net once, paid about 75 cents each. I also sell them for about $4 each. My local dealer was charging $18 each.

that's the ones for the switches or are the radio and switches the same bulb ?...I pulled one out today so small....!
every switch light and headlight bulb switch was burnt out on my 850 and on my s70 only 2 are working...that was a nice tip now at night I can find the switch without the over head light being turned on..
ipd sell a $10 kit of 10 bulbs (raw) but 10 buck for them seems like HI way robbery !
I bet from china they get a thousand for maybe a buck !!!
never go to the dealer you'll leave there out of money and a small box in your hand....

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Před 10 lety

The radio bulb holders are different, you really can't swap the bulbs out in them. So I get short bulbs from junk yard cars, the headlight switch and the hazard switch. Then I swap bulbs into them and swap over the little blue covers. Have not see the 10 for 10 kit at iPd.
Yes the dealer is know for getting a good price for small parts. lol

C'è un collegamento nella sezione ABOUT del video che vi porterà al sito web Volvo dove è possibile ottenere il codice. Sarà necessario attendere le 2 ore con la radio accesa e auto sulla arrivare alla radio per sbloccare.
