Trout fishing, I caught my biggest trout this year

- I was so excited to catch my biggest trout this year late last week. I was fishing in the Eildon Pondage which is a settling pond below the very large Lake Eildon. I vsught it on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in Orange Spawn colour.
I did not travel to the Eildon to go fishing. I had to go to a funeral in nearby Alexandra, and decided that I would take a small amount of fishing gear with me in case I had time to go fishing after the funeral.

My fishing rod: wildbait.myshopify.com/
My reel: amzn.to/2Xix1Mj

Watching old videos as im going there tomorrow. Your intro bloody hit me hard as running away from funerals to go fishing is me theme
Great video to keep us entertained, thanks Robbie! Alas, i feel it will be a little while before we can head out again. I hope everyone stays safe, and use Robbies videos to be able to imagine how great it will be when all this close down is behind us. Keep strong guys.
Thanks so much Damian. It sure is a tough time for us Victorians mate. I think that I can still go under stage 3 but I may not be able to travel too far to do it. I will be watching closely over the next few days. Stay safe mate.
sorry for your loss Robbie and great catch 👍
Hey mate thanks so much.
@@robbiefishing no probs mate 👍

Thanks so much Glenn. It's sad but it is what it is. I handle this type of thing quite well. I get sad, and I don't like it, but I except.
What a spot and what an awsome fish Robbie awsome afternoon of reflection
Thanks so much Tony. I Couldn't habe found a better spot or a better day to spend an afternoon after a funeral.
GREAT water, great fish!

Beautiful spot mate. Great photos. I’ll have to go there one day! Great vid mate, thanks for sharing
Thanks Mat. Sure is a ripper spot mate.
I doubt that you'll be coming for a while now, we're all going back into lockdown again this week.
I'm a saltwater soul hey.
But your fishing adventures get me frothing big fella.
Thanks so much mate.
Hey Robbie sorry for your loss. Don't forget you still have 41000 mates you can turn to in any time of need.🍻🍻👍👍
Thank you so much Julian. I certainly am a very lucky man.
Caught my best trout at boat ramp near the wall at Eildon about 5 seasons ago ,a just about the same size as the one you caught at Eildon pondage
great trout Robbie
Loved this .. can’t wait till Melbourne is out of restrictions so I can go fishing again 😊
Thanks Whitey, I bet you can't. It must be so tough for you all down there.
Bloody love it always get reved up watching a good catch thank u for the time and effort cheers from grumpy
Hi Grumpy, thank you so much for watching mate.
Any time bud u do great work love all of it new and old cheers from grumpy
Hi mate its Peter from fishbrain
Excellent Brown Trout mate well done, can't wait to go once again when us city slickers can do so again
Hi Peter thanks so much mate. Yeah I know, it's such a sad time for so many people. Tackle store owners, petrol stations, everyone, as well as people not being able to go fishing.
Thankfully i can still fish under stage 3 in regional Victoria but I really feel for my Melbourne counterparts.
That’s an awesome fish Robbie great job mate
Hwy Chip thanks so much champ.
What a fantastic video mate, make me wanna go fish but sadly can’t, but must stay positive. Mask on, lines in, fish on!
Thanks champ. I know, and I doubt that you will be able to go any time soon too.
I won't be surprised if the entire state goes into total lock down soon.
What a awesome trout Robbie, good job. I would love to go trout fishing but there are no local spots with trout. But great video.
Thanks so much mate. What a bugger! Your time will come mate. The sooner this virus crap is over the better for all of us mate.
Woohoo good fish,l fished there and Buxton (meeting of the waters)many times. I'm sure your passed on friend would be smiling for you on that catch. 😁😁😁
Thanks Greg, I am sure that he would too mate.
Cracking video mate. Awesome fish
Thanks so much Brad.
So sorry Robbie for your loss
Thanks so much my friend.
Awesome trout Robbie! Well done! You did well to land that guy
Thanks heaps Mark. I wonder how many people have fallen in the drink off those rocks. LOL
robbiefishing haha I definitely think there would be a few 🤣
Good one mate 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 the moon picture with leaves was awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Cam thanks so much mate. I was very lucky to get them because not long after I started taking photos a thin layer of high cloud appeared from nowhere and made the moon become all fuzzy.
Massive trout well done bro! Beautiful waterway aswell.
Hey Shahil thank you so much mate. Stay safe down there buddy.
beautifully done! Been to Eildon for a family Easter camp many moons ago; Fraser national park, I fished the main lake and caught quite a few small redfin and had a close encounter with a large unknown fish which I suspect it was a cod. Gee that would have to be close to 25 years ago now! (I am 42 next Saturday!)
Thanks Les. Its a beautiful part of the world. Easy to see why it is so popular.
Happy birthday for next week in case i forget. Haha
Absolute ripper of a brown mate...
Im sure your mate is looking down on ya with that awesome catch...
Amazing place to fish 👌
Great video
Hi Dave thank you so much mate. I am sure that he will be too.
Good on you Robbie, thats a great way to respect your mate. Enjoy your chanel and keep the good content coming. Cheers.
Thank you so much for watching mate.
Beautiful fish Robbie, tight lines.
Thanks so much Rick.
I went fishing there about same time last year and it looked like a similar spot, landed my first ever rainbow trout and it went 7.3lb and 67cm - I went absolutely bananas !!
WOW what a monster, well done buddy. My PB is 68cm so I beat you in length, but it would have struggled to be 5lb. Yours would have been a much more impressive fish. Well done.
Hey Robbie good on ya mate! Bloody ripper of a fish well done.👍
Hey David thanks so much mate.
STONKA mate 👍🐟👌
Thanks mate.
Alright!!! Awsome trout !!!!
Thanks Tommy. I was stoked to catch it. I am glad I got to go when I did, we are about to go into some serious lockdown here in Victoria. again!!
Top fish Robbie. R.I.P. For your mate.
Thanks so much mate.
Robbie your a legend. Can't fish stuck in lockdown. Not that bad life's ok still kick'n but your videos make it better. Cheers!
Thanks so much Andrew. Yep, it's a hard time mate but it is what it is. At this stage I think I can still fish after the regional Victoria lockdown on Wednesday but I may have to stay local. If I can go I will go, but if I can't go I will just do the best I can with what I have.
Sorry to hear about your mate. Another top video.
Thank you so much Wayne.
Well done Robbie awesome fish mate
Thanks so much Jaron. 👍👍
Magnificent Robbie.
Thank you so much Peter.
Beautiful fish
Thanks heaps mate.
good job Robbie my biggest brown trout was a 38 centimetre wild brown trout in the gellibrand river
Thanks Timbo, WOW Thats a lovely fish mate. Well done.
I have now watched this vid 4 times hasn’t got old
hahaha Thanks so much champion.
What a magnificent brown trout, congratulations! He certainly had been eating well lol. I will have to make the drive over there someday, I've never been there
Thanks mate. Its a beautiful place, I don't go there often enough. I was hoping to go there soon but those plans just hit big hurdle. LOL
@@robbiefishing I know we're still allowed to go fishing, I just don't know if we're allowed to travel to do it. My gut says no but I'm waiting for clarification
@@RKJFishing You'll be right! WE won't be able to go anywhere down south!
Be ex brood stock, so is MEANT to be taken! Robbie should have taken it! It's DONE its job!
@@Urbanfisho Yeah I know, but I didn't have an eski or ice with me.
Well done. I've missed being able to go to the Pondage this year with my mate due to Covid. There are some stonking big trout in there. Maybe the less fishing pressure this year will be good in the long run for the health of the fish stocks ...
Thanks Matt, I really hope so mate. It really is a hard time for so many of us isn't it.
Another awesome video Robbie that was a stonka of a Trout, might have to organise a trip there
Thanks so much mate. Its a ripper spot!!
Awesome catch Robbie and nicely juggled for the landing. I think we all need to pitch in and buy you a landing net!!! Although, might ruin some of the entertainment value. Good luck with the lockdowns mate. Cheers. PP
Haha thanks so much mate. Yeah in just toting with the idea of buying some kind of small net. LOL
wow thats a big one
Wicked brown mate, trout are quiet the performance fish great to catch👍
Thanks Eck. They sure are, they look awesome when they jump out of the water. From my experience, rainbow trout tend to jump higher than brown trout.
Good vid and condolences for your loss mate.....
Thank you so much mate.
awesome catch robbie! my pb trout atm is roughly around 3lb haha must have been fun fighting it on the light tackle. the photograph of the moon looks amazing too
Thanks so much mate. WOW 3lb is awesome. My PB is 68cm, but it wasn't overly fat. I reckon it was around 5lb. Just guessing, I reckon this one was probably a bit under 2lb. Not a monster but the biggest that I have caught for quite some time.
@@robbiefishing its surprising how long trout can be and also very skinny.
Hey You. Cracking Fish! Looked very healthy
Thanks Trevor, It was very health, perhaps even a little over weight. LOL
Good on you mate, I'm sure your friend would be chuffed with how you honoured him! Man I've spent some time at that Pondage for no luck haha...the Goulburn below it always delivers though :)
Thanks mate. It sure is a ripper of a spot.
sensational fish robbie!
Thanks so much mate.
Cheers Robbie.
Thanks for watching Deb. 👍🏻
Beautiful fish mate , that’s my second home , I’m up there every weekend during the open season . Looking forward to getting through all the virus crap and getting back up there in the not too distant future.
Thanks heals Dusan. Easy to see why mate, gods country.
Nice one Rob.
Thanks heaps mate.
Nice catch!
Thanks so much Peter.
Well done Robbie, great video and a lovely fish - good to see your licence fees at work! Pity I can't say the same about SA .....
Thanks so much Frank. Yeah SA is dragging the chain a bit with fisheries management thats for sure.
Finally got one of those beautiful Stradics ohhhh how good are they robbie brought one the other day and so clean and smooooooth❤️👍🏼
Oh wait no spoke to soon u just said the name of the reel hahahah
Hey buddy I have 3 ci4 steadies in my shed. Actually... make that 2. I sent one to a friend.
Stracs are great, but this Piscifun reel is $85. 30% of the price for 95% of the quality.
@@robbiefishing Ha, great Robbie, I love that you aren't just spruiking sponsored gear all the time. How many other fishing journos would give an ebay Chinese brand reel a go, much less be honest about how good it is?? Keeping it reel!! :-) PP
Good work mate
Thanks mate. 👍👍
Hope you're feeling well robbie 👍
Thanks champ. I am well thanks mate. Theres new lockdowns coming starting in 2 days and I'm not sure if I will be able to go fishing or not.
@@robbiefishing I live in pakenham and were weren't allowed to go fishing since 6 so disappointing but I understand why stay safe robbie 👍
Nice job nice fish
Thanks so much Anthony.
Sorry to hear about your mate he sure put on a beauty of an arvo for you there gorgeous spot there around the pond see in the no fish zone below the pondage spill I've seen some 10-12 pounders by the dozen there I've even caught a couple 200meters down stream in the fishing zone the pellet pigs always end up in that area for a good mile or so below the wall great for the kids there .
Hey James thanks for the red hot tip buddy. My mate Waybe caught a 5 pounder down there back in the 1990s. It's always been a hot spot that one mate.
Good viewing them when the sun is high you pick up a big shadow move then it appears and then another and another you can waist a good hour there viewing them some days at the spill from the pond
Great catch you are the man. Landing net you dont need one of them. LOL.
Hahaha thanks Vincent. Where there's a will there's a way. LOL How is your area with covid? Our second wave is running rampany and we are now heading into another lockdown. This time a harsher one. Im hoping that "local" fishing is still allowed.
@@robbiefishing Hi Robbie. At the moment things aren't to bad. But all the english and americans are all coming to kerry for there holidays. Last weekend i was down in kerry and didnt see one person wearing a mask. Yesterday i came down again and the place is full of tourists but theres a few wearing masks. I wouldn't be surprised what happens next its a mad world. A mad bloody world and thats coming from tgje mad fisherman. You can only laugh or else you will cry.
Cracking trout Robbie! Fat little bugger too! Stay safe mate
Thanks so much mate.
I caught my first fish in a very long time mate great vid like all yours
Thanks so much Sam, and well done on your fish buddy.
robbiefishing thanks mate
An interesting catch Robbie. You spoke of the regular hatchery releases which are well known and pretty much identifiable as their tails are usually quite worn - especially the bigger ones and often to a significant degree.
If I'm not mistaken, that fish had a very full tail - an oddity for The Pondage as there is no natural recruitment in there.
I'm thinking that you caught a rather special fish there mate. Though I wont take you to task for not doing it with a fly. Ha ha ha! Be well, mate.
Hahaha thanks so much Bill. I enjoy fly fishing, and could do it off the wall or the pontoon nut theres no way I could cast a fly under those trees mate. LOL
Nice Trout Robbie
Thanks mate.
@@robbiefishing No wackis mate
Hi Robbie Great video mate what a great fish I went back to the basin today and we caught three redies the first was 36 cm and the second was 29 andand the third was 10 cm hahaha lol
Sorry for spelling the second was 29 cm and the third one was around 8 cm hahaha lol all caught on a pink ZMan 2.5 inch grub
WOW Joshy well done mate. We better not tell Rohan from RKJ fishing because when him and I went over we only caught 1 tiny one. LOL
Need to head back out to Eildon Pondage again Robbie to try get an upgrade!
I do need to for sure.
Nice brown trout
Thanks heaps Tim.
Cracking fish mate.
Really nice looking thick brown.
Wasn't too far off on the colour guess haha..
Thanks mate, haha You were all over it.
@@robbiefishing Hahahaha
Looks really amazing bring on September for me I'll be down in the lake Eildon getting the yellow belly best time of the year to get them 👌
Thanks Chris. I'm really looking forward to it too mate.
Looks like that brown was one of the wild ones that come over the spill way from the lake didnt have snipped fins
Hey James, yeah I noticed the fins. Who knows! Either way, I have never been so happy to feel a fish hit my lure as I was when this one hit. It's been a while!
I am not sure Robbie, was it a “Pondage” you were fishin mate 👍
I couldn’t help my self brother 🤣🤣
Keep up the good work mate 👍
Haha thanks heaps mate. Its called the Eildon Pondage but im not sire if that is exactly what it is. LOL
Best lures I found for the pondage if golden croc lures in gold and silver and tassie devils in clown couler
Great video man, really enjoy your fishing content but I reckon you should carry a net for situations like that. Makes it so much easier for both you and the fish! Damm that was fish fat though
Thanks so much mate. Haha yeah I was actually looking at a landing net today. LOL
robbiefishing fishermen’s best friend I call it lol
Great catch Robbie! That trout is massive! Quick question.. what rod did u use in this video? Ive tried using the link you shared but it lead me to lures. As always, keep up the great work and informative videos, Ive learned a lot from them 👍
Hi Juan thanks so much mate. It is a Wildbait rod, from the same online store as those lures. I didnt look at the store when I shared the link. To be honest, i just have a template of links so that i can copy and paste to speed things up.
Pete from Wildbait was talking at one point about discontinuing the rods, so maybe they're no longer available, I am honestly not sure sorry mate.
Beauty brown.
Thanks mate.
Well Did!
Thanks heaps mate.
Hey Robbie what size strike tiger Nimph do you use and favourite coulours as I am thinking of buying some
nice video Robbie that trout was realy fat
Thanks Harrison, wasn't it ever!
bloody ripper robbie
Thanks so much Michale.
Robbie, looks like a great place to visit, If I get to go over there, I will try to go. The moon, I have never had any success taking photos of the moon. I have a Pentax K10 D, with a tele lens and an Olympus OM-D EM-5 with a 42mm lens. Tried various manual settings, on a tripod. Any suggestions?
Hi Keith, believe it or not the moon is really easy to pgotograph once you know how.
Set the camera to manual, then wind the light meter off the dial to make it underexposed. Because the moon is so bright, and the outside edged of the photo are black, a correctly exposed photo will overexpose the moon.
Definitely use a telephoto lens. The closer you can get the better. Try underexposing the photo and see how that goes Keith. 👍👍
sorry about your friend Robbie
I fish there but a bit further from that spot. I’m pretty sure.
Nice 1 Robbie, once more unto the breach!
I'm guessing you country folk are NOT happy having to go back into S3 lock down, with no cases of Covid whatsoever!
My country cousins in the Mallee will NOT be happy!
Thanks mate. Im not upset. If I can go fishing I will, and I will continue to film but if I cant then I am happy to stay home.
We have no active cases here, but with people moving around so much its only a matter of time until it gets here and then spreads like wild fire.
@@robbiefishing This is true!
Hey, Robbie love your videos what lb leader do you use for trout, redfin and yelling belly
Thanks mate. I do not use any leader buddy. With trout I use straight 4lb mono.
Alright thanks
Im sure your mate that passed was wishing you luck from up above buet fish
Thanks mate. He was an amazing man and I reckon he may have had a chat to the fishing gods for me.
I love ya work but may I ask why you don’t use a net
Thanks mate, i do when I am varp fishing. Haha It is less to carry when I am walking. I like to keep my fishing as simple as possible.
robbiefishing ya should get a small fold up one, I’ve had mine for years I use a pouch on a belt to carry it
What fish are in that lake
Hi Sam mostly trout, and some very big ones. I am unsure about carp. I think there's a few redfin in there too.
robbiefishing so no natives
Did you go through yea
No mate, I came down from the north of the state so went through Bonnie Doon and Alexandra.
I'm tipping your fishing is going to suffer over the next six weeks mate. F@$# COVID!
Scratch that Robbie. I just read that we can go fishing.
I have a channel two
