- The Jetta has been in VW's lineup for many years and to this day is brings German compact car style & value. Adding GLI to the name of the Jetta brings extra performance from the Golf GTI. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that pumps out 228HP & is mated to a 7-speed DCT transmission. On the outside you will discover unique touches on the GLI, from front fascia, wheels, and full LED lighting. On the inside you will be greeted by an upscale interior with higher end materials, and digital gauge cluster. Is the VW Jetta GLI a BETTER sport sedan than a 2022 Honda Civic Si?

Geez you 2 get around! Thank you Joe n Lauren for putting on such a great show!!!Every episode is a highlight of the day. Love from Australia!
The GLI is looking a lot better since VW put the wonky all touch interior in the GTI
Amen, brother. The GLI buttons are beautiful.
Joe and Lori, grinding out their content nearly every...single...day. You're appreciated!
Great work ethic.
Whoa... @ 4:36 major curb grindage already/!?! đ€Šââïž
The hardest working couple on CZcams, keep them videos coming Raiti's!
I think even in regular trim the Jetta has a clean sedate look that works well. Great review btw! Thanks
Thank you for another fantastic review Mr. Raiti! Before I buy any car I will check to see what you have to say about it. đđŸ!
Letâs get Joe to 1 million subs so he can take a vacation
Just picked up a 2021 GLI last weekend. Loving it so far.
I would love to go through all of Raitiâs Rides vids and see if Joe has mentioned every available food item known to man. Greatest available space /size comparisons known to man!!!
These cars are so enjoyable to drive. Their so much fun. I had a 2014 gli 6 speed Manuel. Slapped a intake and blow off valve and I fell in love with it even more. Unfortunately, it got totaled by a drunk driver đ.
That red really pops. Itâs a really vivid color!
wow, never ever looked at jettas before but this one is high key looking very đ„đ„
There is the refresh 2022 ready:)!

Great camera work on all of the reviews!
Lori working her magic!
Pretty red color for the Jetta makes it look sportier and bold.
I love it my boy Joe keep up the work and I love the video lot đŻ
Raitis great videos, keep up the hustle
What a fantastic review. I love that car.
I have exactly the same car⊠love this as my daily driver.
I have this same exact car just with different rims! I love this car, as a young 24 Y/O grinding. My next dream car is and Audi Rs3. Great entry sports car in the Audi/VW family. Imo better than the competitors as Iâve had a civic and accord.
Honda engine is more durable and reliable
Nope
InLove my 2012 autobahn gli. Literally have everything from red stitching to touch screen bluetooth to the sunroof, DEF luxury and better. Keeping this one even when I get the brand new one lmao.

Hi Joe!...love your videos. It'll be nicer if you can show how the audio system sounds in different trims (for all cars!).
That's a bad idea. You're hearing the sound system through whatever mic he chooses, through CZcams compression, through your speakers. It'll never be an accurate translation
I agree 100%, but it would be nice to talk about the audio systems and rate them in my opinion.
Thank you Joe!
GLI Yes
Integra Hell No
Great Job again
Red fahrvergnugen ! Thanks Joe and LoriâŠâŠ..for the GLI education. I would go with Honda đ
Joe is rocking some new grey runners. đ€
I bought the Jetta GLI with a manual, and i love it. Better deal than civic si, and faster too. No baloney with any markups which the Honda dealers were doing.
That is really awesome to hear!
Every Gli i owned brought me fun and joy, not a perfect car, but pretty close to it for an everyday driver. Best fuel economy on the highway i ever got and the seats in my 2006 were the most comfortable seats i ever sat on, still miss them. That start/stop engine feature is THE most annoying thing i ever encountered in the car, maybe first gen. lane assist in Kia's which almost killed me a couple of times gets the #1. I can see why people would get the Si, 2022 model really took a big step towards being a everything done right.
This is one of the most enjoyable car review channels on youtubeđđđ
The 2022 was one of the biggest disappointment for the SI. It now costs 27k for 205 Hp? Thatâs the most ridiculous car ever
@@martintintin7729 There are no cheap cars anymore
@@alexcoyg3281 but there are cars that offer a lot more for their money. Such as this GLI. The SI is just too much of an disappointment. The GLI can be tuned for 500 to hang with the likes of the S3, type R, for 2k u can run with m3 etc. the SI needs an engine upgrade before ever being taken serious
Sure looks better imo.. great review Joe đ
This is my dream sedan! Nice review Joe.
You are the man Jeremiah!
Love my 2020 GLI autobahn black package in black ,nice and switch out tire to Good year eagle, thx joe yea nice..
Love my 2020 Jetta GLI.
I had a 2016 gli great car fun to drive the new generation a lot better with the limited slip diff my 2016 was open diff it had the fender sound system that was good fun cars but when they get older they get expensive to repair.
I just subscribed!! Love the content

Here a run down on the 1984 GLI only available from Nov 1983 to Feb 1984. Came in Sedan or Coupe(Canada) available in 5 colours and 2 interior options. Mars Red, Atlas Grey and Black (Sedan only) with interior 46 Black Leatherette with Grey Velour. or Alpine white and Diamond Silver with interior 47 Blue Leatherette with Grey Velour. Only 1800 were built, 493 of them Canadian 2 doors. 5 of them use for the 1984 North American Auto show, all were 2 doors but coded as American 4 doors and hell 1000 units before given Vin numbers. 2x Alpine White x1 Diamond Silver 1x Mars Red and 1x Atlas Grey. James R Fuller was put in place f VW of America in 1980s. He was placed head of Porsche and Audi then in 82 VW, where he brought us the GTI and GLI. He was what saved VW in America, many dealerships were about to close.
This car looks good!
One key thing ALL cars need for me to buy is dials for hvac and radio control.
Yes, I'd take this over the Honda. I have owned 3 VW Jetta GLi's over the past 20 years. Each one of them was very good. This red color is exceptional. Really pops with the black trim. Great review Joe. This car would even be better if it was Made in Germany and AWD. But its still better than a Civic, even if the Civic is more reliable long term.
The cost of maintenance and reliability just does not do it for me.
I miss my GLI. My mom couldn't get out of the bucket seats. :-(
@@Christusolus Maintenance? VW provides free maintenance for first two years. After that its basically oil changes and brake pads until 60k. The VW products are very inexpensive to keep on the road.
@@Christusolus VW has great warranty and Iâve owned two jettas and they are very reliable. Once a year maintenance
@footballcoreano Can your volkswagen hit 900,000 miles?
Looks like they put 2 USB-C ports inside the center armrest storage area. Located on the inside-back-upper portion of the storage area. And notches in the side for your phone charging cable to pass-through.
I like this idea because it protects the plug-end of your cable from getting kicked or bent-like it would be if the ports were located in the legacy location.
Also, having it hidden in the center armrest, this lessens the chance of back seat passengers from getting spilt drinks and Twinkie crumbs ruining the USB-C port.
Obviously it would shorten your charge cable a little-just use a longer cableâŠand donât pull on it when itâs plugged in.
Someone probably makes a right-angle USB-C plug. That would be a good cable T for this location.
Iâm totally seeing this car as a great thing like a cheaper version of the Audi S4
Yes
A4
No way. The S4 is AWD the GLI is FWD. The S4 pumps out 120 more horse power.
Its more like a cheaper version of the S3
@@coolsahib oh yeah it actually makes sense now
I have the same car. Missing my mk 6.5 , but this is more practical.
I use to live just 1-2 miles from where they are test driving. That road is usually dead after 8pm and the 4 lane straight away perfect to let loose. That aside, I'm not a fan of the latest exterior design of the Jetta. I own a Mk6 GLI and it's been enjoyable to have. The refinements in VW definitely stand out above the Hondas I've driven.
Digging those blacked out rims Joe!!!
Brake cooling ducts is good idea just use that drill make some holes it also can be aero dynamic
We have ađjettađtdi 2006 with only 130000 miles and we still love theđcarđ

A different set of tires (not the stock hancook) did a lot for me in terms of communication with the road and a lot less wheel spin.
I hear this all the time. Why didnât they go with Perillis or however u spell it
My first car was a 1988 Jetta GLI. The smoothest hand crank windows and sunroof. Jetta beats the Civic with power, the DSG and the option to upgrade the power with APR and the Golf R Is38 turbo upgrade, the newer SIâs arenât tuner friendly. Thank you Joe and Lori!
They are extremely tuner friendly, just the clutch needs replacing, and the 1.5 cannot compete with a 2.0 liter in the VW in regards to power and straightline acceleration, everything else is pretty much the same.
Both are great on the track si being light with a real helical Las versus electronic faux one lighter weight superb shifter rev match.
It's pretty good but lost it's adjustable suspension.
When it comes to maintenance and reliability?
They had a GLI back then? I thought they called them a VR6 (I know thatâs the engine). I just donât rememberâŠit was long ago
Here for the Twizzlers. đ This car always had nice lines.
I have a Volkswagen Jetta 2012 and put 130,000 miles and never had a light on my panel never had a problem it was a good car but it was noisy you can hear the road noise and engine I had the basic I donât think it had insulation, that Jetta GLI got me thinking đ€
Love my new 2021 GLI Autobahn with 6 speed manual.
If Lori isn't using a camera stabilizer, she's got the most stable hands/arms/shoulders everđ
Joe, will you review the Cadillac CT5 Blackwing by any chance? Not that most of us can afford it, but they made both an automatic and a manual transmission. It's got a staggering 668 HP turbo-charged engine assembled by hand. A missile! In the stick shift version, you can switch gears without letting off the gas pedal! (Personally never heard of such a thing).
Great review! I for one would get the Si instead of the GLI. For one,, it's approximately $5000 cheaper at $28,340 (assuming the stealerships aren't gonna mark it up)đ
As a 2012 GLI owner, I might be a little biased but these cars are very great for the value they bring. Yeah they're not as reliable as Hondas, (trust me I know lol. my whole family drives Honda's except me. I wanted to try something different.) but as long as you don't problems linger for too long they will never let you down. Improper maintenance is what kills these cars for the most part.
Also random thing I wanna add, I got my car in 2019. I actually got my car because I really liked my dad's 2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5T and performance wise they were very similar. I definitely didn't have Accord Sport money but the GLI definitely fit my budget and the rest is history.
My only advice though is if you do buy this car, be prepared for any problems that may arise, don't let the problem persists too long. My car had a few problems before I bought it that I knew nothing about. Luckily I still had a lot of money saved that I could afford the repairs but looking back I wish I saw those problems first and maybe I would've gotten a different one without the same issues.
i have a 2019 SEL premium and so far ZERO issues. i love the car great value!
I have a 2020 SEL Premium the only issue I have is the oil issue and master techs say itâs because it sat for like a year on the lot. Sometimes it take many oil changes to Fix it . Just like if someone smashes your windows it takes a long time to clean all of the tiny glass.
@@neubauerjoseph man this sounds annoying i hope it gets fixed soon!
@@juan.alvrdo Just got a email from VW and they said they would ether put a new engine or buy back my car and offer me a another VW.
So they aren't reliable?
The interior of the Civic Si is brand new and looks nicer, while the Jetta still inherits a lot of VW design years ago (back in 2012 when the Golf VII first debuted in Europe).
Yup it looks abit old school
@@sha22276 nothing wrong with old school never fix what's not broken
Interior is nicer yet exterior and engine and trans and everything else in that SI looks horrible. This car is without the doubt the better option. I mean seriously a soulless 1.5 vs a 2.0 underrated that easily gains 100HP from a single ecu flash tune

Wow saw the thumbnail & thought this was the new Honda Civic
Hey Lori and Joe thx again for the review. Don't you think it's time for a new VW Polo G40?
Top-drawer review, Joe & Lory
Yes I had Hondas all my life, switched to volkswagen 3 years ago, best decision I've made, I currently have a 2022 vw jetta gli
He hey hey Zonkman, love your video on this VW Jetta but here's a question for you that'll blow your mind. What if there was a perfect vehicle in the car industry, with no mistakes, made how would you describe it and why?
Such a thing isn't even theoretically possible. Every decision made has a trade off: More power or better MPG? More space/utility or easier to maneuver/park? The key is to find the vehicle that fits one's needs given their current lifestyle. That's what makes cars like the Si and GLI so good for me--I'm old enough to need the practicality of a sedan which gets good MPG and is easy to live with on the daily, but I still like to have a little fun.
The new Si gets over 40MPG, but the GLI has more power and comes with an automatic transmission. Some may value better MPG for their long commutes, others may rarely drive and would prefer more power. Some may prefer shifting their own gears, but others value the practicality and ease of use of an automatic. Determining which car to get all comes down to balancing an ever-evolving list of wants and needs.
Thanks.
Looks so nice , props to VW for not ruining their sport sedan. Unlike Honda , Acura , Subaru, Nissan
Why even mention Nissan?đ The Sentra is arguably amongst the most useless in the compact sedan segment. Not even close to comparable to this in performance⊠or price really.đ©đ đđ
â@@thatinformativeguyfacts the Sentra doesn't even have a sport/performance variant unlike Honda, Acura, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia
Nice looking sedan here! Unfortunately, this isnât sold in Europe. Iâm also pleasantly surprised that this has actual exhaust pipes. The VW Group have been obsessed with fake tailpipes for a while now.

Volkswagen over the competition anyday!
Great car! I have a 19 GLI and really enjoy it. A quick ECU tune and some other mods and this car will really move. The wheel spin is real. VW put some really crappy Hancook tires on the GLI. Highly recommend switching them to Michelin PS4s and upgrading the engine mounts. Really minimizes that spin and improves your launches. I havenât checked out the new Civic SI but compared to the current one this GLI is a no brainer in my opinion.
Itâs very hard to justify the cost of the SI for the power they are giving it. I love Honda but with Mazda, VW, and others stepping up the game, the SI kinda getting left behind
How much is it to upgrade engine mounts?
@@danr154 depends somewhat. I did the stage 2 engine mount kit from BFI and it was about $650. I did the install myself though.
Hey also just Stage Tune 1 my 19 GLI was wondering what brakes, break pads, and rotors should I look into ?
@@TheMojoRiku honestly the brakes on the GLI are pretty good. They came from the MK7 Golf R. I havenât replaced mine yet because I only have 20k miles on my car. Perhaps when the pads need replaced Iâll think about upgrading the rotors, but itâs not a high priority. If I was tracking my car every other weekend I would absolutely address the brakes, but I donât. So, the OEM system works fine for meâŠfor now.
I see lots of options when searching online. Check out some of the forums and see what they say. There are also several MK7 GLI Facebook groups where you can ask folks about brakes and just about any other topic.
New Civics looks like they took some styling cue from the Jetta, red and black looks good
Also Joe we need the last Accord coupe V6 with a manual. A unicorn
With a apr tune ( ecu and tcu ) you'll be making crazy power....
Like the car combinient
100% better than the SI, a stage 1 IE flash tune adds so much power too and then you throw a nice intake and exhaust and they're a blast to drive
I was hesitant to buy my brand new 2014 Jetta GLI Autobahn 6 speed. I had never owned a VW. I traded my Subaru in for it. I absolutely loved my GLI! The only thing is that it took me a while to realize the car was super fast, but lacked the AWD. Thatâs where the R golf comes in. Went to buy one late 2021âŠ.. couldnât find one at any dealers, so I went to a WRX. The only standard, AWD available under the circumstances. SUCKS!!! VW standard transmissions still blow them out of the water. Actually, everything VW/Audi blows them out of the waterâŠ.. KEEP STANDARDS ALIVE with Audi/VW!
Well shit, I was literally eating a twinkie... my bad. I love this refresh, other than the fake vents and no fog lights.... They nailed it.

Youâre my favorite car reviewer. Where do I put the M&Ms?
The exterior design is still growing on me but thereâs no denying that the performance is darn near unmatched in its segment. Interior is great too.
This is very true!
So was anyone actually eating a Twinkie when Joe made that comment? lol. This is a great looking car, clean lines and not overdone...looks like a compact sedan from early 2010's.
Seats đș look awesome đ đ
Itâs hard to beat the Si for the price range, the amount of features you get in Canada is unmatched, heated wheel, front and rear heated seats, wireless charging, wireless car play, dual zone climate control, navigation, heated mirrors I donât think you can beat that for 33k
This is so very true for sure!
The issue is these cars arenât advertised as who has more features these cars are advertised as daily performance sedan and the GLI does a whole lot better
Job at performance. Also the AUTOBHAN edition has more features
I didnât buy the 2022 Civic Si here in America because we didnât get all those features as it did in Canada. 4 days ago I bought a 2019 Civic Si instead.
Unfortunately no Automatic transmission option, canât buy it for a daily drive
The si cost more in Canada than the GLI . I would pick the GLI. More value
Honda Civic Si for sure. Although, Iâm not too sure about the 2022 release because of all the features Canada was given that are missing here in America
Ehhhh.....I got to zonk the twizzler twist, the cherry pull n peel are the best đ
Unitronic tunes these motors for under $800 and $800 for a downpipe gets you 340 hp and 370 tq. These cars are huge inside btw.
Nice car coming from a Civic Si owner
The most important part of this test was your comparison of the communication through the wheel during the drive with the Si. I like this car a lot. But, it is 5k more than the 2022 Si. I think I have my answer.
This 5-year-old design is probably worth 5k less than Si.
Every SI is about 4K-6k mark up right now.
@@closg9309 it's just a crazy market recently... I would not consider buying a car unless it's 130% necessary.
Do a video on the 2020-2021 GTI?
No more base trim GLI, only Autobahn trim prices me out of this car. Hope you get a review of the new Jetta (preferably the sport trim) soon. That model would probably be more in my price range. In response to your remark about Florida drivers; I couldn't agree more. As far as the civic SI comparison, I think the GLI fights in a slightly higher weight class so to speak. Much more powerful. At this point, this car has you over $32k. At that price, maybe just hold out for the Hyundai Elantra N. For a bit more $, get a lot more performance.
This GLI generation is just excellent... The only way to have a better car is to spend more.
