Great review. It would be nice if you tested a DSG GTI 0-60. Some sources claim 5.1 seconds for that time. Also, as you drove Kona N, how does it compare with GTI. Yes, Kona N is in slightly different class but by the looks and parameters it should directly compete with GTI and Golf R.

Absolutely agree - I've got one and I seriously doubted my purchase during the first couple of hours, but after a couple of days the buttons (lack of) are absolutely no big deal whatsoever - especially if you program your own shortcuts for things you find essential. It's just like getting a new phone. However, almost everything else is better in this version in terms of driving experience. I have the EU spec so it's not power-restricted like the US version and so 0-60 is 5 secs (or just under in the real world) rather than 6.3, so not sure why there is such a big difference between the EU model and the US model - That's actually a real shame that you get a watered down version and don't get to experience the normal GTI experience that makes this car so popular in Europe! I suppose it's down to the emissions restrictions. Anyhoo the EU spec model that I'm familiar with is just fab!

VW's differential will only lock up when the computer tells it to. It is not a fake LSD that used the brakes, it's an actual mechanical limited slip differential. VW and it's dealers are not very successful in the USA because they play price games and put ridiculous MSRP prices on their models and then have to discount them greatly later on in the year because they did not sell. Only in the N Virginia area do they seem available at reasonable prices all year. No reason a GTI shouldn't sell for $25k-$30k base to top end and the resale value is terrible usually because of glitchy electronics which are unnecessary to begin with. Go back to control knobs, get rid of Auto Stop/Start, go back to a manual hand brake and eliminate unnecessary switches from the steering wheel, and give us normal speedo/tach layout. It works for Porsche and it would work for the GTI and would make it more reliable and increase resale and customer satisfaction.

I need a compact. Not just one labeled as such. Or, one that fits the new definition of "compact" after most car brands (including VW) have utterly decimated the true compact car class in America during the last few years. Yes, you do expect a slight difference in length when discussing a car model available as either a hatchback or a sedan. But not 17 inches! If anything, it's clear now that the GTI and the GLI are two very different cars. The GLI is not a GTI with a trunk. As much as I enjoy the security of a lockable trunk, I'm not even considering the GLI as an option for my next car. But the GTI is on my short-list.

Turbo's are harder to launch. In my 2.0L NA Civic, I'll ride the clutch while the fronts are struggling for traction and then do the fast drop and floor it once momentum is sufficient. Stupid easy to do when the car's your daily. Result, is no one is able to get the drop on you at the lights. That initial power at 1000rpm is priceless when it's enough to brake lose my 215/55/16 dedicated summer tires. The 13lb RPF1 rims and premium fuel also helps. Given those launches, your left foot needs to develop some finesse and it's ok to ride the clutch a bit when you mean business.

Just saw a new GTI in white (with black wheels) in SE trim at a dealership yesterday afternoon. Looks very sharp inside and out. The screens look amazing but I can see why people would be turned off by the buttons, or lack thereof. Still, it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me. I didn’t drive the car, and won’t unless I get serious about buying one.
The GLI is cheap by comparison, but I think it’s a good value. But the design is really starting to seem dated, as it looks mostly like the same Jetta VW has made for several years.

Looks are subjective but in my opinion both the GLI and the Elantra N are some of the ugliest sedans on the market. I’d go with a GTI instead, looks good and has better materials than a GLI. It depends what you’re looking for, if you’re looking for performance the Elantra N would be better since it’s DCT and engine setup is more powerful than the GLI. If you’re looking for something with more features and a better overall interior then GLI would definitely be better. But in your case I think a GLI would be better for you since you mentioned that you didn’t like Hyundai left features out.

My current car is a normal economy car but in 10 years 110k miles only has needed oil changes and just recently a 2nd battery that's it. If this is possible in the GTI i'm sold.

Same here with me and my 2006 Mazda3 sedan with a manual. 17 years of trouble-free driving. General maintenance only. Oil, filters, battery, tires, never had to go back to the shop for repairs. I am now shopping for a new 2023 Mazda H/B with a manual but I have considered the GTI and the Civic SI. And the Civic Sport Touring, but I favor the Mazda still because it has a naturally aspirated motor that I believe will be more dependable to own than any turbo-assisted motor. And the interior is definitely better than the rest for my needs. But, I do wish I could still get the manual in a Mazda3 sedan!

Good video as always. Ive watched so many comparisons and reviews of these cars, and factoring in price vs features the GLI is a no brainer winner IMO. Unless you just have to have a hatchback and/or hate sedans, the 2022 GLI is better in almost every way. The new system interface in the GTI is a major problem that too many people overlook because "it drives great". Again, just my opinion but until VW fixes the TERRIBLE interface with the GTI or lowers the price by about $8000 the decision should be between the 2022 GLI and a used MK7.5 GTI.

Also (and this is a big one!!!!) why is the US spec car so power-restricted? Is that because of the emission laws?? The proper EU spec GTI 0-60 time is 5 secs (or just under in the real world) rather than the US version's paltry 6.3 secs! That's a HUGE difference!! And I feel that people buying the US spec model are just NOT getting the proper GTI experience that makes this car so popular and desirable in Europe.
