The Last Of Us Part 1 Recap
Ok in order to fully understand the storyline and general meaning behind the series, we have to travel back to the first game and talk about the thematic elements of that. The Last Of Us Part 1 was very much about breaking a cycle and this was shown predominantly through the eyes of Joel.
When the Cordysep outbreak first happened Joel tried to flee with his brother Tommy and Daughter Sarah, however she was killed by a member of the military and Joel very much spent the next chapter of his life grieving and angry at the world.
A feeling of hope came back when he was given the task of escorting Ellie to the Fireflies. Ellie was a young girl much like his daughter who was actually revealed to be immune to the virus. The Fireflies claimed to be able to extract the cure from her but upon finally arriving at their facility, Joel learned that she would die during the process.
Rather than go through the same thing again in which a member of the military would literally once more take away his daughter, Joel broke the cycle, killed the majority of the fireflies and surgoens and then fled with Ellie. Joel lied to her and told her that they weren’t able to extract the cure and Ellie bought it.
They returned to Joel’s brother Tommy and this is where the opening of Part 2 picks up.
Now before we get into the full breakdown we have to bear in mind this idea of cycles and breaking them. Though I don’t think that The Last Of Us Part 2 pulls off the theme as well as the prior entry, and I don’t think it really does it that well at all, I’m gonna remove my personal opinion from things for the mean time and just discuss the main elements of the storyline and what they actually mean.
There are several perspective changes and the events of the storyline jump back and forth between characters at several points so to keep things streamlined I’ll try and do everything in the order that makes the most sense. There’s also certain things from the trailer that were changed for the game and it’s clear that they tried to hide certain deaths as best they could.
Obviously let me know your thoughts on the storyline in the comments as we go through it but there’s a lot to talk about and the idea an eye for an eye leading to both people losing their sight is laced throughout the plot.
We open with Joel telling Tommy the truth about what happens as he cleans up his Guitar. Tommy is clearly horrified at what his brother as done but after Joel explains that he saved her life, he slowly sees things from his perspective and understands why he took the path he did without condoning.
Joel visits Ellie and gifts her his guitar, playing her the song Future Days which somewhat becomes his theme and ties massively into the end. The idea of cycles is very much highlighted by the game opening on this image of the guitar and butterfly stamp as it closes on it too, hinting at things coming full circle before a character breaks away from them.
We then get a huge four year time jump and alongside Ellie we are introduced to Jesse and Deena, a pair that have recently broken up. Ellie and Dinah clearly have a thing for one another and a kiss between the pair eventually lead to homophobia being thrown their way by a bartender. Joel steps in and saves Ellie and we learn throughout the story that Ellie actually journeyed to the hospital in which the fireflies were stationed at in the first game.

@@alpenoalal6815 thank you
Thank you for the breakdown that isn't an hour long🙏
Why couldn't they give us the option to have 2 endings though? Bad ending is Ellie murdering her, loosing her fingers & she makes it back home with everyone gone and shes alone, good ending with her not murdering anyone, keeps her fingers and makes it back home with a sign that she can find her family again or something before she rides out like the ending above.
This explains so much. But as someone who hasn’t played the games, I feel a bit confused on the characters and who you’re talking about even with you mentioning them. Keep up the good work though!
The thing that bugs me is that Ellie loses literally everything she has
Abby as well. She lost all of her friends
@@anggaseptian9935 yeah but she still has Lev. I understand that nobody really wins but I feel worse for Ellie
@@dicklickly5642 yes that's the point. She chose to let go and move on, while Ellie still processing her hatred.
As much as I love Joel, I understand why Abby did what she did. But she's lost the most. All her friends were dead. Even tho Ellie lost Dina and JJ, Tommy lost her wife, but they're still breathing.
@@anggaseptian9935 abby still has lev
like a lot of people have in a post apocalyptic world
Joel: Did you get your revenge?
Ellie: No
Joel: What did it cost?
Ellie: Yes
2 fingers
Jesse killed tommy shooted and ellie being without dina? perhaps
Uhh... She got quite a bit of revenge. Lol@anyone who thinks Abby didn't suffer a shit ton because of Ellie
It doesn't matter the surgeon was selfish the first place jole save his beloved Elie. And Abby should be dead in the most miserable way period
Douche 390 So were going to forget the fact that it was Ellies life for a potential cure...how is that grounds for being selfish? Also in the flashback it shows that the dad does feel conflicted about going through with too.
If Ellie didn’t go after Abby in Santa Barbara, Abby would have been killed, Ellie would still have her fingers, and she’d be with her family. Crazy how one decision can change so much
Ellie wouldn't have known Abby was dead, and would still have PTSD and panic attacks.
@@bounty1402 I feel like Ellie will still feel regret, like Tommy will definitely make her feel worse after finding out she didn’t kill Abby, and she will probably be in deep deep emotional pain
Like if Naughty Dog didnt make a sequel, keeping the franchise alive. Crazy how one decision can change so much.
Still ellie is trash
The game is still trash
All of this happened because Joel wanted guns from the firefly queen
Lol yea
Which he never got
69th like
Actually it was Tess
And he never got them. So the fireflies are BIG TIME assholes and Joel is not a monster for taking Ellie from them.
I honestly never thought a guitar sitting there would make me cry as much as it did
Same 😔😢
Ain’t gone lie I broke down
When he pointed out the significant symbolism of it
ong😔
I think it was the best ending I have played i fucking cried for that scene
Bruh i cried when ellie tried to play joels songs at the end but she coouldn't
That made me cry, Ellie playing take on me to Dina in Seattle day 1 made me cry, and some of the ending Joel cutscenes got me bad, great game I don't care what anyone says.
@@januaryloyd8932 it's because Ellie campaign was awesome with awesome character development ( you see how she's losing herself with each day) for me Ellie part was 9.5 ( Joel's death was mad stupid) but Abby part has really good gameplay situations but she is very boring and I really didn't care for her at all, for me 60% of the game is good really good, but fighting Ellie with Abby was an absolute joke took me a lot of time to force myself to do it
I cried when Joel was crying after their talk. I really lost it for Ellie after the game, her character was really ruined.
I cried when Owen was pounding Abby
I truly believe Ellie did have a happy ending, we just missed the clues... another CZcamsr commented on the letter you find at the farm when you are with Dina and the baby. It's from the baby's father's mom saying they will always have a place in Jackson if they choose to come back home. Also if you notice.....when Ellie leaves to fight Abby at the end....she's not wearing the bracelet Dina gave her....but when she returns...the camera zooms in on her hand ...we were focused on the fingers missing but looked completey passed the fact that now she is wearing the bracelet, possibly meaning she has already been to Jackson...and is living with Dina......she just went back to the farm for the guitar....but decided to leave it. That represents her finally being able to accept Joel's death and end the cycle of revenge.
Here's some more things to back this claim......
1. When she comes back to the farm...she's not hurt or not wearing any of her weapons.
2. She doesn't seem surprised that everyone is gone when she enters the house. She doesn't call out Dina's name or anything.
I think people were so caught up in "Revenge" that they missed all of these details.
A lot of people don’t see the symbolism as to why Ellie let Abby live. In that split second of almost drowning her and seeing a vision of Joel alive and playing a guitar Ellie realizes that Abby is the new Joel and Lev is the new Ellie. This is why she says “go, just take him“. She knows what it’s like to be a little kid and lose everybody that she cared about. She said this in part one when Joel tried to hand her off to Tommy. This game is so brilliantly done but a lot of people just don’t understand that yet. Give it some time.
They are too dumb for a game like this 😆
People are too critical of the game. Some people felt like they should not have had to play as Abby the character that kills the beloved Joel but there are two sides to every story. We understand that people connect with a character tend to sympathize with his/her actions. As I stated there are two sides to every story and Abby's story deserved to be told so the player understands her motives. I was pissed when Joel died and I was pissed having to play as Abby but when they showed why Abby's father's death I started to understand. People were saying that Ellie's character was bleak. If her character was bleak it was fitting considering what she had gone through. She wouldn't be the curious silly little girl she was in the 1st last of us game. People said that Ellie lacked character development. Again her circumstances makes her that way. I think your comment is a great explanation for people that may not understand the symbolism behind letting her go. Me personally if it was the players choice to kill abby or let her live I definitely would have killed her. It's probably just me staying being loyal to Ellie in avenging Joel's death.
Yeah no in that case Ellie should’ve just killed Abby AND Lev. Abby is just unlikeable for killing Joel it’s unforgivable and Ellie should’ve just finished her and killed Lev to stop the cycle before it starts again.
Gladius ExE “Abby is just unlikable for killing Joel“? Speak for yourself because I love her character and so do a lot others. She is completely justified in doing what she did to Joel in my opinion. When will people like you learn that although Joe did what he thought he had to do to save Ellie he ultimately made a decision that cost him his own life by killing a hospital full of fire flies, probably the best doctors, and their leader. There is absolutely no guarantee that killing Abby and Lev would’ve ended the cycle. Joel and Abby probably thought the same thing until people came looking for them to kill them. Open your mind and think a little.
I’m sorry but Abby has no sympathy from me, Joel and Tommy save her ass and then she kills Joel for a stupid mistake that Joel would have never made by revealing his identity , it’s just bad writing and it automatically kills all the like ability I could have had for Abby.
Ellie said her biggest fear was being alone, and in the end that's exactly what happened. I think that it's sad as hell but just because it's not what we wanted doesn't mean that it was a bad ending.
Shes with Dina and JJ in Jackson
Well yes it does?
That’s a good point
"The Last of My Fingers"
IGN - 8/10
LOOOOOOOOOOOL
Beautiful
Perfect
I see what you did with that score.... LOL!
Perfect
My Main Theory: Ellie is living in Jackson with Dina, JJ, and Jesse's parents.
Why: During the farmhouse section of the game, while carrying around JJ, we find a note on the table from Jesse's parents, saying that there will quote, "Always be a place here in Jackson for You, Ellie, and JJ." showing that Ellie would always have a home. Next, before heading to Santa Barbara(at the farmhouse) and during the Santa Barbara section of the game, and Ellie's fight with Abby, Ellie is not wearing the bracelet that Dina gave her in Seattle. If you check Ellie's backpack, the bracelet is not in her backpack, proving that Dina still has it. But when it cuts to her at the farmhouse, having returned, with no time frame of how long it has been, she is indeed wearing that bracelet again... showing that Dina gave it to her after she returned home from fighting Abby again. Which Dina wouldn't have done if she'd been done with, or abandoned Ellie. Another thing, notice that Ellie has nothing on her in her "return". No guns, no arrows, no gun holsters, no anything. Just her backback. If Ellie had just returned from a long trip back home, you'd think she'd still have those things on her. Right? So I believe that Ellie left Jackson that day, to either go for a walk, or purposely return to the old family home to retrieve her guitar. Another hint at this, is that there was no note left by Dina, for her return. If Dina loved Ellie as much as she seemed to, she would have left a note for her, amidst her return, telling her where she was or that she had moved on with JJ by herself. Ellie than trys to play the guitar one last time, prompting a more positive flashback of Joel. One, of them talking on a more positive note the night before he died. After the flashback, she leaves the guitar in the farmhouse and heads off the property into the woods. So I believe that she realized, that if she truly wanted to be happy and move on with Dina and JJ, she would need to move on from Joel and his memory. And so leaving behind the one thing she had left of him to hold onto (the guitar), she's leaving her brutal, revenge filled past behind her. To truly move forward in her life with Dina and JJ. So this, her walking into the woods, is not her losing everything, or going out on her own. But simply her returning home to her wife and child. Who in my opinion/theory, she returned to after the final events with Abby, and has been back with them for a significant period of time. And therefore the closing events of the game, take place after she had reunited with her family. Not before. Leading to my conclusion, the Ellie made up with Dina and is living happily with her in Jackson.
That's a nice theory. I really like it
Love the theory this would make a lot of sense and I hope that’s all true. This game really has me so emotional the ending seemed so dark but your theory really gave me closure so thank you (:
I chose to believe you. Thank you
Amazing observation with the bracelet not being on her wrist during the Santa Barbara section, I never noticed that and then her not having a backpack etc. when returning to the farmhouse. This is the best explanation and I’m choosing to believe this so I can have some actual closure that in the end everything worked out for Ellie. I can sleep soundly now haha
“Okay”.
*Plot twist*
Abby's gang: What's your name
Joel: "My Name Is Jeff"
*End credits*
it would be so damn awkward to know they smashed the head of a different joel. like wtf man there could be hundreds of joels in jackson 😅
Too bad Abby already knew he was Joel because Tommy told her first
u destroyed my emotional moment😂
As someone with PTSD, I really liked the ending of this game. This is just my opinion, but for me - At the end Ellie was suffering with PTSD, obviously
- not sleeping, not eating, the flashbacks, the going off by herself into the woods, and the feeling she HAD to go after abby - is realistic to me. it's difficult to describe anyone without it, but PTSD can often feel like you are physically trapped with no way out of your own reality. That your whole life is closing on you. That the past is forever there, suffocating you. Obviously you relive it through flashbacks, but it's more than that.
When Ellie said she had to go after abby, it was because she felt she had to not because she wanted to - She wanted to stay with her new family, but she had to stop her brain reliving the traumatic past again and again. She had to escape the trap, and she felt the only way was to kill abby - the person who really made her feel trapped to begin with. but I think she knew, deep down, it wouldn't help her escape. but hey, desperate times, amiright?
When ellie finally confronted abby, what were her words? "I cant let you leave" She could have said anything else "I won't let you leave" or "I'm going to kill you". Those would be words from someone confident, someone making the rules. but she didn't. those words "I can't let you leave" were very specific. they're words from someone not in control - someone who feels they didnt make the decision. A soldier following orders would say "I can't let you leave" or someone feeling like they had no choice in the matter, someone trapped -
like ellie.
At the very end ellie didnt have to kill Abby. When she was on the verge of killing abby, when abby couldnt fight back and was about to drown, Ellie had basically won at that point. it didnt even matter if abby lived or died past that point, as there was nothing abby could have done to change the outcome, and ellie realized that she probably has "won". And it didn't help. There was no opening of the trap, it didnt fix anything so she let abby go and she wept. still trapped.
It wasnt until she came back, sat alone with guitar she could no longer play, and thought about joel and forgiveness that, maybe, she realized that the only way out of the trap was to forgive mistakes of the past. forgive yourself for not being able to change the past. forgive others for being human.
I dunno. maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, see what makes sense to me. But still, I like the ending. People complain about the ending, saying ellie didn't get her revenge against abby. but they miss the fact that everything after the farmhouse - Ellie isnt going for revenge. Shes going because she feels like she has to, to try to fix herself.
I really like your analysis of the story. It makes a lot of sense.
Dude they’re definitely sleeping on this, well thought out comment! Nails it to the T man
Excellent take on Ellie. It’s accurate. With that being said we need to analyze Abby as well.
After four years of pent-up grief, Abby has the person she has been desperately seeking in her grasp-coincidentally, being saved by him and Tommy only minutes before. The moment she has been solely focused on is finally in front of her; but rather than pleading for mercy or showing an ounce of remorse, the man who murdered her father practically mocks her, telling her to “get on” with whatever she has planned and dismissing her power over him.
Joel’s reaction hurts her, but it also goads her, and she’s freshly reminded of her grief as the man who killed her dad is sitting in front of her without a shred of guilt. It’s in that moment that her plan in how to deal with him changes: asking Mel to torniquet his leg-a request that seemingly takes Mel by surprise-and reaching for the golf clubs out of convenience. Her bottled emotions burst and she unleashes her misery towards Joel in a way that is scrappy, messy and brutal.
And yet, her attack on Joel doesn’t provide relief. With each blow, she’s conflicted-never actually regretting that Joel is getting what he deserves, but also not finding an any sense of satisfaction. By dealing more pain, she thinks it might help to alleviate the anger inside her, as if she is projecting her inner turmoil onto him. Instead, she just zones out into confusion, memories plagued by the day she found her father dead. The subtle glimpses of anguish on her face brewing beneath the surface in this scene are extremely telling: she isn’t enjoying or finding catharsis here despite thinking she would.
When Abby confronted Ellie at the theater the game shows us again how her anger consumes her. While pointing the gun at Tommy, Ellie comes out and says “I’m the one you want, there’s no cure because of me” instead of telling Ellie her killing Joel had nothing to do with the cure was foreshadowed in her thoughts because of her anger. As she’s looking and listening to Ellie speak we see in Abby’s face that rage and her response to Ellie was “You killed my friends. We let you live”- After Abby grabbed Dina Ellie said “She had nothing to do with this. She’s pregnant” Abby response was “Good” and as she was about to cut Dina throat- Lev, the voice of someone she trusted got her to clam down (which is also shown in her facial expressions) simply by saying her name and she lets Dina go.
It’s pretty clear Abby has anger issues and has nightmares which is usually a sign of feelings of sadness, confusion and guilt.
Ellie and Abby both suffered in their own way because of Joel actions. That’s what they have in common now.
Good one, fully agree
Well written
The beauty is that no-one got the ending they wanted, not even the people in the story itself.
well said man
Yep because we all wanted everyone to be miserable thats why I play games
Christopher Terzakos yeah, i got a little traumatised because of the plot, i have to process the whole story.
Christopher Terzakos can u explain how the fuck would u be miserable? I would have gotten it if Ellie was killed by Abby, but even Abby gave both Dina and Ellie another chance to live and was done with the whole revenge game.
wouldn't it be great If somebody did a backflip, snap some necks and saved the day?
tlou 2: ellie breaks 1 cycle of violence by starting 100s of other cycles of violence
she failed her genocide run and will have to restart so she can have the sans fight
That's why it's just a waste
No you're confusing things, Ellie realized her mistake at the very end, so of course she killed scores of people before that point. The audience knows she is creating hundreds of enemies, but she might not care.
@@calmingwaves3134 maybe the last of us 3 will go on the story of a person she killed and then she could end finally the circle by even trying to use herself as a cure.
That actually would be a good ending for even the franchise and this game could have been just the stepping stone for getting to that.
@Play it out well I'm not saying that the last of us part II , It could still hold itself without a third part so ce it is considerable as an open ending.
You know someone will start another cycle, you just don't know who will and how it will end.
The reason I love this story is because it tries to show us and explain something I've always believed: Two sides, filled with good people who are just trying to survive, neither side is evil, but despite that and being very similar to one another, they each see each other as monsters, even tho neither is. Some people in this world are just bad. But most of the time, differences arise, and our sheer lack of not having known that person let's us hate them or see them as evil. When in reality, that person laughs, has loved ones, helps people, etc.
This was the comment I was looking for. I’m still trying to figure out how everyone can hate Abby and the whole plot so much, it was unexpected in a good way
Beautiful take
The ending is depressing, and gives the true sense of reality to the meaning not everything is meant to be. It was a good ending, leaving a proper setup to the next part I give it a 10/10.
Clown
I agree. I loved this game
Guys I just found out about doing a ride on reddit and stuffs like this, TH ENDING IS NOT DEPRESSING.
When Ellie (in the final) returns to the farm she wears Dina's bracelet (which she did not have in Santa Barbara), new clothes, she has no weapons and the wounds on her fingers have been closed.
Do you know what this means? That the farm scene, the final scene, doesn't happen right after the bossfight with Abby, but later.
It means that after almost killing Abby, Ellie returned to Jackson where she also found Dina (otherwise it is not clear who would have given him the bracelet) and on the farm she did not go hoping to find Dina, but only to play the guitar of Joel for the last time since this is like forgiving him.
Ellie hasn't lost everything and the ending is not a sad ending, in the last scene Ellie is RETURNING to Jackson, where in all probability Dina is still waiting for her.
I'm not sure Dina is in Jackson waiting for her, but the only SURE thing is that after the bossfight with Abby Ellie she returned to Jackson, and then left for the farm where she had left Joel's guitar.
Nah, trash
I liked the game, though I hated the first 4 hours, it was a good game in the end. People just have no sense and are just mad at Joel dying,

I get that this is a joke but to clarify the ending for others who don't understand, Ellie spent years trying to forgive Joel for what he did. In the end, she never got the chance to forgive Joel, so instead, she chose to forgive Abby. Ellie chose forgiveness finally, for once in her life.

I think both part 1 and part 2 are masterpieces. One is a story about the positives that come out with doing things for love. The second is a story about the revenge that can be sought in service of love. I really loved the story in the sequel and think it perfectly adds all the layers that continue the story and the world established in the first game.
Finally someone normal in the comments! Totally agree, i loved abbie as a character alzo
Same! I thought the story of part 2 was incredible. It really just showed that there really aren’t any good or bad guys, just a bunch of people doing what they think is right. Ellie/Abby, Scars/WLF, Joel/Fireflies there’s 2 sides to every story. Also illustrated brilliantly the effect of unhealed emotional trauma on a persons decisions and motivations.
@@taimen1992 ill never forget this lovely story. Not sure why fans get pissed off cuz joel died lol, he was nice guy but we all die i guess

I think Joel's death was stupid. He went through the whole first game, almost dying, so many risks. But in the end he gets killed by a golf club? It should've been a greater death where Joel went down fighting or something
He should have gun down guns blazing shooting clickers or killing bandits
What if he just died of old age with Ellie by his side?

It just annoys me that she lost her fingers, idk why

Same thing happenned to me on John Wick 3.
Many people felt rage and anger at Joel’s death and struggled to let go of it and accept Abbie as a protagonist. This was intentional and uncomfortable and subverted normal storytelling in games. If you are really honest with yourself though it’s extremely bold to flip the story like this and has not been done before in this way. Metal gear 2 did this bit that story is pure b movie whereas this is like high quality television. I personally do not feel the end is depressing. Ellie is alive and is able to move on past Joel. Her life is not ruined and it can still have meaning. We just don’t know how yet. I hope in the final game she finally manages to sacrifice herself to save humanity. That would be a good ending for her character.
What final game? I doubt they'll make another LoU game after this.
ant they absolutely will. This has been a mega smash hit.
@@steevie1000 Yeah because many people bought the game to see if it's as bad as most people think and Part 1 was beloved by everyone. It's the same as with The Last Jedi in Star Wars. Sure, it sold but part 3 had really low scores and people finally realised it's trash and gave up. I don't think they'll make Part 3 in LoU unless they want this franchise to die in pain like Star Wars.
ant part 2 was critically acclaimed and is one of the highest grossing games on the PS4. As if idiotic 0/10 user scores mean anything. The game is a masterpiece and there will be a sequel.
@@steevie1000 With Ellie and Joel? Doub it. Maybe if they'd do prequel.
No I’m glad she didn’t kill Abby, Abby was a great character. I’m glad they both finally gave up. Especially more on Elies part. Abby let her live twice fgs. But at least Elie saved Abby
So many ppl just can’t handle the death of Joel and they believe that Abby is too bad of a character that they don’t relate with her in the second half
Bilal Ahmed start of the second half I didn’t but I slowly liked her a lot more
Bruce Wayne she’s not trans, she’s just a muscular women...
Paul Tougher yh but she got leaked and ppl thought she was trans cus she had muscles
I agree I love Abby
I feel like the focus of the story should have been much more on Ellie's and Joel's relationship - spending time exploring what Joel lying about the fireflies did to their relationship.
Anna Brøchner would have been so much better.
It kind of did, did you even play the game
What are you talking about? It totally did, is the freaking heart of the game. Did you even played it?
We actually get it in memories of Ellie
Naaaaaaah
Thats good story
Lets focus on her butchering people but not killing the goal and her lesbian relationship so we show that we progress
Waited 7 years for this game just to see our favourite character from this franchise get killed with a golf club

Chad bad I agree with this it’s just the way he died was just to much and then NO PAYBACK like wtf
@Mark D I have a tin foil hat for you, and some non fluoride tooth paste if you're interested. I hear the fluoride helps 5G waves penetrate your brain easier.
@Chad bad that's not the point, his character was destroyed, they wrote him as clueless and careless, that was not Joel at all, and we don't need the excuse he's older, nah bs, then that makes the argument older is wiser statemt false which has been proven true already time and time again
I only now finished LoU1&2 and the end of two….that tore me up, and the flippin credits with Ellie and Joel singing squeezed my heart tightly
I didn’t feel that she walked away from her memories of joel. By not putting the guitar away, leaving it open ... sitting out like that ... it’s clearly imagery of her moving on but also with her memories and grief freed in a way. That’s what I got from it anyway.
It's really stupid that the player seems to have no choice on how the story goes when the story seems to be all about "choices." Thanks for the walk through! I definitely will skip this one, but I was never interested in it at all, even before the leaks.
Yeah even early on you are forced to be Abby. Think there’s 3 character changes within the first half hour
I never wanted to play this and only played the first one due to hype. I always thought it was a gimped version of Uncharted with a “mature” story. The writer also seems to enjoy the smell of his own farts. I say this not due to what he did to this game, but how he talked about changing uncharted 4 and how the original writer was a hack. He just seems disingenuous.
Same, since playing first Tomb Raider Reboot, i didnt like the game. Uncharted and TLoU has this kind of gameplay so i rather watched it on youtube. This part 2 really punch in the face from the 1st game in story. So why building the 1st game plot about immunity that can save humanity but the 2nd game just about revenge. And how they killed joel at the early game while giving us gameplay of the one who killed him in such NPC way and making this girl as likeable characters is insulting to 1st game. Plus the ending of letting her go is stupid in any sense way. But yes another game died because of real world politics. May TLoU franchise death become example for other devs and publisher to not mix real lide politics into video games...
That's what I'm thinking as well. The game kinda tells you you're an asshole because you played it. And if you had played the first one you're an even bigger asshole. It's a okay story for a tv show (not really a new message and not really a fresh take but it works) or maybe a movie or a book, but it's not a good story for a game. The audience never was interested in revenge, the audience only wanted to play a game, so no need to lecture them.
The first installment was about choices. But you still had one ending.
Ellie : doesn't kill Abby to break the revenge cycle
Also Ellie : *literally kills 100 or more people who probably had a family or someone close to them, which makes more cycles*
Exactly, only Abby has friends or family evidently. Such horseshit.
Could be the reason why every time you killed an enemy, someone tragically shouts out their name.
for more stupid sequels lol
OMG...so Part III will be the child of some random person she killed trying to kill her after all these years. Most likely it will be that unknowingly Ellie adopted this child who will kill her.
Just like kill bill
I thought this game was really thoughtful. I think it tries to teach a lesson about how revenge can make a person go crazy and utterly toxic.
It’s a lesson that all people need to understand and adopt.
I rate that you like this game but I'm sorry rdr2 did that theme so much better and it wasn't even the main focus of the story this game tried to explore that theme but did it so poorly some poor guy has to explain it on CZcams
Exactly but you how goofies this so called "die hard fans" are they can't understand that they braindeads lool
Yeah the cycle of revenge
I definitely understand Abby’s anger, but the way she killed Joel was beyond sick.
joel is the villain in abby's lifestory

@@OGSinisterPotato⁷⁷
@@OGSinisterPotatoIt’s all about perspective and there’s so many ways to see this. The whole idea of Part 2 is that both are not the villains and both people are simpethetic but also have done terrible things. For abby she sees the situation as ”The villain killed my father because he was about to create a cure that could save millions but he had to save the girl who was okay with dying for the greater good and with my father killing countless fireflies that had family’s and lives. So i made it my life’s goal to get revenge by killing the man that destroyed the lives and future of countless people”
Here's my take: The hatred that Ellie feels towards Abby is an externalized reflection of the hatred Ellie harbors for herself. Why? Well Joel deeply hurt both Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially because she didn't get a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a mirror because Ellie also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I'd say in a way that was more painful for Joel, and that was by disconnecting from him. She hates herself for torturing him like that and not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That's the real pain she has been trying to avoid facing during this entire revenge quest, she's like a drug addict using revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret. This is the realization she has while she is drowning Abby when she has the flashback to the scene on the porch with Joel and chooses to spare Abby. She's not just forgiving Abby, she's really most importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to terms with what happened between her and Joel, I think her leaving his guitar to rest in the house and walking away is supposed to symbolically represent that she has forgiven Joel, made peace with what happened between them and is finally ready to move on and start a new life. I hated the end at first but after much deliberation I think it's actually really poetic. People saying the game is just about "revenge is bad" I think have really missed the point.
This is... A very good explanation of the game. Thanks for this.
I agree, but i still want to think she went back to Jackson and fixed things with Dina. Then she can live her life. Hated how they made her feel alone. The writers could have done better with the ending.
@@KamuiRx Don't think she went back to Jackson, because Dina had asked Ellie before the trip to Santa Barbara to stay at the farm, to prove that she loves Dina and Ellie left anyways. I think at that moment Dina wanted to leave Ellie behind and I do not think she would want to return to the person who thinks revenge is more important than family or a loved one. Plus Tommy would still be angry at Ellie for not killing Abby. If she went to return to Jackson, it wouldn't be a nice time over there.
YES! Well said. Despite Joel's minimum appearance in the game, it really is still about Ellie and Joel's relationship.
FINALLY SOMEONE GOT IT! The rest of the ranters must have wanted Joel to die fighting a cordyceps dragon to save Ellie and Ellie living happy forever pregnant with blonde babies or some shit.
But the story is at least plausible and definitely engaging . A tale of revenge seen from a point of view no revenge tale is often seen from: Bot parties. The Meta feeling it gives me by humanizing the “bad guys” reminds me of Spec Ops: The Line. .
What made the Last of Us so enjoyable to me was that even with so much darkness there was hope at the end.
With the sequel....not so much.
@@normandy2501 Point is, those arent videogames
@Forsaken Pumpkin how ironic, I like how you try to blame him for wanting his vision of the game to be the one he wanted to be made when fan fictions in books are literally the exact same thing, and Neil Druckman basically turned TLOU2 into his own fan fiction where the "hero" is a trans woman who kills Joel and gets away after biting Ellie's fingers with no real loss other than friends who she's killed more than a fair share's worth by killing Joel and Jesse indirectly

@@mangoose3569 1. Abby is not transgender

There's hope for Abby and Lev. Everyone just fucking hates Abby so nobody sees it that way.
Ellie didn’t kill Abby because at the end she had a flashback of Joel. Abby basically did the same thing Joel did..she went out of her way to protect someone she didn’t know..she risked her life battling big creatures..her fear of heights..going to enemy territory..taking the responsibility of helping a kid that was a enemy ..fighting and killing her own people...Joel has been through this and Ellie realized it with Abby when looking at lev..that’s my theory on why Ellie didn’t kill abby...a cycle of bulshit that she couldn’t finish
There isn’t any better way i can explain. This is perfect. A cycle of bullshit that she couldn’t finish.

Lol except there is literally NO WAY Ellie could know abby went through any of that. She wouldn't be able to draw ANY parallels cuz Ellie, with her lack of knowledge, doesn't know anything about jer or what she went through.
Joseph R3grET think about it Lev is about the same age Ellie was in the first game... Abby DID NOT have to go back to help them...just like Joel DID NOT have to help go across country with Ellie...Abby’s character changed in the story because she definitely could of murdered Dina an Ellie all together but she didn’t...thats character development...also lev helped with this transformation..just like Ellie helped transform Joel...y’all gotta look deeper into the story...
@@brandonclark4515 I agree with you. Still, Ellie knows NONE of that. All she sees is a scar kid n a man-bear-pig, n the ladder killed Joel. She dont give a shit about ANYTHING except finding her. You can look as deep as you want, that still doesn't make sense, and that ending is still pig-shit.
I thought this game was brilliant, including the writing, I think people wanted a straight forward revenge story but I cant see why, the games are somber so I already expected for TLU2 to close out that way, I love Abby's arc and I wasn't too shocked when Joel died, I thought it was really ballsy, Naughty Dog took a risk that most game developers wont do, whether you liked it or not, it kept you intrigued on what was next. Abby got way too much heat and I cant understand why, her and Ellie are very much the same, I compare them to Rick and Negan, had you followed Negan/Abby from the beginning, they'd be the good guys, I think the true brilliance is that the game forces you to choose between logic and what your heart feels, a decision that is just as complex as Abby and Ellie's feelings.

Her seeking revenge ended up destroying everything she ever cared for. So this makes the ending so much more even worst with the quite from The Ranch Scene.
"Everybody I've cared for has either died or left me fucking except for you" something along those lines.
But mna she trully lost everything got his revenge. For me I believe she didn't killed Abby because of Lev and remembering what happened to Joel when she ended at the bottom floor of the building. When they were beeting the hell out of him. Like at one point in the game it got me uncomfortable seeing Ellie beauting the hell out of some of the people when she came back to the theater and said to Dina she made her talk. Like there was such a sickening part of the action she had in a way. To a point while playing I got tired and felt the burden ofnher quest how heavy it was to getbher revenge at what cost too.
Like all the game I've played had some happy ending ish. But this one has thebsaddest most depressing ending ever. Like they could have ended thecgame a the theater to be honest but that last part of humanity was left in Lev. By recalling Joel at the end when she was about to kill Abby was kind of Ellie's last part of humanity she had in to correct she was about to destroy.
I like the ending as I didn't really wanned a sequel for it. The first game such a good job at making you realise how anyone can died in this wolrd that is The Last of Us.
Just to bring some back on Sarah, Tess, Sam, Henry, Riley
Like to get a sequel and have the theme about hate I needed it to be about as hateful as it could get with the character. I even disapproved what Ellie said to Dina as she stoped caring about her simply because she got blinded with Ellie seeking her revenge.

they were trying to replicate the first games fake ending where they arrive at the hospital and everything is going to be okay. then it turns out nothing will be okay and one last level to fight through. but unlike part 1 this game's final level didn't make any sense why it should exist. yes they needed ellie to get revenge on abby and they needed something for her to fight through to get to them just like joel fought through the fireflies to get to ellie. but couldn't they have found a better story to justify why she has to fight to get to abby? we didn't need some generic human's are horrible when society isn't there to reel them in faction.
I had a feeling Joel was going to die pretty early in the game so I prepared myself for that so I could enjoy the rest of the game for what it is! A tale of unfulfilled revenge, sacrifices and forgiveness! It hasn't got a happy ending and it leaves you feeling like Ellie would have felt at the end of the game, empty! It’s just bad writing.
Especially after the ultimatum finally gave her.
It’s an agenda. This isn’t a sequel to the last of us, it’s PSA on the worlds problems. Forcing the characters we love to be a part of modern events in the world is not how it should be handled. (Full respect for LGBTQ) however, those subjects should be inserted into the story, don’t insert the story into those subjects.

Because Abby is the new Joel for Part 3. *vomits*
But Ellie didn't end the cycle by letting them go in the end. Whose to say that a family member of any of the many people she killed trying to get to Abby wont come looking for her...just like Abby looked for Joel
Exactly. It's funny how all the reviewers including this one completely miss such a blatant point. It's almost like people switched their brains off when reviewing this game because the first one was so highly rated. Just like they came after Joel they could come after Ellie, just shows how stupid the storyline was by basing it on such a flawed idea. Thinking that revenge cycle ends just because Ellie doesn't kill Abby is next level retarded, it's not like she didn't kill dozens of other people who also have families and loved ones. Absolutely retarded story, no other words to describe it.
Right?
@@edderwright9042 they are paid bruh
Obviously allot of people did not get the message of the game. But looks like you did!
Why does the storyline have to be perfect? Where Abby just forgives Joel, and we all move on? I thought it was realistic. At the end of the day Joel killed her father, to save Ellie. Joel would have sought revenge too if Ellie were killed. And now Ellie is doing it for Joel. What about the 100 people that she kills in the game to get to her goal? Their families are not allowed to be upset? I did not see a cut scene of Joel trying to reason with the doctor long enough. He just killed them like it was nothing. While in a desperate infected world when they find out Ellie is immune, people want to get that cure.
The only thing Abby knows is that her dad was trying to make a cure (so he was trying to do something good) I don't like how she handled it regarding Joel, but i get it. It was just as bad as what Ellie was doing.

This seems to be the new "edgy" thing to do from so called story tellers. The last 2 or 3 years features dark dank like meme storytelling in film, television and video games. Game of Thrones and this game will probably be the best 2 examples of this truly forgettable era of storytelling.
I feel like the ending scene with Ellie leaving means something else. The guitar had Firefly image on the grid. And she keeps going to the left which looks like going into direction of the Firefly. In my opinion it means now that she lost her family with Dina, she'll set things right with the world, seeking Fireflies and turning herself in to make the medicine for virus. This obviously means she'll die in the process but it'll save future generations and she'll be reunited with Joel.
I managed to avoid all spoilers which meant i was able to go into this game without already forming opinions on leaks and rather allow myself to experience the story as was intended.
Joels death was awful, it filled me with absolute anger and hatred towards Abby..... and I liked it, this game made me feel, and that was the point. It wasn't what I wanted at all but the hate is needed to form this great story on revenge, forgiveness, and the whether we're truly willing to give up everything for something that ultimately solves nothing. This world isn't about what we want, it's a cold, harsh, lawless world, and Joel lived that for many years surviving by any means. Joel by his own admission had murdered potentially innocent people as a "hunter" earlier in his life (Pittsburg in first game he mentions he had ambushed people)
When we first switched to Abby I was curious, and as the game went on building her world with the stadium and her side of the story I began to hate her less, this soldier who had lost her way after getting the revenge she craved and dedicated both her life and body too for so long. She had no meaning anymore, everything she did was as a daughter, a firefly and not a wolf. Killing Joel avenged her father and completed her final mission as a firefly. She now felt lost until finding Yara and Lev, a new (intended) short term purpose which of course then became bigger, Abby then renouncing what association she did have with the WLF completely and following in Owens dream of finding the rumoured Fireflies in Santa Barbara.
By the end of the game I didn't want to kill Abby, I was mad the game was forcing me to fight her, i wanted to forgive Abby and at that last moment Ellie did too. Eliie had realised that if she was finally able to forgive Joel with the "forgiveness" flashback in her mind, the one thing she had thought Abby had stolen from her, and in that forgiveness maybe she could start trying forgive Abby too and break that cycle.
Honestly exactly how I felt about the story as well
You got it 10% correct. I avoided all the spoilers/trailers completely to take the story in as intended myself.
I agree, the minute Abby killed Joel, in my head i was like "i am going to murder this bitch and everyone in this group" but after playing the game and looking at it from Abby's perspective, i didnt want Abby to die and I obviously didn't want Ellie to die either.. there are just so many layers
This deserves more likes 👏🙌👍
I agree, I think playing as Abby was supposed to be as jarring as possible at first. They wanted that conflict in your mind especially when you had to fight Ellie. I feel like the only thing that fell short for me was the fight at the very end. For the sake of the story I would have felt less awkward if they just forgave each other, but then you're left without a final battle of sorts. For me the theme was that no one was innocent but no one was guilty either. Everyone has their demons I guess
They should've made the story about redemption, forgiveness and hope. Abby, the little girl who lost her father and therefore lives a horrible childhood in this messed up world without him. Who grows up seeking revenge on a man she doesn't know the name of. When Joel realizes what he has done and how selfish his actions in the first game were, seeing all the struggles this girl has gone through without her father because of his actions, reminds him of the pain he went through when losing his daughter, and from then in seeks out to help every honest soul he can. So he befriends Abby, and she becomes a new friendly companion to the two. And saves her life once or twice with some super heartfelt moments along the way. Until later when they all come across what's left of the fireflies, Abby reveals the truth about who Joel is. Attempts to almost kill him, leaving him badly wounded. But remembers the journey she had with him and Ellie, and can't bring herself to kill him knowing how much it will destroy Ellie to lose her "father". And realizes that nothing good can come of revenge. And chooses to forgive him instead. And if a main character has to die, have Ellie willingly sacrifice herself to the doctors looking for a cure. She would finally bring hope to the new world. And Joel can't selfishly shoot or lie his way out of it this time. He has to accept her fate. But at least Joel and Abby would have a new friendship. And Ellie would've saved the world.
That's my ending anyways.

Th storyline of this game was absolutely amazing and heartbreaking. Love it
Honestly they should just leave it here, they should try to make amends with a story DLC with ellie finding dina and have her happy ending, we don't need more stories of abbey or lev, just end it on a DLC and then make a new IP or something, people most likely won't be happy with a sequel that focuses on Abbey and lev...
I want this happen please omg im sad
Idk after beating it i do like abby and lev....its pretty much joel and ellie which makes me understand the story alittle more abby trying to save lev is like joel trying to save ellie abby is pretty much the parental figure for lev while he lost both his mother and sister i like this story there is so much symbolism in it and you really got look at body expressions and peoples faces in this game...cuz even those gestures in themselves tell a story....tho i prefer the first games narrative more this one really makes you think/reflect....it fucked with all my emotions and i liked it...i understand why ellie didn't kill abby...i liked it ....its a 9 out of 10 for me
Christopher Gleich Gotcha but I personally lost interest in the series after this and honestly what would a sequel focus on? Finding a cure? I feel like it’d be best for them to take a long break or just stop here after a DLC and focus on a new IP.
@@ChrisG-qe5hr Well your opinion is a minority , so if democracy still works i do think Abby and Lev will never see any light whatsoever , and if they do they will be completly rewritten.
VICENTIMENTS VLOG'S They should, people are rightfully disappointed IMO, I don’t get how this got a 95 score like come on a big part of this series is the story and they fucked it up here, it’s not that Joel died we all knew he was most likely going to die, it’s the way he went out and also jesse went out like fodder, a guy that was in every fucking trailer.
And they say Mass Effect 3's ending was bad....
Thanks for your hard work making these videos.
I literally cried my eyes out when I was playing and Joel got killed 💔
It was just edgy for the sake of it. Too many logical inconsistencies in both plot and character behaviour. Terrible game
Yeah I kinda feel like people actually interested in surviving wouldn’t be doing this stuff
@@heavyspoilers they just ruined a great IP for the edge factor... I'm very disappointed
@@spartanghost_17 hey at least it's woke!
Yea why does Joel tell Abby his name?
@@heavyspoilers In the earliest days of human civilization, or at least after early written language when survival was more difficult, you don't think people carried out revenge plots?
You know, just having Ellie and Joel go in an argument for how Joel killed all the doctors in the last game, causing Ellie to hate Joel which also breaks their bond, but then being able to move on from that and forgive Joel somehow which would reestablish their Father and daughter relationship would honestly be a way better story than the one that we got.

Finally somebody who get's what I'm saying. I actually liked the ending, both how Ellie leaves Abby and Lev alive to escape and leaving the guitar. It's not easy to forgive and to deal with grief and seeing how Ellie finally let go of the past by swallowing her thirst for revenge, but it was too late after how far gone she's gotten. I also liked the symbolism behind the old house and the dead plants around Ellie as she leaves for a greener, brighter future.
All I wanted was for it to end with Ellie holding her and Dina’s kid on the tractor while she sang him the potato song. That made me cry no joke.
Without playing the game and just hearing how the story went, I’ve figured out that Abby was a mirror character of Ellie only without the immunity. That being said, I am still disappointed how Joel didn’t get a redemptive arc, and Ellie turned out to be a lost soul. The Last Of Us ended its dilogy without a conclusion to our favorite characters. To be fair, if the game maker wants us to sympathize with Abby, maybe tell her story from a flashback rather than forcing the player to played her for the vast majority of the game as this is still a Joel and Ellie’s narratives. The first TLOU is a masterpiece with a definite conclusion as we understand Joel’s action and Ellie’s trust.
Agreed, kinda wished they’d ended at the first game. The gameplay of the second is incredible but the story is so bad it negates it.
"I am still disappointed how Joel didn’t get a redemptive arc"
Or any arc at all, for that matter :s
Druckmann said it would be cowardly not to continue Joel and Ellie's story but then just kills off Joel quickly. He then makes us play as a new character for large portions of the game. Not much continuation there, imho.
This comment sums up my feelings perfectly 🙌
Maybe even playing as Abby for a while (well, many hours), learning the new character and her history and everything would have been easier to swallow if they did it BEFORE the scene where she beats Joel to death.
also the franchise now sucks joel and ellie were the duo i don’t want to be abby in a future game
Just realize, the "Woke crowd" can not come up with unique and Original IPS so they do what they did with say Ghostbusters, they take over an already established IP that was successful and try and pander there BS that THEY themselves know wont sell for shit just to try and pass their message along. If you know an Original IP that is actually good from the woke crowd do let me know
@One Thou Wou what relationship? ellie calling Joel an "asshole" and going through a mueseum is all i got in this... i saw no relationship progression.
@One Thou Wou what made the first game so much better wasn't just the story. It was the tone of it. Walking around as Joel and having all the conversations with Eli was amazing. There was no relationship between the two. It may have been about revenge for Joel. And yeah there are some nice scenes, but it's no relationship. It's just a pointless story. There was no grounds for the story. Abby's story didn't make sense. Assuming Joel was that Joel was stupid, as well as Eli going through hell and deciding to get revenge twice only to not go through with it. I get it's the cycle blah blah. But she just killed so many people, someone's coming back for her anyways.
Future game? Once the SJW kills it's prey it moves on to the next.
@@Jazz4Ever1929 Last Of Us (1) was an awesome game with a great story. To now say it and the whole franchise sucked just because LOU2 is crap is wrong and very dumb.
I loved Abby after playing her. I could see things from her point of view and she spared Ellie more than once and Dina as well. The thought of Ellie still wanting to kill Abby really bothered me. At the last fight, I just stood there because I didn’t want Abby to do, eventually I was glad that Ellie changed her mind and broke the cycle.
I believe that before going back to the farmhouse, Ellie went back to Jackson. The bracelet is proof that she saw Dina again, she's not surprised or call Dina's name when she found the house empty, she says multiple time how much she misses JJ ans Dina in her diary and it's also kind of Tommy's fault if she went looking for Abby... However, the reason that makes believe she went back to Jackson (even if maybe she doesn't share Dina's life anymore) is her journey towards Santa Barbara. On the road she crossed paths with hordes that forced her to stay hidden in a cave, bury kids, Las Vegas infected and most importantly, the Rattlers. The fact that there is a group not that far, controling an entire state and captures people to enslavement is a good reason to leave an isolated farmhouse where you live alone with a toddler and your partner.
I am 100 % positive that another TLOU will be developed for the ps5, but would it be a good idea to bring back Ellie? She went through some real shit in the two games and a DLC, bringing her back will be the same as telling her " Hey! We hate you so much! Here are some new problems to make you and your loved ones suffer even more!". Anyway, the first part ended with a feeling of "unfinished buisness" that kind of forced the development of the second part.
Abby's narrative arc proved that the game isn't only about Joel and Ellie, that the studio can develop solid, well written characters opening numerous possibilities for a sequel without Ellie.
This game deserves all the awards he got,I enjoyed every second of it.
A story without joel and ellie isn't worth it. They shouldn't make part 3.
Yeah! I totally agree, I don't like the idea of Abby's involvement in the game.
No cap I hated playing with Abby
Their is no part two
I feel the first game ended in a good place, it didn’t need a sequel but it could definitely get one if done right... and yeah this wasn’t done right.
ARTHEN I feel like Abby made this game bad
I see media outlets and journalists who don't even play video games are writing articles on this title with little or no alalyisis of the actual plot itself. Instead they're focusing on the representation of LGBT or female characters as if ones sex or sexual preferences is literally the only thing that defines them. So predictable, so lazy..
You ain't making sense bro....
Well go see media outlets and journalists who play video game. It's normal that those who don't play won't talk about gaming. Videogames has social themes too.
Now why don't you criticize the fact that lot of people who (apparently) are honest gamers, hate the game, Naughty Dog, Neil Druckman, their life and the whole world right now, because they're still paranoid about the fact that LGBT lobies are taking control of videogame and movie industry lmao. With little or no alalyisis of the actual plot itself. Instead they're focusing on the representation of LGBT or female characters as if ones sex or sexual preferences is literally the only thing that defines them. So predictable, so lazy.. So insecured. There's a bunch of em in a lot of comment sections. Go for it.
so basic the game just want to teach player to let go to hate.... they try to drive player to play this shitty game by gave you a reason and feel to finish it... Last of Us is never a happy game...hence why i don't bother finishing it...
@MosesBad its how he died, it didnt make sense for Joel to randomly save and trust total strangers and let his guard down, thats literally the opposite of his character he always has his guard up. And they did it so early when they couldve made it more meaningful.
@MosesBad - It really felt like a big kick in the nuts being forced to play as Abby for so long, and (SPOILERS) you even fight against Ellie! It's a huge disrespect to us as gamers and our relationship to Ellie and Joel. To have them die is one thing. To play on the side of their murderer is another thing altogether!!
Genuinely loved this. I really appreciate you making this video explaining things. She did the right thing at the end.
I think the game would've been better if both story lines occurred back-to-back rather than solely focusing on Abby after almost 3/4 of the game had been completed. This would've made the player understand not only Abby, but establish character development for the other WLF characters. There were way too many cut scenes. The SB setting was one of my favorite parts of the game. Naughty Dog should focus the third game on a character in CA.
After playing as Abby, I grew a huge appreciation for her. I sympathized with her. it was hard deciding who to root for in the final fight. Ellie and Abby are damn near the same.
Me too. Granted I didn’t play the first game until after the second so I never really had the attachment to Joel, but Abby was very sympathetic. If Ellie doesn’t think she can forgive Joel, why would she ever expect Abby to be able to do so? Abby let her and the others live and even after she killed nearly all of abbys friends Abby let’s her go AGAIN. Outside of Joel, Ellie’s actions basically lead to her other friends deaths an almost got her girlfriend killed too.
I LOVED Abby’s campaign. It showed that she just wanted revenge for her father to feel better but actually it didn’t. During her & Mel’s dialogue on the back of the hummer Mel asks her “so how are you sleeping these days”? Abby replies “ not great”. That tells her story right there. Seeing her dad dead on the floor from being murdered by Joel gave her nightmares for 4 years straight. Killing Joel didn’t make her feel any better. The only thing that stopped them was saving Yara & Lev...because revenge is indeed a fool’s game. I don’t blame Ellie either. I question whether Ellie would’ve gone after Abby if she knew that the doctor that Joel killed was Abby’s dad. One of the things that the game tried to make you understand is that you could be killing someone that someone else cares about...& they did it flawlessly. I actually wanted Abby to whoop Ellie’s ass but just don’t kill her. Ellie was headed to a point of no return after killing a pregnant woman & the only person that didn’t want to see her harmed...Owen.

I’d bet money if this comes to PC that someone will hack it to save Joel.
I wish that'd be possible but to rewrite the story, you have to remake the game, add/edit entire levels and dialogues, etc... It's simply not possible :/
They'd make a mod that joel beats Abby with the club as payback
Captain XLAB says who? ever heard of *mods* ?
Captain XLAB do you know the crazy shit people do with fallout or Skyrim? Not sure how this engine works with modding but making a game with mods is 100 possible

i think that dina (because she was angry because ellie left) told everyone she was immune and has a bite mark on her, and maybe kicked her out, or someone sees her other bite mark which she got while travelling to find abby and does the same thing, or with that other bite mark maybe if she kisses someone their immune or they turn? either way if their is a part 3 neil druckmann said he will have to go on to the lines and carry on the story from what they had so by keeping the same characters and some of the objectives. next thing you might know the people who captured abby and lev might try and come after jackson or the fireflies and if they come for jackson one of the main characters might end up dying because neil as well as say they have to keep the same things running he also said there has to be a little sad in the game. i truly hope it won’t be dina, ellie or tommy but if it was one of them i wouldn’t be surprised that it is. the last thing i wanted to say was is cat dead and if she wasn’t, will she cover up that bite mark ellie has and maybe the relationship of cat and ellie come back or maybe a dlc of ellie and cat because we didn’t know what cat looked like in tlou2 and we didn’t know riley in the last of us, but there was a dlc for riley and ellie maybe their will be one for cat and ellie and showing dina when she was younger and how ellie was doing when it was 2 years earlier.
Thank you I was confused by the endings
I commented this in a gamplay video with the pivotal scene shown.
I don’t think Joel can’t or shouldn’t be killed in a story, but how it went down is the real issue.
With how they ended him, I believe the best way to go about it was to show Joel being torn about how the first game ended. That he will do what he did all over again but is constantly reminded of the cost for him to live his life with Ellie (and Tommy). That way, with the years passing, he sort of accepts that one day he will meet his end at the hands of someone connected to the Fireflies in some way. So he is at peace with what happens to him. It will tie in with his strained relationship with Ellie when she found out.
To show the above with a bit of dialogue, once Abby reveals they are looking specifically for him, Joel Miller, he could say something to the effect of, “I knew you’d come eventually. Do your worst, just leave Tommy out of it.” Then Abby beats him up in a rage as Joel did not beg but was more concerned for others, than his own life. Her revenge ended up feeling empty in that respect, especially after Joel and Tommy just moments ago saved her life eventhough they didn’t know her or owe her anything.
And that’s when Ellie comes in not knowing what transpired and just seeing Abby deliver the killing blow. That starts Ellie’s own revenge path.
I think tweaking it to show more of Joel being eaten up by the consequence of what he’s done/his guilt would give more justification to his eventual demise.
This is just my thoughts on the matter. He can die in the story, just support it with better context or development.
I agree, it just wasn’t handled well. Joel’s death should make me angry, that much is true. But it shouldn’t leave such a sour effect on the rest of the game. I felt the story was just trapped in quicksand throughout the whole thing. At some points it started to crawl out but eventually just sank entirely.
Agree, "reason" is what makes a story believable, and all these situations and tension, still the readers are not able digest the conclusion is what breaks the immersion. Same thing happened with GoT .. 🥺
K.S 22 ive also been thinking about the lead up to the ending.
A part of me thinks that instead of Tommy, who is written to have survived a gunshot to the face, being there with Dina and Ellie, i think narratively, you could have used the father of Dina’s baby instead.
Say on the part where he and Tommy got shot, you could have cut the scene where Ellie and Dina thought the both of them were dead so they leave while licking their wounds. You then cut to the father waking up after recovering . You could say he wasrescued by a wandering group. They tell him he was the only survivor and that his male companion was already gone. He asks about the females and they tell him only the two of them were there. he now thinks Abby took Ellie and Dina with her. So Tommy searches for Abby, on his own destructive path. Narratively that would explain how the character is able to find out and tell Ellie Abby’s whereabouts.
Now, when the father (forgot his name, sorry) finds Abby and catches her off guard and has her at gunpoint, he goes on a rage asking, “where are they?!” And add some dialogue between the two. He finds out from Abby that she never killed or took them hostage and just let them go. She didn’t see the point to further bloodshed as it kept her feeling more and more empty inside (building up from when she killed Joel). Father leaves Abby where she is and looks for Dina and he finds them at that time where the game jumps (i think it was a year later after they encountered Abby).
The father reunites with Dina and his baby. They are all surprised to see that he is alive. He tells them his story and eventually comes around to where he found Abby and that he let her live.
Ellie finds out about this and gets angry at WHY he let her live. He explains that he sees no point as well in killing her as his main goal was to avenge his family. But they are alive and thats all that mattered to him. Getting revenge on Abby then just became pointless as what mattered more was being with his family.
Ellie rejects this and says she will go after Abby herself since he didnt have the guts to follow through. This creates the bigger rift with Dina then she gives her ultimatum to Ellie. “Dont go or she wont have anything to come back to...”
But Ellie still leaves, and this leads up to the ending but now with words from Dina and the father about what mattered more to them. At the same time, Abby’s words to the father of why she left Ellie and Dina alive that day.
I think that reinforces the theme that revenge is not the path to go down on. And the slow build up between Abby, Dina and the father informs Ellie of this, but she understands it too late... only after having lost her new family again with Dina and the baby.
Hopefully this long post made sense.
I think part II should never be made to be honest! they ruined the game as they ruined their reputation as a studio!!!
Well atleast the uncharted games ended the right way 😅
Really? I find 1st game boring and the end selfish and completely pointless . Part 2 has got way more depth and interesting characters along. Not Ellie nor Joel. I’d rather see a grown up woman character like Abby than spoiled brat of a girl like Ellie who makes most stupid choices knowing that they are wrong. But then again I’m not a die hard fan of a 1st game which was really nothing special. To me. Your mileage might vary.

I have a feeling part 3 may have to do with Ellie and Abby either finding the Fireflies that Abby made contact with together or separate and bring the Fireflies back to the top.

I heard that the actress who plays the voice of Abby is getting death threats and some people have been finding her in person and threatening her. I think sometimes people forget it’s just a game. The actress is not the character. It’s just like when Game Of Thrones fans were sending hate and death threats to the actress who plays Cersei just because of her character. Can y’all even separate reality from fiction anymore? 🙄 anyway the game was heartbreaking but I actually really appreciated the theme and the fact that we didn’t get everything we want, because that’s not how life works.
