  • Two trip reports for the price of one! Let's compare the domestic First Class experiences with Delta Air Lines and American Airlines.
The first flight is on a new Delta 737-900ER from ATL - PHX.
The second is on an older American A321 from PHX - DCA.
What do you think? Which is better?

The delta app is amazing. I was on a flight, sitting at the gate for maintenance issues. Literally was on the plane. It saw that I was going to miss my connection and automatically booked me on the next available flight and sent me a boarding pass without doing anything. However, with your video, you should have had two equal planes. These aren’t remotely the same level. You need to find a delta and AA flight that is the exact same plane made during roughly the same year. This is like comparing a 2000 Benz with a 2016 BMW.

I am a Concierge Key with American and fly well over 200,000 a year on them. Many years ago, I had top tier with Delta (also around 2 million miles) before switching to American because Delta was eliminating first class seats/service by expanding business class seats especially for international travel which had a negative impact on me. However, the past year with American has proved extremely frustrating between 737 MAX, mechanics slow down, etc. Presently I fly six days a week at this time of the year and I am experiencing flight delays on two-thirds of all flights which is costing me valuable business/work time. Your video appeared very fair and represents similar experiences especially with American’s inflight food. As with most of the major mergers, the American service has deteriorated since US Airways joined the company. Thank you for your effort to present a fair evaluation and know it was appreciated.

For me it's far and away Delta - but yes I've run into grumpy crews on occasion, probably inherited also from US Airways (also flew their product and paid full price to be snapped at the entire flight). My recent trips with AA had the most incredible crew member in first, but the food was dreadful for all three meals. And the lack of in flight entertainment along with NO outlets to charge your own was unacceptable. Their new product may be great, but the chances of not getting it makes me reluctant to book. Here's a trick for making your flight, no matter where you are sitting, more enjoyable: bring a bag of goodies for the cabin crew. Doesn't have to be much, but it is always appreciated.

We were served the signature warm mixed nuts and the beverage of your choice...I just had diet sprite, but alcohol was available. We had lunch served and I preordered the fruit and cheese plate, and it was perfect. Not too heavy, but filling enough. The warm cookies for dessert were delicious. I was actually able to recline, and napped during the flight. Unheard of for me!! The crew in first were just as described in the video...attentive, smiling, and helpful. I would def do AA again in first class!!

I had my first First Class experience with US Airways before they completely merged with American Airlines, and I WISH I could do that again. The crew were fantastic, and it was only a 2.5 hour flight from Charlotte to Nassau. I’ve recently resumed my First Class experience with American, and I’ve had just about all their domestic First Class Cabins. Really, the best one so far was my 2018 summer flight (again) to Nassau. My Winter Flight to Miami in the same year wasn’t great, but they get passes due to the political turmoil that occurred at that time.

I recently flew a 6-hour Delta flight but it wasn't in first class. I was overall happy with the experience on the Delta plane.
We flew another plane for about a 4-hour flight and those screens in our row were all out of service and not working. 3/4 through the flight they began to work again.
The 6-hour flight had nice food and wonderful blankets and pillows. The breakfast and other food was very delicious and the flight attendants were very helpful in assisting us. The snacks were good too. The only thing that was bad about that flight was they said they had two options for in-flight dinner. But, they didn't have the veggie wrap as they were supposed to have since the front of the plane got first to pick, and we in the back were pretty much the last ones to order, so they gave us the turkey wrap and we couldn't fight about it.
Both of these flights were very well and enjoyable thanks to helpful flight attendants and the flight's entertainment system. I was able to watch three movies through the entirety of the flight, and was able to sleep for about two hours. Overall, I would choose Delta over American any day. Even though I haven't flown on American, I have heard bad things about it and choose to never board an American Airlines flight.

Skoogy Woogy same man. Dad works as FSA for American and we’ve always had flight benefits (I’m now 18). We’ve flown with them ever since and never had any problems. Recently had a trip from la to euro and back (London, Paris) and the only problem we’ve ever encountered (and literally the only problem) was waiting at JFK for 24 hours for another plane because some dumbass really broke an emergency exit handle. We didn’t care that it took a day after all, we only had one gate change and it was the same flight and we rode first class. My dad’s and sister’s checked in luggage wasn’t lost and flight service always keeps us comfortable. People automatically assume it’s a bad airline overall, when it actually isn’t.

My husband works for Delta, and while they do have a good hard product as you say, every 1st class flight I have had with Delta the service was rushed, they just wanted the in flight portion to be done and picked up even if you are flying a good 4 hour leg where as an FA you have plenty of time to serve. AA however does have a better service in flight because on long flights I always feel like they indulge you and allow you time to enjoy what service they do have. My husband and I love the warm nut cocktail service prior to the meal. It gives us time to talk and become relaxed and ready for our meal when it is served. Delta doesn't even as you if you are ready to be served before they serve you, they just come at you with a tray and expect you to hurry up and eat so they finish their pick up and go to their jumpseats and rest. I am an old Delta flight attendant from the late 70s, there has been a lot of elegance lost in in-flight services. We use to serve on china and actual silverware, ice cream with caramel and chocolate sauce, whipped cream was a standard on ATL to LAX,,,,,,,not anymore!,,,,,,

Being an aviation enthusiast, I love JetBlue Mine cabin. It’s the best of all. The crews are very on top of what’s happening. The IFE is outstanding. And best of all the food is incomparable to Delta,American,Southwest. Delta with a close second is my other favorite. I work at a small airport on Long Island and they fly their CRJ-900’s in and two flights daily. I service those flights 6 days a week. Delta newer planes are nicer. Their older ones are sadly not. American does the same. JetBlue does not have a plane that small other than the EMB-700 which is still to big. In conclusion JetBlue mint is my favorite for those reasons.

Otherwise, I too believe the DL hard product outshines AA or UA any day of the week. Good review.

I greatly appreciate the review, while I am a die hard Delta fan, with a diamond medallion family member, I would like to point out some factors that may have swayed this review:
    1. If you are going to compare seats, you should be using the same aircraft. This A321 didn't have entertainment because it wasn't as new as the 2016 737.
    2. Although you gave a fair review, you were used to Delta, and flying American might have pushed you out of your "comfort zone". As a diamond on Delta, their aircraft are like second homes. So, you are more used to and accepting towards that environment. Maybe comparing two airlines that you don't travel on often would do the trick (Frontier and Spirit, United and American, and so on).
Overall, I appreciate the effort gone into this review, and while we all know Delta is better, you kept almost all bias out of it. I love this video, and will surely come back for more!

    • @StormyPeak
      @StormyPeak Před 6 lety

I've never flown, but I've seen videos of 1st class for long flights like with Korean Air...and their first class...is First Class! People get their own booth basically, that has a large monitor in it, and everything from movies to t.v. shows, or radio available. Seats that can recline into a bed,, and the FA makes the bed up for you.
There is custom lighting control in your private booth, and they offer a pouch fillled with things like lotions, after shaves, etc. The menus offer several selections and there is a large wine list. First Class even has a bathroom available that has a shower in it for those who wish to take one.
I watched a bit of the video above, and their first class doesn't even offer in flight entertainment? And the seating, looks like business class on the long flights of some of the Asian airlines.
So, is it because the USA trips in the above video were shorter in time, that they don't have all the luxuries I've seen on other videos of non-USA airlines where the flights can be like 10 to 20 hours? And again, I thought it was weird that they didn't offer even some kind of entertainment for their 1st class flyers.

Of all the US carriers, JetBlue Mint is the best 1st class. Delta One is great when you can actually find a route with one.

As a flight attendant with a regional airline, I have the opportunity to fly first class with both Delta and American. I've had amazing experiences on both. I will have to say I flew from Indy to Seattle on Delta and I will never forget it. Amazing crew, food, and flight attendants. I think it just depends on your crew, the plane, and honestly just the day.

Out of the three Delta, AA, United: Delta by a mile. Consistent hard product across the fleet, great wifi, great IFE, and the food is excellent quality. AA/United just do not compare. Some planes have IFE, some don't on those two. Seats felt more cramped (AA on their MAX product felt like Premium Economy not Business/First). Wifi on United was terrible, and mediocre on AA flights. Delta out of the three legacy carriers seems to have figured it out. AA/United seem to be trending LCC moreso than legacy

It all has to do with the crew and the product. Customer service will make or break.

Tate Tate agree, all planes are very confined space. When you have good people to work along w it makes it better but when you don't care for the people then you aren't able to put your best foot forward.

My personal rankings for the 3 legacy carriers used to be Delta, American, United. For me in the past 18 months United has upped their game and have nosed out Delta and exceeded American by a lot. I actually was amazed with United.

Only flown on American once and ended up driving the last leg of my trip due to a thunderstorm. All the other airlines resumed service within minutes of it passing but not American. The trip prior was with Delta. Great experience. Your video fits my take to the letter. I’ll not fly American again unless I have too.

I have not been able to fly on Delta One, but I did get to go on Delta Comfort+, which was a great experience! We got extra legroom and the 50% more reclining definitely helps with taking a quick rest. The On-Flight Entertainment Screen also helped me get through the flight. There were so many movies and shows to watch! The seats were kinda the same as economy but had a cool diamond pattern.
On the seat in front of you is an extra pocket to hold food and drinks. I found the staff a little strict though. I asked one of the FA's if I could have a drink, and she said in a stiff voice, "This cart only has food," and kept going on with her job. The other FA's seemed like they would rather be somewhere else. So, out of all of that, it was a good ride. 4/5 or 8.5/10 To the economy class, if you DO feel uncomfortable in coach, go ahead and use a little more of your money to buy Comfort+. It's totally worth it.

I fly Delta 100% of the time. I just wish they were more consistent with their culture. You never know what kind of mood the flight attendants will be in when you get on the plane. Nordstrom has a great philosophy when it comes to hiring for their stores. "We can teach you to sell but we can't teach you to be nice to people." I recently flew to San Diego and was wearing a sport coat and asked the flight attendant to check it for me when I got on. She looked at me like I asked to sit on the captains lap for the flight. But when I flew home a different flight attendant was so nice and said no problem at all and it was the same size plane.
