  • Rabbitt were a South African rock band formed in 1972, evolving from a band called The Conglomeration, consisting of members Trevor Rabin, Duncan Faure, Ronnie Robot, and Neil Cloud. Their successes included making it to the top of the South African charts with the hit "Charlie" in 1976. Rabbitt broke up in 1978. Rabin later became a member of Yes, and Faure went on to join the Bay City Rollers.

Fantastic song, my favourite Rabbitt number which I actually had on the original EP release from 1977. Thanks so much for uploading!

This was my no.1 top favorite band when I was a teenager in the 70s. So glad I found them today. I actually forgot the name. But wonderful to hear all of it again today. Cherish it.

I saw them at the old Avalon in Pietermaritzburg. Ta greatest band ta come outa ta land! Sent the audio to my son the other day. Asked him to guess who? His answer: the Beatles.

This is a really good song, a breezy pop/rock tune. Especially like Duncan's parts. Here in the US we (the very few of us who were Rabbitt fans) only got the first two albums.

I grew up the middle of 7 kids in Easton, Pennsylvania and shared a room with my older brothers Timmy and Eric, both enthusiastic music fans. We went to sleep to the radio and one late night we heard Rabbitt's "Hold On To Love" being played, but it wasn't announced and we had no idea who the band was. Timmy went crazy trying to find the song and pestered the radio station to speak to the DJ to find out the name of the band. He rushed out and bought Rabbitt's LP and became a huge fan. I later hooked up with a South African expat and was introduced to many other South African bands such as Tidal Wave and Ballyhoo.

@@yossarian6799 Great story, Yossarian. I heard Rabbitt for the first time during a break between programs on South Africa's shortwave broadcaster, Radio RSA, who played "Working For The People", which caught my ear as a thumping rocker. It was maybe 4-5 months later I saw the Boys Will Be Boys LP at a local record store. It didn't have "Working For the People", of course, but the songs on Boys Will Be Boys way more than made up for it (Hard Ride, Lifeline, etc.). Of course, Capricorn Records released the Croak And A Grunt In The Night LP a few months later and it had Working For The People on it. Of course, all of us in the US who knew about the band had no clue how popular this band was in SA. What in the world was a Dingley's Bookshop? I thought it was Duncan being creative, a la Paul McCartney. In reality, it was a theme for an SA TV show. Who'd a thunk? As for other SA bands, I didn't have all that much luck tracing any of them down, or even learning about them, until the internet hit. The US music press ignored South Africa, largely because of apartheid. I found just one LP by Stingray, which was released in the US, and that one was pretty good. And Juluka ("Fever"), which did get airplay on alternative radio in the 1980s. Tribe After Tribe's CD was released in the early 1990s.

Great song by Trevor Rabin, his guitar influence, aproach to composition, writing is immense. Go on Trevor! Fantastic is also a new LIVE album of you, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, recorded in Appolo.

This was scraping the barrel for Rabbitt - after 2 brilliant albums they released morning light and "I was 11" - Trevor was already keeping all his songs for his first solo album and went thru the motions with this song

Ian. I agree. They are exceptional. They had it all. Looks, talent . Very advanced for those years. Good quality music. I still enjoy it as much as I did those years as a teenager.

Yeah, it's a shame, actually. They definitely had the songs, writing ability, & playing talent, all of them. I don't even think their music broke the charts (or was released) in Australia, where they could have gone over well. Instead they're mostly SA's secret.

Can't say this was Rabbitt's strongest song - compared to Boys will be Boys or Croak & a Grunt - it sounds like going thru the motions song for Trevor - with Duncan sounding like he was gearing up to join the Bay City Rollers if you know what i mean - I can see why Trevor left the band soon after this release. He kept all his good songs for his solo album

    • @chriscampbell9191

I have a suspicion Trevor already had his eye on the door out when they were writing and recording this. There is a hint of that in his lines in the second verse.
