I don’t like luxury for the sake of luxury, and the communication around luxury irritates me a lot!
But I also think that analog Leicas are the best tools, and when their prices don't go crazy like the M6 for example, then it's worth it.
Nicos I understand why you prefer the M2 over the MP! I have a wonderful M4 from 1970-1971. It cost me «only» 700€, and I had it serviced completely for 350€. Now it’s as good as new. I had a M6 TTL before (wish I had waited to sell it when I see the prices now!😁), but I really prefer the M4. The main reason is the viewfinder. Before the M4-P the viewfinder was more accurate at working distances (2-3m), then the frame has been shrinked (so they could add the 28mm frame I heard…)
I also like the absence of the 75mm frame which disturbs the vision....
And I never liked the lightmeter on the TTL which ate too much battery… The Voigtlander VCII meter is as accurate and more battery efficient. And if one day it doesn't work anymore I'll be glad it's not part of the camera. I like the camera to be only mechanical.

I agree 100% Nico, the M2 is a lighter, better camera. Great with Leica's simple grip. great if you use 35mm. M3/MP too heavy with brass plates. M2 has uncluttered and single frame lines for 35 & 50. You can take it up to Harlem past midnight and not worry about the old M2, the film advance is buttery smooth. They can easily be serviced. The go on forever. Unfortunately, folks have caught on and their prices are now 1500/2000+ and rising - get one while you can!

MP only becomes more reasonable to get since used Leica M camera prices skyrocketed online. Main advantage of the MP is the fixed rangefinder patch which avoids the rangefinder patch flare of the M6.

The reason I still shoot film, apart from the craft and physicality, is because I love using my OM1 and OM2 cameras. Finally pulled the trigger on an MP after lusting after it for years but after using it for a while I ran into the same dilemma as you! I picked up my M6 TTL again and just found the large shutter dial to be so much nicer, and the way it turns in the same direction as the meter arrows is also more intuitive. The main issue I have with the MP is that it feels too dainty and jewel like. It’s machined so perfectly that you get a bit scared to shoot with it. M6TTL on the other hand feels like a no nonsense tool. Ended up keeping the MP though, as it still can be repaired.

I shoot with the Leica M3 (double-stroke). I have looked at the M-P and the M-A, partially for the brighter, modern viewfinder, and the ability to shoot 28mm & 35mm without an external viewfinder. However, they removed the self-timer on the M-P and M-A, yet retained a frame-line selector lever. To me, that is idiotic. I actually use the self-timer to take pictures of myself with my kids. I don't have a frame-line selector on my M3, and I have absolutely never thought "Oh man, I would really like to be able to see those frame-lines without taking off my lens or putting a different one on." If they hadn't done that, I would be way more tempted by the M-P and M-A.

I think you'd be hard pressed to get a good condition M2 for €500. Cheapest on UK eBay at the moment is £800 (€900) and Irish eBay about €900. I'd recommend factoring in another €150 for a potential partial service if you get it off eBay. (I'm lucky to have a camera repair shop around the corner. More if you have to ship it.) You may not need it but better to be prepared. So for an M series Leica to actually use regularly I'd say someone should budget at least €1,000 + a lens. You could always get a IIIf with a Russian lens though ;) Of course now you've featured the M2 prices will hike again :)

I've got one of the most boring M2 variants as well. Lever rewind, silver finish, self timer, absolutely nothing special. Would I love to have a black painted one with no self timer? Sure. But I can shoot this one as I like and not care about how it looks or what happens to it. I don't have to baby it at all, top plate has some serious corrosion (was left on a shelf by the previous owner with the clip on light meter) and maybe I'll get it refinished in black enamel sometime but seriously, who cares? It'll look better for sure but it won't become a better camera by any means.
About that clip on meter, mine came with a working MR4. One unexpected experience I had with that meter is that it forces me to think of the exposure settings and how the light looks in the scene before I lift the camera to my eye. I was going through the same with my Rollei and Hasselblad but had never noticed that, probably because I never bring those to my eye, heh. The super clear viewfinder of M2 with no distracting paired frame lines with no exposure info underneath is more attractive to me than an MP, M7 or M6 because while I'm looking through the finder, all I have to care about is the composition and the moment. To me, this is what makes M2 so much more fun to use than most other cameras, including quite a few other Leica M cameras.
