    I’m a mom! About 6 years ago, I lost my parents and 2 of my 3 younger brothers in a carbon monoxide accident. I had to go through their stuff and get rid of things and it was an eye opener for me, just realizing that in the end, items are just items, and what is important is the time we have here on earth and how we spend it. I love your quote, “consume memories, not items,” because it’s so true! I’m still on my minimalism journey and I find inspiration from watching your videos. Thank you so much! Love from Idaho! 😊

      Adagio Borntrager I will suggest good bed mattress and linen. Hotel white towels (Sams has really good ones for $7) its easier to watch with bleach. My old color towels smells and look bad. Kitchen knifes will make your life and wife’s life way easier. I had for years cheap knifes and it took me longer and was a pain in the neck to use. Also Sams has really good ones a pack of maybe six or more for $59. And no i don’t work in Sams but i shop there frequent. Plain white plates and cups (I bought those at dollar tree) but i had it for years and are good quality for the price. I find it easier to my mind to clean than all those colorful different dishes. A nice simple comfortable couch and curtains that helps reduce the heat in summer and cold in winter. I know there is more stuff but hope this helps and that is from my experience. Good luck.

    It's simple for me - I naturally get anxiety and become extremely overwhelmed in crowded, messy environments. This especially intensified after my last pregnancy. I'm one of those moms who puts away toys several times a day. As my family always ends up living in tiny spaces, I strive to create a perfect balance of having everything we need and still keeping it cutely minimal. And I definitely agree - when you know exactly where everything is and don't hold on to anything you don't love, you do sleep more peacefully!

    My wardrobe is HUGE!! My biggest problem is that I haven't grown since middle school (I'm 5'1 and 20 years old), so I still have items from long ago that I never got rid of because they still fit and were still in good condition. As of late I've been more aware of how my style has drastically changed and I've been allowing myself to say goodbye to some old pieces that I had mislabeled as "sentimental" just because I'd had them for so long. I may not have grown in size but I have in every other way, and it's long overdue to get rid of some old clothes.

    • @amirahmuhammad5813
      @amirahmuhammad5813 Před 4 lety

      I definitely feel you on this! I'm 4'11 and 22. I only shop for new clothes maybe once a year (sometimes not at all honestly) but my wardrobe was big because I NEVER grew out of anything. It's smaller now cuz I got into the habit of decluttering my wardrobe every now and then, and when I first decluttered I couldn't believe how much stuff I'd had since middle school and high school that I still wore cuz they fit. I decided to just donate things I didn't wear often because they were just wasting space if they fit but I never wore them cuz I got tired of them over the years 💁🏾‍♀️

    • @raapyna8544
      @raapyna8544 Před 4 lety +1

      I'm 171 cm = 5 ft 7" but I haven't grown much either since I was 14. I had my clothes from back then in my closet when I started minimalism (two years ago) and I tried them on, they fit, but it felt like I went back in time, into beeing that insecure little teen again, so I let go of it. I'm 23 now.

    I am currently pregnant with my first baby and I found your channel while looking for ways to have a minimalist baby. I started slowly becoming minimalist over the last year or so. I still have a long way to go, and it's sometimes hard because my husband likes to save things for "just in case" But I am proud of every progress I make. We have purchased our first home in September and that's when I found the highest need to declutter and make my home open brings and clean. I also have a problem with being OCD so I'm trying to be careful with easing into minimalism instead of triggering myself. I am really enjoying your channel, than you for sharing with all of us!

    I'm becoming more and more minimal in my house because I grew up with a hoarder. My teenage years, it was so bad there was only a pathway to walk in each room. My parents could've been in the show Hoarders for sure. It was stressful growing up in.
    Having less, having organization, seeing clean empty spaces keeps me from those memories and feelings of feeling trapped in "stuff"
    Thank you for your channel, it's helped me stay on track and I don't feel so crazy for wanting less or for getting rid of things that are no longer useful to me. ❤️

    I just learned minimalism with you, according to my own experience I am single and I have been living alone for 7 years, I have observed after these years that I have a lot of stuff that overloads my home space that remains a small apartment (in the kitchen, in my closet, my office....). This is where I decided to get rid of all the superfluous things that don’t really help me (one of the rules I set for myself is to get rid of everything I haven’t used in a year). It allowed me to gain space, storage, and as you said in the video, the shadowy areas in my apartment have shrunk more and more. So thank you for bringing me this lifestyle of less consumption and finally it will be beneficial for our planet that we must bequeath to our children

I know that this is what I need to do, but sometimes I feel really overwhelmed and get stuck. Your explanations and tips definitely help me see it more clearly. I’m hopeful it will work out and I’ll get to a better place.

    I’ve always been drawn to a minimal lifestyle and very quickly feel trapped and suffocated by “things”. However usually my husband and I go on holiday and spend 6 days out of 14 shopping. We get absorbed and addicted and consumed in consuming.
    Last Christmas we were travelling to the UK from our home in Kenya and I told my husband and my whole family (for accountability) that my only purchases on that holiday would be a pair of shoes and a coat (both which I desperately needed). I came away from that holiday feeling free. Feeling like no time was wasted. Feeling I’d enjoyed more time with family and more time on “experiences” - and feeling so happy buying only what I needed.
    I’m currently spending time working towards this lifestyle, and in how free I already feel I know it is definitely for me!

    I have started embracing the ideology when i first found out i was pregnant. It has been a very positive experience for me, but nobody i know has the same mindset. So whenever other moms hear me say i dont want plastic toys or that we dont need this extra fancy stuff i just get laughed at and i ofter get the "your child is still too young. Wait a few years." I hope this isnt true, because living with less and being super selective of what you have has had a very positive feedback in my life. 🙂

      Think it's definitely possible! We went from having all that to minimalism and the kids have become much more into sports and being with friends and talking. They declutter stuff and clothes and toys for the less fortunate and have less but cooler stuff. So it helped us out for the better.

      I think the younger they are when you start minimalism, the easier it will be. The easiest if they're born to it.
      I think it's easier for a kid to not get everything they ever want, than get it and have to get rid of it one day. Plus they will grow up to hate cleaning if they have too much. That's what happened to me.
      The toy catalogues that come before christmas are the worst. They put this picture in kids' heads that they want everything that's in there, and that they aren't allowed to want the "wrong" toys. (Boys' and girs' sections separated) It's best to just block mail adds. Here in Finland you can just put a sticker "no adverts please" on your mail box or door and you won't get any.

    Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am a medical student who puts lots of importance not only to physical health but to mental health as well. Yesterday, May 7th, I decided to start a minimalist lifestyle. I decluttered all of my room. Took me 2 days to finish it. I have to say, I cried letting go off things that no longer served me. I think is hard to deal with the fact that we often buy things with an illusion, and it takes a lot to realize that, we were wrong. We aim for good feelings, not good stuff. After filling up 5 bags with old gifts, things I didn't even know that they existed and stuff that other people may actually need, I have to say I feel more complete than ever before. It feels great that the most important things we actually have them inside of us, like our emotions, thoughts, dreams and memories. Beginning a minimalist lifestyle makes you realize all the lies you've believed in your past, but the feeling you've been able to escape that has no price. Thank you for being true to yourself and inspiring others to do the same for them. I watched some of your videos before taking this decision. You rock!

We have moved frequently with the military, done foster care, homeschool, etc... all ways that can cause us to accumulate or save quite a bit. I felt burdened by stuff a few years ago and am still on this journey to have less. With everything donated or sold or given a new home, I feel just a bit lighter! I love seeing empty spaces and watching how my kids use their imaginations to free play and devour books. I am a wife and mother who likes to be organized and am somewhat of a minimalist, although I do like to decorate with a few things for the seasons to have something new to look at. The difficulty lies in the fact that my husband is sentimentalist about his stuff, buys stuff just because it is on sale, and didn't have much growing up, and buys things that he might use one day. He doesn't care too much about being neat and tidy so it often leaves me frustrated. I have learned to let my need for order relax somewhat over the years since he doesn't seem to want to change.. And so I do what I can. I appreciate the fact that you and your husband can agree on this sort of uncluttered lifestyle!

    The lord recently forced me into minimalism after I discovered your videos. I entertained the idea for a while because I was so tired of just having to worry about our storage unit and not having access to my stuff for the last 2 years due to moving a lot and living in a small space. Our storage unit got auctioned off. I was honestly upset at first but a few moments later I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I do wish I was able to get some clothes and shoes before that happened but I know that if it didn’t happen that way I would’ve never let go of my stuff. All things can be replaced and I intend to consume more responsibly, intentionally, and sustainably this time around 🙏🏽

It hurt a bit at first but got easier and it was so freeing !! We still have plenty to keep us well clothed, comfortable and fed. I love having half-empty shelves and cupboards that aren’t groaning with their contents. About two years ago I saw a documentary about minimalism and it kind of hit me. Too many things around me destroy my ability to focus, steel my time and also my money. It was almost enlightening. So I slowly started decluttering my home - our home. I am a mom of two and I never talked about it with my family. I just started my way. And it felt soooo good, still does! My hubby is a born minimalist as Sarah mentioned 😆 So he liked it very much when I started decluttering. We still never talked about it, I just changed my mindset and did what followed out of that. After this two years my kids reduced out of themselves asking for new things to buy. They embraced the idea of repurposing items, go thrifting (find treasures no one else has) without even realizing it. Even my hubby went a few steps with me without even knowing. What I am trying to say is: I want to encourage you to just start if you feel to. It’s contagious, you‘ll see. People feel that it’s doing them good.
    Sarah, thank you so much for always be an inspiration on my way since I‘ve found your channel.

      Stainless steel or cast iron.
      A good cast iron pan especially can last generations which is very sustainable in itself.
      Treat and wash it properly, and it will even be kind of non-stick if you use enough oil.
      But all specifically non-stick pans are made to not last, to be scratched accidentally and thrown away.

    I wish you would do more sponsorships that are size inclusive! I would love to support you and click on those link and even buy merch. But for example Aritzia is no where near close to being inclusive. The have xxs but not an xxl and it makes me feel like I’m not good enough to where these people clothes. Hardly any good quality clothing stores can make sizes that fit me. So it’s so hard for me not to shop fast fashion and shop for clothes so much because the clothes I do buy fall apart like every 3 months and it makes me feel so bad but these companies don’t want/care about plus size girl or even men. My husband and I are on our journey, along with two kids, trying to find out, how many things we want in our house. We had a hard time the last two years and I often felt overwhelmed. My husband is originally a collector. So were his parents. His father died a year ago, his mom moved from a house to an apartement. He ended up emptying the house. The final day was today and there was so much stuff in it that ended up in the trash... it was and is eye-opening. One neighbour came over and said, that he starts to declutter because he does not want that his children will have to do the same and I am ver grateful that he learned also just by seeing my husband struggle with it. We still have a way to go but I am really looking forward to it. Sme decisions are not easy but I work my way through my stuff. I also like the mindset of minimalism and living more sustainable.

It feels so good when i get stuff out of the house. I haven't missed 1 item as yet. I have marie kondoed my wardrobe but i think its time to attack it again. I am also currently going through the kids rooms 1 by 1 and donating alot, making a box of things i think they won't miss. Put it away for while in the garage and see how it goes. If they dont ask for it. I will donate.
