Emmylou is a stand alone legend. Her angelic voice, on stage demeanor, incredible work ethic and, not to mention, her extraordinary beauty, makes her (in my humble opinion) one of the two, truly great female progressive country/bluegrass/folk artists ever to grace the stage. The other is Alison Krauss. There are many other excellent female artists such as Dolly, Patsy Cline, Carrie Underwood, and too many more to add to this list. That said, Emmylou and Alison are my hands down favorites.

Me 'n' thee, Jim Gregory : I fantasized through my twenties that somehow and some way, Emmylou and Miss Ronstadt would drive through Wytheville, VA, and fetch me - in a convertible, of course - so's the three of us could drive cross-country, mostly at night and always under moon-bright clouds, passing the wine and harmonizing in three parts on whatever came over the radio. Yeah, she was singing to ME and making those vain promises....

Wow...the collage of images of Emmylou as this youthful voice filled my ears quickened my pulse...such intimate beauty is rare...such soul reaching honesty as found in Emmylou's lyrics is even more rare. Emmylou Harris paid homage to any artist she every covered...and she honored every audience she ever performed before with her graceful, honest intimacy.

And record it. Merle did and then woke up again later the next morning wanting to do his vocals again. Willy told him the song was already on its way to New York. There is another Merle video where he tells that he doesn’t remember doing the recording the first night. And there you have it.
