For your tape, the 720 x 480 output has the incorrect aspect ratio. The people look "skinny" because the pixel aspect ratio has been altered. in addition, there are huge vertical black bars on both side of the video. The correct choice was 640 x 480. One other thing I wish you had shown was the custom settings that would show under the audio tab.

Here is something to think about. I want to capture my family VHS videos in HD1080p format. I purchased the Elgato Video Capture device along with a couple different up scalers. I also purchased the Elgato HD60 Pro. Now the question , is it worth upscaling when most of my family and friends will just be using their phones to view the videos.
I did several captures with the Elgato Video Capture , and yes looking at them from my 32” UHD monitor was not that impressive. Then I sent a few videos to my iphone 13 Pro and I was thinking not too bad for 640x480 - same with 720x480. I did use S-Video for my source.
I plan to experiment a little more before I decide which way to go .

Video game signals are strange, I did dive into that a little, and I found that some of the game manufactures did some "tricks" with their signals to make the analog TV's back in the day do "fun" stuff. Those "tricks" can play havoc with some of the cheaper upscalers. There are some specific upscalers that are meant for video game consoles, but they are not cheap, one that I looked at was the "OSSC SCART" for $139. Do some research on OSSC - Open Source Scan Converter, then welcome to the rabbit hole.. :) thanks for watching

When capturing, I noticed that the sides of the video is not neat. What I mean by that is on the sides of the image, there is black foggy strips (very small). Overall, it looks like the video is not framed correctly. I tried all 3 preferences, looks like the lowest does not do that. Is it the tape that is faulty ? Like for instance the tape you show in the video, it's a perfect neat square. Imagine if on the sides, you would see black strips moving as the tape plays

    • @MiddleSiggyHomestead
      @MiddleSiggyHomestead  Před rokem +1

Antoine, generally that might be because the analog video is not clean, to your point, on an old TV you would not see the actual edge because it would chop it. Because the device is over scanning the image you get everything in the signal. A way you could make clean edges is use a crop in a video editing software.

For an upscaler. you would get an upscaler, (watch my video on that) then go from your VCR to the upscaler, that will convert the video to 1080p then you would want something like the Elgato HD60X which is an external device, and then you can use OBS Studio to save the HD resolution videos on your system.

I have not directly with the Elgato, or when I use a decent upscaler, but I have read about when you have dropped frames the sound could get out of sync depending on the number of frames dropped. This could happen for a number of reasons, but when I watch a single video I do not notice this. But I will say, when I tried to line up the multiple videos (for example the 320x240 the 640x480) next to each other, I did notice the videos would get just slightly off sync from each other, but not my much.. I think this is due to the dropped frame issue I am describing. Hope that helps..

It's because your PC is running slow. The usual culprit is dust in the CPU cooler. It could be a slow hard drive. It's best to use an internal one separate from your OS drive, really, so it's not busy.

It's not the CPU, it's the elgato software, while capturing everything is synced, but sometimes will mess up when putting video and audio together in the final step. I don't capture full tapes in one take anymore because of that, I do 30 min then stop, check the result if I have to go back and try to capture some section again. It's a pain in the ass, I would recommend another capture device that you can use with OBS directly.

@rubenthehuman it's because frames are being dropped in the video conversion process because the CPU is too slow. Don't be tempted to record at 60fps if the original is 30fps it just makes it worse.

@@sang3Eta it's impossible that my cpu is too slow, any cpu from the last 10 years is enough to run this, and there are no other processes interfering. It's because of inconsistencies in the tape, once it hits some point where the VCR loses tracking there is a good chance the audio will end up out of sync. With some of my VHS it happens consistently at certain points. While capturing it creates some temp "timeshift" files, so I imagine it uses that to sync the audio when creating the final result. The syncing seems more consistent when capturing using OBS or virtualdub.

Is it any better than the cheaper ebay ones?

When you say ebay ones... If you are getting the same product from ebay, I would assume it is the same. If you are referencing other devices, I would say I don't know, it depends on the other device and its software.
If you check out my other video where I compared a few of the different products, I will say "Yes" the Elgato device is the better option. The software is better, the encoding (codec) is better, and the video quality is better.
I have not put out the deep dive into the other cheap version of the other device I tried, but I was very disappointed.. If it were 1990, I might have given it better marks, but compared to today. Go with the Elgato or better.. hands down.

Thanks for the question.. Have a great day

@TheFurrry I suggest get some old second hand capture devices which performed better than this Elgato Card because sometimes things can go wrong like captured in different fps and drivers issues.

Hello Siggy have you ever done a comparison video for the Elgato capture device here vs the pro or external capture card? Torn between these two devices. It’s about $200 for the external card I need for my Mac

Personally the capture cards and the upscale do a much better job as they will capture at 60FPS and the picture was always cleaner. I would go with the upscale and a capture card over the Elgato usb device if I had the budget. Which is where I ended up personally.

So I have had better luck with the upscalers and the capture card. Mainly because they capture at 60FPS and seem to remove the interlace which makes the video look smoother. I was still impressed with the USB Elgato device, but I choose to ultimately stick with the upscaler and the capture card. Hope that helps
