To reach patients who prefer to engage in Spanish, the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), with support from AstraZeneca, created the 70-page Spanish guide that supports Latino patient and family education on prostate cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment options, and self-care throughout treatment and beyond. The guide is based on PCF’s existing, comprehensive, science-based materials and was created in collaboration with prostate cancer experts who are native Spanish speakers.
“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Latino men, comprising more than one in five of all new cancer diagnoses and contributing to nearly 2,000 deaths annually,” said PCF President and CEO Charles J. Ryan, MD. “Our mission is to continuously find more ways to deepen patient education to help increase better health outcomes for all. This guide is just one step in an ongoing effort to increase community awareness and most importantly, action!”
One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Latino men are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer, and research indicates that they are less likely to receive optimal treatment. Lifestyle factors, also known as social determinants of health, play a significant role in cancer risk, health equity, and outcomes. Although PCF has made considerable advances in addressing disparities in prostate cancer through education, research, and treatment over the past 25 years, more work needs to be done.
