    Hey, didn't Gwenpool use her over-the-top reality warping powers to retcon herself into a mutant? She gets to hang out on Kraokoa. Seems like a double standard.

    • @LeavanDragon
      @LeavanDragon Před 3 lety +36

      Tldr:
      Due to the her meta powers allowing her existence to shift, gwen became a mutant due to her retconning her entire life to fit the marvel comics world. Xavier literally cannot tell she isn't a mutant because as of her current status, she is one literally in "continuity". Her powers work different from Franklin. Basically she rewrote herself into the world as mutant.
      Long answer:
      Actually that's different. If you actually read gwenpool then you'd know what she did was change her backstory on a meta level. Unlike Franklin, who simply reality warped his cells to model that of an X gene, Gwen's history literally changed her continuity to where she was a literal mutant like any other.
      Read her comic, Gwen's powers are largely based in narrative and meta logic. She literally became a mutant because that's how the comic book world could rationalize her abilities and backstory. That's why she nearly went insane when Kamala was rationalizing her abilities and existence. Before that moment, she quite literally an unstable anomaly with no clear history in comics due to how she existed.
      It's not so much a double standard, as it is Xavier has no way of knowing she was never really a mutant unless her backstory changes again, retconning her status.

    • @LeavanDragon
      @LeavanDragon Před 3 lety +5

      @@mattd923 If he read her mind it could honestly depend on how gwen responds and how Charles attempts to rationalize what he sees. He may look into Gwen's memories, seeing how jumbled up they are, and come to the same conclusion as Kamala. Since it's already known that poeple around Gwen can cause her backstory to change, plus with her meta knowledge, it would he interesting if on accident she retconned her history again, while also creating a villain on accident.
      I believe thus because there are two possibilities in my mind:
      A. Xavier rationales that Gwen may still be a mutant but she's been twisted mentally and us being manipulated by an outside force. Given how defensive Krakoa is of mutants, they'd try to solve this and find a cause.
      B. He finds out she isn't a mutant, but cannot prove it, unlike in the way he did Franklin, since Gwen due to her powers was "born" a mutant in her backstory. She'd probably he stuck in a limbo, under suspicion until they figure out what's going on. I could easily see that being a story in itself about the entire island trying to capture gwen, while figuring out what she wants.
      It's interesting to think about, since both situations could put her under enough stress to cause a "retcon shift" as I would call it. After all, technically based on the last retcon she had, Gwen's mutant ability was reality warping(I think thats what Kamala rationalized atleast). She could easily go omega level on by exploiting her metapowers on the narrative and characters around her. It would all depend on the writer.
      We probably won't see that though, unless Hickman acknowledges gwenpools existence on Krakoa and incorporates it into current events.

    I think a sore point for me is that we kinda already did this song and dance with Wanda, a supremely powerful individual, not being a mutant either and neither changes seem to be about furthering these characters' development imo and more about a kind of uninterest Marvel seems to be having for a very long time.

      I don't think so, I think making Franklin not a mutant is a good thing. Honestly Franklin could and would become a handwavy explanation out of any issues that the X-Men would come across, which would drop him into the realm of bad writing(like how Marvel tends to use Time travel to fix problems). Honestly this keeps him separate from that and allows the Fantastic four to keep telling compelling stories about the loss of his powers.
      It's also possible that this could come back and be a plot point with the X-Men at some point, and we really don't know at the moment.(Maybe Xavier's realization of this could be manipulation by the one of Apocalypse's children whose power is that she can't lose, because otherwise Franklin would make her lose.)

    it matters because it made a character deeper. it created a background rift in F4, it meant that Franklin has another "place" and he can decide in the future to leave his family for his people.
    it created a stake for F4 family in mutant affairs, so if anything questionable happens to the mutant community, it has implications for F4 through Franklin. It meant that Franklin can get into a conflict between F4 interests and mutant interests.
    and they never really explored any of that and they _just_ started to explore that now... and they axed all of that at the root right away.

Obviously, mutants aren't real, but I like when the universe is more cohesive and tied together when they are mentioned literally anywhere else besides in an xmen setting. It's kinda crazy that more superheros unaffiliated with the x men don't have mutants in their family. Not only did I like the aspect of him as a mutant setting him truly apart from the rest of the FF, but Hickman's X-men run has made such a point of how Franklin is a mutant and his relation to others on Krakoa. What was the point of the FF and X-men four part crossover? Beyond some dope art, was that story a waste of time?
      Comics and their characters constantly change and revert back then change again. I expect that and so I read and invest my time in what I like at the time, with no ill feelings towards the ones that I'm not quite liking. It just feels like, with this 'small' change, certain aspects of character development have been thrown out of the proverbial window.

If Marvel is having Charles only allow mutants with naturally occurring x-genes on Krokoa then he has a serious problem. To begin with Mr Sinister is not a natural mutant - Apocalypse genetically altered him into a mutant. This also brings into question the legitimacy of Xavier himself as he lost his powers on M-Day but only restored them by entering the M'Kraan crystal. For all intents and purposes, he can't be sure if his powers are of mutant or cosmic origin now.

    Plus Franklin as a mutant was pretty much the last current person you could use as Xaviers original dream...co-existence. Ok so you could say the fantastic for represents different parts of the universe. Reed represents space and time stretching all over. Johnny being the energy/stars/suns. The Thing being the planets the ground/land/asteroids etc. Then Sue as idk gravity, light or something of that sort. In that case what would Franklin represent. My guess is matter

He’s apex mutant because of his origins with the control rod. It tied nearly together to me. But to your point: why do two normal people have mutant children?

      Pietro can be considered a mutant, but Wanda can't IMHO, because Wanda is part Elder God/Demon, as Chthon implanted a fragment of his soul inside her at birth. She's not a true mutant as she is marked by a demon.

    Whenever people are trying to get I to Marvel comics and they ask about the timeline, or how long heroes have been around in the modern era, I only have one response.
    How old is Franklin Richards now?
    Also, it makes perfect sense that the in-universe editor edited himself at some point. However, Professor X was a really poor choice to tell Franklin about what he did. They should have sent Kitty.

    You know this opens up a whole new can of worms. Because this is the second time that Marvel has went back and stated that a mutant wasn't a mutant. My understanding of what a mutant is, is a person born with powers. Wanda and Pietro Maximoff was originally considered mutants. Then Marvel decided since they wanted to use them in the MCU and couldn't use mutants in the MCU, they would change it. Pretty soon, I bet we find out that Wolverine isn't a mutant. He was just a delusional individual until Weapon X put him through the procedures that gave him his powers. I mean seriously Marvel, step away from the mutants and no one gets outraged. Franklin was born with powers. You came up with mutant to have a lazy way to explain a hero with powers without an origin story. So, just leave them as mutants. Eventually you're going to get the movie rights back. Just like Thanos, it's inevitable.
