- Shizuka Anderson (@shizukadayo) is an Asian Canadian TV and Online presenter, was born and rasied in Canada to a #Japanese mother and a #Canadian father, came to Japan 10 years ago to pursue her interest in the entertainment industry. She now makes regular appearances on NHK WORLD-JAPAN and on Tokyo Creative News CZcams channel and also has many collaborations with other well known CZcamsrs around the world. I grew up in Japan as Hafu. So I never had an internal issue with it. I feel like I had a special privilege being Hafu... I get to walk the line of being American and Japanese. I get a peak under the curtain but not bound by the issues with Japanese culture. There is a reason my Japanese mother wanted to leave Japan and as I get older I see those reasons more and more. Don’t get me wrong, I feel a extremely strong pull to be in Japan... I truly am half in my mind. I’m always half mentally in Japan and half mentally in America. If I could I’d just live half the year in Japan and half in America.

I didn’t know being half is a big thing in Japan while in the Philippines, they’re open minded about it and speaking the language is a huge plus.

Purely out of fascination, (being interested in languages and history), and not meaning to offend, I always try to figure out people's racial and cultural background from their physical features, accents, and names. All these aspects tell your story, and it reflects not only your own but your predecessors' history, for better or for worse. Knowing your own history is part of knowing thyself. Of course some people are very proud of their heritage, and some aren't particularly conscious of it.
Ideally, people should accept you for who you are regardless.
