My Japanese is a little rusty but I didn't get a feeling that he was getting fake laughs at all. Sounded more like they thought he was a giant goofball, which he is. And frankly, Sonny's comedy is pretty mild for Japan, which is like the slapstick capital of the world. The more absurd and goofy, the better.
I'm guessing they were enjoying it the whole time.
