    I sold my 2015 STI to make room for my 2021 Carrera S , only so much garage. I missed that car from the day I sold it. Found a 2018 with 19000 miles on it that I'm picking up tomorrow . My 911 has 450 hp and is awesome in every way, but there's something about the STI that makes it equally as enjoyable as the 911. Probably part of it is I'm not quite as paranoid that someone will smash in to me. I also have a 07 STI that is a total blast to drive. The 07 is like an overgrown go kart. I love STI's.

I'm also a Hot Wheels collector and that's actually how I got introduced to the Subaru Impreza STi. Beautiful Diecast by the way! Flash forward to 2022, and I'm sure you join the World in the hugely-disappointing new exterior styling and generic interior lol Sadly, Subaru has jumped the Shark and watered down the original recipe. Just like how the last good BMW 3-Series was the E90 era and the last good Infinity sedan was the G37, before Nissan ruined the steering feel in the Q Series with the steering-by-wire system.

    I test drove a limited last year and it's very tempting to get it over the base. I'm not sure if these hater comments have actually test drove one because the throttle is sensitive and you can accelerate quickly with it. I found myself being at 4K RMP quickly. I don't think there is understeer, you just gotta know how to drive the right car right.
    And if you guys think about it, all that 305hp is split to 4 wheels. If it's only rwd at this set up. That's easily 400+hp.
    The clutch is butter!!!

    Good job Matt. Good to see you back in an STI. You can tell you miss it man. You talk about those smaller turbos and I agree they are so much easier to live with as the power is available almost instantly.The STI is a dog if you are not in the right gear (not to piss off the STI guys- after all I have owned 2 and loved them).Bottom-line the STI is dated but still has a certain charm and a special place in my heart.Either way great review. Great review Matt. Just got a crystal black 2017 WRX MT for a daily driver and did both the COBB stage 1 93 and MA Performance stage 1 tunes. I love it but I am regretting not going with the STI. I feel that the WRX needs a stiffer, suspension and sharper handling. Coming from a 2011 BMW 3 series coupe, I miss that awesome, stiff and flat handling. I think the STi would have filled the bill better. I would have gotten rid of that rear wing though, its a bit too much for me.

      I know someone who has a 2015 WRX but spent a week with a 2015 STI. He hated the STI. Bad roads that did not upset the WRX too much, caused major issues with the STI. I guess due to the STI's stiffer suspension. Now if you don't have to drive on bad roads a lot, STI could well be a good fit.

    I don't care what anyone says about this beast I'm still in love with it and I rather have this over the boring af Golf R. The RS is cool I'm just not a Ford guy and the CTR is way too flashy and its FWD. People get too focused on horsepower, torque, 0 to 60, etc. This car is about fun. Who cares about the numbers. Most people won't be tracking so it really doesn't matter anyway. 300 to 350 HP is plenty for public roads. My only gripe with the STI is fuel economy. If the next gen STI has 300 HP, the rumble, and better fuel economy I'd buy one.

      They are very fun cars. Unfortunately, when and if you mod them with performance upgrades, the engines tend to develop problems or fail. Only downside to the STi is if you do anything other than bolt ons; i.e. bigger turbo, injectors, cam, you have to build the entire engine with forged internals or it will go BOOM!

    Kinda glad I got a 17’. Base STi with the upgrade pack. Harmon kardon sound system, keyless entry and nav. Now they just get you with the seats and keyless. I personally don’t notice a difference in the Recaro to the stock seats. I’m 6’7”. The sunroof doesn’t agree with me lol

    The STi is one of the 4 vehicles that I am evaluating now as I will be in the market in the next 6 months. Personally I prefer a little of understeer than oversteer.
    As of the highly anticipated 2020 model which has never been officially announced by Subaru, I strongly suspect it will be a hybrid because of the overall market direction. The current STi, the Civic Type R, and the Focus RS might be the last of the affordable sports cars.

    Some of the reasons I'm considering this car is due to safety, AWD, Manual, reliability and its the only sports sedan that holds its value for resale, its crazy how some of these cars can have high mileage 80,000+ and still be worth over $20,000. Correct me if i'm wrong but what other vehicle holds its value that well in the same category.....other vehicles i'm considering are 4runner, tacoma(i know there are not in the same class but its between these 3).

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 Před 5 lety

      None in that class, with the possible exception of the Civic Type R, which probably will also hold a high resale value (but still too early to tell.) In stock form, the cars are usually reasonably reliable if cared for well and the owner understands the things that this engine absolutely hates. However, if not treated well or not maintained correctly, engine issues are very common. If you are considering used, it is worth every penny to have an independent and competent Subaru performance shop perform a PPI with a compression/leak-down tests, especially because the cost of replacing a short block in these is much more expensive than most cars due to more labor hours when working with its boxer engine.

    If you want some short gearing, drive a Mazdaspeed Miata. 3rd gear only goes to 66-67 mph due to the lower 6500rpm redline. 80 in 6th is 4000rpm.

      Thanks. Sadly, it comes down to 2 things, deceptive click-bait and constant sensationalized vlogs that are usually about nothing. Two things I'm unwilling to do. Unfortunately for me, lots of people fall for it and those guys profit from it, while guys like me that are trying to be helpful and informative get skipped because people would rather watch useless drama. Just the way CZcams (and the whole internet) is right now.

    I wish they would do an FA25 or atleast for 2020 redesign the EJ with a semi closed deck, stronger internals and a bump in hp. Itd be nice to be able to have a reliable 400-450whp stock block bolt on STI.

    Hey Matt
    I'm a huge fan of your channel and Subaru WRX STI car reviews but I have to ask you if you think the 2015 or newer Subaru WRX STI is better than the older 2002 to 2007 Subaru WRX STI s because I had a 04 RS and loved it but always wanted a turbo charged sti. Which generation would you choose??? I don't know which one is better to purchase

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 3 lety

      The older ones are more raw in many ways, but the new ones handle better along with having the nicer interiors. The newest STIs still drive fantastically well and still have the same engine as the older cars so you still get all the same engine character regardless of whether you go old or new. I hope that helps! Good luck deciding!
