B.C. man spends $1,200 on car, but has to pay tax on $4,000 value

- A man in Surrey has bought a fixer-upper for $1,200, but because of recent tax changes he’s facing a PST bill for the wholesale value of the car. Monika Gul reports while an appraisal could lower the tax, he hasn’t found a business that will do it.
We need to pay more taxes so politicians can have more vacations, paid meals, transport, sick days, etc.

Just think, if you overpay or you're car is better than average the tax isn't as bad as it could be.
@@Roof_Pizzaif a car that exceeds 10k value and the sale price exceeds the wholesale value then the they will appraise the vehicle themselves to check and see if the vehicle was worth even more than wholesale value. Most of the time this is done digitally by checking car reports to see if aftermarket parts/upgrades have been used. If the vehicle appraises for more than you paid then you have to pay more tax and pay for the appraisal which can be anywhere from 300 to 1000 depending if someone had to be sent to check in person.
Not sure what its like out in B.C., but in Ontario, the car is a holy cash grail for the Government. If a car changes hands just a few times, the taxation paid on that car, over the years, pretty much meets and maybe even exceeds the total value of the car's original purchase price.

on a federal and provincial level the laws on tax this is actually illegal not even the government has the right to charge tax above the amount Paid in the transaction made and does not have the authority to do so
The seller paid tax when he bought the car why should the resale buyer pay tax
Its the same way in newfoundland unless you get a signed affidavit saying how much you paid. I specifically bought from a dealer an "as traded" truck to avoid this headache and just pay it.

When the car was sold to the first owner they got the tax. Even the 5% GST if it’s a dealer is whatever. Don’t try justifying robbing people pst every transaction on a 25 year old car as “paying their fair share,”

Yea that happens to me in pei with my 2008 dodge magnum. I bought it in new Brunswick for 600 dollars at auction. Brought it back to pei and and had to pay the red book value tax and the red book value was 7000 dollars .
That’s so wrong. My husband used to buy cars at auction all the time. We only made money, but this was 40 years ago.
