  • Hey guys! Here are the city's second latest acquisitions for the 2021 contract renewals; Mack LR Leach 2R-IIIs!
For a long time, GreenWaste Recovery utilized Heil Big Bites or Leach 2R-IIIs mounted on Peterbilt 320s for their operations in San Jose. I got an "insider tip" around August of 2020 that GWR would go ahead, defy all expectations and not go with Peterbilt as they had since the late 1990s. I was a bit apprehensive at first due to the fact that across all GWR divisions in California, the main cab manufacturer that they have consistently stuck with since the late 1990s is Peterbilt. Fast forward an entire year, and sure enough, Labrie Automizers, Expert 2000s, Leach 2R-IIIs, and New Way King Cobras all mounted on Mack LRs began showing up at the GWR yard.
Reception of these new trucks is mixed. Some crews, such as my own, were able to put in a request to have replacement trucks and tractors as soon as they become available. Other crews held out (or are STILL holding out) on replacements, trying to keep their old CAT 914G tractors and Heil Big Bites. Many others I believe were forced into a replacement, as it seemed like the entire fleet of 2007 Peterbilt 320 Leach 2R-IIIs were the first to be replaced, even before the Heil Big Bites.
Overall though, I think these are pretty sick trucks, especially due to the lack of new Mack products in the Bay Area. My only gripe is that these trucks pack at idle by default, so manual revving is the only way to achieve quicker pack cycles. Not sure if that was intentional or not (most likely was because of stupid city rules). The Diamondback 450 Tippers are also a nice change from the Bayne & Perkins tippers found on the older RLs, however, they're also painfully slow at times. It's also now getting a bit more difficult to locate these trucks by sound, as from a block away they're nearly silent unless they're "belugaing".
Special thank you to all drivers featured for allowing me to film!
    Enjoy the video!

Very cool! Nice looking Mack. Sounds like a Pete 520. Beautiful head on shot of that Volvo at 3:41!

      GreenTeam bought Auto Reaches?
I ask because I moved to a townhouse complex in 2019, and it’s served by an Expert 2000.

No we bought one…our shop guy came from Republic in Fremont and that’s what they use and figured they try one…it’s a replacement for one of ZR’s that burned down last year….Labries they way to go though!
