" Looks can be deceiving "
This will be my last Rings of Power video. As obvious as this reveal was, I still think it was well executed. Rewatching the scenes is just another proof of how deceitful the relationship between Halbrand/Sauron and Galadriel was. Anything he did was never in the intent of redeeming himself but deceiving Galadriel in taking him where he needed to go in order to find power again. I tried to take songs that highlighted the contradictions in his portrayal, because this season was more about deceiving than being something truly dark.
Hope you'll like this video, thanks for watching !

    “Sauron lives because of you.”
This statement hits hard because Sauron means “the abhorred”. In other words, it means evil and darkness. Halbrand’s real name was Mairon. Sauron is just the title name he used to symbolize Mairon as now evil and not the admirable Maiar he once was.

Wasnt the name Sauron given to him by his foes? I am not sure, but I believe I read in The Two Towers that Sauron himself doesnt call himself that. Sarumans orcs had an S painted on their armors. Gimli or Legolas suggested that the S stands for Sauron. Aragorn (or Legolas) replied that he doesnt call himself that.

I really like what they've done with Sauron. Halbrand is so very likeable. It was always hard to imagine how the wise Elves could have been tricked for so long. Well, now we know. It was vital that the audience gets to experience that feeling for themselves: to feel that they've warmed to someone who is merely using them.
It's fascinating, too, to watch these clips and wonder just how much Halbrand/Sauron is telling the truth. About being penitent. At times he really seems to mean it. My theory is that, as an evil being, he simply does not understand goodness. He WANTS to be good, but it's a power beyond him. He thinks being good is just saying the right things and taking the right side. He's the psychopath who says sorry but never truly understands what it was he did wrong.
And that's his tragedy. He'll never know why he failed at being good.

The thing about Sauron was he was actually a being with good intentions right from the start. He understands good, just not wholly. His vision was to organize and bring order to all of Arda, in a grand scale. What he doesn't understand is how little things also is good. To him, anything smaller than grand unification was merely a tool. And his actions to him were a necessary evil for what he perceived to be a noble purpose. And so, as time passed, he fell further in further to evil because of what he did in his ambitions.

However...it was still a heart breaker. Galadriel was so blinded by revenge and pain that she never saw what was right in front of her. Plus, she was falling for him and his dark charm. 😪

"Wants to do good in his own twisted way" is literally Sauron's character - he values order above all else, no matter the cost. He initially used deception to enforce it, and when Eru stripped him of that ability, military might in the third age.
I think after Adar (allegedly) killed him, he lost hope and went to Valinor to seek forgiveness before changing his mind (hence why he was on the raft, I think Amazon are screwing with the timeline), and then Galadriel put him back on the path of tyranny.

Unfortunately, the Silmarillion casts him in a much more negative light. He is defeated, claims he repents and is compelled to return to Valar and go before Manwe and receive his repentance and judgment. He chooses to flee to the Far East instead. So I would say that as far as the show goes to try and paint him in a more sympathetic light, he remains what he always has been: Sauron the deceiver. The player of the long game.

Everyone can interpret Season1 how they want, but I did not see him deceiving Galadriel all along, he repeatedly and consistently tried to stay away from Middle Earth and her plans. When he did join her he went all in fighting her enemies and helping her, even later helping the Elves with their project. Since we aren't following the books by the letter, I think it's less than clear that he is actually gaining anything by working with the Elven smiths of Eregion at this point.

Many of the fans hating on the show have different reasons to do so: not keeping up with the lore, homogenous characters, ghastly costume design that look excruciatingly pretentious and even many of the scenes not vibing like middle earth.
For example: non of the harfoot scenes gave me middle earth impression. If you enjoyed the show then more power to you, but in a world where house of the dragons is a thing, I expect ROP to stand on par. Another thing that annoys me off about ROP is the fact that elves actually had long hair in their original concept arts (all their concept arts have elves with long hair) but for whatever reason in the end product they sought to cut cost and go for an elvis presley hair style which makes no sense given the proto medieval timeline. What a plottwist. The Dude who is interessted in Celebrimbors smithing art and is a master smith himself is Sauron?! The Dude who looks like Gandalf is Gandalf!? In season 2 we will find out that Galadriel is THE Galadriel from LOTR!

keep dreaming...theres no way galadriel from the series is galadriel from the books :D

  • @NightmareCourtPictures

"You bind me to light, and i bind you to power"
I feel like this is important line because the one rings idea was binding people in the darkness. I feel like Sauron was offering Galadriel a way to defeat Sauron by making him a good person "bind me to the light" and that in order to do that galadriel had to be okay with being his queen "Bind you to power"
Galadriel saw this as a perversion, where she thinks that if she's bound to power, he would corrupt her. But i think maybe this isn't truly what could have happened if she had said yes and forgiven him of his past sins.
It's worth noting that a 3rd option, is that this line is a lie and its all a deception...where Sauron is just super super evil beyond redemption.

I absolutely loved his arc in this show, and I thought the show was great as a whole. The only thing I wish they did different was waiting to reveal Sauron's identity.
I know it was becoming pretty obvious that Halbrand was Sauron, but everything coming to fruition kind of felt a bit rushed to me. I wish they took more time for Mordor to be created and for his actual plan to be enacted. Allowed him to be king for a little while and win over his people. Made room for him to develop an even deeper bond, "trust," and even kindred love with Galadriel.
I guess it depends on where the show takes his character, especially since they seem to be taking the stance that he actually was trying to repent and avoid Middle Earth but was thrown back into the darkness inadvertently by Galadriel. But right now, it feels like something they could have let sit a little longer.

I really love this world, the world created by Tolkien. Long before this series, I was thinking about the path of becoming Sauron. And I'm glad that this series gave me a chance to see this little line between good and evil, where Galadriel and Sauron inspire each other, bring each other back to life. So that everyone goes their own way.. The path of evil and good, the amazing line between these worlds.
Evil helps good, and good helps evil, they are united in their despair so much that love is practically born..

For her to change him- he did leave to tell everyone what he did- and he was honest in saying he's done many evils things and when everyone finds out them n her will cast her out. He was looking for peace to she brought him back to power- it's not her fault she didn't know. I just really wanted to see them together n a love scene between them.

  • @ahmetfgul

Why shouldn't we think like that?
Sauron is the only living being in the story from the first moment. He deserves respect.
He disappeared for a long time after the great evil was banished from Arda. Others said he was plotting evil and waiting for the right time. But perhaps he was seeking forgiveness and a way to return to goodness and light after so much wrong and sorrow. He wanted to rule the world, justified by the great power within him.
    Galadriel was an opportunity...

Tolkein's character arc of Sauron is profound enough so that this TV series accidently made him the best character of season 1, in an otherwise lousy show. Sauron convinced the producers to keep the show confused about who Halbrand might be for at least 1, maybe 2 episodes, cast him with some heartbreak appeal, quietly supernatural, and then allowed acting and stage presence to overshadow the other characters, and by the time the audience knew who he was, they were rooting for him anyway. As the writing goes, when God placed a barrier between the heavens and the earth, only navigable by the elves, he also took away Sauron's ability to assume a fair form. It will come as no surprise when they rest season 2 on the shoulders of Tolkein's title character.

For those who have never read Tolkien's works and have only seen the Prime Video series, they think it was all very good. From the point of view of aesthetics, photography and special effects: yes! It was wonderful. However, for me, the script choices were terrible. The change of Sauron's name when he helped forge the rings of power in Lindon, assisting Celebrimbor, from Annatar to Halbrand: why? No sense at all. Galadriel's story is nonsensical. Tolkien never said that Galadriel was in Númenor when she was in Middle-earth. Furthermore, he was a High Noldor, he would never have needed Gil-Galad's permission to return to the Undying Lands (in fact, not even Gil Galad had this power, which was the Valar's alone). The arrival of the Istari on a comet tearing through the sky? What the fuck! Although they couldn't use the story of The Silmarillion or The Lord of the Rings in the saga (due to copyright issues), they had to make the story AT LEAST make sense in relation to the first and third eras.
