Elf Armor Tutorial - Make your own elf armor from the Lord of the Rings!

- In this video I will show you how to create elven armor based on the Lord of the Rings movies in under 60 simple steps! :)
The armor is directly based and inspired by the 2nd age Elven Armor in the Prologue of the Lord of the Rings (the scene where the elves face off against Saurons hordes). It is larp-resistant and can take a big beating especially if you reinforce it with rivets instead of brads ;)
As always, if you have any questions just leave them in the comments. :)
Patterns and Reference images for the armor can be downloaded here: drive.google.com/open?id=1xA4...
The original images and patterns I found are all from the RPF Forum. :)

Thank you so much for this video! I've been wanting to make this armour for a long time. And now after watching (& rewatching!) this I feel very confident in doing so.
You are most welcome! I am so, so happy if I could help in any way! :-)
What an amazing amount of work, skill and beauty......Wow!!love it ,thankyou
That helmet is EVERYTHING!! Amazing craft.
Awesome tutorial, plus good camera work and editing. Really overall great job, more fantasy/ lotr themed video tutorials!
Thank you so much! :) I'm thrilled to hear all these wonderful things about this tutorial (made my day!) and definitely want to do more LOTR/Fantasy inspired tutorials in the future! :)
I never knew ovc and duct tape could be that good. Wonderful work 👍
Thank you so much, I am going to make mine out of leather and probably make some kind of buckle closure. I was having trouble figuring out how to work the PDF but this helped so much with it!
Thank you so so so much for the tutorial! I've watched it several times and I'll soon try to make it. Wish me luck!
You are so very very welcome :) I am really happy if I could help you in any way and wish you all the luck in the world with it!

I made a erebor dwarf armour... But this one looks really good
Ah very cool you made your own dwarf armor and thank you! It's appreciated!!!
Amaziiiing
I loved the intro, the tutorial and the armour! It helped me a lot with my project, thanks!
@@cryo1186 I am so glad I could help and am honoured by your words! You're welcome!
Thank you so much! I watched both your's and Phil-Galads FB pages and both of you are just awesome. I want to build my own armor for my totally non cannon Noldor princess. You do so much cosplay, did you do this armor with worbla also? The Noldorin armor you have at etsy, is it PVC or something different?
You are way too kind. :) I really appreciate the nice words and yep, Phil is a great guy to whom I owe a lot for this tutorial! I did do a Noldor armor with some Eva foam and a cheap plastic half-mannequin bust. If you scroll through my albums and photos on my FB page you will see some photos on how I did that (although it is just one size and only covers the front part of your torso so only good for photoshoots where the cloak can cover the back). :)
Thank you sooo much!
You are most welcome! :) :) I am happy I could help!
Hi! Impressive tutorial, thank you so much! I have just one question: do you know the weight of this chest armor?
You are most welcome! :) I am glad you like the tutorial. Unfortunately, I do not know the weight but it's not so heavy. I am guessing maybe a kg or two at most?
Hello ! I am a bit late but I have a little question to ask :) First, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ! I would like to try to make it, and I just wanted to know what clothes or pieces of fabric you wear under the armor. I want to make a full elf costume and I don't know what to use under... Hope you'll answer to my quetsion :)
Sorry I am late with replying! :D Thanks so much for appreciating and liking the video! :) I wear a pair of leggings, an elven long sleeved under shirt and then a sleeveless long tunica dress that is bound in the middle. On top of that I wear a cloak :) Hope that helps!
Great set, how did you make the helmet? I like the use of colours you chose for the robes too.
Hey thanks a bunch! :) I bought the helmet online actually and didn't make it. Glad you like the colors as well - I based them on Autumn woodland colors :)
Beyond good 😯😯😯🔮
Thanks so much! :D
Looks so great. That weave looks so confusing but you did it. It is awesome, all of it, except that crown/circlet is not good.
Thanks so much but lol I must admit I am somewhat confused by the feedback! :D So everything is awesome but then you don't like the crown? That's too bad cause I really do :D
hello there! I know i am many years late but wanted to drop a note of thanks for this AMAZING tutorial!! Can you say, how comfortable is this armor to wear? In the beginning video you aren't wearing the full set. What kind of leather did you use? do you have any recommendations for where to buy the flooring or the leather? Thank you very much for inspiring me to try making this myself!!! You are an excellent elf and an amazing craftsman!
Hey there Hasume! I really appreciate the kind words and am so happy you like my tutorial - it honors me. :) The armor is quite light to wear and it's not uncomfortable. I wore it to a LARP battle and it withstood quite a few hits. As for the leather... phew... it was a scrap piece I once bought at a local market that I had used for my Rey Cosplay belt... As for the flooring, I bought it at my local hardware store (the Obi in Germany). :) I don't know where you are based, otherwise I could maybe recommend a place. And once again you are welcome from the heart. I am always glad to help someone in need, and am even gladder if I can inspire them! You can do this! :) I was a total noob when I started and thanks to the amazing guidance and help by @philgalad I managed! ! Also am super happy you like my elven portrayal! :)

@@wonderbuilds6523 Awww thanks so much! :D Shall not delete it or Sauron would win ;)
@@AriRubin :)
I’m building this currently. Wish you guys showed how you did the hip armor.
Gotta say the 2nd age elven armor is pretty sweet
Thanks man! It's appreciated :D
Amazing tutorial can you suggest a thickness of foam for this armor in mm please
Hey thanks so much! Ufff that's hard to say because I didn't use any foam for this but I would go somewhere between 3-5mm I guess :D But don't take my word for it, just a guess!
you make a good Noldor Guard of Rivendell
I've been trying to create the armor and the tunic and shirt but the fabric I've been looking for I can't get the right color I've trying to do the silver and gold armor with the blue underneath
Very well done! Where I can buy the materials?
I bought mine at the local hardware store in Germany called OBI :) but any hardware store anywhere should have it
If she would do Saurons armor, this channel would become famous xD No1 has ever done Saurons Armor even tho most people want one
Hahaha :D I'd be up for it but unfortunately I don't have Saurons height or stature so I'd look ridiculous in his armor :D
@@AriRubin asuch as I love ever, of your answers, this is my most belovedesses answer n my precioussss. I ROFLed until I turned I to a giant flaming eye...
Hey, great work with the armor and tutorial, I am building it myself for an
larp elf out of 5mm Leather and it is pretty durable, but what do you suggest to wear under it ?
Addistionally i did build the whole thing out of fabric als it does look very good as well, when worn over my mage robe, thanks for this great work it really inspired me
Sorry I am late with replying! :D Thanks so much for appreciating and liking the video! :) I wear a pair of leggings, an elven long sleeved under shirt and then a sleeveless long tunica dress that is bound in the middle. On top of that I wear a cloak :) You could also make a chainmail armor to wear under it (I would do that if I had more time!) Hope that helps!
@@AriRubin elven undershirt?
@@Thrawn215 I made the undershirt myself :)
First, awesome work, and thank you so much for this tutorial! The resizing as to be done by trial and error... please, can you tell us how much did you resize it for your size, please? (Same apply to everyone which has done it, and i'm gonna write it down myself once i'm done with this armor^^)
Thanks so much! I am really happy you like it and glad I can help. I am really sorry but I made this costume two years ago so unfortunately I don't remember the percentage of resizing but I remember having to print a LOT of papers with different sizes before I could get it right. I know no other method than trial and error :( Sorry I can't help more!
@@AriRubin Good thing i still have a printer and not much else to do! Thanks!
@@SalmonSongShow I had the same question. I played around with the settings and kept replaying it. Turns out its %400 in the video.
Turns out around 415% seems like a good resizing for me. 1m80, 85kg, heavy built
Hi, what matinal is used for the tunic/dress portion of the cosplay at the beginning?
Hmm I think it's something like taffeta/ some synthetic crash taft if I recall
Hello, how durable would the foam be for film use? I know you said you could use leather for full-contact larping but would a thicker mm foam help too? (4mm, 5mm?)
Thanks!
I'm not sure because I haven't tried so much foam in LARP but I think it would break over the long run cause the glue components might not hold up and if it was attached with rivets it might tear ..
Do u plan to make a n elven helmet tutorial ?
No, unfortunately not because I bought the helmet you see in the video (off of Ebay) :)
Hello! I know this was posted a while ago, but I was curious if you had a recommendation on what percentage to start at when scaling the PDFs. I know it's different for everyone but is there a general percentage you found to be good to start at? Thanks for the tutorial!
You're welcome :) Sorry, I don't have a recommendation because for me it was a lot of trial and error and printing on the back of used paper to see what works :D Get ready to print for your life! :P
Around 400% Currently testing some pattern to see which fit me better, can update you about it
@@SalmonSongShow Funny. I actually just printed mine of at 410 and 415%. I'm thinking we are in the right ball park.
Mine is finally around 415, mostly for a better protection for the shoulders.
Great video,
One problem I see, is the helmet creast. In combat it will snap your neck.
Firstly: thank you :) And yeah I've used it in full-contact hardcore LARP combat and it ain't pretty ;) I would recommend using this only for show purposes for everyone's safety. :)
Hey, could you do a followup on the sword and shield?
Hey there! Sorry but I didn't make the sword and shield - I bought them. They are LARP weapons :)
@@AriRubin where did you get them from?
This is realy amazing but where is the part for the rest of the armor?
For now it is just the chest part. What about the other parts?
Thank you so much! I only filmed the chest armor part unfortunately because my cam SD ran out of space. The helmet and the shield I bought and the rest was pieced together and made by me way before I had the CZcams Channel.
approximately how much Vinyl Flooring did you use?
I bought about 2-3 m :)
What is the rest of the costume made of? Like the under clothing and the cloth around your waist?
Also where did you get the weapon and sheild?
@@cris.withno.h The shield and the sword are elven larp shield and swords. I bought the sword from a larp shop at a cosplay and larp convention called the RPC in Germany and I bought the shield online. I just googled elf larp shield. :)
The fabrics are just crinkled taffetta fabrics I bought cheap online and at a bookstore going out of business using the fabric for window decorations ;)
How much time did it take to make it? I only have a couple weeks before halloween.
Sorry for the late reply, I guess I am too late for Halloween ;) It depends on how much time you invest in it. I did it on my vacation for a few hours every day for about a week and a half to two weeks I think!
@@AriRubin yeah lol, it turned out that i didnt do anything for Halloween so its all good, but ill see if i can get the money for materials this year depending on how the next few months go.
How manny hours did it take to make the armour?
It must have taken me a good 40 hrs or so :)
Loves💖💖💖💖
Thanks so much! :)
Perfect, where did you buy the helm?
Thank you! :) I bought it off Ebay! Just search for Rivendell LARP Elf Helmet :D
@@AriRubin Do you have any content from the making of the lower part of the armor?
@@IceCreamMaker No sorry I don't. But you use the same template and the same materials as with the upper part and the process is more or less the same.
@@AriRubin Oh that's a pity, but thanks anyways ❤ !!!
@@IceCreamMaker You're welcome :)
how much did it cost to make this whole armor set?
It cost me about 40 euro or so :)
🤓
Can i like pay you for that lol i would so buy it rn
Haha! I would totally do it if only I knew how to make things to other people's body measurements. But so far my skills only extend to making things for my measurements unfortunately lol
hi, nice. you may sack your star punch with a piece of leather for ease if you like. k
Hi glad you like it and thanks for the tip! I unfortunately don't understand what you were referring to though. Can you clarify?
Ari Rubin hi, sorry... BACK. k
