You gotta watch the whole movie for context. This is probably the best satire of all time. Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder are awesome in it. It’s a classic. And hilarious. We used to quote lines from it all the time when I was in jr high lol.

I think it’s the absurdity of scenes like this that highlight the satire. Absurd humor has its own logic, and the part of this scene where Sheriff Bart takes himself prisoner makes sense if you understand the logic. First, you have to understand that your garden variety racist doesn’t think he’s racist (and I know some of you have experienced this first hand). A racist person thinks they are good, and outside of the context of racism, they have normal moral reactions. Bart changes gears on them when he takes himself hostage, and they have the normal reaction to a bad guy (Bart talking in his rough evil voice) threatening to kill an innocent victim (Bart talking in his exaggerated “darky” voice, with eyes popping out).
The point being that many dumb racist ypipo have some goodness in them, and they can get past their racism if they can get in touch with that better nature. But it’s a slow process, as we see in the Up yours/pie scene.
Anyway, that’s the lesson I take from this scene. The ypipo of the town are dumb, but they also have a morally good side that can be appealed to. (There’s also the “No Irish” scene later on that highlights this.)
As you point out, it’s the satire that makes this movie so great. If it was just a parody, it would lack that moral bite that stings us as we laugh. For pure parody without the satire, Young Frankenstein might be the best, but Blazing Saddles wins Best Satire by a mile.

  • @IggyStardust1967
    @IggyStardust1967 Před 2 lety +53

Back during that era, racism, bigotry, and stereotypes were best dealt with by showing just how stupid they are via comedy/satire. That's what Blazing Saddles did very well. Several TV shows also accomplished this in their own way. We were still going through the "Civil Rights" fight that started back in the 1960s, and to a point, still goes on to this day. We just deal with it differently these days, as too many people get feelings hurt when you try to satirize it these days. They take the satirization to heart, and that's what they should NOT do. It's not to mock them, but to mock the moron who actually hold those kinds of beliefs.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe we are all equal, and should all be treated fairly. And yes, we shouldn't try to hurt the feelings of someone else. However, with that said, there are people who just don't realize that the easiest way to remove the power that bigots/etc can have over you, is to mock the Hell out of them for their viewpoints. If someone calls me a "honkey", I laugh at them, and then "honk" like a goose at them. They call me a "cracker", I laugh at them and say, "excuse me, but it's Saltine American". Take what they say, and turn it on its head through comedy/humour. Aside from actual violence, it can't hurt you if you don't allow it to.
Edit: Richard Pryor co-wrote this with Mel Brooks. If you don't know who Richard Pryor is, you really need to Google him. One of the top 5 comedians in history!

The bit with pointing the gun at himself is a rip on the hypocrisy of the townspeople. They weren't willing to acknowledge their own desire to kill him. But they were against killing black people in general.

Oh, Doc. Mel Brooks was a comedy genius. This was one of his best, but seriously, all of his movies up until Robin Hood: Men in Tights are gold.
    Blazing Saddles
History of the World Part I
    The Producers
    Spaceballs
    Silent Movie
    Young Frankenstein
Remember the TV show "Get Smart"? That's his too.

Mel Brooks had a rule: never punch down. Everyone who uses the n-word is a bad guy or an idiot. You can tell Gene Wilder's character is good because he instantly goes to the word "black" when it comes up. And as people warm up to Bart they stop using the n-word, though Olsen "Santa Claus" Johnson does say it about railroad workers towards the end...

Mel of Brooks said: "Find me someone like "Frankie Laine." Frankie Laine shows up and signs to sing the "Blazing Saddles" theme like it's for a Randolph Scott movie. Mel the Brooks said: "Blazing Saddles" will take down The Western movie genre AND Racism in one outrageous movie! This movie has to be seen from the Frankie Laine performance to "Bart and The Kid" riding off into the Sunset." Yes, it is a ROTFLMAO movie for the ages.;) And it all started with this movie in 1969: czcams.com/video/HPXHRX8Q2hs/video.html

One of the funnier scenes to me is later in the movie when the railroad workers offer to help the townsfolk and one of the town leaders say's, "Alright, we'll take the ni****s and the ch**ks, but we don't want the Irish! The man himself looks Irish to me, as he's saying it, LOL! I'm of Irish descent myself and I crack up every time I hear him say that.

If you watch this entire movie, believe me, your belly is going to hurt for days! Thank you for researching this movie first so that you were able to see that it is not a racist movie at all. It was written and produced and acted in this movie, which was a brilliant mockery of racism and prejudice and ignorance. Mel Brooks is brilliant and bold and has written many screen plays.which shocked a lot of people but prove to be intelligent and funny. Mel brooks wrote and acted in "Young Frankenstein". He also wrote and acted in a very successful Broadway play which mocked Hitler and the Nazi's. It was called "Springtime for Hitler" and featured Waffen SS uniformed officers doing a chorus line dance to a musical score entitled "Springtime for Hitler?". Mel Brooks is Jewish, and he mocks Antisemitism as well, and also racism against Chinese people, Islamic fundamentalists, Hells Angels, the KKK, Native Americans, Germans, French, Italians, and every kind of deviant behavior including bestiality and of course, human beings who are ignorant and don't realize it. I have seen this movie about twenty times. It truly is brilliant and definitely does not favor racism of any kind. Thank you for one of the most well-done reactions I have seen. Best Wishes from a grandmother in the Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York State.

Gabby Johnson is the mush mouth guy. who can argue with authentic frontier gibberish lol. Like the popular consensus, do yourself a favor and watch the entire movie. Richard Pryor has big writing credit and this scene was very indicative lol.
