You gotta watch the whole movie for context. This is probably the best satire of all time. Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder are awesome in it. It’s a classic. And hilarious. We used to quote lines from it all the time when I was in jr high lol.
Gene Wilder is probanbly my favorite movie comedian ever.
Lol... I got suspended a week from work for reciting jokes from this movie.
No lie.
I think it’s the absurdity of scenes like this that highlight the satire. Absurd humor has its own logic, and the part of this scene where Sheriff Bart takes himself prisoner makes sense if you understand the logic. First, you have to understand that your garden variety racist doesn’t think he’s racist (and I know some of you have experienced this first hand). A racist person thinks they are good, and outside of the context of racism, they have normal moral reactions. Bart changes gears on them when he takes himself hostage, and they have the normal reaction to a bad guy (Bart talking in his rough evil voice) threatening to kill an innocent victim (Bart talking in his exaggerated “darky” voice, with eyes popping out).
The point being that many dumb racist ypipo have some goodness in them, and they can get past their racism if they can get in touch with that better nature. But it’s a slow process, as we see in the Up yours/pie scene.
Anyway, that’s the lesson I take from this scene. The ypipo of the town are dumb, but they also have a morally good side that can be appealed to. (There’s also the “No Irish” scene later on that highlights this.)
As you point out, it’s the satire that makes this movie so great. If it was just a parody, it would lack that moral bite that stings us as we laugh. For pure parody without the satire, Young Frankenstein might be the best, but Blazing Saddles wins Best Satire by a mile.
@@MarcosElMalo2 they had richard pryor has the sheriff part but he couldn't do it which i think turned out a good thing...think cleavon little was brilliant...........if you have ever watched 3rd rock from the sun....the women with glasses to the left in the sheriff coming to town scene is bugs mother.....if you have never watched 3rd rock it will mean nothing
absolutely!
You need to see the whole movie.. pure tongue in cheek comedy.. Mel brooks was a master of the art... love the reaction!! As always.. keep up the good content
Brooks is still alive.
'As chairman of the welcoming committee it's my priviledge to extend a LAUREL AND HARDY handshake to our new...'
That joke alone makes me chuckle already. 😂
The younger reactors do not get this joke
@@peterriley5466 Agreed, it doesn't even cross their mind. I yet to see one of them react to the joke, and I've seen a lot of them reacting to this movie.
"What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin' on here?"
This movie is completely off the rails. This isn't the only time that the movie went full Bugs Bunny. You'll enjoy the whole movie.
Candygram!
Mel Brooks didn't care...nobody was safe!! And nobody got offended. 🤣
Everyone laughed and then later it dawned on them to be offended....by then it was too late.
Oh he did care, he even said that they couldn't have made the movie back then either. That's why the original studio it was pitched to rejected it.
@@Shay_Mendez Well, it was released...so he didn't care. He went ahead and made people laugh....the actors Included. He himself didn't protect anybody's feelings...including his own Jewish community...Mel was a beast....
@@drlong08 Opposite is true. For many they didn't laugh at first, and then realized it was satire. They understood intent. They realized who is being mocked. Laughing then is appropriate. If you laugh before, you are exposed.
This movie was ranked #6 in the top 100 American Film Institute comedies of all time!
You can't do scenes from the movie, you need to watch the entire movie. It's too good to spoil with excerpts.
Blazing Saddles is hilarious. Not for the soft.
Back during that era, racism, bigotry, and stereotypes were best dealt with by showing just how stupid they are via comedy/satire. That's what Blazing Saddles did very well. Several TV shows also accomplished this in their own way. We were still going through the "Civil Rights" fight that started back in the 1960s, and to a point, still goes on to this day. We just deal with it differently these days, as too many people get feelings hurt when you try to satirize it these days. They take the satirization to heart, and that's what they should NOT do. It's not to mock them, but to mock the moron who actually hold those kinds of beliefs.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe we are all equal, and should all be treated fairly. And yes, we shouldn't try to hurt the feelings of someone else. However, with that said, there are people who just don't realize that the easiest way to remove the power that bigots/etc can have over you, is to mock the Hell out of them for their viewpoints. If someone calls me a "honkey", I laugh at them, and then "honk" like a goose at them. They call me a "cracker", I laugh at them and say, "excuse me, but it's Saltine American". Take what they say, and turn it on its head through comedy/humour. Aside from actual violence, it can't hurt you if you don't allow it to.
Edit: Richard Pryor co-wrote this with Mel Brooks. If you don't know who Richard Pryor is, you really need to Google him. One of the top 5 comedians in history!
In the comedy world for the stand-up sets Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby were the complete opposite
richard pryor who had a part in the writing was going to be the sheriff...something happened to him to prevent it but i think cleavon little was brilliant and i can't imagine Pryor would have topped his performance...
They just wanted to make fun of white people. I'm white, and found it hilarious.
@@nickma71 No. They did not just want to make fun of white people.
Mel Brooks is white, even though he's jewish, his pigment is still white. They mocked the very idea of racism and those who practice it.
@@nickma71not all white people. Just the racist ones. Gene Wilder's character isn't portrayed as a stupid one.
One of the funniest films of all time, IMO. I love the scene where the sheriff is riding through the desert to "April in Paris". As the camera pans, Count Basie and his big band are seen sitting in the desert playing the tune, one of my favorite Basie numbers.
watched it loads of times...still laugh
It's sad that people don't get the "Laurel and Hardy (Hearty) Handshake" joke. It's a play on words
And the guy is wearing a bowler hat like Stan and Ollie wore.
Yes, just like the Headly Lamar jokes....you can sue her!
What 8s the joke
Mel Brooks savaged every group and no one was safe. It is one of the funniest movies ever made. You have to see it. One thing for sure it could never be made again
Glenn Vallejo, agreed, but why would you want to remake something that was perfect to begin with?
Very true
As others have said, you should watch the whole movie. Mel Brooks is a comedic genius and this movie is hilarious and ridiculous from start to finish
I came here to say this, but I knew in my heart that it had already been said.
You need to watch this whole movie. If you're laughing like this at just this scene, then your sides will hurt at the end of the whole thing from laughing so much.
Richard Pryor was originally wanted to play the sheriff, he and Gene Wilder are amazing in movies together, but Cleavon Little did an amazing job
Pryor had other commitments at the time of shooting, but he did write a lot of this movie. And Yes in this case Cleavon was a better choice in my opinion
@@txaggievet Plus it was during some of Pryor's drug issues and I guess the studio didn't want to sign off on it at the time. Pryor and Wilder were hilarious together in Stir Crazy!
@@sikksotoo Love Stir Crazy, and Silver Streak
You should watch the whole movie. It's one of the funniest movies ever made. It's both a spoof of westerns, but also a satire on the stupidity of racism. Beyond that, it's just a damned funny film.
Oh this movie is priceless. I was crying for laughing so much. You need to see the whole movie. So much satire. Mel Brooks was always doing satire. No one got offended back then and it was great. We need to laugh.
Bro you HAVE to watch the whole movie. You don’t gotta react, just watch it in your own time, it’s so worth it. Such a good satire, poking fun at how stupid and ridiculous racism actually is. It’s comedy gold.
Gabby speaks “authentic frontier gibberish” . And the laurel and hearty handshake is a play on the famous comic duo “Laurel and Hardy”.
3:13 this is funny and the way they looked at dude as he walked by oh my god 💀
Mel Brooks is a comedic genius! You really gotta watch the whole movie
watch the documentary about it.......if you loved the film you will find it interesting
In this movie, the chemistry between Clevedon Little and Gene Wilder is just magic. Do yourself a favour and watch the whole movie.
You have to watch the whole movie and then remember Richard Pryor helped write scenes like this.
Watched this film hundreds of times and only just clocked the Laurel and Hardy gag
4:36 "No, gone blame it dang blammit! The sheriff is a..."
One of the greatest comedies ever. Mel Brooks is the GOAT
Anything by Mel Brooks is a top tier comedy
"I wonder what other wild sh*t they say?" After his cover is blown while trying to be stealthy he asks, "Where are all the white women?"
Hopefully you'll watch the full movie. It's a Mel Brooks classic, helped written by Richard Pryor.
Another favorite quote besides "work work work", was another movie "wait for the shake, wait for the shake" , followed by a tip
Hope you get to see the whole movie. Well worth the time. Also, when they mis-heard Gabby Johnson he said, NO God Blame it dang blammitt, The Sherrif is a NI(Bong!). :)
The guy looking out is the town drunk. That’s why he talks like that
The dude on the roof is Gabby, the town drunk. You really need to watch the whole film, because the whole thing is hysterical.
Doc chose not to suspend disbelief in a comedy 😁...
You need to see the movie
Now I need to find it and watch it again!
Richard Pryor was one of writers of this Movie so you know there's a lot of Wild Things Said, in Fact Mel Brooks wanted Richard to Play the part of Sheriff Bard but the Studio went with someone else.
saw the documentary think they thought he was unreliable because of his drinking but i could be wrong.......however cleavon little was brilliant
I played the trumpet too! Til I realized you couldn't be on the football team AND in the band in high school 😅 Yeah this is a classic, very funny for the satire it is, holds up even 50 years later now
Next, you have to watch the Jive scene from Airplane. xD
Without any context, among the things you won't get is that the guy on the roof is the towns designated geezer Gabby Johnson. And, after the fashion of most western sidekicks, he tends to speak in stereotypical frontier gibberish.
You really need to watch the whole film, it's a classic
He said and I quote… “ No God Dang Dag Gum Flabbit” ( The Sheriff is a )
Mel Brooks was asked if he could make this movie today...he said "hell, we couldn't make it back then!" Best movie ever!
I don't understand why people watch just this clip. One has to watch the whole movie to get the context.
Someone told Mel Brooks he couldn't make this movie these days. He replied, "I couldn't make it then."
In today's PC world a lot of what was said and done in this film would trigger so many people.
Blazing Saddles was the shit! It was hilarious!!!
" LePetomane " was a nineteenth-century French stage entertainer who used ' flatulence ' to play music' , and was known as a World Champion farter - he could fart any tune, from ' Hymn to the Moon ' , to Beethoven's ' Moonlight Sonata '.
You need to see the whole film it's hilarious
It’s in the genre of young Frankenstein it’s not meant to be taken as a serious movie. It’s one of those movies where you take your brain out for a couple of hours and just enjoy being entertained. It was back in a time when language was more unfiltered.
“A man that drinks like that, and does not eat, is going to die”. “When?”
Gabby's speech is a running joke in the movie: He is speaking "Authentic Frontier Gibberish"
The whole movie... You have to see it all
"A laurel and hardy handshake..." Laurel & Hardy were a comedy duo in films 1930-1950. Unfortunately, no one under 45 knows who they are anymore. Check out them moving a piano.
You will be curled up on the floor laughing hysterically when you watch the whole film.
Gabby (the guy with the telescope) was speaking in authentic frontier gibberish.
Interviewer to Mel Brooks: "Could you make this movie today?"
Brooks' Response: "You couldn't make it in 1974!!"
You need to watch the entire movie to get some of the nuances in this scene. For example, why is he becoming the sheriff of this town to begin with?
The "laurel and hardy handshake" line was a reference to Laurel and Hardy who were famous comedians in the early 20th century.
If you're a child of the 80's it's exra shocking to see Higgins drop an n-bomb
I think the old man was trying to say no god damn It dang nabit 😂
This movie took the piss out of pretty much everyone 🤣😂
If you are still not convinced to see the whole movie, there is another scene cut. The quicksand cut will truly convince you to invest the hour and a half for the whole movie.
How are you alive and you never saw Blazing Saddles???🤣
And if you want context on the humor in this movie keep in mind Richard Pryor helped write the script
Mel Brooks is Jewish and he made fun of the Nazis . He's doing this on purpose to show bigotry is offensive. Your reaction made me laugh more than the movie.
Watch that movie!! HILARIOUS!! 🤣🤣🤣
06:58 - Girlie screamed like she was being brutally ATTACKED. Over some d*ck, lol. I've been watching this since the 1970's. That death scream of hers never gets old.
Gabby is the town drunk so he slurs his words. You got to watch the entire movie. It is hilarious.
I have seen this hundreds of times, but I laughed aloud watching your reaction! Toooo damn funny!
Best line in the movie, " hey, where all the white girls at?" 😂😂
My favorite comedy of all time! You’ve gotta watch it!
Movie released in 1974 but it was set in 1874. You should see the whole thing for context.
You really NEED to watch the entire movie. Then you will start to understand what it is doing.
You had my dying laughing with you at the beginning, but trust all the folks in here telling you to watch the whole movie. You will be hurting from laughing nearly the entire thing, so please don't ruin it with just scenes. I'll tell you I saw parts of it and hated it growing up, but I never saw it in its entirety. Finally got around to watching it last year and boy did I have it wrong. This is one of the BEST comical movies of all time! You'll love it!
You have to remember that this movie was made in 1974. At that time, the N word (with the hard R) was still used in certain parts of this country in regular conversation. People tend to forget that.
If I were to show only one film to display the absurdity, stupidity, and pointlessness of racism...I would show 'Blazing Saddles'.
Not only does this movie go full tilt off the rails, it has a lot of heart. It was co-written by the legendary Richard Pryor (who was originally gonna play the sheriff...but due to his drug use couldn't get insured for the film). Without a doubt, I think that you would LOVE this movie!!! Mel Brooks is a comedy master...'The Producers' (the original and the musical version), 'Young Frankenstein', 'Robin Hood:Men In Tights', 'High Anxiety', 'History of the World, Part I', 'Spaceballs', 'Silent Movie', and 'Blazzing Saddles'. These are some of his best!
Mel Brooks (white guy) wrote the lines for the blacks in the movie , and Richard Pryor (black guy) wrote the lines for the white folks ... just ONE reason this movie is hilarious !!!!
you have to see the whole movie. super hysterical
You have to watch the whole movie, Man!this scene doesn't make all that much sense without understanding what's going on. PLUS, it's just one of the funniest movies ever made
I believe what he said was "No God Flamin Dang Blammit"
Written by wilder and Richard Pryor, Pryor was supposed to do Littles part but couldn't because of other commitments
The bit with pointing the gun at himself is a rip on the hypocrisy of the townspeople. They weren't willing to acknowledge their own desire to kill him. But they were against killing black people in general.
One of my favorite Mel Brooks movie next to History Of The World Pt 1... Salute
I agree with all those who tell you that you need to watch the whole thing.
As a young child, my grandfather nicknamed me Mongo after a character in this movie. If you wanna check out another scene without watching the whole movie first, try out the opening scene where they’re working on the railroad
10:03 He was using reverse psychology. ;)
If you want a sure cure for depression, this movie is it!!!!😂😂
YOU GOTTA WATCH THE **WHOLE** MOVIE! Mel Brooks is awesome!
Oh, Doc. Mel Brooks was a comedy genius. This was one of his best, but seriously, all of his movies up until Robin Hood: Men in Tights are gold.
Blazing Saddles
History of the World Part I
The Producers
Spaceballs
Silent Movie
Young Frankenstein
Remember the TV show "Get Smart"? That's his too.
What do you mean was? Mel Brooks is still alive and still writing.
@@Fmanzo10 yes, sorry, I didn't look it up till hours later and then forgot to change it. SORRY, MEL! So many celebs have died in the past few years, I forget who is left.
I watched this in a movie theater with my parents when it came out - I was 6 years old. lol
Just watch the whole movie. With your sense of humor you will love it. Nothing is sacred. Race, LGBTQ+,, women, Everyone gets roasted to prove how stupid it all is.
Mel Brooks had a rule: never punch down. Everyone who uses the n-word is a bad guy or an idiot. You can tell Gene Wilder's character is good because he instantly goes to the word "black" when it comes up. And as people warm up to Bart they stop using the n-word, though Olsen "Santa Claus" Johnson does say it about railroad workers towards the end...
Wonder how Doc will react to the extended Lilly Von Strupt and Bart scene.
Mel of Brooks said: "Find me someone like "Frankie Laine." Frankie Laine shows up and signs to sing the "Blazing Saddles" theme like it's for a Randolph Scott movie. Mel the Brooks said: "Blazing Saddles" will take down The Western movie genre AND Racism in one outrageous movie! This movie has to be seen from the Frankie Laine performance to "Bart and The Kid" riding off into the Sunset." Yes, it is a ROTFLMAO movie for the ages.;) And it all started with this movie in 1969: czcams.com/video/HPXHRX8Q2hs/video.html
it was co-written by Richard Prior, you should have known this would be fire!!
Blazing Saddles is a comedy and a parody about the wild west, so look at this scene with that perspective.
Ok, who in the world wouldn’t like Blazing Saddles? ❄️❄️❄️❄️😂
Its a killer movie bruh, you should watch it, it makes fun of just about every race and ethnicity you can think of, but never in a really mean way, and the overall point of the movie is really a good one, to this day It makes me laugh hard asf, for real, check out the whole movie, you wont be sorry.
One of the funnier scenes to me is later in the movie when the railroad workers offer to help the townsfolk and one of the town leaders say's, "Alright, we'll take the ni****s and the ch**ks, but we don't want the Irish! The man himself looks Irish to me, as he's saying it, LOL! I'm of Irish descent myself and I crack up every time I hear him say that.
And it’s also accurate. In the 19th century, the Irish were victims of discrimination.
This movie actually makes fun of racism. Richard Pryor had a hand in writing the script.
Gull dangit, dag blummit. character was fashioned after Gabby Hayes, character actor from the 50's and 60's
If you watch this entire movie, believe me, your belly is going to hurt for days! Thank you for researching this movie first so that you were able to see that it is not a racist movie at all. It was written and produced and acted in this movie, which was a brilliant mockery of racism and prejudice and ignorance. Mel Brooks is brilliant and bold and has written many screen plays.which shocked a lot of people but prove to be intelligent and funny. Mel brooks wrote and acted in "Young Frankenstein". He also wrote and acted in a very successful Broadway play which mocked Hitler and the Nazi's. It was called "Springtime for Hitler" and featured Waffen SS uniformed officers doing a chorus line dance to a musical score entitled "Springtime for Hitler?". Mel Brooks is Jewish, and he mocks Antisemitism as well, and also racism against Chinese people, Islamic fundamentalists, Hells Angels, the KKK, Native Americans, Germans, French, Italians, and every kind of deviant behavior including bestiality and of course, human beings who are ignorant and don't realize it. I have seen this movie about twenty times. It truly is brilliant and definitely does not favor racism of any kind. Thank you for one of the most well-done reactions I have seen. Best Wishes from a grandmother in the Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York State.
Gabby Johnson is the mush mouth guy. who can argue with authentic frontier gibberish lol. Like the popular consensus, do yourself a favor and watch the entire movie. Richard Pryor has big writing credit and this scene was very indicative lol.
