    The wild sika deer in Japan's Nara Park have been under government protection since 1957. What do you think about the relationship between humans and these deer?

      according to Wikipedia, due to the increased population the deer are culled.

    Seems like a beautiful place to visit. Would be great to be able to feed and pet the deer (if they don't try to bite me that is). Thanks National Geographic for sharing.

      I visited last year. The deer are very friendly and actually bow to you for food. Expect to spend up to a full afternoon at nara park. Just a 30 to 40min train ride from osaka

      They're friendly but not domestic. I've seen one rip a guidebook off of a tourist's hand and actually EAT it page by page like nothing.
      Goes to show they're here for the food, and not much else.

    What I like about animals is that what we describe as pain that they cause to our bodies, to them it's not. Something I learnt by watching some videos of Richard and his lions here in South Africa. Example, they play rough, but to a lion that is not rough, it is quite enjoyable. Great video by the way.

    These deers have been coexisting with Japanese people for over 2000 years. It’s not only from 1950s that’s only legally protected but these are sacred deers. There are Japanese folktales about these deers. Though they eat these deer cookies sold to tourists for snacks and treats, they mainly live in a few mountains in forest and they eat plants in there as a main diet though they own the town. They’re freely sleeping nearby planters on a street and they quite often come into many shops (they don’t destroy merchandise or anything). They only bite of you hesitate to give cookies though they can see you holding them. I mean these aren’t pets but wild but sacred deers. I’ve been to this place so many times I live in Japan, we go there as an elementary school trip in grade 5 or 6 before graduating from elementary school.

    U know what’s even more amazing? Even though they had to build that temple with tons of wood meaning that they would have to cut down tons of trees. There is still a forest around the place.

    • @KittenBowl1
      @KittenBowl1 Před rokem

      Lol these temples have been standing for thousands of years. And due to unique traditional Japanese building techniques they do last ages, with proper repairs. Westerners are strange in that way, they don’t even dare to say about their recently built churches with tons of wood used to wastefully with nails that break down overtime and never last as long as these Japanese temples as these don’t use any nails. Yet you dare to point out these Japanese temples and shrines older than some countries in Europe.

    Crazy how the deer act so differently around people in Japan than in the Inland NW here. Here they will kick you if you try to pet them (especially around fawns), assuming you can even get close. Nowhere near as bad as moose though😂
