  • The 68 Thorne Miniature Rooms enable one to glimpse elements of European interiors from the late 13th century to the 1930s and American furnishings from the 17th century to the 1930s. Painstakingly constructed on a scale of one inch to one foot, these fascinating models were conceived by Mrs. James Ward Thorne of Chicago and constructed between 1932 and 1940 by master craftsmen according to her specifications.

    I was taken to see these as a small child and loved them. My late mother purchased 2 books about them that show each room in black and white. Seeing them again in color after 40 years was a huge treat. I just wish they gave move time to really enjoy each room instead of just a few seconds.

    If I didn't know better, I would have thought that I'm looking at pictures of life-size rooms !!! The details are amazing. The craftmanship is superb.
    Thanks for sharing.

    These are amazing, any time I have ever been to the Art Institute, and from a very young age I might add, I would spend hours staring into these rooms.

      Same!!! And I loved how they had the little steps so you could see into these rooms... Even if you were really small...

    i was in Chicago a few weeks ago to visit my grad student daughter.being from Minnesota i spent a lot of time saying "wow thats big" but went she took me to see these i did a "wow those are small" and in eye watering detail.
    more that just a doll house i think these are even better than photos or paintings of rooms depicting a long lost way of life.

    • @allexx123

      +wetcanoedogs These are so wonderful. I do miniatures for a hobby, but nothing compared to these. I am from MN too, but originally from Milwaukee WI. Have you been to the Milwaukee Public Museum ? I wish that MN would have museums like they do. The one's they call Museums in MN. are just big modern buildings full of nothing but empty space.

    • @wetcanoedogs
      @wetcanoedogs Před 8 lety

      Hi..i moved to Mn many years ago, i think all those empty white museums are because the state does things in that sleek modern Swedish style.
      or maybe they just don't have enough stuff to fill in the space!

      I agree! That room represents an English reception room between the years 1625-1655, and was modelled on two rooms inside Wilton House; the “Double Cube Room” (finished in 1653) and the “Single Cube Room” (finished around 1635-1640).
