  • 10 years ago LEGO peaked, releasing a theme that was way ahead of it's time and has cemented itself as the best LEGO theme of all time. Lord Of The Rings was a major step in LEGO appealing to adults, but didn't have the expensive adult price tags of 2022.

I’m so happy people are better appreciating my favorite theme nowadays. The quality of builds and printing of figures were way ahead of their time. You can’t even tell how good the reflective armor is on figures until you have them irl. As a kid when they were out, I played with them a ton. Hyped sm for its return, I just need those figs that they missed out on

I completely agree with you, Holly! LOTR was one of the themes that got me truly invested in LEGO. I also only watched the movies after seeing the sets. Particularly the Mines of Moria. That Troll is still one of my favorite LEGO figures. Hopefully LEGO will do another wave of minifigure scale playsets and not just incredibly expensive display models.

I've never paid more than $200 for Lego & that was buying two CREATOR CASTLE sets at once. And the next week I found another for $80! So I didn't get the New Big Kingless Castle, but I have a Big Castle!

This line also had a cool modular component to some of its sets. 7:43 In the background you can see two sets combined-- "Battle at Helm's Deep" and "Uruk-Hai Army" which were released separately but can be attached to create a more full model. LEGO did the same thing with the Dul Goldor fortress in the Hobbit line, releasing one base set and two smaller modules that can be attached. It was a great strategy or keeping sets smaller and affordable while also giving the option to make them larger if you chose.

I really hope that we don’t get many dtc sets with Lotr because I think it really doesn’t need that. One of the best bits of lego Lotr was how even the cheapest sets were still just as good as the more expensive ones.

    • @HollyOnFilm
      @HollyOnFilm  Před rokem +1

I also feel with the way the super expensive sets have been trending that it wouldn’t be good value or even maybe a good set for the price. Setting the bar too high would stop a lot of people from buying in and probably make them think it’s not as popular as it really is

Makes sense, Lord of the Rings is an AMAZING franchise. And the books are great too. The movies follow the books pretty well!

I'm guessing "D2C" means "Direct 2 Consumer"??? Does this mean that the particular D2C set is ONLY sold at LEGO online shop? Because I see almost all the sets they make going to the Lego Stores, and other places like Walmart's or Targets and the like. So what are LEGO's rules for F2C exactly then?

I 110% agree, Lego LOTR is perfect, just like the Peter Jackson Trilogy and the Books. Lego needs to learn from Lego LOTR and focus more on quality instead of quantity and refocus on affordable sets instead of insanely expensive D2C sets that very few people can afford.

  • @asorlokirunarsson9864

The Star Wars theme gets 3 different versions of Luke's speeder and LotR doesn't get one Balrog
My pitch for another wave of LotR sets:
Bridge of Kazadum - Gandalf and the Balrog on the bridge with a play feature where the bridge brakes
Battle at Pelennor Fields - the Witch-King on his Fell Beast against Merry, Eowyn and Theoden
Battle at Amon Hen - Aragorn, Frodo and Boromir in a battle against Lurtz and 3 Uruk-Hai
Ranger ambush - Faramir and 2 Gondor Rangers vs. an Oliphaunt, 2 Easterlings and 2 Haradrim
Siege of Minas Tirith - Gandalf the White and 2 Gondor soldiers, 4 orcs and an armored troll. This would include the lower level of Minas Tirith and either a siege tower or Grond, the battering ram.
The White Tree - Pippin, Denethor, Faramir, 2 royal citadel guards. This would include the upper level with the Throne Room, the White Tree of Gondor and Faramir's funeral pyre.
Preferrably, though, Minas Tirith would be a set liken unto the Death Star or the lates Diagon Alley set with figures in the tens or twenties

I love the lord of the rings sets but I feel like you’ll never be able to fully achieve those scenes. In Star Wars if there’s a shootout with stormtroopers and you have a few in a set you could easily setup the scene, and maybe even add more later on. But with lord of the rings, because there are so many huge battle scenes(tens of thousands of people) you’ll never be able to fully achieve those battles. That’s my only gripe.

I agree Lego peaked at that time. I saw you showing the Town Hall and Star Wars UCS fighter... yes and Tower of Orthanck was amazing. Got all the LOTR sets. These days Lego just tries to milk its franchise by releasing ever-more massive, badly designed sets at a faster and faster rate. I am a particular fan of the modular series and these days I just despair. Those days the modulars looked like actual buildings - the last one to do so was Corner Garage. I am slowly losing my interest in Lego. This year the best set was Technic Helicopter and one of the worst was the new red Technic mega-car which had the exact same engine as the previous one, although that new Hulk Buster must be a strong contender for badly designed pure rip-off.

There's a big demand for LOTR sets, LEGO, please, give us some sets! We love minifigs and play sets! LEGO: ok, best I can do is a couple of BrickHeadz nobody asked for and a D2C set, probably a giant ring, which is supposed to be gold but since we cannot make real looking gold, it will be crappy molded gold. The writings on the ring will be stickers of course. Ah, no minifigures as you cannot expect minifigs in these expensive sets, right? $600 please.

As a massive Tolkien fan, I can't say I was very fond of the LEGO LoTR sets AT ALL.
Bar one set: the Tower of Orthanc.
That was and is absolutely stunning to this day. It could be re-released today and not need upgrades.
The Corsairs of Umbar ship was also pretty good although not as impressive as Orthanc.
Those are the only 2 sets I bothered getting precisely because everything else wasn't really done well enough for my high standards when it comes to Tolkien's world.
I would like to have properly done, 18+, LEGO Lord of the Rings sets. The rumoured D2C better be very very well done. Specially for the rumoured 500€ price tag.
LEGO would NEVER re-release the old ones for the same price. Orthanc would likely cost close to 300€ today, and the Corsairs of Umbar ship (which LEGO dumbly named "pirate ship ambush") would be probably around 170€.
