My favorite line "the pain... It will leave you once it is done teaching you" true for so many of us
You have no idea how hard shooting this movie was.
The movie took a lot of perseverance and heart. And it shows.
Dev Patel knows Taekwondo, has a black belt. He competed regularly in both national and international championships, including the 2004 AIMAA (Action International Martial Arts Association) World Championships in Dublin, where he won a bronze medal.
I love the nod to John Wick with the gun and how he didn't take it. It's sort of like Dev Patel's way of saying "yes I was inspired by the John Wick movies, but I'm not going to do the same thing"
John - Something big, bold.
Dev - Something small, but effective.
Dev Patel and Sharlto Copley previously worked together on _Chappie_ , another movie by _District 9_ director Neill Blomkamp.
2:05 Luffy’s directly based off Hanuman
even one of his attacks is literally just another name for hanuman
So, I remember my mom telling me that in hinduism, there are four people you're always supposed to honor above god, in this order: 1. Your mother 2. Your father. 3. Your teacher 4. Your guest (in your home). To me, that makes the ending of this movie, where Dev is repeating these devotions to god and thinking about his mom, so much more profound. That scene worked so much for me bc I felt it--not just his trauma, by the end, but his love. It's an awesome choice
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie, and appreciate that hijra representation is present (sadly Alpha's actor is not hijra). The choreo is fantastic, the cinematography is beautiful and Dev Patel gives one hell of a performance. The song that plays when Alpha and her warriors are kicking ass is "Dana Dan" by Bloodywood. Strongly recommend checking it out on its own.
This movie was much better than I was expecting. You always end up wondering what you're going to get when you see a film written, directed by, and starring the same person, and the things I remember Dev Patel from are Skins, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and The Green Knight. And of course, I'm still struggling to forget The Last Airbender. Even so, this was an impressive action film, especially for a directorial debut. And it was nice to see Tae Kwon Do in use as the lead's fighting style. Not named as such in the film, but the moves were recognizable.
About Hanuman and Luffy, Hanuman and the similar Chinese counterpart Sun Wukong are basically the inspiration for every Shonen protagonist
Well that's mostly because Kid Goku was written as a Parody of Sun Wukong for the first arc before 21st Tenkachi Budokai, then DB turned into it's own Martial arts action story.
@Agent-57 yes, and sun wukong was in turn inspired by hanuman, we owe it all to him lol
Can't wait to watch this reaction! I saw it in the cinema - it was so intense. Dev Patel is fantastic in it, and what a directorial debut!
There are rumors that a Monkey Man sequel might come out. However, it will take a long time because Dev Patel went through a lot while making it. Including breaking his hand, a few toes and he had an eye infection
It's rarely to see any actor willingly to risk their life to made best action movie in Hollywood. Hope more movie like this for Hollywood now
Really hope it takes a reference from another Indian Epic - The Mahabharat ( Hanuman has a cameo)
Dev Patel also did his own stuns, and actually broke his hand in the process. The man is a real beast! I can't wait to see what he does next.
Edit: It is weird to compare this to John Wick, seeing as there's only two guns being used in Monkey Man and the revenge story is a tale as old as time.
As an Indian, I 100 percent appreciate what Dev Patel did here. Is it 100 percent accurate to India? Nope, but it is as good as Hollywood can get at depicting my country. It showed beauty and horror, and in my opinion, that represents India so well. It’s damn gorgeous and rewarding, but at the same time, it’s exhausting with a lot of douchebags. Yet, there are also people who are nice to you to a fault.
This movie gave me something I never knew I needed to see in the all out battle scene when his friends from the temple arrive as backup. 🙌 Great reaction as always.
Honestly that had to be my favorite part. He helped them heal just as much as they help them.
@@funnylilgalreacts I love that Dev just wrote and directed a movie for him to have the sort of part he's never been considered for. What a phenomenal directorial debut, and an awesome first performance as an action lead.
Sharlto Copley played villain's right hand in Elysium (2013), a flawed but heartfelt action sci-fi written+directed by District 9's Neill Blomkamp. No scenery was left unchewed :)
I agree with you, while similar to John Wick it managed to stand apart on its own
I saw this opening night in theaters with absolutely zero context and I absolutely loved it!
If you really enjoy Dev I highly recommend "Lion" starring him and Nicole Kidman. He has great acting ability and that film highlights the depth of his soul.
thanks for this reaction! i was with you for the whole ride and i cried like an ass at the end. thanks again. Dev did so much work for this! the heart in this is wild. alpha and the squad made him better. lots of love.
I wasn't expecting you to react to this movie but I'm very happy that you did. Saw this movie in the theaters and I loved it.
I missed this when initially hitting the theaters. Thankfully it was still screening at the local festival theaters after the Guadalajara film festival closed last weekend. You're one of the few Angela that did a reaction to this film, but of course wanted to see it first before reading reviews or seeing reactions. I was a mess when there was the flashback to what happened to his mother, dev patel's character getting his hand burnt trying to save his mother. Loved how it felt like el Mariachi by Robert Rodriguez in 2024 in terms of what it was doing with a look at a different country's crime underground, well crafted and sneakily edit film. Also got Christopher Nolan vibes too with music and editing. Loved the symbolism and social commentary. One of the best action films that I've seen since Nobody, that i generally am meh with as pretty weak story-wise
If you're wanting to see Sharlto Copley in more (and really displaying his acting range), then I highly recommend Hardcore Henry. It's a good time.
Seeing that teeth knife twist scene on the big screen was An Experience™
I loved this film! Dev did such a great job and I hope he gets more projects to star/direct. If you haven't already seen them, I'd recommend "Lion" and "Green Knight" for more Dev! The latter ~may be a better experience if you're familiar with the short story of the same name.
I highly recommend the music video for Dana Dan by Bloodywood (the "more appropriate" music during the hijra fight). Also their other stuff; Bloodywood is great.
You should definitely see Hit-Monkey. It's crazy underrated when it ought to be as popular as Invincible. An argument could be made that it's that good.
When the hijra in masks bust in to help him fight? Ooh girl. That's peak cinema.
Love how first time he goes in with proper planning and waiting but it ends up as a massive clusterfu**. But the second time he just waltz in there and kills his way through by sheer strength.
If you enjoy this sort of fight choreography and haven’t seen it I recommend watching The Raid and The Raid 2. Truly special films with exceptional fight choreography, and not filmed with shaky cam or heavily edited. The camera lingers in beautiful long shots watching the fight artists work their magic.
Both Raid movies are brilliant martial arts pieces, and VERY gory, which I appreciate. It's a different type of choreography and cinematography, and they absolutely kill it
i had someone argue with me that the scene around minute 38 (of this react) is first person. but this movie had a real first person shot before XD
im so glad you are reacting to thissssss!!!!! this movie is fireeee
Trailer reaction for Megalopolis? It is a scifi movie so....? Also this is the director that made "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." 😁😅
Dev Patel is an intergalactic treasure.
If you love action like this, I'd recommend taking a look at The Raid:Redemption and its sequels.
Awesome reaction! You were so fortunate to see this movie blind. You should absolutely watch the trailer for it after having seen it because it's hype perfection but it presents a movie concept this isn't. It's not Indian John Wick and so I went in thinking it would be a different movie. But the movie it actually is is fantastic. So much beautiful texture to it, well paced, and has a tension to it you don't see often. Him learning to focus his rage is pretty damn awesome and makes the night and day results for his first and second attempts great to watch evolve.
He got his vengeance now he can pass in peace
Funny that you mention it, oda was heavily influenced by hanuman when creating luffy. Especially gear 5
I agree with your comment say the John Wick comparison was unfair in fact they way they promoted the movie was very much geared towards the John Wick audience. Little fun fact the original stunt team for this film was going to be the same stunt team for the John Wick films but because of Covid he could no longer get them so instead he got someone else who has worked with Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen. And yes Sharlto Copley has been in a lot of stuff since District 9 even working with the district 9 director in two other movies because they were buddies before they hit it big with district 9. anyway sorry this comment was so long just wanted to give you this bonus information I thought you'd find interesting
Fantastic reaction to this new action movie
Sharlto Copley is also in Elysium and Europa Report.
Such a beautiful film
Yes , definitely way better and different than any of the John Wick films , but I think many people dislike it for the same reasons .
Also another great underseen film starring Dev Patel is The Green Knight.
Do you know who the guy who is playing the tabla(drums). He is one of the greatest musician in the world . Search the name Zakir Hussain.
Hey Angela. You should check out the Wolverine fan movie called "Logan the Wolf" by Godefroy Ryckewaert. It is fantastic! It is about 12 min long.
Thanks for all of the awesome reactions!
